Erma V. (Sly) McCannon, 86, of Oakville and formerly of Burlington, died at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at her son’s home.

Born August 20, 1919 in Dallas City, Illinois she was the daughter of Elmer and Irvil Hoskin Sly. On July 2, 1938 she married Jack McCannon in Kahoka, Missouri. He died March 31, 1995.

Mrs. McCannon was a homemaker and very active in the Carpenter’s Local Union for many years. She enjoyed playing cards, bowling, square dancing, and spending time at their cabin off Tama Rd. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, loved by all who knew her. She touched everyone’s heart and always wore a beautiful smile that she shared with everyone she met.

Survivors include two sons, Larry (Willa) McCannon of Oakville and Dale (Arlene) McCannon of Las Vegas, Nevada; six grandchildren, Lisa McCannon of Rock Hills South Carolina, Debbie Williams of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Tammy (Steve) Sanders of Edmond, Oklahoma, Cris Stephens of Burlington, Cassandra McCannon of San Jacinto, California, and Howard Karesh of Pasadena, California; eleven great grandchildren, Jordan Williams, Jennie Williams both of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Ben Sanders, Stephen Sanders, Katie Sanders, Emma Sanders all of Edmond, Oklahoma, Kaleb Stephens, Jesse Stephens both of Burlington and Richard Cox, Robert Cox, and Michael Gray all of San Jacinto, California; two sisters, Betty (Richard) Bessine of Burlington and Sharon Luetger of Lomax, Illinois; one brother-in-law, Walter Clarkson of San Antonio, Texas; one sister-in-law, Marie Sly of Fort Madison; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Jack McCannon; parents, Elmer and Irvil Sly; infant son, James Leon McCannon; stepson, Walter McCannon; stepdaughter, Doris Walker; three brothers, Albert Sly, Glenn Sly, and Gerald Sly; and two sisters, Audrey Sly and Marge Clarkson preceded her in death.

Shirley M. Hollingsworth Logan McCants
October 2, 1926 - January 28, 2006

-Visitation: Monday, January 30th 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM in Lunning Chapel

- Funeral Service: Tuesday, January 31, 2006 11:00 AM in Lunning Chapel

Shirley M. Hollingsworth Logan McCants, 79, of West Burlington, died at 7:19 a.m. Saturday, January 28, 2006 at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born October 2, 1926, in Roscoe, Iowa she was the daughter of Wilfred C. and Margaret Walker Hollingsworth. In 1941 she married Forrest Logan. On August 30, 1980 she married Vaughn Edward McCants in Mt. Pleasant. He died on April 29, 2005.

Mrs. McCants was a cashier for Eagles Food Store with 27 years of service, retiring in October 1989.

She attended Yarmouth schools.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was a member and past president of the VFW Auxiliary 10102, Eagles #150 Ladies Auxiliary, Women of the Moose, and Retail Clerks Union. She enjoyed going to the boat, dancing especially polka and square dancing. Mrs. McCants also liked country music and loved to ride Amtrak.

Survivors include one son, Jerry (Amy) Logan of Scottsdale, Arizona., three daughters, Linda Tickel of Burlington, Kathy (Stan) Crowl of West Des Moines, and Julie (Steve) Hearn of Carson City, Nevada; six grandchildren, Jeff Logan, Bruce Logan, Matt Logan, Kasey Tickel, Chloe Hearn, and Jared Hearn; five great-grandchildren, Rachel Logan, Jake Logan, Sidney Logan, Lakin Logan and Shelby Logan, and two brothers, Ron (Karen) Hollingsworth and Don (Joyce) Hollingsworth, both of Mediapolis.

Her husband, parents, and one brother, James Hollingsworth, preceded her in death.

Memorials have been established for Great River Hospice and First Presbyterian Church.

Helen "Sue" McCord
December 9, 1930 - September 19, 2006

Helen "Sue" McCord, 75, of Burlington, Iowa died Tuesday, September 19, 2006, at her residence.

Born December 9, 1930 in Bardwell, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Arvel and Lorene Baxter Carder. On November 20, 1951 she married Lewis McCord. They later divorced and he died in May 1991.

Ms. McCord was a graduate of Oakville (Iowa) High School. She worked as a receptionist for twelve years at the S.E. Council of Boy Scouts of America.

She was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathryn (Rodney) Dye of Wichita, Kansas and Lisa (Jack) Dutton of Burlington; one son, Scott McCord of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; ten grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and two brothers, Bill Carder of Burlington and Ed Carder of Kentucky.

A son, Tom McCord, her parents and two brothers preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established for the Arthritis Foundation.

Margaret E. McCorkel
November 20, 1919 - September 12, 2006

Margaret E. McCorkel, 86, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, September 12, 2006, at Park View Care Center in Burlington.
Born November 20, 1919 in Des Moines County, she was the daughter of Charles and Maude Rice McCorkel.

Miss McCorkel was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Sadie James of Florida and Elsie Moehle of Elma, Iowa; and nieces and nephews.

Her parents; three brothers, Charles McCorkel, Harry “Curly” McCorkel, and George McCorkel; and one sister, Gladys Engel, preceded her in death.

Arthur Earl McCullough
August 11, 1908 - December 20, 2006

-Family Visitation: Friday, January 5th, from 5:00 PM until 7::00 PM in
First United Methodist Church.
-Funeral Service: Friday, January 5th, 7:00 PM in First United Methodist Church.

