Lyle D. Riggle

Lyle D. Riggle, 67, died Monday morning, June 6, 2011, at his home in Independence, Iowa

Lyle was born on December 16, 1943, in Brandon, Iowa the son of Leroy and Helen (Rosell) Riggle. On February 23, 1961 he enlisted in the United States Navy and was honorable discharged in 1967He married Cindy Strottman on January 21, 1974. Cindy later passed away on February 1, 2001. In 2007 he married Dixie Stanek. Lyle owned and operated the Friendly Farmers bar in Brandon, IA for 26 years, and enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Dixie, four children; John (Cassandra) Riggle, VA., Tammy Kruckenberg, Waterloo, IA., Rorry Riggle, LaPorte City IA., Heather (Jim) Johnson, Vinton, IA., nine grandchildren, one great grandchildren, two sisters; Barb Larson, LaPorte City, IA., Betty Young, Brandon, IA.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, first wife; Cindy (Strottman) Riggle, and a brother, Jud Riggle.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, June 10, 2011 at the Brandon Cemetery , Brandon, IA.

Louis F. Alessio, Jr

Louis F. Alessio, Jr., of Independence, Iowa and formerly of Oelwein and Camanche, Iowa died Wednesday evening, June 1, 2011 at the West Village Care Center, Independence, Iowa

Louis was born on June 23, 1924, in Oelwein, Iowa the youngest of ten children of Italian immigrants, Luigi and Theresa (Paletti) Alessio. He graduated from the Oelwein High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving with the Seabee’s in Okinawa, Japan during WW II. Following his discharge he was married to Evelyn (Lane) Kopecky, three children were born of this union, Jacqueline, Nancy, and Tim. The couple later divorced. While living in Cedar Rapids, Iowa Louis attended night school to become a journeyman plumber and pipefitter. He became employed with various companies prior to his retirement. In 1973 he was married to Edith Bruggenwirth. They resided in Camanche, Iowa for 36 years, and were a member of the Church of the Visitation Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Camanche VFW. In 2005 he moved to Clinton, Iowa, and following the death of his wife Edith in 2009 Louis moved to Independence, Iowa.

He is survived by his three children; Jacqueline (Chris) Smith, Las Vegas, NV., Nancy Alessio, Independence, IA., and Tim (Nancy) Alessio, Lehigh, Fl., seven grandchildren; Tammi Robson, Waterloo, IA., Rhett Robson, Julie (Brian) Guinan, and Ryan (Lisa) Robson, all of Hesperia, CA., Bridget (James) Joyce, Walker, IA., Jennifer Kolthoff, Independence, IA., and Matt (Emily) Sherrets, Quasqueton, IA., ten grandchildren, twenty four great grandchildren, eighteen great great grandchildren, a sister-in-law; Mary Alessio, Oelwein, IA., and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Edith in 2009, three sisters; Philomena Rubino, Victoria Randles, and Mary Morici, and six brothers; Joseph, John, Dominic, Frederick, Anthony, and Charles Alessio.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, June 6, 2011 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, Iowa with Rev. Aloysius J. Vorwald officiating, with inurnment in Woodlawn Cemetery , Oelwein, Iowa at 11 A.M. Tuesday, with graveside military honors. Friends may call from 3 to 5 P.M. Sunday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, Iowa where a rosary will be recited at 3 P.M. Sunday.

Sharon Ann McGlaughlin

Sharon Ann McGlaughlin, 64, of Independence, died Monday, May 23 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Sharon was born on July 201946 in Waterloo, IA; daughter of Donald and Lavine (Duggan) Klein. She graduated from Orange Township High School in 1964. She married Richard McGlaughlin on May 27, 1972, in Jesup, IA. She was employed at Wal-Mart in independence, IA for 24 years as a cashier.

