Virgil Houdek

Virgil E. Houdek, 80, 201 9th Ave., Charles City, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in Charles City, with Rev. Msgr. Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Charles City with Military Rites.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., today, Wednesday, June 19, 2002, with a Vigil Scripture Wake Service at 7 p.m. at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Visitation will continue Thursday, June 20, one hour prior to services at the church.

Virgil was born Nov. 9, 1921, in Fort Atkinson. He is the son of Catherine and Thomas Houdek. He was baptized on Nov. 13, 1921, at St. John's Nepomurene Church in Fort Atkinson. He attended school and completed the seventh grade, prior to service he worked as a Caterpillar tractor driver in Protivin.

Virgil entered service at Camp Dodge, for the 34th Infantry. He served in the U.S. Army from Sept. 24, 1942, to Sept. 13, 1945, where he was honorably discharged. He was an Infantry Heavy Machine Gunner, and an Ammunition Bearer. During WWII he served in the Philippines as parts of the seven beach landings some of which included Guam, Laette, Potton, New Guinea, and Carigidor. He was wounded in the Asiatic Pacific Theater on Feb. 17, 1945. Virgil was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one star, Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge and the Bronze Service Arrowhead.

He married Violet Vine, she had passed away in 1950, and they had two children. In 1951 he married Dorothy Eberling and divorced in 1959, where they had five children. He married Evelyn M. Logan on Jan. 7, 1963, in Austin, Minn.

He had worked in the foundry at Oliver Tractors for 29 years and retired in 1977. He was a member of the American Rifle Association. Virgil enjoyed outings, and loved spending time with his children. He also enjoyed fishing, and hunting, and working on vehicles.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; nine sons, Steven and Judy Houdek, of Anamos; John and Teri Houdek, of Paris, Texas; Tom and Diane Houdek, of Charles City; David and Kathy Logan, of Vidalia, Ga.; Virgil Houdek Jr., of Waterloo; James and Inez Houdek, Eugene Houdek, of Charles City; Jeffrey Houdek and Crystal Blanchard, of Nora Springs; and Mike Houdek, of Charles City; seven daughters: Sandra Paul, of Charles City, Sharon Luckenbaugh, of Texarkana, Texas, Katie and David Baruth, of West Union, Tracy Bohannon, of Charles City, Brenda Houdek, of Waterloo, Lori Fry, and Julie and Jerry Ferch, of Charles City; 25 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and two sisters Marcella Barr, of Calmar, and Doris and Eugene Erbe, of Simi Valley, Calif.; two nephews: Roger Barr, of Mount Pleasant, and Dene Erbe, of Simi Valley, Calif, and one niece Joan Martin, of Calmar.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Violet, a son Rodney DeWayne Houdek, a sister Alys Bitler, and a brother, Adolphe Houdek.

LEO FOXEN

NEW HAVEN-- Leo Foxen, 65, of New Haven, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, suddenly of a cardiac event at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Leo farmed and was employed at White Farm Equipment in Charles City for 33 years. In 1992 Leo started L & M Machine Shop in Riceville, retiring in 1999.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Haven with Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Interment will be at the St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in New Haven with the graveside service by the Osage American Legion Post #278. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage where there will be a Scripture Service at 7 p.m. followed by a Rosary. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the services at the church.

Leo is survived by his wife, Mary Jane, of New Haven, one son: Gene Foxen and his son, Cody, of Emporia, Kan., four daughters: Ann and John Maas and their children, Ben and Pete, of Kasson, Minn.; Joan and Brad Butterfield and their children, Alison, Rhiannon and Sara, of Charles City; Jane Foxen of West Des Moines and Lisa Foxen of Stewartville, Minn. He is also survived by four sisters: Mary Lucena (Don) Eden of Titonka, Alice Wilkens of Nora Springs, Delores (Urban) Hemann of Austin, Minn., and Mary Coleman of Shawnee Mission, Kan., and one brother: Don Foxen of rural Osage.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Francis Foxen and John Robert Foxen.