Memorials have been established for Hope Haven and First United Methodist Church.

Arthur Earl McCullough, 98, of New London Nursing and Rehab Center since May of this year, formerly of Burlington, Iowa since 1965 and previously 25 year resident of Keokuk, Iowa died at 9:03 p.m. Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at the Care Center

Born August 11, 1908 in Missouri Valley, Iowa, he was the son of William Edgar and Isabelle Baker McCullough. On August 23, 1936 he married Carita Nettie Knuths in Madison, Wisconsin. She died April 14, 2006.

Mr. McCullough graduated from Missouri Valley High School and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Industrial Arts at Iowa State University where he also was a member of the ISU Wrestling Team. He taught mechanical drawing, woodshop, metal shop and auto mechanics from 1932 until 1970. He taught in Hot Springs, SD, Woodward, IA State Hospital/School, Webster City, Keokuk, was the Vocational Director at Burlington Community College from 1965 until 1970 and was Activity Director at Hope Haven Area Development Corp. from 1970 until his retirement in 1980.

He was a 25 yr member of Keokuk Trinity Methodist Church, Boy Scout Leader of Keokuk Troop 43, and Campmaster at Camp Eastman for many years, a 41 yr member of First United Methodist Church in Burlington, Retired Teachers Association, KeenAgers, Burlington Writers Club and Hawkeye Wood Carvers. He rode his bicycle in RAGBRAI at the ages of 76 and 78.

Survivors include two sons, John Arthur (Karen) McCullough of Cave Junction, Oregon and Michael Edward (Becky) McCullough of Burlington; three daughters, Carita “Cherry” Dyas of Davenport, Iowa, Barbara Joan (Alvin) Breuer of Danville, Iowa, and Mary Karen (Don) Taeger of West Burlington; fourteen grandchildren, Mike, Kevin, and Christine McCullough, Gwendolyn Schaad, Nick, Andy, Meredith and Kate Breuer, Lori Cameron-Schleifer, Diana Detl, Lisa Babcook, Greg Cameron, Heather Smith and Nate McCullough; twelve great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

His wife, parents, one grandson, one granddaughter, three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

Memorials have been established for Hope Haven and First United Methodist Church.

Carita Nettie McCullough
August 27, 1913 - April 14, 2006

According to Mrs. McCullough's wishes, her body has been cremated.

Carita Nettie McCullough, 92, of Burlington, died Friday, April 14, 2006 at New London Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born August 27, 1913 in Story City, Iowa, she was the daughter of Michael Frederick and Mary Emma Parsons Knuths. On August 23, 1936 she married Arthur E. McCullough in Madison, Wisconsin.

Mrs. McCullough was a homemaker, she liked to read and do crossword puzzles, loved flowers, watching birds, and she was a volunteer in the gift shop at Burlington Medical Center. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Burlington where she was a member of Ruth Circle and Caring Friends. She also taught first grade Sunday school at Trinity Methodist Church in Keokuk.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur E. McCullough of Burlington; two sons, John (Karen) McCullough of Cave Junction, Oregon and Mike (Becky) McCullough of Burlington; three daughters, Carita “Cherry” Dyas of Davenport, Barb (Alvin) Breuer of Danville, and Mary (Don) Taeger of West Burlington; fourteen grandchildren, Mike, Kevin, and Christine McCullough, Gwendolyn Schaad, Nick, Andy, Meredith and Kate Breuer, Lori Cameron, Diana Detl, Lisa Babcook, Greg Cameron, Heather Sanders and Nate McCullough; twelve great grandchildren; one brother, Michael Knuths of Dallas, Texas; five sisters, Anne Buck of Ames, Iowa, Winifred Butson of Wells, Minnesota, Toni Smith of Heron Point, North Carolina, Darlene Walton of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Ruthie Paddock of Pellston, Michigan.

Her parents, two grandchildren, , three brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established for First United Methodist Church.

Rilla H. McDade
January 20, 1932 - September 24, 2006

Rilla H. McDade, 74, and of Burlington, Iowa since 1956, died Sunday, September 24, 2006, at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, after a lengthy illness.

Rilla was born on January 20, 1932 in Washington County, Georgia, the daughter of Ben Hill and Juanita Lord Hammock. She was a graduate of Miller High School in Macon, Georgia. On January 16, 1954, she was united in marriage to Edward McDade in Macon.

Prior to her retirement, Rilla worked in management and administrative capacities at IRC, Philco-Ford Aero-Nutronics Division at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, in advertising at the Burlington Hawk-Eye, Answer-Iowa and BFI. Rilla was also a sponsor and chaperone for the Southeastern Iowa Community College Blackhawks. She loved music, playing bingo and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Rilla, being one of ten children, is survived by her husband, Edward McDade of Burlington, Iowa; children, Susan Wilson of Burlington, Joseph McDade and his wife Barbara of Overland Park, Kansas, Amy Allen of Burlington and Scott McDade and his wife Kimberly of Spring Hill, Kansas; seven grandchildren; brother, Bill Hammock of Macon, Georgia; her loving niece, Carolyn Adams of Austell, Georgia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her parents and eight brothers and sisters preceded her in death.

The family would like to thank the staff of Great River Medical Center and the Klein Center and Dr. Rashid for the wonderful care they have provided over the past years.
