Ralph T. Kraus

JESUP – Ralph T. Kraus, 85 years old of Jesup, IA, died Friday, March 17, 2006, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, IA, following a short illness.

Mr. Kraus is survived by his wife Margaret; four sons, Eugene (Rachel) Kraus of Davenport, James (Mona) Kraus of Rock Island, IL, Duane (Julie) Kraus of Jesup, and Ralph (Karla) Kraus, Jr. of Waterloo; three daughters, Janet Sivertson of Keosauqua, Joyce Marie (Robert) Mellish of New York City, NY, and Marlene Hegg of Bettendorf; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, March 21, 2006, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, with Rev. Donald R. Bruggeman as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Athanasius Catholic Cemetery , Jesup.

Memorials will be directed to St. Athanasius Catholic Church in Jesup, and to Camp Courageous of Iowa in Monticello.

White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, was in charge of the arrangements.

Christian (Chrissy) Eck

Christian (Chrissy) Eck, of Grand Junction, CO, formerly of Jesup, Iowa, died at her home on February 28, 2006, of natural causes.

Chrissy is survived by daughters, Linda (William) Kamby of Grand Junction, CO, Donna (Gary) Harting of La Porte City, and Kimberly Burrill of Granby, CO; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, LaValle; her parents; one brother; one sister; and one grandson.

Donald E. Gates

JESUP - Donald E. Gates, 75 years old of Jesup, IA, died Tuesday, February 28, 2006, at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, IA, following a short illness.

Donald is survived by his wife, Vivian, of Jesup; four daughters, Peggy (Thomas) Short, Beverly (John) Tuve of Parkersburg, Juanita (Rodney) Eliasen of Cedar Falls, and Cheryl (David) Mills of Portage, MI; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer (Bruce) Kinner, Andrea Short, Jeff Short, Daniel Short, Nicole Tuve, Dawn Tuve, Stanley Tuve, Amanda Eliasen, Melissa Eliasen, Amy (Joshua) Hamilton, April Mills, Andrew Mills; two great-grandchildren, Randall Kinner and Alexander Hamilton; and one sister, Anna Mae (Maurice “Tex”) Pentecost of Independence.

Funeral services were held 10:30 AM Saturday, March 4, 2006, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, with Fr. Donald R. Bruggeman officiating. Burial at Mt. Hope Cemetery , Independence.

Memorials will be directed to St. Athanasius Catholic Church in Jesup and Mended Hearts in Waterloo.

White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, was in charge of the arrangements.

Cyrus R. Hopkins

Brandon – Cyrus R. Hopkins, 68, of Brandon, Iowa died Tuesday morning, February 28, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa following a sudden illness.
He is survived by his wife, Annette Hopkins, Brandon; five sons, Mark (Cindy), Andy (Janette), and Carl Hopkins, all of Brandon, Wayne (Lisa) Hopkins, Mt. Auburn, IA., and Matt (Theresa) Hopkins, Rowley; three daughters, Teresa (Michael) Rowley, Wonewoc, WI., Donna (Kevin) Smith, Sequin, TX., and Emily (Joshua) Martin, Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren; four brothers, Floyd Hopkins, of Waterloo, Chuck Hopkins, of Mexico, Butch Hopkins, Flagstaff, AZ, and Bill Hopkins, of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Louise Yoder, of Rowley, and Susan Bacon of Iraq.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM Friday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, with Rev. Aloysius J. Vorwald officiating. Burial will be in the Brandon Cemetery , Brandon, Iowa.

Friends may call from 4-8 PM Thursday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, with a rosary at 4 PM and a wake service at 7 PM.

William Pauley, Jr

William Pauley, Jr., 80, of Park Rapids, MN., and formerly of the Brandon, Iowa area, Thursday, April 12, 2007 at the RTA Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Casa Grande, AZ.

William was born on January 9, 1927 in Vinton, Iowa the son of William D. and Cecelie J. (McAtee) Pauley, Sr. He was a 1944 graduate of the Brandon High School, Brandon, IA., He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946. Following his discharge he attended Gates Business College in Waterloo, Iowa until 1948. In 1968 he was united into marriage to Marcella Lamb, and in 1972 the family moved to Park Rapids, MN. They operated the Hoosier Beach Resort until 1992. William was the business manager of the Dakota Medical Clinic from 1972 until their retirement 1989, at which time they started wintering in Casa Grande, AZ. Marcella died in 1999, and in 2002 he was united into marriage to Evelyn Parks.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn Pauley, Park Rapids, MN, seven step-children; Larry Lamb, Davenport, IA., Susan Burley, Walker, MN., Nancy Hicks, Fargo, ND., Steve Lamb, Rock Island, IL., Ron Parks, Evanston, WY., Linda Harris, Des Moines, IA., and Gregory Parks, LaPorte City, IA. Twelve grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren, and a sister Vaunda Kress, Independence, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Cecele (McAtee) Pauley, Sr., and his wife Marcella (Lamb) Pauley.

