Janice M. Albert

Janice M. Albert, 78, of Independence, Iowa died Saturday evening, April 24, 2010, at the West Village Care Center in Independence, Iowa following a short illness.

She was born on March 9, 1932 in Independence, Iowa the daughter of Edward J. and Elizabeth M. (Frank) Zimmer. She was a 1950 graduate of the Independence High School. She was united in marriage to George L. Albert on June 20, 1950 in Independence, Iowa where the couple made their home. Janice was employed with the Independence Community Schools as a Lunch Room Aid from 1971 till her retirement in 1994.

She is survived by two children; Kathy (Rick) Krebsbach, Spencer, Iowa, and Ann Marie Schnepf, Independence, IA, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a brother Edward J. Zimmer, Independence, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George on April 14, 2010, a son Kirk Albert, and two brothers; Robert H. Zimmer, and Ronald M. Zimmer.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Wednesday, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, with Rev. Sue Ann Raymond officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 5 to 8 P.M Tuesday and from 8 A.M. to services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Robert P. McBride

Robert P. McBride, 73, of Oelwein, Iowa and formerly of the Dubuque, Iowa area died Tuesday evening, May 18th, 2010 at the Grandview Care Center in Oelwein, Iowa following a short illness.

Bob was born on July 10, 1936, in Dubuque, Iowa the son of Paul and Lucille (French) McBride. He attended Senior High School in Dubuque, Iowa, and was married to Mary L. Kapparos on September 5, 1970 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Dubuque, Iowa. He was employed as a chef with the Chateau Supper Club, Dubuque, IA., The Heights Supper Club, Monticello, IA., and Club 528, Cascade, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife Mary McBride, Oelwein, Iowa, two children; Robert (Laurie) McBride, Marion, Iowa, and Michele McBride, Des Moines, Iowa, and special friends Susan Kauten and Jason Westholm

He was preceded in death by his parents; Paul McBride and Lucille (James) Pratt

Memorial Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, Iowa where friends may call from 9 A.M. Friday till services. Inurnment will be held in the Fontana Cemetery , Hazelton, Iowa.

Betty Lou (Haisch) Huston

Betty Lou (Haisch) Huston, 71, of Independence, Iowa died Tuesday Morning, June 8, 2010, at Manor Care Center, Waterloo, Iowa following a long illness.

Betty was born on December 5, 1938, in Garretson, South Dakota, the daughter of Scandinavian/American descendents Obert Ellefson and Esther (Anderson Ellefson) Loken. She was a 1957 graduate of the Augusta Academy, Canton, SD. She received a Registered Nursing Degree from Sioux Valley Hospital School of Nursing, Sioux Falls, SD. in 1959, A BS of Nursing, Upper Iowa University, Fayette, Iowa in 1982 and a double Master degree in Education and Nursing from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1985. She was employed as a Supervisor of acute intensive treatment services at the Mental Health Institute, Independence, IA 1959-62, Head Nurse, Virginia Gay Hospital, Vinton, IA 1962-65, Office Nurse for Dr. G.A. Fry and Dr. Norman Reitzel, Vinton, IA 1965-70, Instructor of Psychiatric Nursing at the Mental Health Institute, Independence, IA 1970- until her retirement in Nov. 2009

Betty was married to Lloyd Donald Haisch on September 7, 1959 at Canton, SD., the couple later divorced. On September 6, 1985 she was married to Michael Hugh Huston in Las Vegas, NV.

Betty was a member of the American Nurses Association and the Ladies Musical Society. She enjoyed Reading, Playing Golf, Swimming, and playing the Piano. She was a church organist for St. John’s Catholic Church, and St. James Episcopal Church in Independence, IA.

She is survived by two children: Mark (Barbara) Haisch, Clive, IA., and Ann Marie (Chris) Fegter, Lincoln, NE., two grandchildren; Lindsey Jean, and Daniel Mark Haisch, Clive, IA., and a sister; Annette (Rev. Louis) Hermansen, Roseau, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband Mike Huston in 1997.

Funeral services will be held at 10 A.M. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, IA., with Rev. Sue Ann Raymond, and Rev. Louis Hermansen officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery , Independence, IA. Friends may call from 9 A.M. till services at the funeral home.

Earl R. Staack

Earl R. Staack, 83, of Independence, Iowa died Friday evening, June 11, 2010 at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence following a long illness.

