Charlene M. Horkheimer

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. - Charlene M. Horkheimer, 61, of Prairie du Chien, formerly of Bloomington, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital, after a brief, courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, Prairie du Chien, with the Rev. John Wambach, SJ, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery , Prairie du Chien. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Garrity Funeral Home, Prairie du Chien, where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m., and a wake scripture service at 7:30 p.m.

She was born on Aug. 9, 1941, in Rockford, Ill., daughter of Lyle and Dorothy (Barker) Scarff. Charlene spent her childhood taking care of her siblings.

She married her lifelong companion and best friend, Glenn Horkheimer, on April 8, 1961, at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, Prairie du Chien. She and her husband farmed in the Bloomington area, where Charlene spent her life as a devoted, wonderful, loving and giving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. In 1996, they moved to Prairie du Chien, where Charlene worked for Homeward Bound and Lori Knapp Inc.

Charlene's goal in life was to raise her children, take care of her husband (and everyone else), always putting her family, friends and work first. Mom's favorite saying was, "I'll be fine, everything will be fine" and "Just take one day at a time."

Surviving are her husband of 43 years, Glenn Horkheimer, of Prairie du Chien; a son, Michael (Deb), of Baraboo; two daughters, Susan Jelinek, of Prairie du Chien, and Nancy (Scott) Emery, of Wauzeka; two brothers, Harry (Delila) Scarff, of Moline, Ill., and Leonard (Jennifer) Sells, of Prairie du Chien; three sisters, Dawn (John) Myers, of Erie, Ill., Rebecca (Steven) Fields, of Nettie, W.Va., and Judy (Jim) Garbes, of Milan, Ill.; four grandchildren, Michael and Pamela Feran, and James and Joshua Emery; a special niece, Ashley Sells; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her grandparents, Julia and Albert Barker; a brother, Gene Scarff; a sister, Sandra Horstman; a granddaughter, Shalynn Emery; and a special nephew, Jerry Horstman.

Harry E. Boots

MANCHESTER, Iowa - Harry E. Boots III, 54 of Lake Delhi, rural Manchester, formerly of Monticello, died following a sudden illness Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at the Monticello Medical Center.

FENNIMORE, Wis. - Mrs. Lorraine Christopherson, 79, of Fennimore, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at the Fennimore Good Samaritan Center.

MCGREGOR, Iowa - LaVonne I. Klotzbach, 76, of McGregor, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at Great River Care Center, McGregor, following a long illness.

PEOSTA, Iowa - Louise W. Clark, 78, of 709 Missy Drive, Peosta, died at midnight Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at Luther Manor, Dubuque.

Herman M. Steines

Mr. Herman M. Steines, 82, of 2444 W. 32nd St., died at 7:25 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Sister Humilitas Lamber, OP

CHEWELAH, Wash. - Sister Humilitas Lamber, OP, 87, of St. Joseph Convent, Chewelah, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Services will be Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Chewelah. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery , Spokane, Wash.

She was born on Nov. 11, l915, in Mettelbexbach Saar, Germany, daughter of Ludwig and Maria (Burkhardt) Lamber.

Sister Humilitas made her first profession of religious vows on Aug. 23, 1937, as a Dominican Sister in Speyer, Germany, and eventually joined the Sinsinawa Dominicans. She served the community in the states of Washington, North Dakota and Montana, and lived in retirement with her Dominican Community in Chewelah.

Surviving are a niece and nephew; and her Dominican Sisters, with whom she shared life for 66 years.

Janet L. Meyer

BELLEVUE, Iowa - Mrs. Janet Lee Meyer, 58, of 28801 Hager Lane, Bellevue, formerly of Chicago, died at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at home.

Services will be Saturday at St. Symphorosa Catholic Church, Chicago. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery , Justice, Ill. Friends may call Friday evening at Freeley Funeral Home, Chicago. The Kingery Funeral Home, Bellevue, provided the information.

She was born on Sept. 21, 1944, in Chicago, daughter of Leo and Jessica (Sajak) Eich.

She married William E. Meyer Sr. They lived in Chicago most of their married life, moving to Bellevue five years ago. William was a retired Chicago firefighter.

