MANCHESTER, Iowa - Walter W. Rumppe, 50, of Manchester, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at home, following an extended illness.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home & Crematory, Manchester, where friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

The body was cremated.

Janet M. Mehl

STOCKTON, Ill. - Janet M. Mehl, 99, of Stockton, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Grandview Estates, Elizabeth.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. today at Wesley United Methodist Church, Stockton. Burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery.

The Hermann Funeral Home, Stockton, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles B. Fick

MONONA, Iowa - Charles Bentien "Charlie" Fick, 84, of Monona, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon, following a short illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Garden City United Methodist Church, Monona. Burial will be in the Monona City Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home, Monona.

Pearl E. Fox

ELIZABETH, Ill. - Pearl Elizabeth Fox, 87, of State College, Pa., formerly of Elizabeth, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at Centre Community Hospital, State College.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Elizabeth, with burial in the church cemetery. There will be no visitation.

The Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth, is in charge of local arrangements.

Mary F. Rutledge

Mary Frances Rutledge, 84, of Kelso, Wash., formerly of Dubuque, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at St. John Medical Center, Longview, Wash.

Private family services will be held. Entombment will be in Resurrection Garden Mausoleum at Mount Calvary Cemetery , Dubuque.

The Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park, Longview, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles A. Blum

GALENA, Ill. - Charles A. "Chuck" Blum, 63, of 2721/2 Meeker St., Galena, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, where friends may call after 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial of the cremated remains will be in Greenwood Cemetery , Galena, where military rites will be accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Lodge, of Galena.

Mr. Blum worked for Chestnut Mountain Resort for nearly 20 years.

He was born on July 19, 1940, in Galena, son of Robert and Clara (Schmid) Blum.

Chuck enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He loved to do yard work and help out the elderly.

Surviving are his mother, Clara; a daughter, Theresa (Fred) Foldenauer, of Galena; two sisters, Marie (Robert) Nelson, of Rockford, and Betty Davis, of Galena; six grandchildren, Michael, Brian, Eboni, Derek, Richard and Frank; and one nephew and three nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert; and two aunts, Elizabeth and Helen.

Walter W. Lovett

Walter W. Lovett, 85, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of 743 Roberts St., died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at the care center.

William J. Lynn

William J. Lynn, 74, of 1222 Blackhawk Drive, died at 5:08 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road.

Gail H. Udelhofen

Mrs. Joseph (Gail H.) Udelhofen, 103, of ManorCare Health Services, formerly of 723 Edith St., died at 3:40 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Chapel services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday. Arrangements are pending.

Flossie M. Hoffman

LANCASTER, Wis. - Flossie M. Hoffman, 90, of Lancaster, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at the Lancaster Care Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Clement's Catholic Church, Lancaster, with Monsignor Daniel Ganshert officiating. Burial will be in St. Clement's Cemetery , rural Lancaster. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Schwartz Funeral Home, Lancaster.

Mrs. Hoffman worked at the former Lancaster Memorial Hospital and at the former Wright Hotel. She later volunteered at the Grant County Thrift Shop.

She was born on April 28, 1913, in Ellenboro Township, daughter of John and Matilda (Stitzer) Davies.

She married Hubert Flesch in 1932; he preceded her in death in 1950. In 1952, she married Ralph Hoffman; he preceded her in death in 1987.

Surviving are a son, Larry (Carol) Flesch, of St. Charles, Ill.; a daughter, Dolores (Joseph) Curley, of Antigo; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lennice (Robert) Roesch, of Lancaster; a brother-in-law, Harlan Gehrke, of Platteville; a sister-in-law, Rowena Davies, of Fennimore; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by two sons, Gerald and Thomas Flesch; a great-grandson, Andrew Menting; five brothers, Pirl, John, George, Ray and Eldon Davies; and four sisters, Elizabeth Straka, Ruth Duncan, Matilda Martin and Helen Gehrke.

Mildred E. Kunkel Pennekamp

KIELER, Wis. - Mildred E. Kunkel Pennekamp, 88, of the Sun Valley Apartments, Dickeyville, formerly of Kieler, died at 6:50 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Orchard Manor, Lancaster.

Arrangements are pending at Haudenshield Funeral Home, Kieler.

Raliegh Herrald Sr.

Raliegh Herrald Sr., 78, of 2005 Ogilby Road, formerly of Davis Junction, Ill., died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Dubuque. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery , Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by the Marine Corps League and the Tri-State Vietnam Veterans Association. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

He was born on Feb. 18, 1925, in Numa, Iowa, son of John and Sara Jane (Bond) Herrald. He married Genevieve Thompson on Aug. 4, 1946, in Chariton, Iowa; she passed away on June 9, 1997.

Raliegh was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in Okinawa and Korea. He received the American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with two bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a bronze star, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Raliegh was a journeyman plumber who moved to Dubuque in 1963, and then moved to Davis Junction in 1980. For the past three years, Raliegh had resided with his daughter, Linda Cole, in Dubuque.

He enjoyed spending the winter months in Texas, where he flew stunt kites on the beach. Watching the Chicago White Sox and playing pinochle were a few of Raliegh's favorite pastimes.

He was a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 66.

