Lyle P. Link

Lyle P. Link, 76, of 3153 Pasadena Court, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Resurrection Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Gardens Mausoleum at Mount Calvary Cemetery , where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the church, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m. The Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Link retired from John Deere Dubuque Works after 31 years of service.

He was born on Feb. 11, 1927, in Balltown, Iowa, son of Frank W. and Margaret (Thul) Link. He married Elaine Rettenmeier on April 7, 1956, in Balltown.

He served in the Air Force during the Korean War.

He was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed walking, playing golf and bowling. He was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church and the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6.

Surviving are his wife, Elaine, of Dubuque; three children, Pat (Todd) Davis, of Peoria, Ill., Peg (Steve) DeLoe, of Eldridge, Iowa, and Kevin (Pam) Link, of Davenport, Iowa; six grandchildren, Matthew and Charlie Davis, Denielle, Lindsey and Drew DeLoe and Megan Link; two brothers, Wilmer "Bill" (Edna) Link, of Dubuque; and Leon (Kay) Link, of Holy Cross, Iowa; a sister, Grace Brimeyer, of Dubuque; three sisters-in-law, LaVerne "Honey" Cummer, of Dubuque, Alice Link, of Balltown, and Mary Link, of Franklin, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Sylvester, Herbert and Cletus Link; and a brother-in-law, Leon "Slim" Brimeyer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque and Resurrection Catholic Church.

Michael K. Willer

Michael Kenneth Willer, 48, of Lisbon, Iowa, formerly of Dubuque, Altoona and Fennimore, Wis., died suddenly Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Prock Funeral Home, Eau Claire, Wis., where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday. The Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, Iowa, is in charge of local arrangements.

Mr. Willer worked for Schwan's Sales Enterprises for more than 20 years.

He was born on Dec. 16, 1954, in Quincy, Ill., son of Kenneth and Marjorie (Kierstead) Willer. He was a 1973 graduate of Altoona (Wis.) High School and had served in the Navy.

Surviving are his children, Miranda and Alex Willer, both of Fennimore; four sisters and brothers, Nancy (Greg) Adams, of Dubuque, Mark (Turi) Willer, of Altoona, Kevin (Diane) Willer, of Eau Claire, and Beth (Patrick) Devney, of Brackett, Wis.; 10 nieces and nephews; two great-nephews; and aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Michael K. Willer

Michael Kenneth Willer, 48, of Lisbon, Iowa, formerly of Dubuque, Altoona and Fennimore, Wis., died suddenly Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at home.

Melvin J. Thiltgen

Mr. Melvin J. Thiltgen, 83, of 13042 English Mill Road, died at 2:15 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at home, as the result of cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Nativity Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery , where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m.

Mr. Thiltgen was a route delivery driver for the former Dubuque Lorenz Laundry, which became Aladdin Magiclean. After retiring from Aladdin, he sold feed for a year and worked part time as a security guard at A.Y. McDonald Mfg. Co.

He was born on July 9, 1920, in Menominee, Ill., son of Frank and Emma (Brockman) Thiltgen. Melvin grew up in the Menominee area. On July 25, 1945, he married Mildred Thul; she passed away on Feb. 18, 1986.

He was an Army veteran, serving from 1942 to 1945 and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Melvin served as an ambassador who visited the sick for the Knights of Columbus Council 5513, of Peosta, Iowa, and St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, where he was a charter member. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5513, the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6, the Eagles Club and the Teamsters Union, Local 421.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing and playing euchre. He also was a die-hard Cubs fan.

Surviving are two daughters, Eileen (Tyrone) Putchio and Connie (Carl Severson) Makovec, both of Dubuque; three sons, Don (Peg) Thiltgen, of De Witt, Iowa, Ronnie (fiancee, Candy Maines) Thiltgen, of Gibsonton, Fla., and Dan (fiancee, Connie Harjehausen) Thiltgen, of Dubuque; a sister, Bernice Robbins, of Dubuque; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Melvin also was known to 14 other children in the family as "Grandpa Melvin."

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Tom Thiltgen, on April 23, 1974; a sister, Margaret Fairbanks; and two brothers, Frank and Harry Thiltgen.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque and the American Diabetes Association.

The family would like to thank Dorothy, of Hospice, the grandchildren who cared for their grandpa and a special thanks to Sharon Thul.

Raymond W. Kalinowski

TEMPLE HILL, Iowa - Raymond W. Kalinowski, 80, of 1001 Wild Flower Lane, Dyer, Ind., formerly of Temple Hill, died at noon Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at St. Margaret's Hospital, Dyer.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Temple Hill. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, where arrangements are pending.

Julie Klaas

Julie Ann Marie Klaas, 50, of 659 Girard St. NE, Washington, D.C., formerly of Dubuque, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at Provident Hospital, Washington, D.C., following a long illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Resurrection Catholic Church, Dubuque, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Friday.

The Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., Dubuque, is in charge of arrangements.

Toby G. Skemp

HAZEL GREEN, Wis. - Toby G. Skemp, 43, of Wrightsville Beach, N.C., formerly of Hazel Green, passed away Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at home. Toby was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and gallantly battled the cancer for seven years.

