Madonna M. Feldman

Mrs. Madonna M. "Donna" Feldman, 70, of 2679 Jackson St., died at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at The Finley Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery , Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 4:30 p.m.

Mrs. Feldman formerly worked at St. Dominic Villa and Loras College.

She was born on July 12, 1932, in Dubuque, daughter of Linus and Mary (Splinter) Conlon. She married Elmer J. Feldman on Oct. 15, 1952, in San Francisco; he died on May 29, 1994.

She was very artistic and enjoyed painting and drawing when her health permitted. She was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother and especially loved being with her grandchildren.

Surviving are four daughters, Linda K. (David) VanDusseldorp, of New Windsor, Ill., and Karen S. Feldman, Joan M. (Clarence) Handke and Nikki J. (Ron) Paar, all of Dubuque; five sons, Christopher J. (Christine) Feldman, Robert G. Feldman, Thomas M. (Kathy) Feldman and Philip J. (Deborah) Feldman, all of Dubuque, and Paul A. (Becca) Feldman, of Wyoming, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; and three sisters, Kay (Robert) Hoffman, of Houston, Dorothy (Tom) Dempsey, of San Francisco, and Beverly (Herbert) Weindinger, of Chicago.

She also was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Matt (Eileen) Rohner; and a brother, Donald L. (Anna Mae) Conlon.

A Madonna M. Feldman Memorial Fund has been established.

The family wishes to thank Laura and Lisa from the Visiting Nurses Association and Patty and Katie from Finley Home Care for their loving care and concern for Donna.

Helen M. Ingles

EDGEWOOD, Iowa - Helen M. Ingles, 84, of Guttenberg, formerly of the Edgewood/Colesburg area, died Saturday night, Nov. 2, 2002, at the Guttenberg Care Center, following a long illness.

There will be no services. Her body was donated to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, for medical research.

The Leonard Funeral Home, Edgewood, is in charge of arrangements.

Jerald D. Moser

EARLVILLE, Iowa - Jerald D. Moser, 69, of Earlville, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Regional Medical Center, Manchester.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Earlville United Parish, where friends may call after 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at a later date.

The Clifton Funeral Home, Earlville, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary A. Tranel

CUBA CITY, Wis. - Mary Agnes Tranel, 75, of 1980 County Z, Cuba City, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Sinsinawa, with her grandson, the Rev. Bart Timmerman, presiding at the concelebrated Mass, along with the Rev. David Timmerman and brother priests of the Diocese of Madison. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Casey Funeral Home, Cuba City, where there will be the parish rosary and a prayer service at 2 p.m.

She was born on Dec. 16, 1926, in Dickeyville, daughter of Frank and Louise (Kunkel) Lange.

She married Oswin Tranel on Jan. 14, 1948, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dickeyville. Mary Agnes was a homemaker and farmed with her husband in the Louisburg area.

Mary Agnes was devoted to God and her family. She was a member of St. Joseph Parish, Sinsinawa, the Council of Catholic Women and the St. Joseph Parish choir. She prayed the rosary daily and often was a rosary leader at church. She served on the St. Joseph School Board for 12 years and was a 4-H leader for many years.

Mary Agnes loved all of her children and grandchildren, and they were always welcome at her home. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, crocheting, gardening, baking and playing cards. She made a quilt for each of her grandchildren.

Mary Agnes always will be remembered for her willingness to help others, for her ready smile and for her positive attitude. She was a loving, hard-working wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Her kindness touched many hearts and lives and she will be missed by all.

Surviving are her husband, Oswin; 11 children, Roseann (David) Wiederholt, Karen (Dan) Timmerman and Mary Lou (Richard) Dalsing, all of Kieler, Rita (Donald) Fluhr, of East Dubuque, Ill., Judy (Owen) Adrian, of Cassville, and John (Connie) Tranel, Thomas (Lin) Tranel, Steve (Joan) Tranel, Dan (Jennifer) Tranel, Larry (Tina) Tranel and Joann (Tony) Jansen, all of Cuba City; 50 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two brothers, John (Evelyn) Lange, of Platteville, and Edmund (Mary) Lange, of Dickeyville; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Louise Lange.

