Helen A. Oglesby

Helen A. Oglesby, 57, of Paducah, Ky., formerly of Dubuque, died at 11 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, at home.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah.

Mrs. Oglesby was a waitress at Pines Restaurant.

Surviving are her husband, Frank C. Oglesby; a daughter, Teresa Dunigan, of Kevil, Ky.; a son, Mark Oglesby, of Dubuque; a sister, Eileen Harrison, of Long Sutton, England; a brother, Peter Avis, of Kings Lynn, England; two grandchildren, Lakyn Dunigan and Jesse Dunigan, both of Kevil; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Edith Avis; and three brothers.

Rosemarie Shumard

Rosemarie Shumard, 75, of 2467 W. 32nd St., died at 2:50 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, at Dubuque Nursing & Rehab Center.

There will be no public services or visitation. Entombment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery , Key West, Iowa. The Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Nov. 29, 1927, in McKees Rocks, Pa., daughter of Rose Haines. She married William Shumard on March 15, 1952, in Cleveland.

She enjoyed ceramic arts and made several villages and pottery.

Surviving are her husband, William "Bill" Shumard, of Dubuque; a daughter, Leslie (Steve) Neyens, of Dubuque; and a brother, Melvin Keating, of Napa Valley, Calif.

She was preceded in death by a son, Wes Shumard, in 1999.

The family wishes to extend a thank-you to Hospice of Dubuque, Dubuque Nursing & Rehab and Dr. Khatib and Dr. Payne for the care and kindness they gave to Rosemarie.

Ruth M. Houghton

CASSVILLE, Wis. Ruth M. Houghton, 74, of Cassville, entered into eternal life, with her family at her side, Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, at home, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Cassville, with the Rev. Ruth Ann Shriver officiating. Burial will be in the Cassville Cemetery . Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Martin Page Funeral Home, Cassville. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Mrs. Houghton taught Sunday school at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Cassville, where she was financial secretary for many years.

She was born on April 8, 1929, in Lancaster, daughter of Harry and Clara (Bryhan) Bossert. She married Melvin Houghton on July 19, 1947, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Burton.

She loved birds and flowers and enjoyed playing cards. Keeping her family well-fed was a priority for Ruth, and she was known for her wonderful poppyseed cakes. She dearly loved her family and friends.

Surviving are her husband, Mel Houghton, of Cassville; four children, Ruth Ann (Stephen) Kundert, of Madison, Deborah (David) Byrge, of West Allis, Daniel (Leah Gaye) Houghton, of Havana, Ill., and Mary (Randy) Hatlen, of Lomira; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, Louis Bossert, of Cassville; a sister-in-law, Clarice Bossert, of Greendale; her stepmother, Helen Bossert, of Lancaster; a half-brother, Bruce Bossert, of Nashville, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Gainford and Harlyn Bossert; and a sister-in-law, Helen Bossert.

David J. Nagle

David Joseph Nagle, 39, of Plano, Texas, formerly of Dubuque, died peacefully at home on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1755 Delhi St., Dubuque. Arrangements are pending at the Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home, Dallas.

Neil J. Beecher

Neil J. Beecher, 20, of 7361 Grantwood Court, Bellevue, Iowa, formerly of Dubuque, passed away suddenly at 5:25 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, while recovering from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on July 15, 2003.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Roselawn Chapel at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, with the Rev. James T. Chappell officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery . Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where there will be a wake service at 5 p.m.

He was born on May 13, 1983, in Dubuque, son of John P. Beecher and Cheryl L. Rogan.

Neil grew up in Dubuque and graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 2001. He worked as a laborer at Eagle Window and Door Co.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing and boating. He also loved spending time with friends and family.

Surviving are his parents, John (Claudia) Beecher, of Dubuque, and Cheryl (Walter) Rogan, of Bellevue; three sisters, Mary Beecher and Samantha and Ali Rogan; a brother, Cole Beecher; his paternal grandmother, Flora Lou Beecher, of Dubuque; his maternal grandmother, M. Darlene Goffinet, of Dubuque; his godmother, Crissy Thoms, of Dubuque; and his godfather, Joe Beecher, of Oskaloosa, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Jack Beecher, on Feb. 14, 1967; and his maternal grandfather, Glen Goffinet, on July 20, 1998.

A Neil J. Beecher Memorial Fund has been established by the family.

Ruth M. Houghton

CASSVILLE, Wis. - Ruth M. Houghton, 74, of Cassville, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, at home.

Arrangements are pending at the Martin Page Funeral Home, Cassville.

Norbert E. Willging

Norbert Edgar Willging, 87, of Lake Crystal, Minn., formerly of Dubuque, died Monday evening, Aug. 11, 2003, at the Lake Crystal (Minn.) Health Care Center.

Memorial services will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, Lake Crystal, with the Rev. Neal Wilkinson officiating. Friends may call after 11:30 a.m. Monday at the church. The Lake Crystal Mortuary, Mankato, Minn., is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on April 16, 1916, in Dubuque, son of Edgar and Anna (Kerper) Willging. He married Jeanne Rastatter on June 12, 1943, in Dubuque.

He had served in the Army Air Corp.