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Friday, April 20, 2007 at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA., with Rev. Harold Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Brandon Cemetery , Brandon, IA. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 P.M., Friday, April 27, 2007 at the Riverside United Methodist Church in Park Rapids, Minnesota.

Louis J. Zieser

Louis J. Zieser, 79, of Independence, Iowa died Tuesday morning, April 24, 2007 at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence following a short illness.

Louis was born on August 26, 1927 near Walker, Iowa the son of Joseph F. and Martha E. (Haxmeier) Zieser. He was a 1946 graduate of the East Buchanan High School in Winthrop, Iowa, and was united into marriage to Marjorie M. Shannon on January 18, 1954. The couple resided in Independence where Louis was a carpenter until his retirement in 2002.

Louis was an avid gardener, who enjoyed playing cards and pool with his friends, flea markets, polka music, and the familyÂ’s pets. He was a loving and devout husband, father and grandfather, and a great friend who will be missed by all.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, four children; Dolores “Dee” (Greg) Weber, Jesup, IA., Daniel (Sue) Zieser, Hazelton, IA. Denise Lellig and Diana “Di” Zieser, both of Independence, IA., eight grandchildren: Heather Andrews, Angela Lellig, Curtis Lellig, Jennifer Lellig, Dustin Zieser, Eric Zieser, James Zieser, and Nicholas Zieser, two great grandchildren, six brothers; Jack Zieser, Ryan, IA., Kenny Zieser, Coggon, IA, James Zieser, Marion, IA, Martin Zieser, Marion, IA, Phillip Zieser, Ryan, IA, and Bill Zieser, Leland, IA, six sisters; Sr. Mary Dolores Zieser, Hopkins, MN, Sr. Mary Josita Zieser, Algona, IA, Rosalyn Shannon, Unity, Wisc., Kathleen Callan, Manchester, IA, Janice Hildebrand, Marion, IA, and Patricia Cook, Manchester, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Martha Zieser, a grandson Drew Allen Lellig, and two brothers; Howard and Joseph Zieser.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday at St. JohnÂ’s Catholic Church, Independence, IA., with Rev. Aloysius J. Vorwald officiating. Burial will be in the St. JohnÂ’s Catholic Cemetery in Independence with his grandchildren serving as casket bearers. Friends may call from 2 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence where a rosary will be recited at 3 P.M. and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 P.M. Wednesday.

Memorials may be directed to St. JohnÂ’s Catholic Church, 209 5th Ave. NE; Independence, IA. or to the Cedar Valley Hospice, 801 1st St. E.; Independence, IA.

Catharine C. Callaghan

Catharine C. Callaghan, 84, of Independence, Iowa died Friday, May 4, 2007 at the West village Care Center in Independence following a long illness.

Catharine was born on November 2, 1922 in Bellevue, Iowa the daughter of Bernard F. and Florence M. (Rolling) Callaghan. She graduated and received her RN degree from the St. MaryÂ’s School of Nursing, Rochester, MN, and later became a Certified Nurse Anesthetist. She was employed with the Peoples Memorial Hospital in Independence until her retirement in 1987.

She is survived by two brothers; John and Thomas Callaghan both of Bellevue, IA., and two sisters; Rosemary Brizzolara, Little Rock, AK., and Jeanne Joetz, St. Paul, MN

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother James Callaghan and a sister Joanne Felderman.

A Memorial Mass will be said at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at St. JohnÂ’s Catholic Church in Independence, Iowa with Rev. Aloysius J. Vorwald officiating. Inurnment will be held at 2:30 P.M. Wednesday at St. JosephÂ’s Catholic Cemetery , Bellevue, IA., with Rev. Stephen Meyer officiating. The family will receive friends from 9 A.M. till services Wednesday at the church. The Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, IA., is in charge of arrangements.

John T. Ham

John T. Ham, 88, of Independence, Iowa died Tuesday morning, May 8, 2007 at Mercy Hospital in Oelwein, Iowa following a short illness.

John was born on May 19, 1918 near Delhi, Iowa the son of Ross T. and Mabel L. (Cole) Ham. He was a 1935 graduate of the Independence High School, and was united into marriage to Maxine P. Dudley on December 7, 1940 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On March 31, 1944 John enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving during WW II until his discharge on October 18, 1945 at which time he returned to the Independence area and began farming. He farmed in the Walker and Quasqueton, IA, area prior to moving to a farm north of Independence in 1963. John recently made available to Buchanan County Conservation Board “The Ham Marsh” consisting of 54 acres of his farm to be maintained as a public nature area for all to enjoy.

John was a member of the Masonic Lodge #87, holding all chairs, the York Rite, the White Shrine of Jerusalem, The Independence Saddle Club, and was one of the founding members of the Shriners Hillbillies.

