June 22, 1922 - November 20, 2006

David Richard “Rich” Schmieg, 84, of Burlington, Iowa died at 3:50 p.m. Monday, November 20, 2006 at Genesis East Medical Center in Davenport, Iowa.

Born June 22, 1922 in Burlington, he was the son of Joseph Charles and Ellen Hamilton Schmieg.

On October 2, 1942, he married Marie Maxine Griffin in Canton, Missouri.

Mr. Schmieg attended St. John’s Elementary School and Horace Mann Jr. High School and was a 1940 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a World War II Army veteran serving from 1942 until 1945. He spent 2 ½ years overseas and fought at the Battle of the Bulge.

He worked in construction and was an electrician, working at the Railroad Shops for ten years, electrical supervisor in St. Joseph, Missouri for two years and then 30 years with Pohren Electric, retiring in 1981.

Mr. Schmieg was of the Catholic faith, was a charter member of V.F.W. Post 9162, member of American Legion Post 52, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 150, and National Association for Amateur Radio Operators. He was an avid amateur radio operator with the call letters WØDRV since 1951 and talked to people all over the world.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Maxine Schmieg of Burlington; three daughters, Tara (Steve) Figert of Burlington, Mary Schmieg of Mt. Pleasant and JoAnne (Tom) Walsh of Burlington; two sons, Richard Lee Schmieg and Ronald Schmieg both of Burlington; 16 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and three step great grandchildren.

His parents; grandson Rick; brother, Charles Schmieg; and sister, Dorothy Boyle preceded him in death.

Randy Lee Schmitz
March 27, 1951 - November 9, 2006

Randy Lee Schmitz, 55, of Choctaw, Oklahoma and formerly of Burlington, Iowa died Thursday, November 9, 2006 at his sister’s residence in Newcastle, Oklahoma.

Born March 27, 1951 in Burlington, he was the son of Floyd Albert, Sr. and Adelaide Violet Pearl Asher Schmitz. On October 20, 2005 he married Lisa Ann Stebbins in Oklahoma City.

Mr. Schmitz worked for Community Action in the Oklahoma City area and as a carpenter for 35 years

His passion was playing his drums, attending concerts, going to amusement parks and traveling. He also loved to cook.

Mr. Schmitz was of the Lutheran faith.

Survivors include his wife, Lisa Ann Schmitz of Choctaw; one son, Jason Mathew Schmitz of Burlington; five grandchildren, Hayle Nicole Schmitz, Jacob Lee Schmitz, Michael Wayne Palmer, Katelin Lynette Palmer and Abbigail Lynn Palmer all of Burlington; one brother, Floyd Albert Schmitz, Jr. of Burlington; one sister, Sarah Ann Goff of Oklahoma; nephew, Landon Thomas Goff and niece, Nickole Adalaide Goff both of Oklahoma; and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.
His parents and one sister, Juanita Mae Garlow, preceded him in death.

James Wayne Schnedler Sr.
September 24, 1940 - July 22, 2006

-Memorial Graveside Service and Inurnment: Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at 3:00 P.M. in Aspen Grove Cemetery . The Rev. Charles Stevens to officiate.
-Inurnment: Aspen Grove Cemetery , Burlington, Iowa
The Veterans Honor Guard of VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52,
Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League and the AMVETS Post 29 will conduct Military Rites.
Friends and Relatives are invited to a cookout to celebrate Jim's life at Linda's house.
Following the graveside service.

James “Jim” Wayne Schnedler, 65, of Burlington, died Saturday, July 22, 2006, in Great River Medical Center.

Born September 24, 1940 in Ottumwa, he was the son of Carrol R. and Henrietta Poisel Schnedler.

He married Linda Kay Charbonneau on May 4, 1962 in Charleston, South Carolina.

He was an Excavating Contractor for 45 years and was Owner and Operator of Schnedler Excavating.

James attended West Burlington schools, and was an electrician and a nine year Navy Veteran serving in the Vietnam War.

In addition to his wife, Linda, he is survived by his children, James Schnedler Jr., and Jason Schnedler both of Burlington; a Grandson Edward Schnedler; two brothers, Dennis Schnedler and Monty Schnedler both of Burlington; and a Sister Judy Funk of Pueblo, CO.

His parents and a son John preceded him in death.

A memorial has been established.

Evelyn K. Schneider
January 11, 1943 - September 6, 2006

Evelyn K. Schneider, 63 of Burlington, Iowa died at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 6, 2006, at her residence.

Born January 11, 1943 in Augusta, Illinois, she was the daughter of Jacob B. and Grace Viola Swan Wood. On August 31, 1963 she married David A. Schneider in Bowen, Illinois.

Mrs. Schneider was a 1961 graduate of Bowen (Illinois) High School. She worked as a medical records clerk for Burlington Medical Center from 1988 until her retirement in 2000. She was of the Methodist faith and was a member of Burlington Golf Club. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, gardening, and potted plants.