Gladys L. Trees

GREENE - Funeral Mass for Gladys L. Trees, 81, 606 Maple Street,

Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be today, Tuesday, October 1, 2002, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene where there will be a Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the services at the church.

Gladys LaVonne Latch was born Dec. 22, 1920, in Goodell the daughter of Glen and Florence (Wilkin) Latch and died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, in her home at Greene.

She received her education in the Goodell Public Schools where she graduated in 1938. She was united in marriage to Leslie Duane "Buck" Trees on May 20, 1944, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene. They made their home in Greene and to this union was born three sons. Gladys worked for several businesses in Greene which included the Greene Cafe, Klassi Hardware and Riverside Cafe. In later years she did sewing and seamstress work in her own home.

Gladys and Buck had 44 years together until his death on Aug. 25, 1988. They enjoyed going Trout fishing in Decorah. Gladys enjoyed playing 500 and watching the Atlanta Braves on television.

Living family members include her three sons and their spouses: Alan (Jan) Trees, Doug (Emily) Trees, Bryon (Rosie) Trees; eight grandchildren and their spouses: Eric (Lisa) Trees, Angie (Nate) Siemons, Darin Trees, Chad (Erin) Trees, Brad (Melannie) Trees, Lacie Trees, Nate (Shannon) Trees, Justin (Beth) Trees; six great-grandchildren: Trevor and Taylor Siemons, Brandon Trees, Isaac Trees, Bryce Trees, and Deric Trees; two brothers and their spouses: Clement (Betty) Latch of Rockford, and Gerald (Judy) Latch of Mason City; two sisters-in-law: Helen Latch of Charles City and Dixie Beiner of Waverly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a grandson: Matthew Trees, in infancy, her parents, and two brothers, Gordan Latch who died in infancy and Elroy Latch

Elizabeth Brinkman

NORA SPRINGS - Elizabeth Brinkman, 99, died Monday Jan. 13, 2003 at the Nora Springs Care Center, Nora Springs.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. SE, Mason City, IA.

Arthur H. Turner

ZEARING, IA -Arthur Turner, 87 of Zearing, died Saturday, March 8th, at Colonial Manor in Zearing of complications of a stroke. Services will be held Wednesday, March 12, at 10:00 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church in Zearing, with burial at the local cemetery.

Born in Green Mountain, Iowa, he grew up in the St. Anthony area and farmed near Zearing until retiring in 1979. He served on numerous boards of directors in his church, community, and farm organizations. In addition to his family and friends, Art enjoyed fishing, singing, woodworking and wintering in Arizona.

He is survived by his wife Margaret, a son Ronald of Nevada, 4 daughters, Janet Mahlow of Zearing, Cheryl Doser of Des Moines, Janiece Bergland of Floyd, and Patricia Turner of Anaheim, Calif. He is also survived by two sisters, Vivien Nelson of Clear Lake, and Helen Phares of Cambridge and by 14 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 2 step-sons, and 2 step-daughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Goldie Cerka Turner, one brother and one sister.

Friends may call at the Bethel United Methodist Church in Zearing after 11a.m., Tuesday, March 11, where the family will be present from 5-8 P.M.

Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing is handling the arrangements.

Merrill Johnson

MASON CITY - Merrill L. Johnson, 81, a resident of 1170 Highway 218, Floyd, died Sunday morning, June 17, 2001, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center, East Campus, in Mason City.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, at the Grace United Methodist Church of Floyd. The Rev. Solomon Odoom, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery at Floyd.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 3-9 p.m. Tuesday where the family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church Wednesday one hour prior to the service.

Merrill Leland Johnson was born May 17, 1920, in Floyd County, the son of Ben H. and Anna (Lesch) Johnson. He attended rural schools and graduated from Floyd Consolidated High School in 1938. He farmed with his parents and on Dec. 28, 1948, he and Charline Rucker were married in Floyd County. They farmed near Grafton for three years before moving to their farm north of Floyd.

