Eileen F. Meck
February 26, 1925 - August 14, 2006

According to her wishes, the body of Mrs. Meck has been cremated.

Eileen F. Meck, 81, of Burlington died Monday, August 14, 2006 at her residence.

Born February 26, 1925 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Edward and Esther Peterson Broeg. On September 23, 1945, she married Thomas S. Meck in Burlington.

Mrs. Meck was a 1942 graduate of Burlington High School. Over the years she was employed at Burlington Instrument Company and Lamb’s Diner, with her last employment being at Champion Products Company where she was a printer. Mostly she was a homemaker and a great mom.

She was an active member of St. Luke United Church of Christ, where she was a member of the Sarah Circle and Women’s Fellowship. She also held various offices, was on the church council, sang in the church choir and took part in many activities of the Gleaners Class.

Mrs. Meck also was a member of the Burlington Women’s Bowlers Association, received the Merit Award in 1977 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988. She served as the city treasurer for four years, was a director for seven years and served on many committees. She was a member for many years of Flint Hills Ladies Golf League holding various offices, and enjoyed attending many invitationals each summer. She was also a member of the Eagles Auxiliary. She loved airplanes, took flying lessons, and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol before she married. On October 13, 2004 she took a plane ride around the city, which was a gift from her husband.

Survivors include her husband of over 60 years, Thomas S. Meck of Burlington; two daughters, Carolyn Fisher of Des Moines, and Janet Hankins of Cedar Falls; two sons, Douglas Meck of Pella and William Meck of Muscatine; eight grandchildren; two step grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one step great grandchild; a half brother, John Broeg of Victoria, Texas and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Beside her parents, one brother and two half brothers preceded her in death.

Gary James Meller
July 31, 1947 - June 13, 2006

- Graveside Celebration of Life: Wednesday, June 28th, 11:00 AM in

Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

The Rev. Patrick Hilgendorf will officiate.

The Veterans Honor Guard of VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52,

Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League and the AMVETS Post 29 will conduct

Military Rites.
According to his wishes, the body of Mr. Meller has been cremated.

Gary James Meller, 58, of Burlington and raised in Denmark, died Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at his residence.

Born July 31, 1947 in Burlington, he was the son of Mark and Dorothy Wolkenhuaer Meller. He was previously married to Mary Paradise.

Mr. Meller was a 1965 graduate of Fort Madison High School. He was a Navy veteran of Vietnam serving two years off the coast of Vietnam. He worked in the office at J.I. Case Company for 21 years.

Mr. Meller was a member of SS John and Paul Catholic Church and enjoyed golfing. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren.

Survivors include one daughter, Theresa (Kim) Bryan of Rochester, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Ian Bryan and Marissa Bryan; one brother, Keith Meller of Fort Madison; and four sisters, Donna Heminger and Marilyn Wirt both of Winter Haven, Florida, and Jeanine (Terry) Boline and Jerilyn Johnson both of Burlington.

His parents and one sister Mary preceded him in death.

Jo Ann Mellinger

April 15, 1935 ~ November 12, 2005

Jo Ann Mellinger, 70, of Burlington died at 7:49 p.m. Saturday, November 12, 2005, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born April 15, 1935 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Robert and Opal Viva Noel McQueen. On May 29, 1955 she married Richard “Dick” Mellinger in Burlington.

Mrs. Mellinger worked for Sylvania and Winegard early in her marriage.

She was a 1954 graduate of Burlington High School. She was of the Christian faith. She was first chair violinist in high school and enjoyed antiques, crafts, crochet, music and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband, Richard “Dick” Mellinger of Burlington; one daughter, Becky (Jim) Koehler of Burlington; three sons, Rick (Laura) Mellinger of Burlington, Steve (Lenora) Mellinger of Brunswick, Georgia and Robin Mellinger of Burlington; 12 grandchildren, Josh, Kris, Nick and Amanda Koehler, Joel, Emily and Olivia Mellinger, Kristen and Katie Mellinger, Mariah, Leeza Mellinger and Ryan Lozano; one sister, Janice (Paul) Leinbach of Columbus Junction; one brother, Jim (Linda) McQueen of Old Saybrook, Connecticut; and many nieces and nephews.

