C.J. (Clement) Quinn
C.J. (Clement) Quinn, 93, of Independence, Iowa died Thursday, March 11th at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence following a short illness.
C.J. was born on February 11, 1917, near Oelwein, Iowa the son of James H. and Agnes L. (McSweeney) Quinn. He graduated from the Sacred Catholic High School in Oelwein, IA. He served in the U.S. Army during World War Two. On November 4, 1942 he was united in marriage to Margie A. Burns at Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Las Vegas, Nevada. The couple farmed in the Independence area prior to his retirement.
Surviving are six children; Linda (Curt) Huff, Moline, IL., Kathleen Appleby, Independence, IA., Bill (Ann) Quinn, Independence, IA., Mary Jo (Don) Mai, Dubuque, IA., Diane (Ken) Heiple, Independence, IA., and Julie (Randy) Johnson, LaPorte City, IA., thirteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and a sister; Evelyn Quinn, Independence, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Margie in 2002, two sons; James and Richard Quinn, two brothers; Francis and Emmett Quinn, and a sister; Mary Schwartz.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday March 13, 2010 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence with Rev. Paul McManus officiating. Burial will be in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 2 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence where a rosary will be recited at 3 P.M., a military memorial service will be held at 7 P.M. and parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 PM Friday.
Geraldine C. Ullrich
Geraldine C. Ullrich, 87, of Independence, Iowa, died Thursday morning, March 11, 2010 at the East Towne Manor in Independence, Iowa.
Geraldine was born on June 8, 1922, in Adrian,
Minnesota the daughter of Henry E. and Laura M. (Schulte) Brabender. She moved with her family to Woodward, Iowa and graduated from the Woodward High School. On April 7, 1951 she married Ronald C. Ullrich in Des Moines, Iowa. The couple resided in
Minnesota and Jesup Iowa prior to moving to Independence in 1959.
She is survived by six sons; Steven (Jane) Ullrich, Savage, MN., Mark Ullrich, Huston, TX. Robert (Kim) Ullrich, Rockport, TX., David Ullrich and Tom (Jodi) Ullrich, Chicago, IL., and Jim Ullrich, Pittsburg, PA., sixteen grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ron in 1989, two daughters; Margo and Marie in infancy and her sister Mary Augustine in 2006.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday March 15, 2010 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence with Rev. Don Plamondon officiating. Burial will be in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery , Independence, IA. Friends may call from 5 to 7 P.M. Sunday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence where a rosary will be recited at 5 P.M., and a parish vigil service will be held at 7 PM Friday.
Louis C. Nuehring
Louis C. Nuehring, 89, of Marshalltown, Iowa, and formerly of Independence, Iowa, died Monday, March 15h, 2010, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa.
Louis was born on November 23, 1920, in Lytton, Iowa the son of Carl and Frieda (Boetcher) Nuehring. He attended the Arnolds Park, and Spirit Lake Schools and became a conservation officer with the State of Iowa, working in the Des Moines, Algona, prior to coming to Independence, He was united in marriage to Faye E. Choate in Lytton, Iowa on January 5, 1951.
He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp September 1942, enrolled in Officer Training and served as 2nd Lieutenant flying P-38 Lightning Fighter and DC-3 Cargo planes in the Pacific during WWII. He retired from the Air Force inactive reserves in 1960 as a Captain.
He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Faye on February 13, 2010, a step-son; Maurice Noel, a brother Walter Nuehring, and two sisters; Rose Diesen, and Louise Dayton.
Graveside Memorial services for Louis and Faye will be held at 11 AM Saturday, March 27th, 2010 at the Unionville Cemetery , three miles west of Unionville, MO. on hwy 136.
John J. De La Hunt
John J. De La Hunt, 78, of Oelwein, Iowa and formerly of Independence, Iowa died Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at the Grandview Care Center in Oelwein, Iowa.
John was born on March 16, 1931 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the son of Rex and Ethel (Flook) De La Hunt. He received his education in the Cedar Rapids Schools, and was employed as a cook in various Restaurants in the Cedar Rapids area and for Paradise Donuts in Independence prior to his retirement.
He is survived by a brother; Ted De La Hunt of White Hall, Ar., and a sister Jeri Potts, Decatur, TN.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Private memorial services will be held at a later date. The Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory of Independence, IA is in charge of arrangements.
Ellen Marie McGrath
Ellen Marie McGrath, 83, of Independence, Iowa, died Thursday morning, April 1, 2010, at the Buchanan County Health Center, Independence following a short illness with cancer.
Ellen Marie was born on May 19, 1926, in Waterloo, Iowa the daughter of Lewis and Doris (Fitzgerald) McGrath. She attended the Westburg No. 3 Country School and graduated from St. John’s Catholic High School, Independence. She attended Clarke College in Dubuque, IA., and then joined her family in the Livestock Business.
She was active in many organizations over the years such as Beta Sigma Phi, St. John’s Rosary Society, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, St. John’s Choir, Chautauqua Literary Club, and was active in the Democratic Party.
Surviving are numerous cousins, other relative and friends
Ellen Marie was preceded in death by her parents.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 A.M., Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence with Rev. Don Plamondon officiating, with Rich Toale as the lector. Mary Donlea will present a special reading following communion. Music will be provided by Bridget Donnelly and Andy Leonard, soloist, accompanied by Bonnie O'Brien.
