Jim L. Stangeland, 58, of 2473 Birchwood Drive, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where arrangements are pending.

Ferne Brandt

LANSING, Iowa - Ferne Brandt, 83, of Lansing, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in Gethsemane Cemetery , both in Lansing.

Friends may call from 3:45 to 7 p.m. today at Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home, Lansing.

Veronica M. Thomas

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. - Veronica M. Thomas, 97, of Prairie du Chien, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery , both in Prairie du Chien.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Garrity Funeral Home, Prairie du Chien.

Ronald J. Theisen

HOLY CROSS, Iowa - Ronald J. Theisen, 44, of Denver, formerly of Holy Cross, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at home, after a brief illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas Zinkula officiating. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery , where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 656, of Farley. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kramer Funeral Home, Holy Cross, where there will be a parish scripture service at 5 p.m.

Mr. Theisen worked at Mike Naughton Ford as an Internet coordinator and as a driver with White Dove Limo Service in Denver.

He was born on June 11, 1959, in Dubuque, son of James William and Shirley Ann (Manders) Theisen.

He graduated from the former Leo High School, Holy Cross. He served in the Army from 1977 to 1980, and then moved to Colorado.

He was an avid fisherman, golfer and pool player. He enjoyed spending time with his family, nieces, nephews and friends.

Surviving are his parents, Jim and Shirley Theisen, of Holy Cross; a brother, Ken (Cyndi) Theisen, of Holy Cross; three sisters, Patty (Pat) Steffen, of Luxemburg, Nancy (Joe) Oberbroeckling, of Asbury, and Karen (Lynn) Ludovissy, of North Buena Vista; five nephews, Kyle, Keith, Ben, Zach and Jake; and four nieces, Christie, Amber, Hanna and Emma.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph and Christina Manders and Lawrence and Cecelia Theisen.

In lieu of flowers, a Ronald J. Theisen Memorial Fund has been established.

Ronald V. Larkin

EAST DUBUQUE, Ill. - Ronald V. "Ron" Larkin, 62, of 19070 Route 5 West, East Dubuque, died at 4 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2003, at home.

Toby G. Skemp

HAZEL GREEN, Wis. - Toby G. Skemp, 43, of Wrightsville Beach, N.C., formerly of Hazel Green, passed away Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at home. Toby was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and gallantly battled the cancer for seven years.

Private graveside services will be held on Saturday. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Casey Funeral Home, 123 N. Jackson St., Cuba City.

A native of southwest Wisconsin, he was born on Dec. 17, 1959, son of Harold Webster and Alice (Klaas) Skemp.

He graduated from Southwestern High School in Hazel Green and received his college degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

He was a successful businessman and ascended to the ranks of vice president and controller for Chloride Co.

He was an active member of the Wrightsville (N.C.) United Methodist Church. He found great joy in serving the church. His vast financial skills assisted the church in many areas.

Toby and his wife, Lisa, loved to travel. Each summer, they returned to Toby's childhood home to visit relatives and friends. Their domestic travels took them to Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, California and Texas. Their international travels included a host of Caribbean Islands, England and Spain. Toby's charisma, high spirit and taste for life were the essence of his being. He had a profound influence on his wife, family, friends and co-workers. He touched the lives of all those he encountered, friends and strangers alike, and his ability to listen and engage in boundless conversation was his strong suit.

Surviving are his dedicated, loving and supportive wife, Lisa Weeks Skemp; three sisters, Mrs. Carol Hart, of Los Angeles, Mrs. Penny (Steve) Eldred, of San Diego, and Miss Sarah Skemp, of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; four brothers, Mr. Jay (Kathy) Skemp, of Mequon, Mr. Kim (Cindy) Skemp and Mr. Rocky (Jill) Skemp, both of Platteville, and Mr. Todd (Marilyn) Skemp, of Ashburn, Va.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lori (Terry) Boldt, of Bolivia, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1980; his mother in 1996; and a nephew, Benjamin Skemp.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Toby's name to the Wrightsville United Methodist Church, 4 Live Oak Drive, Wrightsville Beach, N.C. 28480.

Lisa and family would like to express their gratitude and special thanks to friends and family for their love and support over the past seven years. A special thank-you to the various medical professionals for their care and assistance.

James A. Weiland

James A. Weiland, 76, of 1182 Locust St., died at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at home, with his wife at his side.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St. Friends may call from 3 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, where there will be a parish wake service at 4 p.m.

Mr. Weiland was the founder and owner of the James A. Weiland Insurance Agency, established in 1957. He was associated with the Transamerica-Occidental Life Insurance Co. since 1959, and was the general agent in the Dubuque area since 1961. He retired in 1989.