Surviving are his wife, Jeanne Willging, of Lake Crystal; seven children, Patricia Willging, of New Orleans, La., Ann (David) Keith, of Edinburgh, Scotland, Miriam (John) Hottinger, of Mankato, David (Lisa) Willging, of New Hope, Minn., Julie (Ken) Sigmon, of Omaha, Neb., Mary (Roy) Genevich, of Hastings, Minn., and Robert (Deirdre) Willging, of Rhinelander, Wis.; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marge Kluck and Sister Margaret Ann Willging, both of Dubuque; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Pat, Herb and Gene; and a brother-in-law, Ray Kluck.

Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association and Alzheimer's Association.

M. Joyce McQuillen

M. Joyce McQuillen, 65, of 2955 Kaufmann Ave., formerly of Epworth, Iowa, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at her son's home in Cascade, Iowa, after a short battle with cancer.

Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Epworth, with the Rev. Joseph McDermott, SVD, officiating and the Rev. Raymond Burkle concelebrating. Private burial will be held at a later date. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Epworth, where there will be a wake service at 4:30 p.m.

She was born on Sept. 6, 1937, in Dubuque, into a large and loving family, daughter of Joseph and Hazel (Jochum) McQuillen. She was married at the age of 19 and had three adoring children.

She attended the rural Peosta (Iowa) schools and was a graduate of the former St. Columbkille's High School, Dubuque.

She worked as a secretary at the former St. Patrick's School in Epworth during the years her children attended elementary school.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Parish, Epworth.

Joyce was most proud of her children, grandchildren and her Irish ancestry. She had the great pleasure of traveling to the beautiful country of Ireland.

For years, Joyce battled Behcet's Syndrome. She traveled numerous times to the Mayo Clinic for treatment and touched the hearts of many sick people. Her illness never took her Irish spirit. Dr. Dall, of Dubuque, provided extraordinary care for Joyce. She was very personable and never afraid to talk with strangers. She loved to learn about other people and talk about her grandchildren. She cherished her family time and loved to sing Irish songs.

Surviving are three children, Dr. Steven (Candy) Bradley, of Cascade, Kevin (Lori) Bradley, of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Kelli (Gary) Willman, of Farley, Iowa; four grandchildren, Timothy and Sean Bradley, both of Palm Harbor, and Tasha and Tyler Willman, both of Farley; two step grandchildren, Mathew and Melanie Menster, both of Cascade; three sisters, JoAnn (Frank) Delany, of Dubuque, Carol (John) Houtakker, of Benton, Wis., and Sharon (Joe) McAuliffe, of Epworth; and five brothers, Jim (Sheila) McQuillen, of Papillion, Neb., Dick (Janet) McQuillen, of Dubuque, Joe (Corinne) McQuillen and Pat (Judy) McQuillen, both of Peosta, and Tom (Joyce) McQuillen, of Plattsmouth, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Dorothy McQuillen and Lois McDermott.

A Joyce McQuillen Memorial Fund has been established.

The family of Joyce would like to thank Dr. William Dall and his staff and Hospice of Dubuque for all the wonderful care given to Joyce.

Genevieve F. Bassler

Genevieve F. Bassler, 78, of Dubuque, formerly of Otter Creek, Iowa, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at home.

Frank P. Regan

Mr. Frank P. Regan, 68, of 18844 Riverside Road, died at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at home, after a long illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery . Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a Sacred Heart Parish Christian wake service at 4:30 p.m.

Mr. Regan worked at John Deere Dubuque Works for 28 years.

He was born on Dec. 28, 1934, in Waukon, Iowa, son of Hugh and Theresa (Griffin) Regan. He married Naomi D. Kelley on April 14, 1956, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church.

He lived in the Dubuque area most of his life. He was an avid Notre Dame football fan.

Surviving are his wife, Naomi Regan, of Dubuque; two daughters, Lorri Regan and Kelli (Lonie) Brown, both of Dubuque; a son, Daniel (Carol) Regan, of Dubuque; two sisters, LaVonne Kerth and Rita Mae Lang, both of Dubuque; a brother, Paul (Shirley) Regan, of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Kevin and Codi Regan and Kristan and Hannah Brown; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marcella McGeough; and two brothers, Larry and Raymond Regan.

Myrtle C. Pierce

Myrtle C. Pierce, 94, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of St. Mary's Apartments, 2955 Kaufmann Ave., died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today. Burial will be in the East Dubuque (Ill.) Cemetery.

She was born on Feb. 4, 1909, in Sherrill, Iowa, daughter of William and Clara (Vyverberg) Schloz. She married David Pierce on Oct. 20, 1934, in Sherrill; he passed away on Jan. 18, 1981.

She was among the first class to graduate from Dubuque Senior High School.

David and Myrtle were their families biggest fans in all their athletic accomplishments.

Myrtle was a dedicated homemaker, wonderful cook and spent her life in service to others. She was an amazing woman who left the world a better place with all the love she shared.

She had been a longtime member of the Grandview Avenue United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Delores Merritt and Susan (James) Herron, both of Dubuque; six grandchildren, Jeffery, Gregory, Daniel (Wendy) Merritt and Mark (Zoe) Merritt, Jane (Todd) Spurling and Julie (Joel) Carr; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rosa Terlouw, of Grand Junction, Colo.

She also was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Thomas Merritt; and two sisters and four brothers.

A Myrtle C. Pierce Memorial Fund has been established.

The family would like to thank Stonehill Care Center for all the wonderful and loving care received this past year; and also a special thank-you to Dr. Dall for his many years of care and concern.
