Marilyn Diachun

Marilyn (Jones) Diachun, 73, formerly of Dubuque, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, in Sedona, Ariz.
Memorial services will be held in Dubuque at a later date.

She was born on Sept. 15, 1927, in Dubuque, daughter of Walter C. and Ida L. (Wirzbach) Jones.

She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1945. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Dubuque in 1949, and her master's degree from the University of Wichita in 1952. She did advanced doctoral studies at Columbia University.

She played the oboe and English horn in the orchestra of the Ballet Rousse before her marriage to Ivan Diachun. After his death in 1965, she taught instrumental music in New Jersey schools.

Surviving are a sister-in-law, Ruth Jones, of Dubuque; four nephews, Ric (Sue) Jones, of Dubuque, Tom (Anne) Jones, of Louisville, Colo., Rob Jones, of Hartland, Wis., and Bill Jones, of Denver, Colo.; great-nephews and nieces; and special cousins, Josh Cousin, Lindi (Leonard) Cousin Padgett and Heidi Cousin, all of Sedona.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Truman, Freeman and LaMar Jones.

Leone M. Kartman

CASSVILLE, Wis. - Leone M. Kartman, 85, of Cassville, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at the Lancaster Care Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Catholic Church, Cassville, with the Rev. John Norder officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Metcalfe-Kuenster-Page Funeral Home, Cassville, where there will be a scripture service at 4:15 p.m.

She was born on July 22, 1915, in Cassville, daughter of Nick and Ella Jane (Turner) Ackerman. She married Francis Kartman on June 25, 1941, at St. Charles Catholic Church, Cassville.

She attended the former Platteville Teachers College for a year and then taught in rural schools in Grant County for five years.

She enjoyed traveling and took many trips to various places. She also loved to fish, play cards and dance. She was a member of the National Council of Catholic Women at St. Charles Parish.

Surviving are her husband, Francis, of Cassville; four children, Judith (Carroll) Hermanson, of Benton, Kenneth (Janis) Kartman, of Hazel Green, Mark (Jacqui) Kartman, of Coon Valley, and Kurt (Laurie) Kartman, of Stoddard; and 12 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Nancy Adrian; a grandson, David Hermanson; and a brother, LeRoy Ackerman.

Luciel L. Kuehl

GARNAVILLO, Iowa - Luciel Louise Kuehl, 86, of Garnavillo, died after a lengthy illness Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Garnavillo, with the Rev. Richard Gaul officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo, where there will be a scripture service at 4:30 p.m.

Mrs. Kuehl was a homemaker and also worked at the Garnavillo Post Office for many years.

She was born on March 1, 1914, near Garnavillo, daughter of W. Leo and Amelda (Keehner) Schulte. She married Norbert Kuehl on May 8, 1939, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Monticello; he preceded her in death.

Surviving are three daughters, LuAnn (Richard) Jutting, of Richfield, Minn., Leslee (David) Helle, of Dyersville, and Linda (Glenn) Berns, of Garnavillo; a son, Lanny (Linda) Kuehl, of Garnavillo; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Geraldine Quinn, Mary Dickinson and Maxine Kuennen; and a brother, Woodrow Schulte.

Marjorie E. O'Shea

Marjorie E. O'Shea, 96, of the Heartland Care Facility, Platteville, Wis., formerly of Dubuque, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at the facility.
Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., with burial in St. Joseph's Prairie Cemetery , south of Dubuque. Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

She was born on Sept. 14, 1904, in Dubuque, daughter of Michael and Anna (Tierney) O'Shea.

She spent the majority of her professional life in Chicago working as a caregiver. She received her licensed practical nursing certificate in 1961. She retired in 1970 and returned to Dubuque.

She enjoyed board games, euchre and lively discussions about politics. She loved animals, especially cats, and had an interest in astrology. Marjorie resided at the Heartland Care Facility in Platteville for the past eight years and was very proud of her ancestry.

Surviving are a sister-in-law, Marie O'Shea, of Ridgeway, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers and a sister.

