Glen Tutwiler,

Glen Tutwiler, 85, died Wednesday, August 2010 at West Village Care Center in Independence where he had been a resident for the last year.

He was born in Lincoln, Ill to Irma Bressmer and George B. Tutwiler. After graduation from high school in Mt Pulaski, Ill, Glen joined the Marine Corps and served one tour. During his military service, he met and married Betty Peyton of Independence and later took up residence there. Glen attended Iowa State University and later worked for John Deere in Waterloo until being reactivated during the Korean War. After the war, he returned to Independence and was employed for 30 years at Leytze’s Furniture Store.

Glen is survived by his wife Betty; son Charles and wife Christine; daughter Sharon (Tutwiler) Wendling; 3 grandchildren, John Tutwiler and wife Sue; David Tutwiler; Elizabeth (Tutwiler) Guidry and husband Bobby; and one great grandchild, Autumn Guidry.

He was preceded in death by his mother Irma (Bressmer) Tutwiler Brooks; his father George Tutwiler; step father Lester Brooks; and granddaughter Angela (Tutwiler) Cameron.

Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, August 14, 2010 at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, IA. with Rev. John Hougen officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 8 A.M. till services Saturday at the funeral home.

Mary T. Bowden

Mary T. Bowden, 84, of Independence, Iowa died Saturday, August 28, 2010, at the West Village Care Center in Independence, Iowa following a short illness.

Mary was born on February 22, 1926 in St. Paul, Minnesota, the daughter of Charles and Frances (Murphy) Touhey. She was a 1944 graduate of St. John’s Catholic High School, Independence, Ia., and a 1945 graduate of the Gates College of Business, Waterloo, IA. She was united in marriage to Kenneth W. Bowden on November 25, 1952 in St. Paul, Minnesota. The family made their home in Independence where Mary was employed as a secretary with the Mental Health Institute then Fidelity Mutual Insurance in Waterloo, IA., prior to her retirement in 1962. She was a member and past president of the St. John’s Rosary Society, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, a founding member and past president of the Families in Action, and was active in the Humane Society often times taking in abandoned animals.

She is survived by two children; John Bowden, Rochester, MN., and Mary Wells, Independence, IA, and, four grandchildren; Mary, Therese, and Michael Wells, and Aaron Kite-Bowden, a great grandchild; Kayden Kite, and a sister; Roseanne Manguno, Oelwein, IA., and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Frances Touhey, her husband; Kenneth Bowden in 1991, a brother John Touhey, and a sister; Colleen Touhey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, IA with Rev. Don Plamondon officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 2 to 8 P.M. Monday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence where a rosary will be recited at 3 P.M. and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 P.M. Monday.

Michael R. Clark

Michael R. Clark 57, of Brandon, Iowa died Thursday morning, September 2, 2010 at the Buchanan County Health Center, Independence, Iowa following a short illness with cancer.

Michael was born on March 7, 1953 in Freeport, Texas, the son of Marjorie R. Halstead. The family moved to Brandon, Iowa area where he graduated from the Independence High School with the class of 1971. He was united in marriage to Phyllis J. Groenenboom on January 4, 1975 in Lacey, Iowa. Mike operated a Dairy Farm in the Brandon area and was employed as a general contractor with Rick’s General Services prior to becoming employed with Pries Enterprises Inc.

He is survived by his wife; Phyllis, three children; Jason (Angie) Clark, Springfield, IL., Adam (Emily) Clark, LaPorte City, IA., and Sara (Nathan) Krum, Winthrop, IA., five grandchildren; Kaitlyn and Natalie Krum, Caleb and Collin Clark, and Savannah Walvatne, and three sisters; Shirley Clark, Everett, Washington, Pat Marsh, Fairbank, Iowa, and Sue (Phil) Thompson, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his mother Marjorie (Halstead, Clark) Williams.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday at the Brandon United Methodist Church, Brandon, IA. with Rev. Lanette Sue Van officiating. Burial will be in the Brandon Cemetery . Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, and from 9 A.M. till services at the church in Brandon.

Ronald E. O’Brien

Ronald E. O’Brien, 61, of Independence, Iowa died Friday morning at his home from injuries sustained in a tractor accident.

Ron was born on September 16, 1948, in Independence, Iowa the son of Harvey and Bonnie (Hanna) O’Brien. He was a 1967 graduate of the Independence High School and served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict. On October 10, 1971 he was united in marriage to Mary A. Hayes in Las Vegas, NV. The couple made their home in Independence where Ron owned and operated the O’Brien Electric for 30 years.

