Gilda Arlene Rutter, 80, of Kingston, Iowa, died at 5:37 a.m. Monday, April 9, 2007, at Great River Medical Center.

Born April 16, 1926 in Tama Township, Des Moines County, Iowa, she was the daughter of Walter and Esther Laue Kerr. On September 23, 1946, she married Emmett Rutter in Burlington, Iowa. He died March 14, 1994.

Mrs. Rutter was a homemaker and helped her husband on their family farm. She was a member of Kingston United Methodist Church and Ladies in Stitches.

Survivors include one daughter, Hillis Rutter of Kingston; two grandchildren; one sister, Joyce McDowell of California; and nieces and nephews.

Her husband; son, Michael Rutter; parents; and one brother, Clayton Kerr preceded her in death.

Danielle "Dani" Ann Sartorius

October 1, 1984 - July 20, 2006

Danielle “Dani” Ann Sartorius, 21 of Burlington died Thursday, July 20, 2006, at her home.

Born October 1, 1984 in New York City, New York, she was the daughter of Michael Sartorius and Kimberly Keever Miller.

Danielle was a 2004 graduate of Burlington High School. She was a member of Burlington Baptist Church.

Danielle worked for the Area Education Agency as an aide and was a volunteer at BHS. She was active in her church as a Sunday School Teacher, in the nursery, Vacation Bible School, Bible drills and Nursing Home Ministry. She loved crafts, crossword puzzles, walking, sports, helping people, and working with the elderly. She was a Blackhawk fan.

Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Kim and Robert Miller of Burlington; her father and stepmother, Michael and Bernadette Sartorius of Flower Mound, Texas; brother, Klayton Miller at home; sister, Alexia Miller at home; and paternal grandparents Jim and Betty White of Burlington.

Her maternal grandparents, Margery and Donald Keever, and paternal grandfather, Richard Sartorius preceded her death.

Memorials have been established for Burlington Baptist Church, her brother and sister’s education, and Great River Hospice.

Marian Catherine Schamper
July 19, 1916 - November 19, 2006

Ms. Marian Catherine Schamper, 90, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 6:50 AM Sunday, November 19, 2006 at Rosebush Gardens Health Center, Burlington.

Born July 19, 1916 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Edward P. and Ann Peiffer Schamper.

Ms. Schamper graduated from St. Paul’s High School and the College of Commerce in Burlington. She was a cashier, bookkeeper, personnel manager, buyer and assistant manager for Kresge Company. Later she worked for K Mart as personnel manager, retiring at age 75. She retired after 50 years of employment. She also worked in Monmouth and Keokuk hiring and training when those stores were built.

She was a member of SS John and Paul Catholic Church in Burlington. She was a painter and very artistic, enjoyed calligraphy and made the invitations for the new Great River Medical Center. She volunteered doing taxes, RSVP, at Burlington Medical Center and Great River Medical Center until she was 87 years of age. She received the Laubach Award from governor Terry Brandstad.

Survivors include her sister Marjorie Schieffer of Burlington; and several cousins.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Brianna Jo Schappaugh

Brianna Jo Schappaugh, born still, of Burlington died on Monday, December 12, 2005.

Born December 12, 2005 she was the daughter of Amanda Jackson and Jason Schappaugh.

Survivors include her parents of Burlington; maternal grandmother Belinda Hill of West Burlington; maternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, Richard and Lisa Jackson of Jacksonville, Ill.; paternal stepgrandfather and grandmother, Jim and Brenda Smith of Burlington; paternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, Kirk and Tammy Schappaugh of Des Moines; maternal great grandparents, Everett and Fay Fry of West Burlington; paternal great grandmother, Sharon Allen of Eaton, Ohio; paternal great grandparents, Bob and Joyce Schappaugh of Burlington; one brother, Rusty Cavallo; two sisters, Desiree Jackson and Angel Cavallo; aunts, uncles and cousins.

June 3, 1919 - April 5, 2006

Daniel Scheideman, 86, of rural Burlington died at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at his residence.

Born June 3, 1919 in McCook, Nebraska, he was the son of Conrad John and Margaret Prisendorf Scheideman. On July 24, 1940 he married Beulah Maybelle Wilson in Burlington. She died February 11, 1995. On August 10, 1996 he married Frances Louise Gruenjes Huffman in Burlington.

He was a 1937 graduate of Burlington High School and worked as a switchman for Chicago, Burlington Quincy and Burlington Northern Railways for 40 years retiring in 1979.