Surviving are her husband, William E. Meyer, of Bellevue; a daughter, Kimberly (fiance, Brian Tatu) Meyer, of Elgin, Ill.; a son, William (Sandra) Meyer, of Chicago; four grandchildren; two sisters, Joanne (Ronald) Edwards and Patricia (Patrick) McCormick, both of Chicago; and two sisters-in-law, Elaine (Thomas) Hasibar, of Bellevue, and Caroline Petratis, of Chicago.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Alois C. Dotterweich

Alois C. Dotterweich, 80, of 750 Duggan Drive, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where arrangements are pending.

Mildred E. Kunkel Pennekamp

KIELER, Wis. - Mildred E. Kunkel Pennekamp, 88, of Sun Valley Apartments, Dickeyville, formerly of Kieler, died at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Orchard Manor, Lancaster.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Parish, Kieler, with the Rev. Francis Steffen officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Haudenshield Funeral Home, Kieler, where there will be a parish wake service at 3:30 p.m.

She was born on Feb. 5, 1915, in Kimball's Park, Jamestown Township, daughter of Chris and Elizabeth (Foht) Lenstra. She married Martin C. Kunkel on May 3, 1932, at St. Mary's Church, Dubuque.

She was a longtime resident of Kieler and was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish.

She enjoyed her flowers and rides to the river to see Bald Eagles. She also enjoyed time spent with her family and friends. She loved feeding the birds. She was a big fan of watching the Chicago Cubs baseball games. She was an avid card player of Euchre and Solo.

Mildred was a kind and caring person who will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all that knew and loved her.

Surviving are her children, Earl (Nancy) Kunkel, Edward (Norma) Kunkel and Judy (Roger) Budden, all of Cuba City, Joann (Harold) Kruser and Marlene (George) Schuster, both of Kieler, Martin (Jean) Kunkel and Randy (Kim) Kunkel, both of Hazel Green, Ella P. "Pat" (Robert) Tigges, of Dubuque, and Jolene "Cookie" (Bill) Busch, of Dickeyville. Mildred enjoyed the company of her 35 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chris and Elizabeth; her husband, Martin; a sister, Dorothy; brothers, Chris, Orville and Orrin; and a great-grandson, Ben Brant.

Gail H. Udelhofen

Mrs. Joseph P. (Gail H.) Udelhofen, 103, of ManorCare Health Services, formerly of 723 Edith St., died at 3:40 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Chapel services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery . Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Udelhofen did housework for various families, wallpaper hanging and flower arranging.

She was born on April 26, 1900, in Dubuque, daughter of Beecher and Jane Ann (Peacock) Boyes. She married Joseph P. Udelhofen on April 1, 1921, in Dubuque; he died on Aug. 12, 1943.

Gail liked to write poetry and published a book of poetry called "Poems by Hannah." She enjoyed traveling and was always ready to take a ride. She also was an avid card player. She was a true fisherman and often said "An hour of fishing is like a week of vacation."

Surviving are a daughter, Jennie A. (Robert) Burns, of Dubuque; a son, Gerald L. (Joan) Udelhofen, of Dubuque; two daughters-in-law, Dorothy Udelhofen, of Bellevue, Iowa, and Mona Udelhofen, of Dubuque; 21 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 35 great-great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by three daughters, Lila Udelhofen, Mrs. Alfred "Red"(Eileen) Schroeder and Mrs. Arne (Vera) Vertanen; two sons, Claire Udelhofen and Glen Udelhofen; a granddaughter, Sherry Clayton; three sisters, Mrs. Sam (Violet) Burger, Mrs. Nathan (Lillian) Bradley and Mrs. Carl (Gladys) Huseman; and four brothers, Everett ("Pete") Boyes, Norman "Newt" Boyes, Reuben "Happy" Boyes and Victor Boyes.

A Gail H. Udelhofen Memorial Fund has been established.

Walter E. Wernimont

Walter E. "Walt" Wernimont, 85, of 3460 Starlight Drive, formerly of 205 State St., died at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Phillip Kruse officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery , where military rites will be accorded by the Tri-State Vietnam Veterans Association and the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, Ill., where there will be a parish scripture service at 2:30 p.m.

Mr. Wernimont worked as maintenance supervisor at John Deere Dubuque Works for 25 years, retiring in 1979.

