Roger William Powell, 49, of Burlington, Iowa died at 1:35 a.m. Saturday, March 17, 2007, at Great River Medical Center.

Born June 28 1957 in Burlington, he was the son of Harold Harry and Rosie Mary Gaylord Powell.

Mr. Powell worked as a truck driver.

Survivors include two daughters, Amanda J. Powell and Megan D. Powell both of Davenport, Iowa; eight brothers and sisters, Ronald (Sandy) Powell of Burlington, Susan (David) Hester of Mediapolis, Iowa, Jerry (Cheryl) Powell and Frederick Powell both of Burlington; Sally Cline of Ft. Myers, Florida, Rebecca (Raymond) Douglas of Washington state, Betty (David) Lemke of Tucson, Arizona and Lorraine (Al) Leffler also of Ft. Myers.

His parents preceded him in death.

Virginia B. Putnam
March 11, 1923 - November 16, 2006

PUTNAM (LONG), VIRGINIA B. – age 83, of Burlington, IA, devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, November 16, 2006. Virginia married Leroy E. Putnam on October 25, 1942 and celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this year. She was a lifelong member of Oak Street Baptist Church. Virginia served on many church committees and enjoyed delivering flowers and service tapes to those who could not attend church. She worked for many years at Long’s Grocery (which was owned by her Mother, Minnie (Schulz) Long and was also employed by both AT&T and JI Case Company. Virginia spent years by her husband’s side with their business, Auto Body Company. Above all, Virginia was dedicated to her family, who loved her as dearly as she loved them. She always had a new picture and story to share about one of her children or grandchildren. Her family, friends and home were always at the center of her life. She had grace, dignity and optimism, which she maintained even throughout her struggle with her health over the past few years. Her smile will be remembered by all who came to know her, as it was very special. She was preceded in death by her Father; Harry Long, her Mother; Minnie (Schulz) Long, and her brother Harry Long, Junior. Survivors include her devoted husband of sixty-four years, Leroy E. Putnam of Burlington, children and their spouses; Gary and LaDonna Putnam of Burlington, IA, Jerry and Susan Putnam of Oklahoma City, OK; James Putnam of Burlington, IA and Jayne and Jim Burritt of Knoxville, TN. Grandchildren, Ryan Putnam, Kansas City, MO; David Putnam (Tabitha Hunter), Davenport, IA; Andrea Burritt, Knoxville, TN; Adam (Kim) Burritt, Cedar Rapids, IA; Patrick Burritt, Knoxville, TN; and Lee Putnam Jr. of Burlington, IA. Great Grandchildren, Emma and Hayden of Davenport, IA and Megan of Cedar Rapids, IA.

Jack Lewis Ramey
January 3, 1920 - November 2, 2005

Jack Lewis Ramey, 85, of West Burlington, died at 3:40 a.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2005, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born January 3, 1920, in Galesburg, Illinois he was the son of Dewey Edward and Florence Christine Travis Ramey. On November 24, 1946 he married Lois Florene Melvin in Old Bedford, Illinois.

Mr. Ramey worked as a carpenter for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for 34 years where he also served as union negotiator. He also had a saw sharpening business.

He was a graduate of Kirkwood High School in Kirkwood, Illinois. He was a World War II Navy and Army veteran, serving in the Navy from 1937 to 1940 and in the Army from 1942 to 1945, where he attained the rank of staff sergeant. He was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where he held various positions including elder and serving on the building committee. He was a member of American Legion Post 52 and Carpenters Local No. 410. He enjoyed motorcycles, hunting, fishing and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Ramey of West Burlington; one daughter, Sandra Bannier of Georgia; three sons, Ray Lewis Ramey of Maryland, Roy Glenn Ramey of Utah and Randall Gene Ramey of Illinois; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

His parents and one stepbrother preceded him in death.

A memorial has been established for First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Ramona Rose Ramsdell
November 9, 1929 - July 22, 2006

Ramona Rose Ramsdell, 76, of Burlington died Saturday, July 22, 2006 in her home.

Born November 9, 1929 in Marengo, Iowa, she was the daughter of Otto G. and Ursula M. Scott Stephan.

She married Glen Ramsdell on March 11, 1948 in Toledo, Ohio. He preceded her in death on January 16, 1991.

