Services will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Kendall Funeral Home, Boscobel, where friends may call after 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be in Union Hill Cemetery at a later date.

Gladys M. Carr

DELMAR, Iowa - Gladys M. Carr, 74, of Charlotte, Iowa, formerly of Delmar, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Carson & Son Funeral and Cremation Services, Maquoketa, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery , Delmar.

Emma F. Ludovissy

Emma F. Ludovissy, 101, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of North Buena Vista, Iowa, died at 11:40 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at the care center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, North Buena Vista. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where arrangements are pending.

Donald N. Hocking

Donald N. Hocking, 82, of 3005 14th Ave., Marion, Iowa, formerly of Dubuque, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center, following a short illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Marion, with the Rev. John Gossman officiating. Graveside services and burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Olivet Cemetery , Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m.

He was born on Feb. 19, 1920, in Dubuque, son of Nelson and Anna (Gartner) Hocking. He married Mary Loewen on Oct. 16, 1948, in Dubuque.

He was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School. He was a World War II Army veteran.

He worked for the Milwaukee Railroad as an assistant cashier for 40 years, retiring in 1982. After retiring he worked for the Marion YMCA.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church; volunteered at Central YMCA; and was a loyal Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. He enjoyed his family and swam daily at the YMCA.

Surviving are his wife, Mary; a daughter, Linda (Ken) Kelchen, of Dyersville, Iowa; a son, Thomas (Sheila), of Solon, Iowa; a brother, Carl Hocking, of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Sean, Kimberly, Kevin (Mimi), Peter John and Andrew Kelchen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.

A Donald N. Hocking Memorial Fund has been established.

GALENA, Ill. - Ronald E. Novotny, 70, of 604 Franklin St., Galena, died at 2:05 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at home.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kitchen, Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, 235 S. Bench St., Galena. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kitchen, Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, 235 S. Bench St., Galena, where arrangements are pending.

Morna L. Olsen

FENNIMORE, Wis. - Morna L. Olsen, 93, of Fennimore, formerly of Mount Hope, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at the Fennimore Good Samaritan Center.

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. - Iona M. Kernan, 80, of Prairie du Chien, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at home.

Catherine M. Sterk

MAQUOKETA, Iowa - Catherine M. Sterk, 94, of Maquoketa, died Monday morning, Oct. 21, 2002, at Crestridge Nursing Home, Maquoketa.

Delbert G. Hooks

Delbert G. (George) Hooks, 81, of 2261 Chaney Road, formerly of 3623 Crescent Ridge, died of natural causes at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery , where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 6. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 6:30 p.m.

Mr. Hooks worked in the construction business for 48 years.

He was born on Aug. 22, 1921, in Dubuque, son of George and Florence (Lightfoot) Hooks. He married Lillian Jestice on Sept. 27, 1943, in Philadelphia.; she died on Dec. 11, 1998. He later married Frances Stott on March 25, 2002, in Scottsdale, Ariz.

He served in the Navy for four years. He was stationed at different overseas locations and served aboard the USS Coolbaugh during World War II.

After his retirement, he was involved with the Disabled American Veterans, Dubuque, making sure many of his fellow veterans made it to appointments in Iowa City, thanks to his care and coordination of the DAV van.

He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish and the Carpenters Local 678. He also was a member of the DAV, Chapter 6 and the Destroyer Escort Association.

Surviving are his wife, Frances Hooks, of Dubuque; four daughters, Karen (Mike) Kenline, of West Des Moines, Mary (Tom) Montag, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Linda (Jim) Melloy, of Dubuque, and Lisa (John) Habben, of Waterloo; two sons, Erv (Deb) Hooks and Brian (Deb) Hooks, both of Dubuque; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Ruer, of Dubuque; and a brother, Clem (Lorna) Specht, of Maquoketa.

He was preceded in death by a son, George Hooks, in 1985; three sisters, Alice Hooks, Anne Roach and Evelyn Peck; and two brothers, Virgil Hooks and John Specht.

The family wishes to express their deep and heartfelt appreciation for the loving care extended to Delbert by the "angels" on earth, Hospice of Dubuque.