She survived by her husband Richard, and their little dog Bobby Jo; two sisters Sandra (Jim) Sider, Dysart, IA, and Donna (Jim) Boleyn, Waterloo, IA; two brothers, Bill Klein of Phoenix, AZ, and Tim (Barbara) Klein, Waterloo, IA; four nieces and six nephews; and nineteen great nieces and nephews, and two very special friends, Annie Walker and Mona Stone.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She Loved the love of her life, her husband, Richard, her sisters and brothers and all of her nieces and nephews; and her many co-workers and customers at Wal-Mart; and enjoyed her many plants and flowers.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, IA. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Thursday, and 8 to 10 A.M. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA. Burial will be in the Littleton Cemetery , Littleton, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Daniel C. Lange

Daniel C. Lange, 60 of Oelwein, Iowa and formerly of Independence, Iowa died Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, Iowa

Dan was born on January 21, 1951, in Independence, Iowa the son of Henry W. and Vivian V. (Hester) Lange. He attended the Independence Schools and entered the U.S. Navy on November 18, 1970 serving until his discharge on January 31, 1991. Upon his discharge he returned to the Independence area and became employed with Iowa Ham, and Geater Machining in Independence. In 2005 the couple moved to Oelwein, Iowa and Dan became employed as a mechanic with the Avalon Tire and Service Center in Oelwein.

He is survived by his wife Sandra A. Lange, Oelwein, Iowa, a son Dan (Tava) Lange, San Antonio, TX., five grandchildren, two sisters; Judith (Darrell) Phelps, Rodgers, AR., Emily (David) Phelps, Anamosa, IA. and a brothers; Neil (Marilyn) Lange, Omaha, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Derrik Lange in 1989, and a brother; George Lange.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, May 21, 2011 at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence with Rev. John Sheda officiating. Burial will be at Sea in the Pacific Ocean at a later date. Friends may call from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home where a military memorial service will be held at 7 P.M. Friday.

Francis E. Zuck

Francis E. Zuck, 83, of Independence, Iowa died Sunday afternoon, May 15, 2011 at the Windsor Nursing & Rehab Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Francis was born on January 21, 1928, in Elkton, South Dakota the son of Earl and Nela (Anderson) Zuck. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served with great pride until his discharge in 1947. Following his discharge he moved to the Independence, IA area where he became employed as a truck driver for the Nash Finch Company for twenty five years prior to his retirement.

He is survived by four children, Linda Trumblee, Rowley, IA; Bev Lehs, Randallia, IA; Jim Zuck; Oelwein, IA. and Tim Brickman, Harpers Ferry, IA., Twelve grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and two sisters Shirley Buznski, Fairbank, IA; and Judy Price, Independence, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Rodney J. Zuck, a brother Merle Zuck, and a sister Pat Hayward.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence where friends may call from 10:00 A.M. till services Wednesday. Burial will be in the Midway Cemetery , Midway, Iowa.

Robert E. Garrelts

Robert E. Garrelts, 80, of Independence, IA., died Sunday evening, May 1, 2011, East Towne Care Center, Independence, Iowa.

Bob was born on December 2, 1930, in Charles City, Iowa the son of Edward H. and Annetta (Evans) Garrelts, he moved with his family to the Gilbertville and Jesup, Iowa area and graduated from Jesup High School. He was married to Donna E. Kremer, on May 1, 1952 in Independence where the couple made their home. Bob owned and operated the Garrelts Garage in Independence from 1964 thru 1978 following which he was employed with Dunlap Auto and VanDenBerg Chevrolet until his retirement in 1986.

He is survived by a daughter Susan Garrelts, Minneapolis, MN., a son; David (Patty) Garrelts, Mt. Vernon, IA., three grandchildren; Colin Garrelts, Ashley Garrelts, and Nicholas Garrelts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Donna E. Garrelts on February 2, 2009, a son; James Alan Garrelts in 1952, and a brother Glen Garrelts.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 A.M. Thursday, May 5, 2011 at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, Iowa with Rev. Bob Solon, officiating. Burial will be held in the Mt. Hope Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 5 to 7 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mark A. Little

Mark A. Little, 48, of Independence died Thursday, April 21, 2011 at his home in Independence, Iowa

Mark was born on April 15, 1963 in Manchester, Iowa the son of Calvin D. and H. Callista (Cramer) Little. He was raised in the Delhi, Iowa area, and received his Auto Body Technician Certificate from Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids, IA. He was married to Mary J. Heims on June 6, 1984 in Delhi, Iowa the couple resided in Independence where Mark was employed with Hill Top Motors and most recently with Hunter’s Auto in Independence.

He is survived by a son; Chase (Allyson) Little, Independence, two grandchildren, and three brothers; Craig Little, Independence, Iowa, Kyle Little, Guttenberg, Iowa, and Scott Little, Tallahassee, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary in 2008, and a brother Chris Little.

Memorial services will be held at 7 pm Friday, April 29, 2011 at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence with Rev. Bill Black officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date St. John’s Catholic Cemetery , Delhi, IA. Friends may call from 4 pm to services Friday at the funeral home.