Survivors include her husband of 43 years, David A. Schneider of Burlington; one son, Eric Schneider of Burlington; one daughter, Kris Carter of Jasper, Alabama; one grandson, Cole Carter; three brothers, Gene Wood of Bowen, Illinois and Gerald Wood and Robert Wood both of West Point, Illinois; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Juanita L. Schneider
March 21, 1924 - December 28, 2005

Juanita L. Schneider, 81, of Burlington, died at 9:33 p.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at Great River Medical Center’s Klein Center.

Born March 21, 1924 she was the daughter of Milbourn Allen and Maude Ann Colbert Dungan. On November 27, 1947 she married Fred Carl Schneider in Galeburg, Ill. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Schneider was an expediter for J. I. Case Company for 22 years, retiring in 1987.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She also was a member of the Golden Oldies, United Auto Workers, R.S.V.P. and Des Moines County Historian Society.

Survivors include, two sons, John H. Schneider of Pleasant Hill, Orgeon, Robert Schneider of Fort Madison, Ia.,; one daughter, Elizabeth A. Pollitt of Auburn, Washington; nine grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and one brothers, James M. Dungan of Renton, Washington.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, one son Richard M. Schneider, one daughter in law Susan Schneider, and three grandsons, Mark, Jody, and Nathan.

A memorial has been established to Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Burlington Ward Mission Fund.

Alvin "Al" Robert Schneiderman
December 26, 1928 - April 12, 2006

Alvin “Al” Robert Schneiderman, 77, of Burlington died at 5:20 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at Great River Medical Center.

Born December 26, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of Morris and Lillian Katz Schneiderman. On July 11, 1954 he married Evelyn Levine in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She died May 26, 1974. On December 6, 1974 he married Mary Lou Juergens Spear in Danville.

Mr. Schneiderman was a January 1947 graduate of the Manhattan High School of Aviation Trades in New York City. He then entered the Navy and after his discharge, the Army recalled him during the Korean Conflict to design and decorate service clubs in France and Germany. He later worked as operations manager at Lehigh Leopold for 47 years.

Mr. Schneiderman was a fan of John Wayne and watched his movie, “In Harms Way” many times especially enjoying the flying scenes most particularly the USA FPBY-2. He was a Chicago Cubs and Bulls fan, an avid Hawkeye football and basketball fan and enjoyed Big Band Era songs, and puttering in the garage and garden. He worked with carpentry and loved designing and building things. He was a member of Hamilton- Walters American Legion Post 52.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Spear Schneiderman of Burlington; three daughters, Robin Schneiderman of Burlington, Janet (Steve) Holtman of Cedar Rapids, and Julie (Jim) Kniffen of Burlington; three sons, Bart (Suzanne) Schneiderman of West Burlington, Craig (Sue) Spear of Burlington, and Scott (Tina) Spear of Scottsdale, Arizona; thirteen grandchildren, Josh, Jarrod, Janelle, and Adam Schneiderman, Laura Cain and Dan Holtman, Tammy Morris and Emilee Minkalis, Brandon, Trevor and Jenna Kniffen, Natalie and Nathan Spear; five great grandchildren, Wyatt and Steve Cain, Taylor, Blaise, and Brennon Morris.

His first wife and parents preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial to the donor’s choice of charitable organization has been established.

Michael "Mike" Scott Schrader
July 24, 1961 - May 9, 2007

-Family will receive friends: Friday, May 11th, 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM in First United Methodist Church of Mediapolis
-Funeral Service: Saturday, May 12th, at 1:30 PM in the First United Methodist Church of Mediapolis
Pastors John Gaulke and Beth Briggs will officiate
-Interment: North Walker Cemetery , rural Burlington
In lieu of flowers, a special memorial has been established in memory of Mike for a river project
Everyone is invited to a time of fellowship and luncheon at the Shoquoquon Boat Club following the committal services at the cemetery

Michael “Mike” Scott Schrader, 45, of rural Burlington, Iowa, died at 3:20 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at his home on the river after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born July 24, 1961 in Burlington, he was the son of Harry Glenn and Joyce Elaine Walker Schrader.

Mike was a 1979 graduate of Mediapolis High School and later graduated from Southeastern Community College. He previously owned Short Stuff’s in Kingston, Iowa. He formerly worked for Holsteen and Shipley Construction Companies and Zaiser Fabrication. He currently was a heavy equipment operator for Fye Excavating. He worked on the construction of several large projects in the area including, Lock and Dam No. 18 spillway, Methodist Churches in Mediapolis and Sperry, and Burlington Public Library. Mike was a carpenter, farmer, a “Jack of all Trades”, and “Master of All.” His true love was the river and his friends. He enjoyed boating, bonfires by the river and working.

Mike was a member of Kingston United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his parents, Harry and Joyce Schrader of rural Burlington; fiancée, Kris Taylor; one sister, Sheila (Bryon) Keltner of Wapello, Iowa; one brother, Craig (Julie) Schrader of Story City, Iowa; four nieces and nephews, Cole and Allison Schrader and Bryar and Kolby Keltner; and step niece, Savannah (Isaac) Frier.