Earl was born on February 2, 1927 in Bush Creek, Iowa, the son of Fred R. and Ella M. (Hay) Staack. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II, and was married to Laureda Ann Meyer in May 1956 the couple later divorced. Earl was employed with the John Deere Company, Waterloo for over 30 years prior to his retirement.

He is survived by four children; Nancy Staack Muir Independence, IA., Thomas (Sue) Staack, Eldon, MO., Diana (Greg) Devens, Bellevue, IA., and Byron Staack, Oelwein, IA., seven grandchildren, and two step-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Mitchell Staack, a grandson, Erik Earl Stoppel, seven brothers and sisters; Edna Hayden, Elsie Schmadeke, Eldora Staack, Ervin Staack, Clarence Staack, Lorenz Staack, and Everett Staack.

Memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence with burial in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Leon G. Baskerville

Leon G. Baskerville, 71, of Independence, Iowa, died Saturday morning, June 12, 2010, at the Buchanan County Health Center, Independence following a short illness.

Leon was born on January 27, 1939, in Earlville, Iowa the son of George L. and Amelia I. (Gibbs) Baskerville. He was a 1956 graduate of the Oneida Schools, and was married to Patsy L. Eddy on November 14, 1964 in Independence, Iowa. Leon was employed as the manager at the Derby Service Station and owned and operated the Lake and Land Sporting Goods Store in Manchester, Iowa prior to becoming a computer technician with the Computer Store in Independence, Iowa

He is survived by his wife Patsy Baskerville, two children Amy Baskerville, Thedford, NE., and John Baskerville, Clermont, FL..

He was preceded by his parents, a brother; LeRoy John Baskerville, and a sister; Yvonne Peasley.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Thursday, June 17, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church, Independence with Rev. Dennis Bailey officiating. Burial will be in the Wilson Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence and from 12 Noon till services Thursday at the church.

Jennie Lee (Rohbacher) McDonald

Jennie Lee (Rohbacher) McDonald, 67, of Independence, died Wednesday morning, June 23, 2010, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo following a short illness.

Jennie was born February 27, 1943, in Amana, Iowa the daughter of Frank and Elisabeth (Werner) Rohbacher. On December 30th, 1967 she married Lawrence Martin McDonald. They lived in Marengo, IA for many years before moving to Branson, Missouri where she worked as a sales associate for Yakov-Smirnoff. They recently moved to Independence to be near family

She is survived by her husband Lawrence McDonald, sons Kevin, And Shawn McDonald, daughter Michelle “Shelly” (Don) Tuttle, grandchildren Dustin Bena, Joshua, Nicole, and Daren Tuttle, Beth McDonald, one great grandchild Daylyn Willis, and sister Roselyn Collingwood.

She is preceded in death by her parents Frank and Elisabeth (Werner) Rohbacher.

Funeral service will be held at 7 P.M. Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at the Reiff Funeral Home and Crematory in Independence, where friends may call from 3 PM to services.

Jerry Lee Postel

Jerry Lee Postel, 71, of Independence, Iowa, died Thursday morning, July 8, 2010, at his home in Independence following a short illness.

Jerry was born on December 29, 1938, in Independence, Iowa the son of Max and Ruth (Scott) Postel. He was a 1958 graduate of the Independence High School and was united in marriage to Sandra Kay Hughes on June 16, 1960 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence. Jerry served in the U.S. Army from November 7, 1961 thru Nov. 1, 1963 following his discharge he returned to Independence where he was employed as an assistant manager with the Jack & Jill Grocery Store, as a custodian with the Independence Community School District, and owned and operated the Maid Rite Restaurant in Independence, Iowa prior to his retirement.

He is survived by three children; Tori (Kevin) Joblinske, Chip and Coy Postel all of Independence, and four grandchildren; Taylor and Connor Joblinske, Jeremey Sherwood, and Clarista Postel, and a sister; Diane Johnson, Independence, IA., and a special friend Sandie Hohl

He was preceded in death by his parents Max Postel and Ruth (Scott) Bearbower, and his wife Sandra in 2002.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, July 12, 2010 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, IA., with Rev. Don Plamondon officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 3 to 8 P.M. Sunday, and from 8 to 10 A.M. Monday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, IA.

Daniel D. Shaffer

Daniel D. Shaffer, 51, of Independence, Iowa died Tuesday afternoon, July 13, 2010 at the University Hospitals in Iowa City, Iowa following a short illness.