Surviving besides his wife Mary are two children; Chad (Amy) O’Brien, Rowley, Iowa, Carie O’Brien, Norwalk, Iowa, five grandchildren; Ryley & Rece Smith, Erin O’Brien, Drew and Jace O’Brien, His Mother Bonnie O’Brien, Independence, a sister; Sue Brown, Dubuque, IA., and a brother; David O’Brien, Chino Valley, AZ.

He was preceded in death by father Harvey O’Brien, and a sister; Judi O’Brien.

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday, September 8th, at the First Presbyterian Church, Independence with Rev. John Hougen officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery , Independence, IA. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence and from 9 A.M. to services Wednesday at the Church. A military memorial service will be held at 7 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.

John D. Hermsen

John D. Hermsen, 72, of Independence, Iowa died Friday morning, September 10, 2010 at the Buchanan County Health Center, Independence following a short illness.

John was born on March 13, 1938, in Independence, Iowa the son of Alphonse L. and Olivia H. (Wernke) Hermsen. He was a 1956 graduate of the Winthrop High School, Winthrop, Iowa, and was united into marriage to Lois M. Curry on July 29, 1960 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence. John was employed with the John Deere Company, in Waterloo prior to his retirement in 1986.

John enjoyed riding motor cycles, bowling, golfing, fishing and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

He is survived by his wife; Lois, four children; Deb (Ralph) Stiefel, Winthrop, IA., Diane (Steve) Leonard, Cedar Rapids, IA., Mark (Dawn) Hermsen, Cedar Rapids, IA., Michael (Jenifer) Hermsen, Des Moines, IA. Six grandchildren, two brothers; Merlin and Kenneth Hermsen, Independence, IA., two sisters; Alvera Hickey, Independence, and Anna Mae Strawn, Oelwein, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Jim Hermsen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence with Rev. Don Plamondon officiating. Burial will be in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 2 to 8 P.M. Sunday and 9 to 10 A.M. Devin L. Berry

Devin L. Berry, 20, stationed with the US Air Force in Albuquerque , NM and formerly of Independence, IA., died Thursday, September 9, 2010 in Albuquerque, NM

Devin was born on September 15, 1989 in Cedar Rapids, IA., the son of Kevin M. and Elizabeth A. (Glovik) Berry. He was a 2008 graduate of the Independence High School and entered the U.S. Air Force.

He is survived by his mother; Elizabeth Glovik-Berry, Independence, IA., his father; Kevin Berry, Palatine, IL., and a sister; Phelan Berry, Independence, IA., and his paternal grandfather; Jerry Berry, Bonnieville, KY., and step grandfather; Don Corcoran, Hazelton, IA

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; Robert & Beverly Glovik, Carol Corcoran

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 A.M. Saturday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence with Rev. Carl Glovik officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 2 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, where a Rosary will be recited at 3 P.M. and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:00 P.M. Friday.

Dorothy W. Clark

Dorothy W. Clark, 97 of Independence, Iowa and formerly of Quasqueton, Iowa died Sunday morning, September 19th, 2010 at the Buchanan County Long Term Care Center in Independence following a short illness.

Dorothy was born on March 3, 1913 in Los Angeles, CA., the daughter of Benjamin and Adella (Turner) Wade. She attended the Des Moines Schools, Des Moines, IA., and graduated from the Quasqueton Consolidated High School in 1931. On November 22, 1935 she was united in marriage to Raymond M. Clark in Iowa City, Iowa. They made their home in Quasqueton during their 60 years of marriage.

Dorothy was comfortable spending time alone with mystery books, movies, and English comedies on public television. But more than anything she enjoyed visiting with friends and family.

Dorothy was a member of the Union Protestant Church of Quasqueton, the Quasqueton Historical Society, and the Royal Neighbors of America.

She is survived by five children; Robert W. (Donna) Clark, and Arthur L. (Shirley) Clark, Quasqueton, IA., John S. (Patti) Clark, and Wayne Clark, Oelwein, IA., and Denise R. (Tom Burke) Clark-Burke, Independence, IA., 14 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. .

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday at the Union Church, Quasqueton, IA with Rev. Kevin Jennings officiating. Burial will be in the Quasqueton Cemetery . Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM Monday at the Reiff Funeral Home, Quasqueton, Iowa, and from 9 AM to services Tuesday at the church.

Darlene A. Brodigan

Darlene A. Brodigan, 87, of Independence, Iowa died Monday, September 27, 2010 at the Buchanan County Health Center, Independence, IA.

