Mary Lou Roling

GRAF, Iowa - Mary Lou (Hall) Roling, 53, of Graf, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at home, after a brief illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Clement's Catholic Church, Bankston, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in the Holy Cross (Iowa) Cemetery . Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m.

Mrs. Roling worked at Flexsteel Industries Inc. for 22 years and was a homemaker.

She was born on Sept. 15, 1949, in Dubuque, daughter of Robert J. and Theda M. (Berger) Hall. She married Leo Roling on Oct. 23, 1993, at St. John's Catholic Church, Peosta.

Mary enjoyed fishing, quilting, playing cards and bingo, traveling and spending time with her nieces and nephews.

Surviving are her husband, Leo; her mother, Theda Hall, of Durango; two sisters, Barbara (Daniel "Buck") Callahan, of Dubuque, and Marlene (David) Smithson, of Durango; a brother, Pat (Dorothy) Hall, of Durango; two sisters-in-law, Sharon Roling, of Holy Cross, and Marita (Mike) Bries, of New Vienna; three brothers-in-law, Ed (Joyce) Roling, of Tulsa, Okla., and Ralph Roling and Jerry (Barb) Roling, both of Dubuque; nieces and nephews, Tina Callahan (Chris Lange), Stacy Kalb (Jon Cole), and Mary Lou and Steve Koehler, all of Dubuque, Jean Callahan, of North Liberty, Jack and Jamie Kalb, of Peosta, Jacob Kalb, of Marion, Don Kalb (Amanda Faber), of Worthington, Jason and Nicole Hall, of Hills, and Bob and Beth Hall, of Iowa City; great-nieces and nephews, Courtney Kalb, of San Antonio, Texas, Madison Kalb, of Peosta, Tristin Cole, of Dubuque, Andy Kalb, of Worthington, Shelby Koehler, of Dubuque, and Ethan Hall, of Hills.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Hall, on March 15, 1975; her father-in-law, Emil Roling, on April 10, 1950; her mother-in-law, Agatha Roling, on Nov. 29, 1998; and two brothers-in-law, Donald "Jack" Kalb Jr., on Feb. 4, 1993, and Jerome Roling, on Oct. 3, 1997.

Robert E. Miehe

Robert E. Miehe, 76, of 135 State St., died at 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church. Entombment will be in the Resurrection Garden Mausoleum at Mount Calvary Cemetery , where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 4:30 p.m., and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will meet at 7 p.m.

Mr. Miehe was a certified mechanic employed for more than 25 years at Clemen's Motor Sales, and retiring from Riley's.

He was born on Nov. 18, 1926, in Dubuque, son of Robert "Bert" and Julia (May) Miehe. He married Rita M. Mahan on Oct. 4, 1967, in Freeport, Ill.

He served with the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of St. Columbkille's Parish and a member and past commander of the VFW Post 9663. He was a past district commander and the National Aide-de-Camp for 2 years. He was also a member of the VFW Post 508.

He was a member of the Tri-State Veterans Memorial Association and served as secretary for 12 years and as secretary/treasurer for 5 years.

To relax, Bob enjoyed fishing. He was a very loyal and loving stepfather to his five step-children and grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Rita M. Miehe; three daughters, Jayne A. (Michael) Hartford, of Dubuque, Charlene M. (John) Gomez, of Baldwin, Iowa, and Malia M. West (special friend, Jim), of Dubuque; two sons, Gerald L. (Jan) Steiner, of Las Vegas, and Randel J. Holgate (special friend, Doris), of LaPlace, La.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn (Donald) Paeper, of Lansing, Iowa, and Eileen (Henry) Opsahl, of Mesa, Ariz.; a brother, Charles (Carol) Miehe, of Belmont, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Thelma Miehe, of Dubuque; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Wilfred Miehe; a son-in-law, David West; and a grandson, Gary Hartford.

The family wishes to thank all the doctors at Medical Associates, especially Dr. Kirk Payne, and also the nurses and staff of Hospice of Dubuque for their care and concern for Bob.

Neill McCaffrey, 88, of Seventh Heaven, 1321 Tomahawk Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at Seventh Heaven.

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - Velma M. Kramer, 99, of Platteville, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Gray's Nursing Home, Platteville.

Dorothy M. Schmidt

GUTTENBERG, Iowa - Dorothy M. (Nelson) Schmidt, 86, of Guttenberg, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.

Arrangements are pending at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Guttenberg.

Sister Gertrude Bruneau, OSF

Sister Gertrude Bruneau, OSF, 90, of Holy Family Hall, died at 6:04 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at the Holy Family Hall Infirmary.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount St. Francis Chapel, 3390 Windsor Ave. Friends may call from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mount St. Francis. Arrangements are pending at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road.

Beatrice A. Lewis

HARPERS FERRY, Iowa - Beatrice A. "Bea" Lewis, 56, of Harpers Ferry, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at home, following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann's-St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Harpers Ferry. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery , Paint Rock, rural Harpers Ferry. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church hall.

The Martin Funeral Home, Waukon, is in charge of arrangements.

Helen M. McCulloch

Helen M. McCulloch, 83, of ManorCare Health Services, Dubuque, formerly of Plano, Ill., died at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at ManorCare.

Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Au-Sable Grove Cemetery , Yorkville, Ill. There will be no public visitation. The Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, Ill., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McCulloch was formerly a job service representative for the state of Illinois, and prior to that worked in retail sales for a number of years.