Her parents preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established for the Children’s Department of Burlington Public Library.

Hattie Michaels
May 23, 1907 - November 2, 2005

Hattie F. Michaels, 98, of Burlington, died at 5:20 a.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2005, at Great River Medical Center’s Klein Center in Burlington.

Born May 23, 1907, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Frank and Mary Barkus Bloomer. On April 29,1924, she married Ormal Wilber Michaels in Burlington. He died in 1967.

Mrs. Michaels worked for Clinton and Copeland Candy Factory in Burlington for about 20 years. She later worked for Midwest Biscuit Co. and the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant.

She was of the Protestant faith. She enjoyed handcrafts such as latch hooking and beadwork.

Survivors include two sons, Donald Edward (Toni) Michaels of Marina, California and Richard (Camille) Michaels of West Burlington; and one grandson, Kevin Michaels.

Her husband; one son, Charles Michaels; one grandson, Michael Ray Michaels, six sisters; and one brother preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

Debbie Lynne Miller
August 1, 1953 - October 12, 2006

Deborah “Debbie” Lynne Miller, 53, of West Burlington, Iowa, died at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, October 12, 2006, at her residence.

Born August 1, 1953 in Burlington she was the daughter of Gene and Marian Behne Massey. On April 22, 1972 she married Terry Ryner in Burlington. She later married Richard Miller on March 11, 1983 at First United Church of Christ in Burlington.

Mrs. Miller was a 1971 graduate of Burlington High School. She was a homemaker and a housekeeper. She was a member of First United Church of Christ and enjoyed gardening, watching birds and wildlife, camping, the River, reading and music.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Miller of West Burlington; three daughters, Jamie (Shawn) Adam of Burlington, Mandy (John) Steele of Columbus, Ohio, and Megan Miller of Long Beach, California; six grandchildren, Cody, Hunter, Emily, Parker, Dallas and Jaclyn; her father, Gene Massey of Burlington; and two sisters, Pam (Joe) Vorwerk of Mesquite, Texas and Stacey (Randy) Wachter of Burlington.

Her mother and grandparents preceded her in death.

Glenn John Miller, 93, most recently of Fort Madison Health Care Center and previously a life long resident of Dodgeville, Iowa, moving to Danville, Iowa in 1983 died Wednesday, January 31, 2007, at Fort Madison Community Hospital.

Born September 1, 1913 in Des Moines County, Iowa, he was the son of Frederick and Hannah G. Hueschen Miller.

Mr. Miller attended Zion School near Dodgeville. He was an Army Veteran of World War II serving from 1942 – 1945 in Company A 120th Mt. Engr. as a T5.

He was a farmer, with his farm being four miles southwest of Dodgeville. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church of Burlington. He enjoyed playing the guitar, singing, and was a good pitcher and ball player in his younger years.

Survivors include one brother, Carl E. (Pauline) Miller of West Burlington; two nieces and six nephews.

His parents and one brother, Everett Miller, preceded him in death.

Lela May Miller
April 12, 1918 - May 9, 2007

Devoted wife and mother, Lela May Miller, 89, of Burlington, Iowa died at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at Donnellson Health Center in Donnellson, Iowa.

Born April 12, 1918 in Terre Haute, Illinois, she was the daughter of Charles E. and Loda May Rigby Sliger. She married George Schmeiser in 1939. He died in August of 1948. On April 3, 1954 she married Fred K. Miller in Kahoka, Missouri.

Mrs. Miller attended a county school in Gulfport, Illinois. She moved to Burlington in 1936. She worked at Iowa Ordnance Plant for 31 years retiring in 1982.

Mrs. Miller was a member of First United Methodist Church, Eagles Auxiliary and Union 1010 at the Ordnance Plant. She and Fred were active bowlers and they enjoyed boating on the Mississippi River.

Survivors include her husband, Fred K. Miller of Burlington; one daughter, Susan Kay Kenney of Burlington; one son, Stephen Schmeiser of Asheville, North Carolina; three grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Her son, Charles Lee Schmeiser; parents; two sisters, Reva Mason and Irene Powell; and four brothers, James Sliger, Lee Sliger, Roma Sliger and Lynn Sliger preceded her in death.
