George W. Johnston

George W. Johnston, 73, of Independence, Iowa died Tuesday morning, December 14, 2010 at his home near Independence, Iowa.

George was born on March 6, 1937, near Troy Mills, Iowa the son of Andrew and Ruth (Peyton) Johnston. He attended the Troy Mills Schools, and was united in marriage to Josephine “JoAnn” Fuessley on June 24, 1956 in Troy Mills, Iowa. George farmed in the Quasqueton area, and was employed by Rowley Equipment, Rowley, Iowa for 35 years, prior to his retirement in 1997. George also did carpentry work, and was a long time member of the Quasqueton Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife JoAnn, a daughter; Sue Spece, Independence, IA. three grandchildren; Josh Spece, Jackie (Jim) Heinz, and Jacob Spece, and three sisters; Yvonna Gericke, Quasqueton, Iowa, Betty (John) Cannon, Rowley, Iowa and Janet (Jack) Franck, Independence, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother in infancy

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence where friends may call from 2 to 8 P.M. Thursday. Burial will be in the Troy Mills Cemetery , Troy Mills, Iowa.

Margaret J. Michael

Margaret J. Michael, 94, of Independence, Iowa and formerly of the Brandon, Iowa area died Sunday evening, December 12, 2010 at the Buchanan County Long Term Care Center, Independence, Iowa.

Margaret was born on April 21, 1916, in Watkins, Iowa the daughter of William and Mary (Delaney) Schmidt. She graduated from the Norway High School and was united in marriage to Joe J. Michael on October 29, 1946 in Watkins, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Monti Area until moving to a farm near Brandon, Iowa in 1959.

She is survived by three children; Jolene Groff, Fairfax, IA., Karen Michael, Cedar Rapids, IA., and Ronald Michael, Las Vegas, NV., eleven grandchildren, twenty six great grandchildren, and two sisters; Anna Mae Ward, Belle Plaine, IA., and Alice McElliott, Manchester, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joe in 1988, two daughters; Mary Michael in 1991, and Carol Gienapp in 2007, two sisters; Delores Becker and Lois Stramer, and four brothers; Clarence, Bill, Allen, and Bob Schmidt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, December 17, 2010 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, IA. Friends may call from 2 to 8 P.M. Thursday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence where a rosary will be recited at 3 P.M. and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 P.M. Thursday.

Alvin N. Brustkern

Alvin N. Brustkern, 90, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and formerly of Independence and Rowley, Iowa died Wednesday evening, December 8, 2010 at the Hallmar Nursing Home in Cedar Rapids, Ia.

Alvin was born on October 4, 1920, in Eagle Center, Iowa the son of Peter and Elizabeth (Klein) Brustkern. He was united in marriage to Lois L. Klinger on February 22, 1941 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Waterloo, Iowa. The couple farmed south of Waterloo, Iowa for five years prior to moving to a farm near Rowley, Iowa, and then moving into Independence in 1987.

He is survived by three sons; David of Des Moines, Iowa, Alvin of Morrison, Illinois, and Tim (Pam) Brustkern of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, three grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. two sisters; Marguerite Wilharm, Waterloo, IA., and Marjorie Schwickerath, Waterloo, IA., and three brothers; Leo Brustkern, and Garold Brustkern, LaPorte City, IA., and Peter Brustkern, Gilbertville, IA., and many nieces and nephews, especially Jim Brust.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lois in 2003, a sister Marie Thiry and a brother Melvin Brustkern.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, IA., with Rev. Paul McManus officiating. Burial will be in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 3 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home in Independence where a rosary will be recited at 3 P.M. parish vigil service will be held at 7 P.M. Friday.

Larry V. Cassaday

Larry V. Cassaday, 78, of Independence, Iowa, died Monday afternoon, December 6, 2010, at his home in Independence following a short illness.

He was born on November 2, 1932, in Des Moines, Iowa the son of Harold V. and Orel K. (Griffith) Cassaday. He graduated from the North High School in Des Moines and attended Ottawa University, Ottawa, Kansas. On November 8, 1953 he was united in marriage to Phyllis E. Miller in the First Baptist Church, Des Moines, Iowa. He entered the U.S. Army on November, 1953 serving until his discharge in 1955. Upon his discharge Larry worked in the refrigeration business with his father. In 1965 Larry formed a partnership with Don Taylor and started Midwest Refrigeration in Independence, Iowa operating it until 2000.

Every since his first canoe trip at the age of 16 to the Boundary Waters, to fishing with his best friend Dave Berard in Northern Minnesota, Canada, and the Hudson Bay areas, and spending every weekend on his house boat docked on the Mississippi River at Guttenberg, Iowa Larry loved to be on the water.