A Marjorie E. O'Shea Memorial Fund has been established.

We wish to thank the nurses and staff at the Heartland Care Facility for all their acts of kindness and excellent care given to Marjorie over the last eight years.

Leonard E. Paisley

Mr. Leonard E. Paisley, 85, of the Dubuque Nursing and Rehab Center, formerly of 2707 N. Grandview Ave., and Rickardsville, Iowa, died at 9:14 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at the center.
Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, with burial in Linwood Cemetery . Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a Holy Ghost Catholic Church Parish Christian wake service at 2:30 p.m.

Mr. Paisley farmed his entire life in the Rickardsville area, prior to retiring.

He was born on July 30, 1915, in Rickardsville, son of John and Agnes (Nelson) Paisley. He married Cecelia G. Schadler on Feb. 21, 1939, at the former St. Philomena Catholic Church, now Resurrection Catholic Church; she died on Oct. 24, 1983.

He was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church and was an avid card-playing enthusiast.

Surviving are three daughters, Marjorie (Richard) Ries and Marlene (Bob) Habel, both of Dubuque, and Doris (Joe) Schmitt, of Rickardsville; 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; a sister, Irene (Gerald) Nichols, of Clinton, Iowa; and three sisters-in-law, Bernice "Bea" Paisley, of Dubuque, Mary Paisley, of Independence, Iowa, and Marjorie Paisley, of Bozeman, Mont.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Chester, Arnold, Glen, George and Howard; and two sisters, Ruth Miller and Marie McLean.

Memorials may be given to Holy Ghost Catholic Church and Hospice of Dubuque.

Ralph L. Rife

ELIZABETH, Ill. - Ralph L. Rife, 94, of Elizabeth, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at the Elizabeth Nursing Home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Church of St. Mary Catholic Church, Elizabeth, with the Rev. David Huber officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth, where there will be a rosary at 8 p.m.

Mr. Rife worked for the Jo Daviess Service Co., was a mechanic for the Elizabeth Garage and owned and operated the Standard Oil Station in Elizabeth. He also drove a school bus for the Elizabeth schools for many years.

He was born on Monday, March 26, 1906, in Rush Creek Township, near Stockton, son of Roy and Bessie (Flack) Rife. He married Dorothy C. Ertmer on Oct. 11, 1934, in Freeport; she died on Aug. 24, 1966, in Elizabeth.

He graduated from Stockton High School in 1924. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was an avid golfer and a member of Storybrook Country Club. He was an honorary member of the snowmobile club and also enjoyed gardening and fishing. Most important to Ralph was his family.

Surviving are four daughters, Carol Tippett, of Elizabeth, Connie (Eugene) Ertmer, of Omro, Wis., Mary "Marg" (Tom) Gulovich, of Grafton, Wis., and Julie (Randy) Jobgen, of Galena; three sons, Thomas (Nancy) Rife, of Elizabeth, Don (Mary) Rife, of Pataskala, Ohio, and Jack (Cheryl) Rife, of Stockton; 26 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Doris Tyson, of Apple River.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren, Mary Cecelia Gulovich and Thomas Lee Gulovich; a great-grandchild, Adriene Tippett; a brother, Lyle Rife; and a sister, Stella Wilcox.

William J. Sheehy Sr.

William J. "Bill" Sheehy Sr., 80, of Victorville, Calif., formerly of Dubuque, and Austin, Minn., died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, while on vacation with his family.
Services were held Friday in Victorville. The body was cremated.

Matthew Steven Vincent

GALENA, Ill. - Matthew Steven Vincent, infant son of Stephanie Vincent, of Galena, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.
Services and burial were in Greenwood Cemetery , Galena. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, was in charge of arrangements.

Matthew will be sadly missed by Stephanie, Mike, Patti and Steve.

Leroy J. Marcus
OTTER CREEK, Iowa - Leroy J. Marcus, 89, of Otter Creek, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque following a brief illness.