Mr. Scheideman was a member of First United Methodist Church and attended Sunnyside Avenue Baptist Church. He was a member of Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen for many years and was an avid golfer and bowler.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Scheideman of Burlington; one daughter, Barbara Ann Webb of Burlington; two stepsons, Don Huffman of Middletown and Jeff Huffman of Burlington; one stepdaughter, Mary Terhune of Augusta; two grandchildren, Damon Webb, currently serving in Iraq and Rebecca Anderson of Platteville, Wisconsin; five step grandchildren; four great grandchildren; several step great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and four nieces and nephews.

His first wife, parents, one brother, and four sisters preceded him in death.

Memorials have been established for First United Methodist Church and Sunnyside Avenue Baptist Church.

John "Jake" Albert Schieffer
February 15, 1923 - December 21, 2006

John “Jake” Albert Schieffer, 83, of Burlington, Iowa died at 3:40 a.m. Thursday, December 21, 2006, at Great River Medical Center – Klein Center.

Born February 15, 1923 in Burlington, he was the son of Siegfried and Marie Schaffer Schieffer. On August 24, 1947 he married Shirley Hendrickson in Burlington.

Mr. Schieffer graduated Burlington High School and attended the University of Iowa for one semester before enlisting in the Army Air Corps serving in Italy during World War II.

Mr. Schieffer was a restaurant owner and a candy maker. Jake and his brother Bill owned and operated Jake’s Place, the Bright Spot, KarmelKorn and Candy Shop and M&M Drive In, which later became the Harrison House at Main and Harrison. After retirement, Jake and his wife Shirley opened Swiss Farms Candy Shoppe on Summer St.

He was a member of SS John and Paul Catholic Church and National Restaurant Association. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, traveled all of Wisconsin to sample the different cheeses, and volunteered for seven years serving meals at Klein Center.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Schieffer of Burlington; two sons, Richard Schieffer of Gladstone, Illinois and Ron (Kay) Schieffer of West Branch, Iowa; two daughters, Linda (Tom) Greene of Burlington and Cindy (Jack) Atteberry of Burlington; nine grandchildren, Michelle Koller, Erika Blaylock, Nicole and Jon Greene, Katie and Elizabeth Schieffer and Jaron, Tyler and Austin Atteberry; one great granddaughter, Ella Blaylock; one brother, Robert (Libby) Schieffer of Keokuk; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents and one brother, William Schieffer, preceded him in death.

William "Bill" Schieffer
July 13, 1918 - April 16, 2006

-Mass of Christian Burial: Thursday, April 18th, 2:00 PM in St. John's Catholic Church Reverend William Wiegand will be the celebrant. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music.
-Interment: Aspen Grove Cemetery , Burlington, Iowa The Veterans Honor Guard of VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League and the AMVETS Post 29 will conduct Military Rites.

William “Bill” Schieffer, 87, who died Sunday, April 16, 2006, at Great River Medical Center’s – Klein Center.

Born July 13, 1918 in Burlington, he was the son of Siegfried and Marie Schaffer Schieffer. On December 26, 1969 he married Marjorie Schamper In St. John’s Catholic Church.

Mr. Schieffer attended St. John’s school through ninth grade, was a graduate of Burlington High School, attended Burlington Junior College for one year then transferred to Iowa State University in Ames. He joined the Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (R.O.T.C.) and joined the Army on January 12, 1942. He was a Captain in the Army Air Corps.

After World War II, he and his brother Jake borrowed money and purchased M & M Drive Inn on the corner of Harrison and Main Streets where the waitresses wore roller skates. They later hired an architect to design a new restaurant, which became the Harrison House Restaurant and operated until 1985.

Mr. Schieffer loved to read magazines like Smithsonian, National Geographic and U.S. News and World Report. He loved to travel to Milwaukee to experience the German atmosphere of restaurants, meats and cheese. Another favorite relaxation spot was Tan-Tar-A. He and his wife enjoyed vacations in San Francisco, New Orleans and many other places.

Mr. Schieffer enjoyed raising Beagles. His brother Bob and he often took Scout, Trippett, Flossie and Lady to Field Trials for competition. He also loved photography and flowers.

He was a member of SS John and Paul Catholic Church, Troop 3 of Boy Scouts, Order of the Arrow, and Keenagers.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Schieffer of Burlington; two brothers, John “Jake” (Shirley) Schieffer of Burlington and Robert “Bob” (Lib) Schieffer of Keokuk; sister-in-law, Marian Schamper; six nephews; and six nieces.

Friends may call Wednesday, April 19th, in Lunning Chapel from noon until 5:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Thursday in St. John’s Catholic Church.

Memorials have been established for SS John and Paul Catholic Church and Great River Medical Center’s – Klein Center.