Surviving are his children, Raliegh (Mary) Herrald Jr., Linda (Michael) Cole and Michael Herrald, all of Dubuque, Lary (Nancy) Herrald of Oregon, Ill., and Lona (Donald) Steuer, of San Diego; 12 grandchildren, Beth (Scott) Putnam, Dave (Kris) Herrald, Chris (Jolyne Dress) Herrald, Jon (Stacy Kalb) Cole, Joel Cole, Meggan (Kevin) Johnston, Abbey (Stephen) Peterson, Wade Herrald, Ben Steuer, Sara (Tim) Bushman, Katie Steuer and Nicholas Herrald; seven great-grandchildren, Jordan and Logan Steuer, Bailey, Audrey and Ellen Herrald, Tristan Cole and Mitchell Bushman; and a sister, Francis (Delbert) Elder, of Richland, Wash.

He also was preceded in death by two brothers, his twin, Rolland, and Roy; and two sisters, Velma and Ida.

A Raliegh Herrald Sr. Memorial Fund has been established.

Sister Mary Kevin Gallagher, BVM

Sister Mary Kevin Gallagher, BVM, 76, of Marian Hall, 1050 Carmel Drive, Dubuque, died at 2:43 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at Marian Hall.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Motherhouse Chapel, 1150 Carmel Drive. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Mount Carmel Motherhouse, where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. The Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on June 1, 1926, in Chicago, daughter of James and Ellen (Boyle) Gallagher.

She made her first profession of religious vows on March 19, 1946, and her final profession on Aug. 15, 1951.

For the first 22 years of her ministry, Sister was an educator, primarily in high school English. Among her teaching assignments was St. Joseph Academy, Dubuque. She also taught in Chicago and Rock Island, Ill.; Clinton and Davenport, Iowa; Memphis, Tenn.; and Seattle, Wash.

She was the first female chancellor in the Archdiocese of Dubuque, appointed by the former archbishop, Daniel Kucera, OSB; she served as his "chief of staff" for seven years, from 1987 to 1994. Previous to that, Sister Mary Kevin was in parish ministry at St. Raphael's Cathedral, Dubuque, from 1981 to 1987, when Monsignor Jack Dalton was rector.

She also was a first-vice-president of the BVM congregation from 1972 to 1976; secretary general of the BVM congregation from 1976 to 1980; and congregational archivist.

Sister Mary Kevin also served as president of the BVM Heritage Society and as editor of SALT magazine.

Surviving are a sister, Susan Rogers, of Crystal Lake, Ill.; a brother, Patrick Gallagher, of O'Fallon, Mo.; and nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given to the Sisters of Charity, BVM Retirement Fund.

Thomas G. Fluhr

EAST DUBUQUE, Ill. - Thomas G. "Tom" Fluhr, 71, of 645 Clinton St., East Dubuque, died at 12:06 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Dubuque. Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery , where military rites will be accorded by members of the East Dubuque American Legion Post 787. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home, 1185 Route 35 North, East Dubuque, where there will be the parish scripture service at 5 p.m., and where the members of the East Dubuque Volunteer Fire Department will meet at 6 p.m.

Mr. Fluhr was born on Sept. 21, 1930, in East Dubuque, son of Joseph and Anne (Sendt) Fluhr. He married Mary Rosemeyer on July 9, 1953, at St. Mary's Church; she died on Sept. 9, 1980.

Tom will be remembered by each member of his family with both affection and gratitude for the unique role he played in each of their lives. He was a devoted son, husband, father and grandfather.

He shared a unique relationship with his two brothers and his many nephews. Hunting and fishing companions, they also served each other as perfect foils for the frequent practical jokes they managed to contrive.

Tom was a lifelong resident of East Dubuque, and it would be his lot to serve his community with both dedication and devotion. He was elected to the city council in 1965, and served until 1983. In 1983, he was elected mayor and filled that position until 1994.

During his tenure as mayor, in cooperation with his city council, he was instrumental in restructuring Sinsinawa Avenue., Montgomery Avenue., and the Sixth St. Levee Road. During the flood crisis of 1993, he worked closely with FEMA and established the Flood Task Force.

Tom gave generously of his time doing volunteer work for the city. He was a retired member of the East Dubuque Volunteer Fire Department, East Dubuque Business and Tourism Council and the East Dubuque Area Economic Development Corp.

A veteran, he served in the Army in the tank corps with service in Germany in 1950. He was a member of the American Legion Post 787.

Tom went to East Dubuque High School and participated in all of their athletics. St. Mary's School and Church provided the foundation for his religious beliefs. He was a lifelong member and served as an usher for his parish.

A skilled craftsman, Tom was a self-employed plasterer and filled the office of past Business Agent for Plaster Local No. 145.

An avid and skilled gardener, his garden was a source of pride for him and he generously shared his expertise with fellow gardeners. He had a lengthy love of both fishing and hunting. He had few peers when it came to the specialized skills of morel hunting. The outdoors is where Tom found himself most at home.

Noted for both his strong mind and determination, Tom fought the good fight during his final illness. His is a well-earned rest.

Surviving are a daughter, Christina (Bill) Flesch, and a son, Timothy R. Fluhr, both of East Dubuque; five grandchildren, Melissa, Maureen, Melanie and Ryan Flesch and Nick Fluhr; two brothers, Ken (Mary) Fluhr and Dave (Bonnie) Fluhr, both of East Dubuque; a sister, Joanne (Dallas) Belken, of East Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Daniel in infancy.

A sincere thank-you to the Galena Adult Day Care, Tri-State Dialysis, The Finley Hospital, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, physicians, nurses and staff for the wonderful care given to Tom.