Darlene was born on August 10, 1923 in Marengo, Iowa the daughter of Perry R. and Lillian K. (Seckel) Wyant. She attended the Conroy Schools and was united in marriage to David E. Brodigan on June 22, 1953 in Quartzsite, AZ. The couple made their home in California, Minnesota prior to settling in Independence, Iowa where Darlene owned and operated the Dan & Deb’s Live Bait Shop in from 1967 to 1981.

She is survived by four children; Diane (Gene) Long, Jacksonville, FL., Dan (Darla) Brodigan, La Crescent, MN., Perry (LuAnn) Brodigan and James Brodigan, Independence, IA., twelve grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren; Shane Musel, Curt Smith, Chris Smith, Derrick Smith, Joey Long, David Wilson, Patrick Brodigan, Kate Brodigan, Gary Lynn, Rod Lynn, Megham Wheeler, Dalton Brodigan. and a brother; Donald Wyant, Clinton, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband David in 1982, two daughters; Sharon Musel and Deb Dickerson, a grandson; John Wilson, three sisters; Marjorie Gardner, Ida Plotz, Karen Baestle, and two brothers; Charles and William Wyant.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, October 1, 2010 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, IA., with Rev. Paul McManus officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 3 to 8 P.M. Thursday and from 9 to 10 A.M. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence where a rosary will be recited at 3 P.M. and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 P.M. Thursday.

Janette M. Lunde

Janette M. Lunde, 64, of Hazelton, Iowa died Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at the Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, IA.

Janette Lunde was born on April 17, 1946 in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Gilman and Kathryn (Raymond) Lunde. She attended the Mt. View College in Irving, Texas, and was employed for many years as a Transportation Broker for the Axcess Transportation Connection.

She is survived by two children; Kevin Edgeton, Fairbank, IA., and Trisha Loob, Wayachie, TX., four grandchildren, and brothers and sisters James Lunde, Des Moines, IA., Denise Brown Tulsa, OK., Charles Bower, Brooklyn Center, MN., Irene Lunde, Mt. Pleasant, IA., Mary Bower, Oakdale, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services will be held at 2 P.M. Sunday at the VFW Hall in Oran, Iowa. Burial will be at later date.

Marjorie M. Zieser

Marjorie M. Zieser, 77, of Independence, Iowa died Friday morning, October 8, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Marjorie was born on January 18, 1933, in Fairbank, Iowa the daughter of John P. and Myrtie M. (Diehl) Shannon. She was a 1950 graduate of the Independence High School, and was united in marriage to Louis J. Zieser on January 18, 1954. The family made their home in Independence.

Surviving are four children; Dee (Greg) Weber, Jesup, IA., Daniel (Sue) Zieser, Hazelton, IA., Denise Lellig, and Diana Zieser both of Independence, IA., eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a brother; Russell Shannon, Independence, Iowa

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Louis in 2007, 6 brothers; Jack, Francis, Donald, Duane, Richard, and Owen Shannon, a sister; Rosemary Shannon, 1 grandson, and a step great granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Monday, October 11, 2010 at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, IA with Sharon Bainbridge officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Sunday and from 9 AM till services Monday at the funeral home, where a rosary will be recited at 4 P.M. and a vigil service will be held at 7:30 P.M. Sunday.

LaQuetta Sue Weber

LaQuetta Sue Weber, 71, of Independence, Iowa died Thursday evening, September 22, 2011, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, Iowa.

Sue was born on May 2, 1940 in Caldwell Idaho the daughter of J.D. and Sybil (Bowman) Morris. She attended school in Madras, Oregon. On June 3, 1956 she was united in marriage to Jerry Anderson. They made their home in Independence, Iowa where they ran the Anderson Store. The couple later divorced. She was married to Robert Weber on February 14, 1971. Together they operated Rush Park Tavern until their divorce.

Sue had many jobs through the years, the most recent being a CNA at West Village Care Center in Independence for 13 years. She loved researching Genealogy, making crafts and cards. She enjoyed spending time with her family and cherished the long drives and lunches with her dear friend Helen. Sue will be remembered for her quick wit and never ending humor.

Surviving are four children; Daniel Anderson, Florida, Chris (Doug) Wubben, Independence, IA., Cathy (Phil) Clark, Zillah, WA., Deana (Wade) Miller, Independence, IA., eight grandchildren; Tanya (John) Greiner, Samantha Stelter, Jared Wubben, Erica Wubben, Katelynn, Nicholas, Zach, and Jaxon Miller, four great grandchildren, and a brother; Kim Morris, Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother; Jerry Morris, and her precious grandson; Lucas Michael Clark.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Monday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, IA. where friends may call from 10 A.M. till services Monday. Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery , Independence.