Most important in Larry’s life was his wife Phyllis, his children, grandchildren, and friends. His greatest pleasure was to have family close and to make wonderful memories, especially those on the water. He was a generous man in both work and play. He would want all of us to stay strong and celebrate the great life he had.

He was a member of the Urbandale Volunteer Fire Department, Urbandale, Iowa, the Buchanan County Health Trust, serving as president, the Independence Chamber of Commerce, the Elks Club, the 611 Yacht Club, and the Iowa Grocery Association. He was active in the Republican Party and served on the Congressional Selection Board for the Military Academy.

He is survived by his wife Phyllis Cassaday, Independence, Iowa, four children; Steve Cassaday, Independence, Iowa, Tina Thompson, Maxwell, Iowa, Doug (Carol) Cassaday, and Heidi (Kevin) Tudor, Independence, Iowa. Five Grandchildren; Jake Thompson, Cassidi Thompson, Brooke Cassaday, Brittany Cassaday, and Chloe Tudor, and two great grandchildren; Marlo and Eva Thompson, and Jake the dog.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother Blache Cassaday, and a son-in-law Keith Thompson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, December 10th, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence with Rev. Scott Meador officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery , Independence with Kevin Tudor, Craig Book, Jake Thompson, Elliott Reed, Charles Bergman, and Joel Wickner serving as casket bearers. Friends may call from 2 to 8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home where a military memorial service will be conducted at 7 P.M. Thursday.

Dorothy M. Bumsted

Dorothy M. Bumsted,83, of Independence, Iowa died Friday evening, April 13, 2007 at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence following a sudden illness.

Dorothy was born on December 9, 1923 in Beaman, Iowa the daughter of Roy E. and Gertie M. (Bockes) Leohr. She was a 1942 graduate of the Grundy Center High School, Grundy Center, Iowa and was united into marriage to Edward L. Bumsted on September 24, 1948. The couple resided in Des Moines, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa until the death of her husband Edward in 1955 at which time they came to Independence, IA. She was employed with the Gala Ballroom, the Independence Bakery, and Malone Creek Estate prior to her retirement in 1986.

Dorothy enjoyed gardening, her sons and her grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons; Darrel (Darlene) Bumsted, Independence, IA., and Myron (Lori) Bumsted, Macks Creek, MO., seven grandchildren; Candace (Bumsted) Kremer, Chad Bumsted, Charissa (Bumsted) Strickell, Christopher Bumsted, Clint Bumsted, Austen Bumsted, Amanda Bumsted, and six great grandchildren; Faith Kremer, Brody Kremer, T.J. Kremer, Eian Bumsted, Melissa Bumsted, Adrian Bumsted, and a brother; Leslie Leohr, Winthrop, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Reiff Funeral & Crematory in Independence with burial at 3:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Rosehill Cemetery , Grundy Center, IA. Friends may call from 6 to 8 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.

John W. Kidd

John W. Kidd, 74, of Independence, Iowa died Tuesday evening, December 26, 2006 at his home in Independence following a short illness.

John was born on August 28, 1932 in Buchanan County, Iowa the son of James and Emma (Howland) Kidd. He was a 1950 graduate of the Independence High School, and served in the U.S. Army. On December 25, 1957 he was united into marriage to Lois M. Martin, and the couple made their home in Independence. John was employed as a truck driver with Jensen Transport in Independence prior to becoming self employed. Following his retirement he drove part time for Bachman Tool & Die Company in Independence.

He is survived by his wife Lois, two sons; Rodney (Beth) Wilson of Nashua, IA., James J. (Marilyn) Kidd, Marshalltown, IA., four grandchildren; Jade Wilson, Julie Kidd, Jon Kidd, and Lynsey Wilson, and two sisters; Jean Gilbert, Johnston, IA., and Carol Haight, Independence, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers; Jim, Donnie, Kenny, and Merle Kidd.

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence where friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, and from 9 AM till services Saturday.
Burial will be in the Wilson Cemetery , Independence, IA.

John R. Beck

John R. Beck, 51, of Independence, Iowa died Tuesday afternoon, November 23, 2010 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa following a short illness.

John was born on August 27, 1959, in Independence, Iowa the son of Raymond and Raydell (Sweat) Beck. He attended the Independence Schools and was employed with Edgeton’s Sanitation Service, Independence, IA., and Triangle Plastic, Winthrop, IA.