Ramona worked in the production department at Sylvania and General Electric for 17 ˝ years.

She was a member of SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington and the Ladies of the Moose. She loved to travel and go to auctions and to the casino with her special friend Marcella. She also enjoyed camping and GE and Sylvania luncheons.

Survivors include her two children, Ronald J. (Janet) Ramsdell of Burlington, and Jeannine M. (Jerry) Landrum of Burlington; eight grandchildren, Taylor, Chailey, Landon, Collin, Jordon and Trent Ramsdell and Emily and Eric Landrum; one great granddaughter, Dailee Ramsdell; and two sisters Mary (Leroy) Rosenbury of Burlington, and Lois (Harold) Drayhos of Luzerne, Iowa.

Her husband Glen, her parents, a daughter Linda K. Ramsdell in infancy, grandson Travis Ramsdell and a brother Charles Stephan preceded her in death.

Frances D. Reed
August 21, 1903 - January 27, 2006

-Visitation: Thursday, February 2nd from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM in Lunning Chapel

- Family will receive Friends: Friday, February 3rd from 10:00 AM until the time of service at First Christian Church

- Funeral Service: Friday, February 3rd, 11:00 AM in First Christian Church
Rev. Tom Smith will officiate.

Following services Mrs. Reed's body will be cremated.

- Inurnment will be at a later date: Glade City Cemetery , Blandsville, Illinois

Frances Daniels Reed, 102, of Burlington died at 10:10 a.m. Friday, January 27, 2006, at Bickford Cottage in Burlington.

Born August 21, 1903 in Blandinsville, Illinois, she was the daughter of George Thomas and Pearle Alta Voorhees Daniels. On August 3, 1924 she married Brooks Reed in Burlington. He died July 29, 1966.

Mrs. Reed was a graduate of Blandinsville High School and Lombard College (now known as Knox College) in Galesburg, Illinois. Prior to her marriage she was a schoolteacher.

She was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) since 1936, Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, Elks Auxiliary, and Good Neighbors Club. She was a 50 plus years member of White Shrine, E.C. Blackmar Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, T.T.T. Society, Delta Zeta Sorority and Burlington Golf Club. She was an avid bridge player.

Survivors include her son, George (Mary) Reed of Burlington; two grandsons, Bryan (Kathryn) Reed and Tom (Elizabeth) Reed; and four great grandchildren, Brent, Brooke, David, and Kelly.

Her husband; one daughter, Georgiana Reed; and parents preceded her in death.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Lewis Henry Reed
April 15, 1927 - December 29, 2006

-Friends May Call: Thursday, January 4th, from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM in Lunning Chapel
-Family Visitation: Thursday, January 4th, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM
-Funeral Service: Wednesday, January 5th, 10:30 AM in Lunning Chapel
An Eagles Memorial Service will be conducted at the beginning of the funeral service.
Pastor Tom Smith will officiate.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles International President Bill Loffer will give the eulogy.
The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites.

A memorial has been established for the National Eagles Lewis Reed Spinal Cord Injury Fund.

Lewis Henry Reed, 79, of Burlington, Iowa and formerly a 25-year resident of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, died on Friday, December 29, 2006.

Born April 15, 1927 on a farm near LaHarpe, Illinois, he was the son of Henry and Frances Melvin Reed. On June 5, 1971 he married Carol Maddox in Galesburg, Illinois.

Mr. Reed was a high school graduate of LaHarpe school system. He was a WWII Army Veteran serving from 1945-1947 where he earned the Victory Medal.

From 1951 until 1974 he was employed at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and was Manufacturing Superintendent from 1954 until 1974.

In 1975 he and his wife moved to Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, where he worked for the Fraternal Order of Eagles Grand Aerie as Bond Fund Administrator, General Auditor, Membership Director, Sports Director, Assistant to the Grand Worthy President, Financial Advisor, Investment Counselor, C.O.O. and C.E.O. until his retirement on 1998 when he and his wife returned to Burlington.

He was a member of Eagles Aerie #150 for more than 59 years and served as an officer from 1950 –1971, as Aerie President from 1955-1956 and Trustee from 1956-1971, Entertainment Chairman from 1956-1971, and as Chaplain on the Ritual team from 1954-1971. Aerie #150 team won numerous Iowa State Championships and Mr. Reed was selected to All State team during four years, won three first places and five second places in National Competition.