Dan was born on September 18, 1958, in Kansas City, Missouri the son of Roberts and Katheryn (Kaiser) Shaffer. He attended the Independence High School and was united in marriage to Teri S. Spece in Independence, Iowa. He was employed with Viking Pump, and Farm Services prior to farming with his son-in-law Mike Reilly near Coggon, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife Teri Shaffer, three children; Amy (Mike) Reilly, Coggon, IA., Adam (Anna Redfearn), Hiawatha, IA., Alicia (Jason Singelton) Independence, IA., four grandchildren; Alissa Shaffer, Addison Shaffer, Hunter Reilly, and Ethan Shaffer, and a sister; Connie (Jeff) Paxton, Laurel, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence with Rev. Scott Meador officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery , Independence, IA. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday and from 8 AM till services at the funeral home

Glenda P. Nabholz

Glenda P. Nabholz, 88, of Independence, Iowa died Friday morning, July 23, 2010, at the Buchanan County Long Term Care Center in Independence following a short illness.

Glenda was born on October 1, 1921, in Independence, Iowa the daughter of Hugo J. and Anna Mae (Weston) Melka. She graduated from the Independence High School in 1940 and was united in marriage to Homer L. Nabholz on June 22, 1943. The couple farmed in the Westburg Township in Buchanan County until their retirement. Glenda was active member of the Wesleyan Church and Grace Evangelical Church and the Buchanan County Farm Bureau Women.

She is survived by three children; Carol (Robert) Fisher, Independence, IA., Larry Nabholz, and Jay (Jennifer) Nabholz both of Waterloo, Iowa, three grandchildren; Todd Fisher, Carrie Bolles, and Brad Fisher, three great grandchildren; Jacob, Addison and Lucas Bolles, and two sisters; Velma Nabholz, O'Brien, Fl., and Opal Hirsch, Waterloo, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Homer in 2004, two brothers; Harry and Donald Melka and a sister; Dorothy Schmidt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday at Grace Evangelical Church, Independence with Pastor Mike Root officiating. Burial will be in the Wilson Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 1 to 5 P.M. Sunday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, and from 9 A.M. till services Monday at the Church.

John W. “Bill” Ryan

John W. “Bill” Ryan, 65, of Monti, died Tuesday, August 3 at his home from Carcinoid Syndrome.

Friends may call from 3-8 Thursday at the Monti Community Center, 2854 Washington Ave, Monti, IA., where a scripture service will be held at 7:30 P.M. Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Friday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 2858 Washington Ave. Monti, with burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery . Officiating will be Fr. Al Vorwald.

Bill was born December 18, 1944 in Monti, the son of John F. (Bud) and Rose (Durham) Ryan. He married Paula Casey on August 24, 1968. Together they farmed and raised their daughters in Monti.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Paula, his four daughters: Sheila Robinson and husband Rick of Marion, Rebecca Pflughaupt and husband Dustin of Troy Mills, Jennifer Westemeier and husband Grant of Walker, and Julie Ryan of Charles City.

He is also survived by his granddaughters Cecily and Brenna Robinson, Lindsey Pflughaupt and Maeve Westemeier and grandsons Brendan Westemeier and Bradley Pflughaupt, sisters Mary Ryan of Monti and Rita Allen of El Sobrante, CA, brothers and sisters-in-law Ann Casey, Bill Casey, Elaine Olson, Pat and Mary Casey, John and Donita Casey, Kevin and Carmen Casey and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents John F. (Bud) and Rose Ryan, his father and mother-in-law Paul and Generose Casey, brother-in-law Jerry Casey, and a sister-in-law Kathy Casey.

Bill loved to travel with his wife and together they visited Ireland ten times, as well as fourteen European destinations. Bill enjoyed driving his convertible, sitting in his hot tub and listening to Irish tunes. He was a generous and dependable friend and neighbor and in his younger years was a member of the Buffalo Bills Rope Pull team. He loved spending Sundays cooking for his family and having water gun fights with his grandchildren. We loved to hear him laugh, particularly when he was watching his sons-in-law work his cattle.

We hope he is enjoying endless pints of perfectly pulled Guinness. His favorite t-shirt states, Ní Bheidh Mo Leithéad Arís Ann (There'll never be the likes of me again.)
