Larry Crooks

Larry Crooks, 58, a resident of 2004 Airy Acres Lane, Charles City, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at his residence.

Funeral services for Larry Crooks will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. The Revs. Dennis Niezwaag and David Werges will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and at the church an hour prior to the service on Monday.

Larry Gilbert Crooks was born July 10, 1944, at Charles City, the son of Walter and Hattie (Schmudlach) Crooks. He graduated from New Hampton Community High School in 1962. On April 12, 1969, he was united in marriage to Kathy Berger at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli. Prior to moving to Charles City Larry engaged in various construction and carpentry work in the Tripoli and Waverly areas. In the early 1970's Larry started working at White Farm Equipment Company and it was at that time they moved to Charles City. In 1984 he began working at Allied Construction and continued there to the present time. He was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Larry liked to work and his enjoyment of the outdoors was seen in his gardening, lawn work, hunting, and fishing. Working with his hands found him involved with woodworking. Larry and Kathy enjoyed dancing. He also liked being around his family and friends as they played cards and bingo, many times as the result of a "spur of the moment" phone call.

Living family members include his wife, Kathy of Charles City; two children, Bruce (Wendy) Crooks and their children Karson and Kara of Ionia, and Linda Crooks of Mishawaka, Ind.; his brother, Carl (Shirley) Crooks of Ionia; two sisters, Geraldine Marsrow of Reese, Mich., and Martha Mannetter of Nashua; two brothers-in-law, Harley Bergmann of Tripoli, and Gary (Bev) Berger of Cleveland, Minn.; his mother-in-law, Ida Berger of Nashua; eighteen nieces and nephews; and many great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Anna Mae Bergmann, his brother-in-law, Bill Marsrow, and his father-in-law, Fred Berger.

Mary Ellen Gray

ALGONA - Mary Ellen Gray, 64, died on Friday, June 27, 2003, in the Hospice Unit at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona. Mary's funeral is scheduled for today, July 1, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Algona with Rev. Philip J. Webb officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery , rural Lohrville. An Eastern Star Service was held Monday, June 30, 2003, and was conducted by Algona Chapter #68 OES in Algona.

Mary Ellen Gray was born on November 23, 1938, in Algona, to John and Faye Humphrey Strayer. She attended school in Algona until her sophomore year, when she went to live with her aunt and uncle, Merle and Marjorie Humphrey, in Lohrville, where she graduated from high school. On May 27, 1956, Mary married Melvin Gray at the 1st Christian Church in Lohrville. They moved to Alta in 1962, where they raised their 4 children. After their children graduated, she decided to work outside of the home. Mary worked at the Lamplighter Motel and the nursing home in Storm Lake. The couple moved to Estherville in 1983. Mary worked at Glasslite in Dunnell, Minn. Mary and Melvin moved to Algona in January of 1989. They bought a garden center and Mary added her crafts and ceramics into the business, which she truly enjoyed until she became too ill to work.

Mary enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, reading books, making crafts, and she loved her flower beds nd vegetable garden. She also loved to cook.

Mary was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, where she had been Worthy Matron for 3 different Chapters, most recently Algona Chapter #68. She enjoyed traveling and meeting new friends in the two years that Melvin was a Grand Lodge Officer of Masons of Iowa.

Mary is survived by her husband of 47 years, Melvin, Algona. Also surviving are three sons: Dale Gray and wife, Susan, Jackson, Miss.; Mike Gray and wife, Michell, Hills, Minn; and Craig Gray and wife, "Missy" Michelle, Fayetteville, Ga; 7 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren. Mary is also survived by 2 brothers: John Strayer and wife, Louise, Kissimmee, Fla. and Nathan Strayer and wife, Marian, Klemme; five sisters: Naomi Hutchinson and husband, Gordon, Hardy; Bonnie Reedy and husband, Larry, Ft. Dodge; Doris Sandell and husband, Gary, Garner; Janice Hartman and husband, Merle, Milford; and Denise Latch of Clear Lake; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa Gray; a sister, Nancy Bierstedt; and her parents, John and Faye Strayer.