She was born on Oct. 2, 1919, in Waterman, Ill., daughter of Forrest and Elsie (Finger) Clawson. She married James Edward McCulloch in August 1941, in Yorkville; he died on Jan. 2, 1971.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary (Ken) Radivoy, of Aiken, S.C., and Sue (Herb) Bussan, of East Dubuque; a brother, Howard (Lillian) Clawson, of Largo, Fla.; and nieces and nephews.

A Helen M. McCulloch Memorial Fund has been established.

Helen M. McCulloch, 83, of ManorCare Health Services, Dubuque, formerly of Plano, Ill., died at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at ManorCare.

Deborah R. Cashman

BERNARD, Iowa - Mrs. Gregory (Deborah R.) Cashman, 33, of 988 Leisure Lake, Bernard, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 24, 2002, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident west of Otter Creek.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, Dubuque, where arrangements are pending.

Clara R. Hamilton

Mrs. James (Clara R.) Hamilton, 93, of 523 Rhomberg Ave., died at 6:45 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Chapel services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where friends may call after 10:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Center Grove Cemetery.

She was born on Sept. 11, 1909, in Bankston, Iowa, daughter of John and Anna (Heri) Leuenberger.

She married James Hamilton on Jan. 31, 1931, in Latnerville, Iowa. She and Jim lived in Savanna, Ill., for many years before moving back to Dubuque.

Clara enjoyed sewing, reading and growing flowers and she especially enjoyed visiting with anyone.

Surviving are nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James, on April 8, 1995; three sisters; and a brother.

Memorials may be given to Project Concern, 3505 Stoneman Road, Dubuque, Iowa 52002.

Anita L. Udelhofen

DICKEYVILLE, Wis. - Anita L. Udelhofen, 90, of Dickeyville, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dickeyville, with the Rev. Francis Steffen officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Martin Page Funeral Home, Potosi, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4:15 p.m.

She was born on March 21, 1912, in Georgetown, daughter of Robert and Edna (Fager) McReynolds. She married Bernard Udelhofen on Oct. 15, 1929, at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Tennyson; he died on Dec. 5, 1985.

She was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Anita enjoyed playing cards and liked to crochet. She dearly loved her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are seven children, Kathleen (Ray) Herbsleb, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Robert (Florence) Udelhofen, of Platteville, Jerry (Mary Lou) Udelhofen, Jacob (Joanne) Udelhofen and Donald (Doris) Udelhofen, all of Potosi, Phyllis Genthe, of Cuba City, and Ronald (Helen) Udelhofen, of Dickeyville; 26 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Ruth Bierman, of Potosi; a brother-in-law, Virgil Runde, of Cuba City; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law, Harold Genthe; three grandsons, Kyle Udelhofen, Ryan Udelhofen and Dennis Wallig; two sisters, Hilda Kauffman and Helen Runde; and a brother, Robert McReynolds.

Richard E. Fahey

Richard E. "Dick" Fahey, 73, of 1925 St. Anne Court, died at 10:48 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery , where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be the St. Anthony's Parish Christian wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Fahey, an accountant, was treasurer and comptroller at Tri-State Paving Co. In 1981, he founded and was the owner and operator of Dick Fahey Tax and Accounting Service.

He was born on July 10, 1929, in Dubuque, the youngest of 10 children born to John and Mary (Bauer) Fahey. He and Kathleen Wandling were married on Feb. 12, 1955, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Marengo, Iowa.

He was a graduate of the former Loras Academy in 1947, attended the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and was a graduate of Loras College, Dubuque.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the Navy from 1951-1953.

He was a member of St. Anthony's Parish, where he served as usher for many years; Knights of Columbus Dubuque Council 510; Loras Club of Dubuque; Loras Alumni Association; American Legion, Dubuque Post 6; Life Member of Dubuque Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9663; secretary-treasurer of the Dubuque Fellowship Club; and was a past member of the Board of Directors of the Iowa Asphalt Paving Association.

Surviving are his wife, Kathleen "Katie" Fahey; four daughters, Margaret "Peg" Fahey-Graf, and grandchildren, Jerdell and Shatiquia, of Lombard, Ill., Patricia (Lt. Col. Scott) Koster, and granddaughter, Mariah, of Springfield, Va., Anne (Richard) Heim, and grandchildren, Christine, Emily, Michael and Meredith, of Lombard, Sharon (Patrick Moore) Fahey, and grandchildren, Jessica Fahey-Brown and Sean and Caitlin Moore, of Coralville, Iowa; two sisters, Mary Danzer and Lorraine Didesch, of Dubuque; two brothers, Charles (Marion) Fahey, of Dubuque, and William (Mary Ellen) Fahey, of Cottage Grove, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Rodney Graf; two sisters, Eileen Schueller and Florence George; and three brothers, Bernard, John and Robert.

In lieu of flowers, a Richard E. Fahey Memorial Fund has been established.

The family wishes to extend a special thank-you to the doctors and staff at Dubuque Internal Medicine, The Finley Hospital and Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque and Dr. Lally and the Wendt Regional Cancer Center staff.

GARNAVILLO, Iowa - Betty I. Berns, 81, of Garnavillo, formerly of St. Paul, Minn., died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at the Guttenberg (Iowa) Care Center.