He is survived by two children; Belinda Beck, Independence, IA., and John Beck, Jr., Oelwein, IA., tree step-daughters; Carrie Reed, Heidi Long, and Amy Cole all of Independence, IA., eleven grandchildren, His life partner, Lila, five sisters; Julie Spece, Independence, IA., Liza Moreno, Sterling, IL., Mary Benton, Independence, IA, Nancy Beck, Sterling, IL., and Ruth Lynn, Independence, IA., and a brother; Ronald Beck, Oelwein, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Monday, November 29, 2010, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, IA., with Rev. Robert Solon officiating. Burial will be in the Wilson Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 11 A.M. to services Monday at the funeral home.

Judi Rose Christensen

Judi Rose Christensen, 57, of Independence, Iowa and formerly of Waterloo, Iowa died Sunday morning, November 7, 2010 at her home in Independence following a short illness with Pancreatic Cancer.

Judi was born on October 23, 1953, in Waterloo, Iowa the daughter of Russell J. and Kay Rose (Dausner) Anderson. She was a 1971 graduate of East High School, Waterloo, IA. She received an L.P.N. degree from Hawkeye Technical Institute, Waterloo, IA., in 1976. She was employed as an emergency room nurse with Schoitz Hospital in Waterloo, IA. She was married to Dean R. Christensen on July 19, 1982 in Waterloo, Iowa. The couple made their home in the Ft. Worth, Texas area. Judi was employed with the Northeast Hospital in Ft. Worth, TX.

She loved spending time with her family especially at family game and movie nights, and she loved to work on puzzel books, and computer games.

Judi is survived by three children; Kym McCann, San Diego, CA., Melissa Branham, Ft. Worth, TX., and Scott Christensen, Burleson, TX., eight grandchildren, her mother; Kay Rose Anderson, Independence, IA., and a brother; Scott Anderson, Brandon, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her father Russell Anderson, her husband Dean Christensen in 2008, and a brother Ted Anderson.

Funeral services will be held at 7 P.M., Wednesday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, where friends may call from 4 P.M. till services. Burial will be at 4 P.M. Friday, November 12, 2010 in the Greenwood Cemetery , Ft. Worth, TX.

Leo John Mulford

Leo John Mulford, 89, of Aurora, Iowa died Thursday morning, November 4, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a short illness.

Leo was born on June 7, 1921, at Westgate, Iowa the son of Frank and Helen (Cook) Mulford. He graduated from the Rowley High School with the class of 1938. On September 9, 1945 he was married to Burnita Schweitzer at the Methodist Church in Independence, Iowa. Leo served with the U.S. Marine Corps 12th Defense Battalion as an anti-aircraft gunner for 38 months in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

He and Burnita started farming the family farm in 1945, lived there 65 years. He also served as a A.S.C. Committee member for 20 years. Leo was a member of the Aurora American Legion Post No. 435, Aurora, Iowa. He enjoyed his family, farming, fishing, and playing cards.

He is survived by four children; Bruce (Rita) Mulford, Solon, IA, Barbara Mulford, Nantucket, MA., Rosa Lea (Joe) Reese, Forth Worth, TX., and Lauraine Harding, Ely, IA., eleven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and two sisters; Rozella Morgan, Golden Valley, MN., and Neva Mae Arnold, Independence, IA., and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Burnita in 2005, a sister; Mary Stiles and two brothers Dean and Dale Mulford.

Memorial services will be held at 2 P.M. Sunday, November 7, 2010, at the Reiff Funeral

Richard K. "Dick” Jamason,

Richard K. "Dick” Jamason, 69 of Fernandina Beach, Florida and formerly of Independence, Iowa died Thursday September 23, 2010 at Baptist Medical Center-Nassau, Florida.

Richard was born on June 8, 1941 in Independence, Iowa the son of Donald J. and Evelyn M. (Kies) Jamason. He attended the St. John’s Catholic High School, Independence, IA., and graduated from Würzburg American High School in Würzburg, Germany. He dedicated his life’s career to the United States Military entering the service on November 18, 1968 and serving his country as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War and later as a boom operator, refueling aircraft until his retirement on September 30, 1985. He obtained the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4, and was a Master Army Aviator. He received the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. Upon his honorable discharge he resided in Savannah, Georgia where he was employed with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources at Ft. Pulaski National Park on Tybee Island, and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. In 1995 he moved to Fernandina Beach, Florida where he was a member of the V.F.W. Post #4351. He was also a lifetime member of the Order of the Purple Heart.

He is survived by his brother, Dennis Jamason, Fernandina Beach, Fl., and a sister Deb Koza, Lakewood, CA. and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters; Beverly Glovik, Margie Sutter, and Carol Jamason.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Saturday October 23, 2010 at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence with Sharon Bainbridge officiating. Inurnment will be held in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery , Independence. Friends may call from 12 Noon till services Saturday at the funeral home.