Sylvester N. Stoffel

RICKARDSVILLE, Iowa - Sylvester N. Stoffel, 85, of 20835 Route 52 N., Rickardsville, died at 10:25 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at Ennoble Manor Care Center, 2000 Pasadena Drive, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rickardsville. Burial will be in the church Cemetery , where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, Dubuque, where there will be a parish wake service at 3:30 p.m. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Mr. Stoffel was employed for 34 years as an electrician at John Deere Dubuque Works prior to retiring.

He was born on Dec. 30, 1916, in Rickardsville, son of Jacob and Margaret (Breitbach) Stoffel. He married LeMae C. Backes on Oct. 14, 1947, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, a member of the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque, and was a World War II Navy veteran, having served at Pearl Harbor.

In his spare time, he loved to visit with his friends and neighbors and was an avid gardening enthusiast. He also was a man of strong faith and a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather.

Surviving are his wife, LeMae C. (Backes) Stoffel; a daughter, Connie (Stanley) Plower, of Anamosa, Iowa; three grandchildren, Leslie (Bobby) Ayers and Valerie and Jason Mardorf; and a sister, Bernice Meyer, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, Peter, Matt, Jacob, Alphonse, John, Frank and George; and four sisters, Cecilia Loch, Clara Klein, Christina Gansemer and Anna Brehm.

In lieu of flowers, a Sylvester N. Stoffel Memorial Fund has been established by his family.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to our great neighbors and friends who assisted us and furnished so much wonderful food during Syl's illness and also to Vic Leibfried and Rev. Thomas Zinkula for bringing Holy Communion to us while Syl was confined to home.

Martha L. Reamer

FENNIMORE, Wis. - Martha L. Reamer, 88, of Pontiac, Ill., formerly of Rockford, Ill., and Fennimore, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Bloomington, Ill.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, with burial in Prairie Cemetery , both in Fennimore.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Larson Family Funeral Home, Fennimore.

Ruth M. Luttenberg

Ruth M. Luttenberg, 88, of 840 Hawkeye Drive, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where arrangements are pending.

Lola Tvrdik

Lola Tvrdik, 79, of Chadron, Neb., formerly of Dubuque, passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Rapid City (S.D.) Regional Hospital.

Services were held Oct. 9 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Chadron. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery , Epworth, Iowa, at a later date. The Chamberlain Funeral Home, Chadron, was in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Oct. 2, 1923, in Dubuque, daughter of Emil and Josephine (Horsefield) Nebel. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1942. She married William Tvrdik in 1946, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

She is survived by and will be greatly missed by six children, Susan (Butch) Wascher, of Granbury, Texas, Jean Tvrdik, of Wheaton, Ill., Jo (Knute) Dresden, of Aurora, Ill., Timothy (Linda) Tvrdik, of Littleton, Colo., Jaime (Tamie) Tvrdik, of Dixon, Calif., and Mary (Carl) Baehler, of Chadron; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruby Bahl, of Fort Madison, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William, in 1974; and a son, Jude Joseph, in 1954.

Mary Jane Hillebrand

Mrs. Richard (Mary Jane) Hillebrand, 40, of 976 Oak St., died at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at home.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where arrangements are pending.

Arlen M. Bjerke

LANSING, Iowa - Arlen M. Bjerke, 80, of Lansing, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Prairie du Chien (Wis.) Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, with burial in Old East Paint Creek Cemetery , both in Lansing.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home, Lansing.

Malcolm D. Diers

Malcolm D. Diers, 89, of ManorCare Health Services, formerly of 2725 Beverly, died at 5:25 a.m. Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at ManorCare.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview, with burial in Dubuque Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Diers worked for the Dubuque Community School District until his retirement.

He was born on May 23, 1911, in Galena, Ill., son of Christian and Maude (Eustice) Diers. He married Dorothy Garrett in 1929, at Grace Episcopal Church, Galena; she died in 1981.

He was an avid gardener and fisherman. He was a member of the Pro Bass Field Testers Club and the Rifleman's Club.

Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Bersley, of Dubuque; a special niece, Joanne (Jim) Burgus, of Dubuque; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and five great-great- grandchildren.

A Malcolm Diers Memorial Fund has been established.