Private graveside services will be held on Saturday. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Casey Funeral Home, 123 N. Jackson St., Cuba City.

A native of southwest Wisconsin, he was born on Dec. 17, 1959, son of Harold Webster and Alice (Klaas) Skemp.

He graduated from Southwestern High School in Hazel Green and received his college degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

He was a successful businessman and ascended to the ranks of vice president and controller for Chloride Co.

He was an active member of the Wrightsville (N.C.) United Methodist Church. He found great joy in serving the church. His vast financial skills assisted the church in many areas.

Toby and his wife, Lisa, loved to travel. Each summer, they returned to Toby's childhood home to visit relatives and friends. Their domestic travels took them to Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, California and Texas. Their international travels included a host of Caribbean Islands, England and Spain. Toby's charisma, high spirit and taste for life were the essence of his being. He had a profound influence on his wife, family, friends and coworkers. He touched the lives of all those he encountered, friends and strangers alike, and his ability to listen and engage in boundless conversation was his strong suit.

Surviving are his dedicated, loving and supportive wife, Lisa Weeks Skemp; three sisters, Mrs. Carol Hart, of Los Angeles, Mrs. Penny (Steve) Eldred, of San Diego, and Miss Sarah Skemp, of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; four brothers, Mr. Jay (Kathy) Skemp, of Mequon, Mr. Kim (Cindy) Skemp and Mr. Rocky (Jill) Skemp, both of Platteville, and Mr. Todd (Marilyn) Skemp, of Ashburn, Va.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lori (Terry) Boldt, of Bolivia, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1980; his mother in 1996; and a nephew, Benjamin Skemp.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Toby's name to the Wrightsville United Methodist Church, 4 Live Oak Drive, Wrightsville Beach, N.C. 28480.

Lisa and family would like to express their gratitude and special thanks to friends and family for their love and support over the past seven years. A special thank you to the various medical professionals for their care and assistance.

Marie J. Meyer

DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Marie J. Meyer, 95, of South San Francisco, Calif., formerly of Dyersville, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Peninsula Hospital, Burlingame, Calif., after a short illness.

Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at St. Francis Cemetery Chapel, Dyersville. Burial of the cremated remains will be at 1 p.m. Friday in St. Francis Cemetery , Dyersville. The Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on July 15, 1907, in Dubuque, daughter of John and Johanna (Burkhart) Wieser.

She worked at Medical Associates as a medical clerk until she married Elmer Meyer on June 26, 1934, in Dubuque. Marie was a homemaker while her husband, Elmer, was co-owner of Meyers Tavern in Dyersville until 1970.

Marie liked to sing and as she grew older, her two favorite songs were "The Old Gray Mare She Ain't What She Used to Be" and "I'm Heading for the Last Roundup." In Dyersville, she liked nothing better than meeting her friends at "Dick's" for an afternoon beer.

Surviving are a son, John P. (Terry) Meyer, of Hillsborough, Calif.; four grandchildren, Joan, Peter, Jenny and Robert; and a stepbrother, Jim Wieser, of San Leandro, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1972; and a son, Billy, in 1938.

Memorials may be sent to the Marie Meyer Memorial Fund, c/o Kramer Funeral Home, 103 Fifth St. SE, Dyersville, Iowa 52040.

Harland W. Cliff

HANOVER, Ill. - Harland W. Cliff, 75, of Tacna, Ariz., formerly of the Hanover and Savanna area, died Friday, May 30, 2003, in Yuma, Ariz.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Saturday.

Surviving are his wife, Audrey, of Elkton, Md.; three sons, Barry (Rose) Cliff, of Dubuque, Bruce (Jeri) Cliff, of The Colony, Texas, and Brian Cliff, of Frisco, Texas; two daughters, Brenda (Jean-Michele) Serra, of Elkton, and Babette Cliff, of Northeast, Md.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald A. (Sallie) Cliff, of Chicago Heights, Ill.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the ALS Foundation.

Ronald V. Larkin

East Dubuque, Ill. - Ronald V. "Ron" Larkin, 62, of 19070 Route 5 West, East Dubuque, died at 4 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Dubuque. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, where arrangements are pending.

Sister Mary Rita Clare McDonald, BVM

Sister Mary Rita Clare McDonald, BVM, 89, of Marian Hall, 1050 Carmel Drive, died at 5:10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Carmel Motherhouse Chapel. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the chapel, where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. The Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Mary Rita Clare taught in elementary schools in Chicago and Grayslake, Ill.; Kansas City, Mo.; Clermont and Mason City, Iowa; and St. Patrick's in Dubuque. She also served in parish ministry at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dubuque.

She was born on Nov. 22, 1913, in Elmo, Wis., daughter of John and Anna (Crimmins) McDonald.

She made her first profession of religious vows on March 19, 1939, and her final profession on Aug. 15, 1944.

Surviving are a sister, Ann Haupert, of Dubuque; nieces and nephews; and the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with whom she shared life for 66 years.

Memorials may be given to the Sisters of Charity, BVM Retirement Fund.
