Rev. John D. Clark

Rev. John D. Clark, 66, of Independence, Iowa died Sunday morning, June 10, 2007 at Mercy Hospital in Oelwein, Iowa following a short illness.

John was born on August 11, 1940 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Walter and Esther (Beasley) Clark. He received his education in Waterloo, Iowa and graduated from the Phoenix Union High School in Phoenix, AZ. He received a Ministry Diploma from the Open Bible College in Eugene, OR., and a Masters of Divinity degree from Denver Seminary in Denver, CO. He was united into marriage to Bonita E. Hudgens on April 20, 1974 in Ottumwa, Iowa. John served churches in Wyoming, Pennsylvania, and Nebraska and taught at a Open Bible College in Des Moines, Iowa prior to moving to Independence in 1983 where he became a Chaplain at the Mental Health Institution working for 19 years prior to his retirement in 2002.

He is survived by his wife Bonita E. Clark of Independence, IA., a sister; Mary Urquehart, Coeur D Alene, ID, and three brothers; Rollie Clark, Pinellas Park, FL., LeRoy Clark, Walker, MI., and Paul Clark, Des Moines, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother; Tom Clark.

Funeral services will be held at 11A.M. Thursday at the Hope Wesleyan Church in Independence with burial at 3 P.M. Thursday at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery , Ottumwa, IA. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence and from 9 A.M. till services Thursday at the church.

Richard G. Higgins

Richard G. Higgins, 70, of Rowley, Iowa died peacefully at his home Sunday afternoon, June 10, 2007 surrounded by his family, following a long illness.

Richard was born on March 12, 1937 in Independence, Iowa the son of Andrew J. and Emma (Koranda) Higgins. He received his education in the Walker Schools, Walker, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army from June 9, 1960, thru May 22, 1962. He was united into marriage to Darlene R. Sadler on October 8, 1962 in St. Anthanasius Catholic Church in Jesup, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Rowley area, and owned and operated the Paradise Donut Shop in Independence from 1986 thru 2002.

Richard was a devout husband and a kind and caring father. He enjoyed camping, fishing, horse back riding, mushroom hunting, and just about anything with being outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene Higgins, Rowley, Iowa three sons; Daryl (Alice) Higgins, Brandon, IA., Gary (Leah) Higgins, Winthrop, IA., and Kenny (Kimberley) Higgins, Walker, IA., four daughters; Lori (Jim) Baxley, Winthrop, IA., Linda (Scott) Justason, Rowley, IA., Debbie (Chuck Kress) Higgins, Independence, IA., and Diane (Mark) Sands, Delhi, IA., twenty two grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren, and a sister; Mary Ann Bissell, Center Point, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Christopher Bruns, a son-in-law, Daniel Bruns, and a brother Robert Higgins.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at St. PatrickÂ’s Catholic Church in Winthrop, IA with Rev. Aloysius J. Vorwald officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery , Walker, IA., with graveside military honors. Friends may call from 2 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, Iowa, where a rosary will be held at 3 P.M. and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 P.M. Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to: St. PatrickÂ’s Catholic Church, 209 5th Ave. NE, Independence, IA 50644, or to Cedar Valley Hospice, 801 1st Street East, Independence, IA 50644

Karen Kay Williams

Karen K. Williams, 65, of Spirit Lake, formally of Independence, Iowa died Thursday, June 14, 2007 at the Lakes Regional Hospital, Spirit Lake following a long illness.

Karen was born September 4, 1941 in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred C. and Grace M. (Weepie) Williams Sr. She attended school in the Fairbank area and later received her GED from Hawkeye Community College. She worked as a Nurses Aid at the Mental Health Institute, Iowa Ham and most recently BerkleyÂ’s in Spirit Lake, IA. Karen enjoyed crafting, ceramics, sewing and Nascar. Even though she had no grandchildren of her own, she was a grandmother to many.

She is survived by a daughter Lori Williams of Spirit Lake, IA ; two brothers, Alfred Williams Jr. of Fairbank, IA, David Williams of Littleton, IA; two sisters, Eva Hansen of Spirit Lake, Iowa and Rita Moore of Nashville, TN.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence. Burial: Littleton Cemetery , Littleton, IA. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday and from 9 A.M. until services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Paul A. Kurash

Paul A. Kurash, 54, of Independence, Iowa, formerly of Homestead, died at the Mercy Hospice House, Hiawatha following a long illness.

Paul was born June 28, 1952 in Waucoma, Iowa the son of Louis & Gertrude (Kuhn) Kurash. He attended St. MaryÂ’s School in Waucoma and graduated from the Turkey Valley High School in 1970. Following his graduation Paul served in the U.S. Air Force from September 15,1970 serving till his discharge January 81976. He returned to the Homestead, Iowa area and was employed as a wood craftsman and foreman for the Amana Furniture Shop, Amana, Iowa from 1976 until his retirement in 2006. On May 17, 2007 he was united into marriage to Patricia Bowman.