A Mary Agnes Tranel Memorial Fund has been established.

The family of Mary Agnes Tranel would like to give special thanks to the Hospice nurses for their wonderful care and to all those who visited her, especially the priests who came to pray with her.

Vera J. Federspiel

BERNARD, Iowa - Vera J. (McDermott) Federspiel, 88, of 3523 Bernard Road, Bernard, died at 7:34 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen, rural Bernard, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Leonard Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 2595 Rockdale Road, Dubuque, where there will be a parish rosary at 7 p.m.

She was born on Dec. 26, 1913, in Epworth, daughter of James and Anna (Callahan) McDermott.

She married George J. Federspiel on May 14, 1941, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Epworth. Together with their family, they farmed in the Bernard area.

She touched so many of our lives through her smile, her faith and her love. She was a devoted wife, mom and grandma, and will be sadly missed.

Surviving are her husband, George; two sons, Loras (Rita) and Tom (Diane), both of Bernard; a daughter, Patti (Rich) Meehan, of Iowa City; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Bertha McDermott, Rose Horsfield and Mary Driscoll.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Harold and Clarence; and a sister, Mary Speltz.

A Vera Federspiel Memorial Fund has been established.

Melvin M. Link

KEY WEST, Iowa - Melvin M. Link, 80, of 9623 Monticello Drive, Key West, died at 1:40 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Key West. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery , Dubuque. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., Dubuque, where there will be the parish wake service at 4:30 p.m.

Mr. Link farmed in the Waupeton area before moving to Dubuque. He was then employed at the former Farley and Loetscher Mfg. Co. for 12 years. He was lastly employed as a heavy-equipment operator at John Deere Dubuque Works for 23 years, until his retirement in 1983.

He was born on Sept. 30, 1922, in Waupeton, son of Raymond and Veronica (Steger) Link. He married Bernilda E. Meyer on Sept. 26, 1944, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dubuque; she died on July 8, 1993.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Parish, Key West, and a member of the United Automobile Workers Local 94 Retirees. He also belonged to the UAW Senior Citizens and the United Commercial Travelers for many years.

He enjoyed bowling, playing cards and traveling. He also helped his wife making crafts. He liked cutting grass on his John Deere lawn mower.

Surviving are a daughter, Beverly A. (Thomas) Ford, of Dubuque; three grandchildren, Hope E. (Keith) Brandel, of East Dubuque, Ill., Michael A. (Kym) Ford, of Santee, Calif., and Katie M. Ford, of Iowa City; three great-grandchildren, Jennings and Emily Brandel and Beau Ford; a brother, Donald Link, of Dubuque; and a niece and two nephews.

He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon D. Wagner, in 1996; two grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Irene Link.

Memorials may be given to St. Joseph's Parish, 10234 Key West Drive, Dubuque, Iowa 52003.

Ellen M. Nicks

Ellen M. Nicks, 76, of Luther Manor Nursing Home, 3131 Hillcrest Road, formerly of St. Mary's Apartments, 2955 Kaufmann Ave., and Adair St., died at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at the nursing home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where arrangements are pending.

Dula M. Budde

PRESTON, Iowa - Dula M. Budde, 78, of Preston, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Preston, where friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Arrangements are pending at Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston.

Herbert J. McAndrews

Herbert Joseph "Bert" McAndrews, 76, of 2270 Woodworth St., died at 3:01 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at The Finley Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery , Key West, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., where there will be a wake service at 4:30 p.m.

Mr. McAndrews worked at A.Y. McDonald Mfg. Co. and retired from the Dubuque Community School District. After his retirement he was an usher at the Five Flags Center and also worked for the Dubuque Schools Athletic Department.

He was born on Sept. 11, 1926, in Dubuque, son of Thomas and Lucille (Duggan) McAndrews. He married Adeline Herrig on June 9, 1948, at St. Donatus (Iowa) Catholic Church.