He was born on Dec. 9, 1917, near Asbury, Iowa, the son of Michael and Elizabeth (Schilling) Wernimont. He married Lois K. Gilligan on Nov. 22, 1947, at St. Philomena Church in Asbury.

He was a World War II veteran, having served with the Army.

He was a member of the United Automobile Workers Local 94 and a member of the U.A.W. Retirees. He also was a member of St. Columbkille's Parish.

Surviving are his wife, Lois (Gilligan) Wernimont; two daughters, Linda (Lynn) Johnsen, of Lodi, Wis., and Sandra (Robert) Johnsen, of Dubuque; four sons, Alvin C. "Butch" Wernimont, James M. (Rhonda) Wernimont and Thomas J. (Anne) Wernimont, all of Dubuque, and Kenneth E. (Karen) Wernimont, of Davenport, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; three sisters, Loretta Maiers and Marcella (Don) Jewett, both of Dubuque, and Marie (Melvin) Lolwing, of Hazel Green, Wis.; two brothers, Victor (Pauline) Wernimont, of Mount Clemens, Mich., and Vincent Wernimont, of Dubuque; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Joseph, Clarence, Ray, Leo and John at birth; and a sister, Catherine Avery.

Gerald C. Richardson

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - Gerald C. "Dick" Richardson, 81, of Platteville, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Southwest Health Center Hospital, Platteville.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church, Platteville. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Mifflin Cemetery , where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 42 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5274. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Bendorf Funeral Home, Platteville, and after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

Mr. Richardson farmed in the Mifflin and Platteville areas, and worked at Farley and Loetcher Manufacturing Co. in Dubuque and Eastman Cartwright in Platteville as a carpenter. In 1958, he began working in the maintenance department at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville until his retirement in 1984.

He was born on May 16, 1922, in Mifflin, son of Clyde and Mabel (Heffron) Richardson. He married Anna Josephine Fox in 1946. He later married Wilma Roddick on Feb. 25, 1978, at the Platteville United Methodist Church.

He attended grade school in Mifflin and high school in Rewey. He served as a corporal in the Army from 1945 to 1947.

In his younger years, he played baseball and tried out for the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team. After retirement, he developed a love for golf and cards, especially cribbage.

Gerald was a member of United Methodist Church, Platteville, and the American Legion Post 42.

Surviving are his wife, Wilma, of Platteville; his children, Vicki Stauffacher and Carrie (Roger) Rawson, both of Monroe, Stan (Kim) Richardson, of Brookfield, Becky (Les) Warr, of Winnemucca, Nev., and Laurie (Steve) Pluemer, of Saudi Arabia; his stepchildren, Dick (Sherry) Roddick, of Shullsburg, and Sharon (Lenny) Glass, of Platteville; 13 grandchildren; five step grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a step great-grandchild; a sister, Lucille Durni, of Platteville; a sister-in-law, Millie Richardson, of Platteville; and two nieces and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Wilford; and a brother-in-law, Bernell "Bud" Durni.

In lieu of flowers, a Gerald C. "Dick" Richardson Memorial Fund has been established.

Michael J. Deutsch

Michael John Deutsch, 21, of 2125 Stafford St., died Thursday, July 31, 2003, while serving in the Army in Iraq.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Regina Caeli Chapel at Mount Calvary Cemetery , where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery , where military rites will be accorded by the United States Army, the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6, the Dubuque Marine Corps League, the Tri-State Vietnam Veterans Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9663. The Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on April 30, 1982, in Dubuque, son of Wayne A. Sr. and Ileane (Baumgartner) Deutsch.

Michael graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 2000.

He enlisted in the Army on Sept. 5, 2002, and completed basic training at Fort Benning, Ga. He was stationed in Biidgen, Germany, before he went to Iraq.

Surviving are his parents, Wayne Sr. and Ileane Deutsch; two brothers, Wayne (Nadine) Deutsch Jr. and Erich Deutsch, both of Dubuque; a sister, Stephanie Greenwood, of Ankeny, Iowa; and two nieces, Heather and Megan Greenwood, both of Ankeny.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John and Margaret (Bauer) Deutsch; and his maternal grandparents, John C. and Laverne (Klein) Baumgartner.

A Michael John Deutsch Memorial Fund has been established.