Paul was a loving son, husband, and brother who enjoyed woodworking, making ornamental iron art, gardening, feeding and watching birds, and cooking.

He is survived by his wife Patricia, his mother Gertrude Kurash of New Hampton, a brother, Robert (Till) Kurash of Pueblo West, CO, two sisters Susan (Leo) Fausch of Lake City, MN and Marion (Don) Peters of Raymond.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday, June 30, 2007 at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence. Burial: Mt. Hope Cemetery . Friends may call from 10 A.M. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

John "Joe" Butters

Independence – John “Joe” Butters, 81, of Independence, Iowa died Sunday, July 8, 2007 at his summer home following a long illness.

Joe was born February 4, 1926 in Independence, Iowa the son of Charles & Emma J. (Elder) Butters. He attended the Rowley High School and served in the United States Army from January 7, 1946 to June 11, 1947. Joe was united in marriage to Doris Dallenbach on October 17, 1981 at her home in Oelwein, Iowa. Joe worked in the foundry at John Deere for over 40 years. Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He also loved to make things out of wood, whether it be making furniture, clocks, picture frames or jokes for his children.

He is survived be his wife Doris, daughters, Karen (David) Dubbeld of Warsaw, IN, Dawn ( Harry) Meek of Independence, IA, Phyllis (Charles) Decker of Independence, Pam (Duane) Walker of Oelwein, Iowa, Jacquie (Ralph) Heinz of Jesup, IA, Barb Trower of Bakersfield, CA, two sons, Bruce (Debbie) Butters of Independence, Donald (Kathy) Trower of Bakersfield, CA, a brother Felix Butters of Independence; 22 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Wayne Butters, a daughter, Mary Louise Butters and three brothers, Louis, Edgar and Patrick Butters.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 A.M. Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence with the Rev. Aloysius J. Vorwald officiating. Burial: Mt. Hope Cemetery . Friends may call from 5 to 7 P.M Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at the funeral home where there will be a 7 P.M. Military Service. Friends may also call from 9 A.M. until service time Wednesday.

Emma L. Hack

Emma L. Hack, 91, of Oelwein, Iowa died Wednesday morning, July 11, 2007 at Mercy Hospital, Oelwein, following a short illness.

Emma was born March 29, 1916 in West Union, Iowa. She graduated from the Hawkeye High School in Hawkeye, Iowa. She was united into marriage to Raymond Hack on August 3, 1937 in West Union, Iowa. Together they farmed in the Maynard, West Union and Hawkeye area. They move to Winthrop, IA in 1956. Emma recently resided in Oelwein

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1990, a daughter Elaine Ameling and a son Ronald Hack.

She is survived by three daughters, Judy Hettinger of Brandon, Iowa, Linda Phillips of Decorah, Iowa, Trudy Hack of Oelwein, Iowa and a son Raymond (Kathy) Hack of Independence, Iowa, and 9 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 10 A.M. Saturday, July 14, 2007 at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence. Inurnment: Wilson Cemetery . Friends may call from 9 A.M. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Richard L. Postel

Richard L. Postel, 51, of Independence, Iowa died Tuesday afternoon, February 9, 2010 at his home in Independence following a short illness with cancer.

Richard was born on June 29, 1958, in Independence, Iowa the son of Billy and Jean (Olsen) Postel. He attended the Independence Schools and then became employed as a truck driver with Halford & Sons, F.J. Krob, Wieland & Sons Lumber Co., and the Postel Welding Shop. He was united in Marriage to Kathy McCardle on December 28, 1976 in Independence, Iowa

Richard enjoyed Demolition Derbies especially car "95R", riding his Harley and driving his 1965 Mustang Fastback, playing pool, washing his truck, hunting and fishing. He loved his wife, sons, and his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Kathy, three sons; Chad (Lori) Postel, Tim and Adam Postel all of Independence, Iowa two grandchildren; Grant and Kegan Postel, His Mother, Jean Postel, Independence, and 8 brothers and sisters; Mary Jean (Carl) Eddy, Bill (Charlotte) Postel, Mike Postel, all of Independence, IA., Pat (Larry) Hunziker, Shellsburg, IA., Kenny (Robin) Postel, Independence, IA., Brenda (Mike) Freeland, Hudson, IA., Becky (Darrell) Williams, Vinton, IA., and Wendy (Rick) Schoenfield, Independence, IA.

He was preceded in death by his father Billy Postel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, February 13th, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, IA, with burial in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery . Friends may call from 1 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence where a parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 P.M. Friday.