He was a World War II Navy veteran and graduated from the former Loras Academy. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque, where he was a past commander. He was a troop leader of Boy Scout Troop 69. He also was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, where he was a lector, Eucharist minister and choir member. Bert enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Surviving are his wife, Adeline (Herrig) McAndrews, of Dubuque; two daughters, Judy McAndrews, of Dubuque, and Karen (Shawn) Courtney, of Colleyville, Texas; three sons, Michael McAndrews, Pat (Cathy) McAndrew and Tim (Cindy) McAndrew, all of Dubuque; 11 grandchildren, Tracy (John) Noel, Tiffany McAndrew, Nikki Leibfried, Ryan, Matthew and Adam Courtney, and Jessica, Maria, Anthony, Mitchell and Thomas McAndrew; two great-grandsons, Brandon and Justin Noel; a brother, the Rev. Thomas McAndrew, of Dubuque; a sister, Kathleen "Kay" (Dick) Burdick, of Dubuque; two brothers-in-law, Lee (Mary) Herrig and Eldon (Marge) Herrig, both of Dubuque; and a sister-in-law, Dolores Herrig, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Cecilia Vigil; and a brother-in-law, Harold Herrig.

The family wishes to thank The Finley Hospital Emergency Medical Team and the Dubuque Fire and Rescue Squads.

Mary M. Ahlers

FARLEY, Iowa - Mary M. (Merfeld) Ahlers, 64, of John's Creek, rural Farley, died at 5:12 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at home, after a long battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cascade, with the Rev. Daniel Krapfl officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery , Cascade. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, where there will be a wake service at 4:30 p.m.

Mrs. Ahlers worked mostly in the industrial profession, being employed at Collins, Noble Corp., and finally at Ertl's, until the time of her early retirement.

She was born on Jan. 11, 1938, in Cascade, daughter of Joe Sr. and Mary (Koob) Merfeld. Mary lived all of her childhood in Cascade.

She was united in marriage to Lawrence "Larry" Ahlers on July 29, 1958, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cascade. Shortly after her marriage to Larry, they moved to his family farm in John's Creek, rural Farley, where she was living at the time of her death.

Mary loved to camp, fish and spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Mary's passion was genealogy. She got a lot of pleasure tracing back her family and seeing where the family would end.

Surviving are her husband, Lawrence Ahlers, of John's Creek, rural Farley; their children, Kevin (Lisa) Ahlers, of Cascade, Norbert (Charlotte) Ahlers, of Earlville, and Jerome (and fiancee, Nikki Welter) Ahlers, of Dubuque: and all her loving grandchildren, Kevin's children, Michael, Melanie and Joey, Kevin's step children, Christopher, Joshua, Lillian and Greggory and Norbert's children, Brandon, Mikayla, Matthew, Jacob and Gage; her mother, Mary Merfeld, of Cascade; six brothers, Joe Jr. (Dodi) Merfeld, of Cascade, Carl Merfeld, of Monticello, Louis (Gladys) Merfeld, of Dubuque, Frances (Gerri) Merfeld, of Benton Harbor, Mich., Robert (Cheryl) Merfeld, of Garden Prairie, Ill., and Allan (Beverly) Merfeld, of Rockford, Ill.; three sisters, Rose Marie Oswald, of Monticello, Annabelle (Gerald) Gudenkauf, of Delhi, and Theresa Drew, of Cascade; a sister-in-law, Mercile (Laverne) Pins, of Farley; a brother-in-law, Carey (Darlene) Ahlers, of Worthington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Merfeld Sr.; her father and mother-in-law, Lawrence and Edna Ahlers; her sisters-in-law, Peg Merfeld, Judy Merfeld and Janice Geers; her brothers-in-law, Earl Oswald and Ralph Drew; a godson (nephew), John Gudenkauf; and other nieces and nephews.

A Mary M. Ahlers Memorial Fund has been established.