He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd and the Floyd County Farm Bureau.

Living family members include his wife, Charlene, of rural Floyd; a son, Maurice and his wife, Pam Johnson, of rural Floyd; and two grandsons, Ben and Andy Johnson.

Memorials may be directed to the Grace United Methodist Church elevator fund.

Leila Rodamaker

Leila Rodamaker, 72, of Charles City, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, at the United Methodist Church in Nashua. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City.

Visitation will be held Sunday, Jan. 13, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Chenoweth and Son Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Leile Rodamaker was born March 15, 1929, 1929, in Floyd County to Ralph and Nellie (Thompson) Johnson. She was united in marriage to David Rodamaker on Sept. 22, 1945, in the Methodist Church in Charles City. She was very active in the V.F.W. Women's Auxiliary serving as president of the Ralph Nicholson Post #06792 in Nashua and as District President.

Living family members include her husband, David Rodamaker of Charles City; a son, Duane of Clarksville; a daughter, Sandra Rossi of Royersford, Penn.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers: Vic Johnson of Nashua and Ralph (Jack) Johnson of Charles City; and two sisters: Opal Martin of Greene and Viola Babcock of Corwith.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jesse Johnson; and one sister, Wilma Reinhardt.

Rev. Jerold (Jerry) Zech

Rev. Jerold (Jerry) Robert Zech, 58, of 709 8th Ave, Charles City died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at the Maple Heights Assembly of God, Hwy 218 & Maple Heights Dr. Charles City with the Rev. Ken Hansen. Interment will be held in Riverside Cemetery , Charles City, with military rites provided by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. Visitation will continue at the church one hour to service time.

Jerold was born on May 9, 1943, to Mary (Ross) Holmes and adapted by Clarence Anton and Eleanor (Norman) Zech.

Jerry entered the United States Army in 1960 with a honorable discharge in 1962. The commendations that he received were Sharpshooter and Marksman.

On July 4, 1948, Jerry was united in marriage to Betty Jones at the Maple Heights Assembly of God, Hwy 218 & Maple Heights Dr., Charles City.

Jerry was a man that never saw a stranger, only a friend. He was an outgoing person that enjoyed sharing time with his family and friends whether it was taking trips with his family or traveling in the RV with his best friend Gary. Jerry was a fan of Clint Eastwood and John Wayne western movies.

Jerry was a member of the Maple Heights Assembly of God. He was a devoted man to his bible and helping others find faith. Jerry was a member of the Cowboys for Christ and the DAV.

Jerry will be greatly missed by his wife, Betty of Charles City; eight children: Krista Michelle Merriss and her husband Gary, Keitha Nicolle Fitzgerald and her husband Cory, Kylie Bray, Brenda Huntington, Becky Lynn Shoup and her husband John, Bill Groves, Dennis Walter Groves and his wife Karen, Richard Troy Groves; two sisters, Sharon Kraus and her husband Calvin, Jeanne Staudt and her husband Tim; four brothers, Raymond Ross, David Ross, Steve Williams, Gilbert Williams and his wife Deborah; 13 grandchildren, Christopher Halama, Tyler Marvets, Kayla Zech, Dominick Fitzgerald, Ashley Zech, Shawn Corwell, Krista Sue and Mike Huntington, Amanda, Samantha Groves, Jesse Leroy Parish, Jimi Tyler Parish and Jerichio Dean Parish.

He is preceded in death by his father, Clarence, three stepmothers, a sister, one Grandson, aunts and uncles.

Lois Schulz

Lois A. Schulz, 81, of Glendale, Ariz., passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2002. Lois will be laid to rest at the Riverside Cemetery on Saturday, May 18, 2002 at 11 a.m.

Mary Lynn Stewart

Mary Lynn (Hyers) Stewart died Oct. 7, 2002, at Loyola Hospital in Maywood, Ill. Funeral services for Mary Lynn (Hyers) Stewart will be at 2 p.m. today, Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene with Pastor Phillip Carroll officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.