He was born on Oct. 17, 1926, in Dubuque County, son of Leo T. and Ethel (Brown) Weiland. He married Jean K. Kendrick on Aug. 7, 1948, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dubuque.

Jim served with the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific and the South China Sea aboard a patrol craft, the USS PT-1086.

Jim was a former member of the Dubuque Golf and Country Club and a member and past president of the 330 Club of the Dubuque Shooting Society. He also was a member of the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6 and was honored as a 50-year member on May 17, 2003, with an award and dinner. Jim also was a former member of the Elks Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Knights of Columbus.

Jim was a volunteer at the Mines of Spain hiking trail.

Surviving are his wife, Jean K. Weiland; a daughter, Tracy M. (Lee) Baumhover, of Davenport, Iowa; a brother, Thomas L. (Betty) Weiland, of Dubuque; and a brother-in-law, Gene Reiter, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ethel V. Reiter; and a brother, Roland A. Weiland.

A James A. Weiland Memorial Fund has been established.

M. Joyce McQuillen

M. Joyce McQuillen, 65, of 2255 Kaufmann Ave., formerly of Epworth, Iowa, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at her son's home in Cascade, Iowa.

Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Epworth. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Reiff Funeral Home, Epworth, where arrangements are pending.

Frank P. Regan

Frank P. Regan, 68, of 18844 Riverside Road, died at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where arrangements are pending.

Norbert E. Willging

Norbert Edgar Willging, 87, of Lake Crystal, Minn., formerly of Dubuque, died Monday evening, Aug. 11, 2003, at Lake Crystal Health Care Center.

Memorial services will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, Lake Crystal, where friends may call after 11:30 a.m. Monday. Arrangements are pending at Lake Crystal Mortuary, Mankato, Minn.

Myrtle C. Pierce

Myrtle C. Pierce, 94, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of St. Mary's Apartments, 2599 Kaufmann Ave., died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday. Arrangements are pending.

Helen J. Gregersen

MANCHESTER, Iowa - Helen J. Gregersen, 72, of Manchester, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 12, 2003, at Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, after a long illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, with burial in Oakland Cemetery , both in Manchester.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester.

Helen I. Munns

FENNIMORE, Wis. - Helen I. Munns, 76, of Fennimore, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at the Fennimore Good Samaritan Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Fennimore United Methodist Church, with Pastor Duane Andrus officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Cemetery , Fennimore. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Larson Family Funeral Home, Fennimore, and after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

She was born on Nov. 11, 1926, in Fennimore, daughter of Chris and Alva (McLimans) Bock. She married Robert M. Witzig in March 1944. She later married Richard Munns on April 26, 1981, in Nashua, Iowa.

Surviving are her husband, Richard Munns, of Fennimore; two children, Betty Lou Cauffman and Tyrone (Karla) Witzig, both of Fennimore; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald (LuEtta) Bock, of Fennimore; and a sister, Florence Wood, of Fennimore.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Raymond W. Kalinowski

TEMPLE HILL, Iowa - Raymond W. Kalinowski, 80, of 1001 Wild Flower Lane, Dyer, Ind., formerly of Temple Hill, died at noon Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at St. Margaret's Hospital, Dyer, following a short illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Temple Hill, with the Rev. Thomas Toale officiating. Burial will be in the church Cemetery , where there will be a flag presentation by the Cascade American Legion Post 528. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m.

Mr. Kalinowski worked at U.S. Steel in Chicago until his retirement.

He was born on Nov. 20, 1922, in Chicago, son of Anthony and Constance (Haczyski) Kalinowski. He married Alberta L. Donahue on Jan. 8, 1944, in Chicago; she preceded him in death on Dec. 29, 1996.

He was a veteran, having served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.

He was a member of St. Maria Garetti Parish in Dyer. Raymond loved fishing and going hunting in the Temple Hill area.

Surviving are two daughters, Sandra (Milton) Gilmore and Linda Summers, both of Munster, Ind.; a son, Patrick (Linda) Kalinowski, of Lake Villa, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Adam and Colleen Summers and Ryan, Rebecca, Cassandra, Tamara and Geneva Kalinowski; a sister-in-law, Darlene Finn, of Cascade; and several nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Ted Summers; 10 brothers and sisters; a brother-in-law, Joe Donahue; and a sister and brother-in-law, Bobbi and William Callahan.

In lieu of flowers, a Raymond W. Kalinowski Memorial Fund has been established for Camp Courageous, P.O. Box 418, Monticello, Iowa 52032.