Peter J. Hansen

INDEPENDENCE– Peter J. Hansen, 86, of Independence, Iowa died Wednesday morning, April 20, 2011, at the West Village Care Center in Independence, Iowa.

Peter was born on April 6, 1925, in Winthrop, Iowa the son Thorvald and Phoebe (Booth) Hansen. He attended the Winthrop Schools. He was employed with Rapids Chevrolet in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for 34 years prior to his retirement in 1982.

He is survived by a sister Anna Hansen of Rowley, IA, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Jim and Bud Hansen, and a sister Velma Hansen.

Graveside services were held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 23, 2011; at the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery , Independence, Iowa.

Edmund F. Tabor

Edmund F. Tabor, 88, of Independence, Iowa, died Monday, April 11, 2011, at the Buchanan County Health Center, Independence, Iowa.

Ed was born on December 31, 1922, in Independence, Iowa the son of Harold J. and Mabel (Houck) Tabor. He was a 1940 graduate of the Independence High School, and a 1942 graduate of the Independence Junior College. On July 20, 1942 he enlisted in the U,.S. Army serving as a sergeant until his discharge in 1948. Following his discharge he enrolled at the University of Iowa receiving his BS Degree in Commerce in 1948. On August 20, 1955 he was united in marriage to Geraldine E. Welsh, and the couple made their home in Independence where Ed became employed with the Independence Federal Bank For Savings serving as president for 20 years prior to his retirement in 1987.

He was a member of the Independence Lions Club, the Independence Rotary Club, served on the board of the Wapsipinicon Golf Club, the Independence Public Library, and Iowa Ham.

Ed was an avid reader and golfer being the Wapsipinicon Golf Club Champion in 1941, he enjoyed playing Bridge, and listening to music.

He is survived by his wife Geraldine, a son; Byron (Julie) Tabor, Cedar Rapids, IA., a daughter; Paula Gerstenkorn, Waterloo, IA., and a grandson; Dale Gerstenkorn, Jr., Waterloo, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister; Elizabeth Plank, and a brother; Charles Tabor.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, April 14, 2011 at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, Iowa with Rev. Sue Ann Raymond officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM Wednesday, with a military memorial service at 7 PM, and from 8 Am till services Thursday at the funeral home.

Jay A. Postel

Jay A. Postel, 25, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and formerly of Independence, Iowa died Friday at his home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Jay was born on October 30, 1985, in Independence, Iowa the son of Gregory J. and Donna K. (Sherrets) Postel. He graduated from the Independence High School and was employed with the A.P.A.C Company in Cedar Rapids.

He is survived by his parents; Greg Postel, Independence, Iowa and Donna Postel, Sioux City, IA., a sister; Jennifer (Mike) Hansen, Walker, IA., a niece Abby Hansen and a nephew, Owen Hansen, and his maternal grandparents; Donald & Georgia Sherrets, Independence, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence with Rev. Scott Meador officiating. Burial: Fairview Cemetery , Winthrop, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, and from 9 A.M. till services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Judy K. Baumgartner

Judy K. Baumgartner, 56, of Independence, Iowa died Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at her home in Independence following a long illness.

Judy was born on November 11, 1954, in Waterloo, Iowa the daughter of Arthur R. and Maxyne I. (Taylor) Kitner. She was a 1973 graduate of the Independence High School and graduated from Des Moines Area Community College, Ankeny, Iowa. Following her graduation she became employed with John Deere Company in Waterloo, Iowa. On July 22, 1978 she married to Ronald F. Baumgartner in Gilbertville, Iowa. The couple resided in Gilbertville prior to moving to Independence in 1988

Judy is survived by her husband, Ron Baumgartner, Independence, IA., a son Jim (Cathryn) Baumgartner, and grandson Kaden of Waverly, IA. Her mother; Maxyne Kitner, Independence, IA., two sisters; Cody Cajthaml, Albuquerque, MN, Rita (LeRoy) Barnhart, Edgewood, IA., and two brothers; John (Cathy) Kitner and Paul (Barb) Kitner, Independence, IA.

She was preceded in death by her father; Art Kitner, daughter Jennifer Ann Baumgartner, and grandmother Ora Diehl.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Saturday April 9, 2011 at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, where friends may call from 12 Noon till services. Private inurnment services will be held at the Littleton Cemetery , Littleton, Iowa.