Honorary Casket Bearers will be John & Porcia Grover, Brad & Lee Ann Cusick, Jim & Sue Davis, Jon & Cheryl Halford, Dennie & Panda Schnepf, Dave & Joan Lynch, Billie & Debbie Rundlett, and Dick & Earlene Pint. The Casket Bearers will be Tony Schmitt, Mike McCardle, Joe Yoder, Justin Temeyer, Delbert Thompson, and Mark Fangman.

Kaye N. White

Kaye N. White, 90, of Independence, Iowa died Wednesday afternoon, March 3, 2010 at her home at Prairie Hills Assisted Living Center in Independence, Iowa following a short illness.

Kaye was born on August 1, 1919 in Kirriemuir Alberta Canada the daughter of John and Kate (Lupino) Mazur. She came to the Independence area at the age of 3 where she attended the Byron Township Country School and graduated from the Winthrop High School in 1937. She received a teaching certificate from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and taught in the Buchanan County Schools. On August 19, 1941 she was united in marriage to John A. White in Independence, Iowa. The couple farmed north of Independence. Kaye was also employed in the food service department of Peoples Memorial Hospital and in the deli at Isham’s Grocery.

She was a member of the St. John’s Rosary Society and the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed making ice cream rolls, cakes, and playing cards.

Survivors include eight children; John White, Independence, IA., Jim White, Stanwood, IA., Judy (Terry) Thiessen, Winthrop, IA., Jerry White, West Branch, IL., Joe White, Shell Rock, IA., Jeff (Luci) White, Independence, IA., Janet (Len) Billerbeck, Cedar Rapids, IA., and Jackie (Jim) Engelbrecht, Mt. Vernon, IA., nineteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and sister Mary Jane Diltz of Phoenix, AZ.

Preceded in death by her parents John and Kate Mazur, daughter Patricia White, brothers John, Tom and Joe Mazur, and sisters Josephine Decker, Ann Buelow, and Agnes Wilson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence with Rev. Don Plamondon officiating. Music will be provided by the St. John's Choir with Jenni White, Soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Bonnie O'Brien, organist. Burial will be in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery , Independence with the grandchildren serving as casket bearers. Friends may call from 3 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence where a rosary will be recited at 3 P.M. by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and a parish vigil service will be held at 7 P.M. Friday.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Kay White Memorial fund, at Security State Bank, 231 1st St. E. Independence, IA 50644.

Connie Mae Kraninger

Connie Mae Kraninger, 59, of Independence, Iowa died Saturday morning, March 6, 2010, at her home in Independence, Iowa following a short illness with cancer.

Connie was born on May 6, 1950, in New Hampton, Iowa the daughter of Joseph F. and Helen E. (Kohles) Sullivan. She was a 1968 graduate of the Immaculate Conception Catholic High School in Elma, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Garry J. Kraninger on July 11, 1970 in St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Elma, Iowa. The couple moved to Independence in 1987. Connie was employed as a supervisor with APAC in Waterloo, Iowa prior to becoming ill.

She is survived by her husband; Garry, three children; Carrie Jo (Steven) Cusher, Sally Jo (Ryan Halbur) Kraninger both of Independence, Iowa and Roy Joseph (Karina) Kraninger, Tripoli, IA., six grandchildren; Nicholas James, Anna Rose, Riley Mae, Taylor James, Garrett Michael, and Ethan James, and four sisters; Shirley Daleske, Eldora, IA., JoAnn Bork, Des Moines, IA., Charlene Tull, Tumwater, Washington, and Nancy Gibbons, Mason City, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister; Myrna Wagner.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence with Rev. Don Plamondon officiating. Burial will be in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 3 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence where a rosary will be recited at 3 P.M. and a parish vigil service will be held at 7 P.M. Tuesday.

Robert James Cooksley, Jr.

URBANA – Robert J. Cooksley, Jr., 43, of Urbana, Iowa died suddenly Sunday afternoon, March 7, 2010 at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, Iowa.

Bob was born on June 17, 1966, in Ft. Dix, New Jersey the son of Robert and Paula (Leona) Cooksley, Sr. He was raised in the Rowley, Iowa area and was a 1984 graduate of the St. John’s Catholic High School, Independence, Iowa and received an accounting degree from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Ann Miller in 1989, the couple later divorced. On August 18, 2007 he was married to Shiela Ann Sweeting at their home in Urbana. Bob was employed with the ERBS Business Machines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Surviving is his wife Shiela, Urbana, IA., three children; Tyler, Ryan, and Holly Cooksley all of Independence, his parents Bob and Paula Cooksley, Sherrard, IL., a brother Scott (Michelle) Cooksley, Quasqueton, IA., his parents-in-law; Darwin & Linda Sweeting, Center Point, IA., and brother & sister-in-law; Susan (Kurt) Morris, and Ben (Molly Sanderson) Sweeting all of Center Point, Iowa, and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday March 11, 2010 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence with Rev. Paul McManus officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence where a parish vigil service will be held at 7 P.M.