Burial will be in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery
with Denny Donlea, Brian Donnelly, Dan Donnelly, Dennis Donnelly, Emmett Donnelly, Mike Donnelly, Roger Donnelly, Tim Donnelly, Randy Endres, and Joe Kresser. Bill Curry, Dick Curry and Rick Fiester will serve as Honorary Casket Bearers, with a Honor Guard provided by the Catholic Daughters of America
Friends may call from 3 to 8 P.M. Monday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence were a rosary will be recited at 3 P.M. and a parish vigil service to be held at 7 P.M. Monday.
Jeannie R. Neeley
Jeannie Neeley, resident of Independence, Iowa, died following a lengthy battle with lymphoblastic leukemia on April 1, 2010 at the Buchanan County Health Center. She was 61.
Jeannie was born May 8, 1948, in Shidler, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Gilbert and Helen (Bertling) Rhodes. She grew up in Osage County, Oklahoma, and graduated from Shidler High School in 1966 and from Oklahoma State University in 1970 with a degree in Education. She and Bruce Neeley were married November 29, 1980, in Arlington, Texas. She, Bruce and their daughter, Andrea, moved to Independence in August 1991.
She was an active member of Hope Wesleyan Church, where she sang in the choir and lead youth programs. She founded and nurtured the Independence Mentoring Program as a ministry to the children and mentors of the Independence Community Schools (ICS). She was passionate about helping children and promoting education. Those passions lead her to a rich career in volunteerism in the political action committee, People 4 Progress; PEO; ICS PTA and the ICS Superintendent’s Advisory Council.
She is survived by her husband Bruce, their daughter Andrea, and son-in-law Daniel Elnecave. She is also survived by her mother Helen Rhodes of Shidler, Oklahoma, her sister Vi Harmon of Ponca City, Oklahoma, numerous nieces and nephews, those of her church family and beloved friends.
Preceding her in death were her father, Gilbert Rhodes, and sister RaMona Collins.
There will be a Celebration of Life Service held at the Hope Wesleyan Church, in Independence at 11am Wednesday morning. Preceding the service there will be a gathering of friends and family at the church starting at 10am. A barbeque luncheon at Bill’s Steakhouse will follow the service with all invited.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Independence Dollars for Scholars, Jeannie Neeley Mentoring Scholarships for former mentoring students.
Nancy E. See
Nancy E. See, 67, of Independence, Iowa died Monday evening, April 5, 2010 at the Grandview Care Center in Oelwein, Iowa following a long illness.
Nancy was born March 6, 1943, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of William E. and Patricia M. (Hanna) Scott. She was a 1961 graduate of the Independence High School, and was united in marriage to Harvey L. See on February 17, 1973. She was employed as a Psychiatric Aid with the Mental Health Institute in Independence, and later as an aid with the Independence Community Schools in Independence.
She is survived by her husband Harvey, a step-son T.J Jacobi, Chelsea, IA., two grandsons, two sisters; Carol Ann (David) Draper, Cedar Falls, IA., Billie Jo Tonn, Independence, IA., and three brothers; Carlos “Butch” (Grace) Scott, Jesup, IA., Harry (Connie) Scott, Independence, IA., and Steven (Patricia) Scott, Raymond, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a step-son, Terry Jacobi, and a brother-in-law Richard Tonn. .
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence with Dr. David Larson officiating. Burial will be held in the Mt. Hope Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Thursday, and from 8 A.M. till services Friday at the funeral home.
George L. Albert
George L. Albert, 81, of Independence, Iowa died Wednesday morning, April 14, 2010, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, Iowa following a short illness.
George was born on November 1, 1928, in Brandon, Iowa the son of John and Cora E. (Loveless) Albert. He attended the Brandon Schools. He was employed with Bert Gray Implement and Whitehead Produce Hauling prior to becoming employed with the Wapsi Creamery on September 10, 1944. He became the Head Cheese Maker in 1985, and retired on March 1, 1991.
He was united in marriage to Janice Marie Zimmer on June 20, 1950 in Independence, Iowa where the couple made their home.
He is survived by his wife Janice, two children; Kathy (Rick) Krebsbach, Spencer, Iowa, and Ann Marie Schnepf, Independence, IA, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a sister; Irene Geiger, Vinton, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Kirk Albert, five sisters; Marie Gill, Edna Schneeman, Dorothy Walker, Grace Behrends, and Frances Donels, and four brothers; Milo Albert, Raymond Albert, Kenneth Albert, and LaVerne Albert.
Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Saturday, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, with Rev. Sue Ann Raymond officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M Friday and from 8 A.M. to services Saturday at the funeral home.
William J. Givens
William J. Givens, 54, of Phoenix, AZ., and formerly of Independence, Iowa, died Thursday, April 8, 2010, in Phoenix, AZ.
William was born on July 23, 1954 in Independence, Iowa, the son of Alexander and Isabelle (Mock) Givens. He was a 1973 graduate of the Independence High School, Independence, IA., and received a BBA degree from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. Following his graduation he moved to the Phoenix area where he became a self employed courier.
He is survived by two brothers; Bruce and David Givens both of Evansdale, Iowa

Michael G. Winders
Michael G. Winders, 60, of rural Winthrop, Iowa died Saturday afternoon, April 24, 2010 at the Manor Care Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa following a long illness.
Mike was born on July 11, 1949, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the son of Willis W. and Clare (Andres) Winders. He was a 1967 graduate of the Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids. He served in the US. Army during the Vietnam War. He was married to Virginia Kirklin in 1968 the couple later divorced. He was employed with the Link Belt Company and with Goss Manufacturing
Surviving are two sons; Michael and Theodore Winders both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