Richard L. Bauer

Richard L. Bauer, 48, of Rochester, Minn., formerly of Dubuque, died at 2:40 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in Rochester.

Memorial services will be at 4:50 p.m. Wednesday at Sisters of the Presentation Mother House, 2360 Carter Road, Dubuque. Burial of the cremated remains will be Thursday in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

He was born on Feb. 13, 1954, in Dubuque, son of LaVerne and Mary C. (Melloy) Bauer.

He enjoyed time spent with family and friends. He also enjoyed making soups and homemade meals for his mother, which she enjoyed very much. He enjoyed fishing, was an avid race fan and loved his dogs.

Surviving are a daughter, Amanda "Mandy," of Dubuque; two brothers, Bob (Chris) Bauer and Dennis "Harry" (Julie) Bauer; three sisters, Donna (Mike) Dillon, Lois Mayne (and friend, Al) and Barbara (Ronnie) Weidenbacher, all of Dubuque; a dear aunt, Shirley Melloy, of Dubuque; an uncle, Ken Melloy, of Detroit, Mich.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an uncle, John Melloy.

A special thank-you to Sister Emily Bormann and Hospice for the care and kindness they gave Rick.

Douglas J. Bennett

POTOSI, Wis. - Douglas J. Bennett, 59, of Surprise, Ariz., formerly of Potosi, died of natural causes Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at home.

Donald L. Conlon

Mr. Donald L. Conlon, 81, of 432 Summit St., died at 6:45 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, from heart related complications while on his daily walk on Thursday.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Raphael's Cathedral. Entombment will be in St. Joseph Chapel Mausoleum at Mount Olivet Cemetery , Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at St. Raphael's Cathedral. The Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on June 3, 1921, in Dubuque, son of Linus W. and Mary V. (Splinter) Conlon.

He married Anna Mae Meyer, of Holy Cross, Iowa, on May 30, 1949, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. They enjoyed more than 50 years of marriage together. Family was very special to them, their nine children and 19 grandchildren were their foremost priority in life. Anna Mae died on May 25, 2000.

Don enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and served in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Medals included Bronze Stars for battle and meritorious service. After World War II his patriotism continued as he was a second lieutenant in the National Guard.

Don was past president of the Iowa Land Title Association and past president and owner of Abeln Abstract Co., where he continued to work until his death. A notable achievement was his title research for the city of Dubuque's floodwall project. He had a passion for his profession for more than 56 years and was highly regarded for his expertise.

He was a graduate of the former Bayless Business College, an active parishioner of St. Raphael's Cathedral and member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus Council 510. Sports were always a part of his life; particularly baseball and tennis, as well as any physical activity.

Surviving are nine children, Gary T. (Margie) Conlon, Cathy E. (James) Giese, Marna K. (Mark) Sullivan, Lynn M. (Jack) McCullough, Kevin D. (Kathy) Conlon and Daniel J. (Jennifer) Conlon, all of Dubuque, Anne M. White, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Luke E. (Nancy) Conlon, of Dubuque, and Mark L. (Amy) Conlon, of Minneapolis; 19 grandchildren, Katherine, Elizabeth and Charles Conlon, Michael, Daniel and Carolyn Giese, Kara (Nick) Klenske, Erin and Matthew Sullivan, Dylan McGuill, Bridget and Patrick McCullough, Natalie and Alexander Conlon, Conlon and Anna White, William and Carolyn Conlon, and Mae Conlon; four sisters, Mrs. Kay (Robert) Hoffman, Mrs. Dorothy (Tom) Dempsey, Mrs. Donna (Elmer) Feldman and Mrs. Beverly (Herbert) Weidinger.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Eileen (Rohner) Beadle.

Memorials may be given to St. Raphael's Cathedral, Holy Family Catholic Schools, Dubuque County Right to Life, the Dubuque Boys and Girls Club and to a charity of your choice.

The Conlon family expresses their sincere gratitude to all of the wonderful people who administered care to Don, with special thanks to the St. Raphael's Cathedral "Family."