An avid bowler, he won singles event in Iowa Eagle tournament in 1956 and later won the doubles tournament, all events and team tournament. Mr. Reed is the only Iowa Eagle to have won each of the tournaments over the years. He was the first Eagle bowler elected into the Iowa Eagles Bowling Hall of Fame.

At the State level, he served as an officer for ten years, was Iowa State Aerie Membership Director from 1963-1966 and Iowa State President from 1968-1969. He was member of the Iowa State Eagles Hall of Fame and also the Ritual Hall of Fame. He was the Iowa State Father in 2001 and 2005.

At the National level, he was elected to National office in 1969 and served as Conductor, Trustee (four years), first President Elect in 1973-1974 and Grand Worthy President from 1974-1975 and Chairman of the Board for 1975-1976. He was elected to the National Eagles Hall of Fame in 1989, served as Eagles Art Ehrmann Cancer Fund Director from 1975, which included the D.D. Dunlap Kidney Fund and secured the entertainment and emceed the Mr. and Mrs. Banquet from 1977 until his retirement. At the International level, he instituted the first Eagles International Golf Tournament in 1977 and the first Eagles International Horseshoe Tournament in 1980.

At the 2001 Eagles International Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, the delegates voted unanimously to institute a new Eagle Charity Fund to be named the Eagles Lewis Reed Spinal Cord Injury Fund.

He was an honorary Past State President of Michigan, Nebraska, Washington and Illinois Eagles, Grand Old Fart and member of the “Old Farts’ Club”.

He attended 51 consecutive International Grand Aerie Conventions since 1954 and established the “Annual Lew Reed Outstanding Iowa Eagle of the Year Award” with an appropriate plaque being presented at the Iowa Eagles State Conventions.

Mr. Reed was a member of First Christian Church - Disciples of Christ, a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #3478 in Monmouth, Illinois (which he organized), a lifetime member of VFW Post #10102 and a member of American Legion #399 in Okauchee, Wisconsin.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Reed of Burlington; two sisters, Lillian (Bill) Crabill of LaHarpe and JoAnn (Jerry) Greenman of Littleton, Colorado; special niece Norma Jean Bonifay of Davenport, Iowa; many nieces and nephews.
His parents; a brother, James Reed; and a half-brother, Harold Reed preceded him in death.

Mary L. Reeves
January 1, 1927 ~ November 10, 2005

Mary L. “Andy” Reeves, 78 of Burlington died at 2:36 p.m. on Thursday, November 10, 2005 at Rose Bush Gardens Health Center in Burlington.

Born January 1, 1927 in Abingdon, Illinois, she was the daughter of Fred and Esther Krohn Andrews. On August 1, 1948 she married Rodney R. Reeves in Burlington.

Mrs. Reeves was a 1944 graduate of Burlington High School. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and their Homebuilders Class, United Methodist Women and coordinator of the acolytes for the church.

Mrs. Reeves worked at Sylvania, Wilson’s Sewing Center, was a school bus driver for Burlington Community School District and worked at Ace Florist. She also owned and operated Chamberlain House Antiques.

She was a member of Order of Eastern Star, E.C. Blackmar Chapter 306 of Burlington and past treasurer, Burlington Women’s Club Antique Chapter, Historical Society, and the Pottery Club of Abingdon, Illinois. She was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts, Mother Advisor of Rainbow Girls for eight years, Chamber of Commerce Ambassador, volunteer at the Welcome Center, tour guide for Burlington Tourism and Convention Bureau and collected Burlington memorabilia. She had a passion for welcoming people to Burlington and making them feel at home. She loved people and never knew a stranger. Mary was a 37-year breast cancer survivor.

Survivors include her husband, Rodney R. Reeves of Burlington; one son, Donald W. (Valarie) Reeves of Edmond, Oklahoma; one daughter, Martha “Marti” A. (Patrick) Walsh of Meeker, Colorado; four grandchildren, David and D.J. Reeves and Aubrey and Jenna Walsh; two step granddaughters, Diane Himat and Tara Julio; and one brother, Robert E. (Edith) Andrews of Abingdon, Illinois.

An infant son, Roger; her parents; three brothers, Wilford “Cookie” Andrews, Claire Andrews; and William “Bid” Andrews preceded her in death.

A Memorial has been established.