He enjoyed working on cars, machinery, and tractors, caring for his horse Penelope and her foals, and hunting, including trips to Montana and Wyoming.

He is survived by his wife Maxine, a daughter; Susan Kauten, Oelwein, IA., five sons; Dennis (Karen) Ham, Center Point, IA., Roger (Vickie) Ham, Willits, CA, David (Carol) Ham, Pleasanton, CA., Gary (Kathie) Ham, Hiawatha, IA., and Jeffery (Sue Anna) Ham, Springville, IA., eighteen grandchildren and twenty nine great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son John T. Ham, Jr., and two sisters; Edith Megonigle and Ethel Hagedorn.

Graveside Memorial Services, with Veterans Flag Presentation will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 18, 2007 at the Oakwood Cemetery , Independence, IA. The family will reveive friends from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. Thursday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence where a Masonic Memorial Service will be held at 7 P.M. followed by an Eastern Star Service.

Art Polen

Art Polen, 95, of Independence, Iowa died Wednesday afternoon, May 9, 2007 at the Buchanan County Health Center Long Term Care Center following a short illness.

Art was born on June 28, 1911 in Independence, Iowa the son of Charles and Julia (Gritton) Polen. He was a 1929 graduate of the Independence High School, and was united into marriage to Arlene Lenz on September 27, 1941. The couple made their home in Independence where Art was employed with the Independence Produce Company for many years prior to working as a carpenter with Luther Morton Construction and Modcomp Homes prior to his retirement in 1979.

Art enjoyed almost anything to do with being out of doors, especially hunting, fishing, ice skating, and motor cycles.

Surviving are nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Arlene in 1993, a sister Lois Fairchild, and two half brothers; Allie and Lowell Polen.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held at 10 A.M. Saturday, May 12, 2007 at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence with Rev. Tom Jones officiating. There will be no visitation.

Maxine (Dudley) Ham

Maxine (Dudley) Ham, 85, of Independence, Iowa died Friday evening, May 18, 2007 at Mercy Hospital in Oelwein, Iowa following a short illness.

Maxine was born on January 6, 1922 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the daughter of Lowell A. and Alma L. (Price) Dudley. She graduated from the Wilson High School in Cedar Rapids. and was united into marriage to John T. Ham on December 7, 1940 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Walker and Quasqueton, IA, area prior to moving to a farm north of Independence in 1963. Maxine and John recently made available to the Buchanan County Conservation Board “The Ham Marsh” consisting of 54 acres of their farm to be maintained as a public nature area for all to enjoy.

Maxine was a member of the Eastern Star #278, and the White Shrine of Jerusalem. She was a former member of the Kings Daughters and Sons, and theembroidery Club.

Maxine was a wonderful and loving mother who loved to entertain and have dinner parties. She loved to sing and dance and reading was always a passion for her. She was a great seamstress, and always had a large garden and beautiful flowers.

She is survived by a daughter; Susan Kauten, Oelwein, IA., five sons; Dennis (Karen) Ham, Center Point, IA., Roger (Vicki) Ham, Willits, CA, David (Carol) Ham, Pleasanton, CA., Gary (Kathie) Ham, Hiawatha, IA., and Jeffery (Sue Anne) Ham, Springville, IA., eighteen grandchildren and thirty great grandchildren, one sister; Maribelle Benesh, Cedar Rapids, IA., and three brothers; Quentin Dudley, Cedar Rapids, IA., Llyburn Dudley and Kirk Dudley, both of Chariton, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John on May 8, 2007, a son John T. Ham, jr., and two sisters; LaVonna Kress and Callie Olsen, and three brothers; Rudolph, Leland, and Elmer Dudley.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at the Oakwood Cemetery , Independence, IA. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Monday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence where an Eastern Star Service will be held at 7 P.M.

Norma Jean (Adams) Randall

Independence– Norma J. (Adams) Randall, 75, of Independence, Iowa died Saturday, May 19, 2007 at the West Village Care in Independence following a long illness.

Norma was born October 18, 1931 in Manchester, Iowa the daughter of Lester and Vanita (Hohmann) Minkler. She attended the country school. She was united into marriage to Leo “Bunk” Haas, Willard Adams and David Randall. Norma was a homemaker who enjoyed her flowers and gardening. She loved to garage sale and enjoyed games shows. She also loved watching the 4th of July Parade go by.

She is survived by her children, Ronnie Haas of Independence, Leo Haas of Arlington, Terry Haas of Independence, Roxanne Thorpe of Independence, Jerry Dean Haas, Scott Foster of Illinois, Terrill Adams of Independence, Cheryl “Sissy” Adams of Oelwein and Dennis Adams of Waterloo; three sisters, Evelyn Nading of Elkader, Lorraine Deeds of Cedar Rapids, Carol Strawn of Arlington and a brother, Larry Hohmann. Also surviving are many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, a sister Patricia Knight and a brother, Donald Minkler.

Private family services will take place. Burial will be at a later date.