Loren 'Larry' Luster

Loren (Larry) Luster passed away June 28, 2003. Service will be held today, July 3, 2003, at Crystal Lake Funeral Home on Penn and dowling Ave., in North Minneapolis, Minn., at 1 p.m. with a viewing at noon.

Larry Luster was born 1925 in Iowa.

He is survived by three children, eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren and was preceded in death by his wife Shirley.

Donovan "Whitey" Ruffridge

GREENE - Donovan "Whitey" D. Ruffridge, 74 of 521 North 4th St., Greene, Iowa, died Wednesday evening, July 16, 2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services celebrating Don's life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 19, 2003, at the First Presbyterian Church, 319 Traer St. East in Greene. Final interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery with flag folding honors by Tack Barnett Post #268 of the American Legion.

The Fullerton Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 641-822-3191, is in charge of the arrangements.

Pauline Kolbet

ROCKFORD - Pauline Kolbet, 82, of 2133 210th St., Rockford, died Thursday (July 17, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City.

The Fullerton Hage Funeral Home and Cremation Services, (641) 228-4211, is in charge of the arrangements.

Donna Jean Schlick

Donna Jean Schlick, 72, a resident of 706 South Main Street, Charles City, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services for Donna Schlick will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Temple Baptist Church in Charles City. The Rev. Douglas Deford, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in West Side Cemetery , Marble Rock, at 1 p.m.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and at the church an hour prior to the service on Monday.

Donna Jean Lamb Schlick was born April 5, 1931, in Floyd County, the daughter of Lee and Gayle (Heft) Lamb. She graduated from Marble Rock High School, and on May 10, 1957 she was united in marriage to Alvin D. Schlick at Faith Baptist Church, Marble Rock. Donna worked as a nurses-aid at Cedar Valley Hospital for several years, and also for Home Health Aids. She also worked as a secretary and darkroom worker for Schlick Photography. Donna was a member of Temple Baptist Church, and also was a past President, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Baptist Ladies Group and the Happy Hour Club. Donna was a Foster Grandparent for the second grade at Lincoln Elementary School. She enjoyed crafts and her cats.

Donna is survived and lovingly remembered by her brothers: Carl R. (Norma) Lamb of Estherville, and Marvin L. (Alice) Lamb of Charles City; a step daughter, Marilyn (Mike) Carroll of Shawnee, Kan.; a step son, David (Diane) Schlick of North Liberty; a foster daughter, Alice Embretson of Charles City; a sister-in-law, Velma Schlick of Charles City; several grandchildren, and a foster grandchild, Mark Embretson of Norfolk, Va.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Alvin.

Carol Hutchins

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City for Carol Hutchins, 96, a former resident of 402 Kelly Street, Charles City, who died Sunday, July 20, 2003, at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Michael Johnson

SANTA CRUZ, N.M. - Michael J. Johnson, 58, of Santa Cruz, N. M., formerly of Waterloo, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at his home of natural causes.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 24, 2003, at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Reverend John Hemann officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be in the Calvary Cemetery , also in Elma. Graveside Military Honors will be provided by the Elma American Legion. Friends may call an hour prior to services at the church.

Michael James Johnson was born July 5, 1945, in Eyota, Minn., the son of Edwin and Florence (Rosauer) Johnson. He was a 1964 graduate of Waterloo West High School. After his schooling, he served in the U.S. Navy and the Marine Corps during Vietnam and continued service after Vietnam for 8 years. He was united in marriage to Cindy (Blackwell). The couple had one son, John R. Johnson. The couple later divorced. Michael worked for Analysis, an off-shore drilling company. He worked as a field engineer for Analysis and later known as Schlumberger for 23 years. Later he began working as a security officer at a casino and then went to dealers school and became a card dealer where he had been working for the last four years. He enjoyed prospecting in the mountains of New Mexico, competition shooting with his black powder guns, collecting fossils, pinochle, geology, and was also a championship chess player while in the service.

He is survived by a son, John R. Johnson of Rockport, Texas; a brother, Joe (Nancy) Johnson of Charles City; and a sister Mary Meyers of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pauline Brady

CLEAR LAKE - Pauline Ruth Brady, 62, of 715 Buddy Holly Pl. Apt. #7, Clear Lake, died Sunday, July 20, 2003, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2003, at the New Life Assembly Of God Church, 1960 Gilbert St., in Charles City, with the Rev. Bill Kelly officiating. Interment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery , Mason City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City, and also one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to direct memorials to the Pauline Brady Memorial Fund.

Keith Van Horn

Keith Van Horn, 72, a resident of 1200 Gilbert Street, Charles City, died Monday, July 21, 2003, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services for Keith Van Horn will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Michael Carey will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery , Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service time on Thursday.

Keith Warren Van Horn was born July 13, 1931, in Butler County, the son of Ben and Lola (Woodley) Van Horn. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1949 and attended Iowa State University. Keith served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. On December 30, 1963, he was united in marriage to Helen Scofield. Keith was a design engineer for Oliver/White Farm for 25 years at the Charles City plant. He was then transferred to Coldwater, Ohio, where he continued his engineering career for White Farm under the ownership of Allied Products Corporation. Later he was transferred to Independence, Mo., where he was employed as an engineer at AGCO the successor owner of White Farm retiring in June of 1994 and returning to Charles City. He also owned Keith's Trailer Sales for almost twenty years. Keith was a member of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge. His pastime activities included camping, playing cards, working with the computer, and having coffee with his friends at the Uptown. He looked forward to spending time with his family and took special interest in his grandchildren.

Living family members include his wife, Helen of Charles City; eight children, Jolene (Russ) Godbey of Charles City, John (Denise) Scofield of Denver, Col., Gary (Zen) Van Horn of O'Fallen, Ill., Joy (Tom) Brown of Mason City, Marty (Kim) Van Horn of Fremont, Neb., Janan (Bob) Berstler of Solon, Jayne (Chuck) Hall of Nevada, and Lori (Paul) Wood of Clear Lake; 21 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren; brother, Dean (Ruby) Van Horn of Minneapolis, Minn., and sister, Carol Hartman of Vancouver, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Lloyd Van Horn, and a sister Marlys Leaman.

Marie Cordes

WATERLOO - Marie M. Cordes, 94, of Waterloo and formerly of Charles City, died Thursday morning, July 24, 2003, at the Bickford Cottages in Cedar Falls of natural causes.

Funeral services were held in Waterloo on Saturday, July 26, with burial in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Readlyn, Iowa. The Kaiser Corson Funeral Home in Denver, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.

Marian M. Zwanziger

NASHUA - Marian M. Zwanziger, 82, of Nashua, passed away Thursday morning, July 24, 2003, at the New Hampton Care Center in New Hampton of a long illness.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., today, Monday, July 28, 2003, at the United Methodist Church in Nashua with burial in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. Visitation was Sunday, July 27, 2003, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the church today.

She is survived by her husband, Donald; one son, Leonard (Duenda) Zwanziger of Rocky Mount, N.C.; one son-in-law, Robert Waidelich of Camdenton, Mo.; a foster son, Conrad "Red" (Roberta) Crist of Golden, Col.; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Merwin (Betty) Richards of San Marcos, Texas; three sisters, Margaret Alene Moine of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; Betty (Clinton) Richards of Charles City; and Marjorie (Marvin 'Bud') Strike of Waukon.

Marian was preceded in death by two daughters: Janet Zwanziger and Donna Waidelich, one great-grandson, Grant Whipple; her parents; four brothers: Clyde, Rual, Beryl and Roger Richards and one sister, Joyce Swinton.

Marian was born November 2, 1920, in Bremer County, Iowa, the daughter of George and Jessie (Shadbolt) Richards. She attended rural grade school in Bremer and Chickasaw County and graduated from Nashua High School in 1938. She was united in marriage to Donald Zwanziger on March 20, 1941 at the Methodist Parsonage in Nashua. Marian was a rural school teacher in Butler and Chickasaw County and manager of the hot lunch program at the Nashua Public School for several years. She and her husband also owned and operated Don's Ranch House and the Dairy Sweet in Nashua.

Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua is in charge of arrangements.

Herbert F. Huck, 105, of Independence, formerly of Jesup, IA, died on Thursday, February 5, 2004, at the West Village Care Center in Independence.

Roy D. “Mac” McAtee, age 55, of rural Riverside, IA, died suddenly, Wednesday, January 28, 2004, of an apparent heart attack at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
