Fred Pippert
Fred Pippert was born March 7, 1934 at rural Garrison to Walter and Dora Pippert. He attended school in Dysart and Garrison, graduating from Garrison High School in 1952. After high school, he served his country for three years in the Marine Corps, stationed in Korea. On May 24, 1954, he married Doris Ferguson at Brandon, IA. Fred was on the Vinton police force for four years before becoming a mail carrier in 1962. Following his retirement from the Postal Service in 1990, Fred enjoyed his parttime job as a groundskeeper at the Vinton County Club for several years. He was a longtime member of the VFW and the Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post in Vinton. Fred had been diagnosed with ALS and his death came peacefully at his home with his family around him on July 27, 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Edward. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Doris, of Vinton, one son, Ron and wife, Mimi, and grandchildren, Cameron and Kayla, Napa, CA, four brothers, Ned Pippert and wife, Shirley, Carl Pippert and wife, Doris, Dale Pippert, all of Vinton and David Roseberg and wife, Holly, Columbia MO, two sisters, Carole Ann Salger and husband, Marion, Vinton, and Rosemary Billlings and husband, Dennis, Keller, TX, and several nieces and nephews.

Gerald Simpson
Gerald W. Simpson, Sr, known as Gerry to family and friends, was born on September 12, 1931 in Waterloo, the son of Oren E. & Bertha M. (Burgess) Simpson. He was united in marriage to Gertrude McDonald Gruver on May 16, 1953 in the “Little Brown Church” in Nashua. Gerry served his country in the US Navy as a Fire Control 2nd Class during the Korean Conflict. He had been employed for 34 years at Rath Packing before his retirement. During his spare time Gerry enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening, and was a very patriotic. Gerry passed away at the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo on Thursday, July 25, 2002 at the age of 70 years. He is survived by 2 sons; Gerry, Jr. of Waterloo, Scot and his wife Jan of Waverly, 1 daughter, Chris and her husband Don Ames of Washburn, 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 1 brother; Oren H. Simpson of Waterloo, 1 sister; Betty McCaffery of Cedar Falls. Gerry was preceded in death by his parents, wife Gertrude on October 18, 1996, 1 daughter; Anna Simpson, 1 grandson; Jeremy Simpson, and 1 sister; Alyce Ludolph. He will be deeply missed.

Gerald Payne
Gerald Howard Payne was born on November 23, 1942 in Iberia, Missouri, the son of Rufus & Gertrude (Keeth) Payne. Gerald was raised and received his education in the community of Waterloo, and he worked in Waterloo for many years as an iron worker, taking on positions as companies hired him for his iron working talents. In his spare time you could generally find him either fishing or hunting with his buddies. Gerald was a veteran and served his country with a tour of duty during the Vietnam War with the US Army. Recently Gerald was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, and he died peacefully at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home on Saturday, July 27, 2002 at the age of 59 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 brothers; Bill & Glen. Gerald is survived by 1 son and his wife; Brett & Lisa Payne of Waterloo, 1 daughter and her husband; Deborah & Craig Luck of Deerwood, Minnesota, 1 step son and his wife; Jon & Jodi Trentz of Waterloo, 1 step daughter and her husband: Lisa & Tony Kerr of Waterloo, 2 brothers and their spouses; Bob & Paulette of Waterloo, and John & Marline of Lansing, 3 grandchildren and 3 step grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.

Wayne Gulick
Wayne "Peck" Clarence Gulick was born January 18, 1919 in Dunnell, MN, to Frank and Pearl Jones Gulick. When Wayne was one year old his parents moved to the farm near Mt. Auburn where he lived and farmed his entire life, until recently when he moved to the Virginia Gay Annex. He attended school in Mt. Auburn, graduating with the class of 1936. On February 18, 1942, he married Jeanne Kephart at Vinton. Wayne enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter--of geese, ducks and mushrooms. He was a longtime director of the local Izaak Walton League. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and grandson, Tracy Halva. Wayne is survived by his wife of sixty years, Jeanne, of Vinton, two daughters, Kathy Root and husband, Carlton, Vinton, Karen Halva and husband, Gary, West Union, IA, two brothers, Keith Gulick and wife, Bonnie, Vinton, Elvin Gulick and wife, Adelyne, Venice, FL, two sisters, Frances Thompson, Park Rapids, MN, LaVon Perkins, CA, five grandchildren, Debbie Madorin and husband, Mitch, Brett Root and fiance, Sue Smith, and Jodi Geiger and husband, Mike, all of Vinton, Kerry Cash and husband, Bill, Des Moines, IA, Jessica Halva, Chandler, AZ, eight great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Charles Werner
Charles Frederick Werner, Jr., known as Chuck to family and friends, was born on January 21, 1946 in Waterloo; the son of Charles Frederick, Sr. & Zona (Wollenberg Wilcox) Werner. Chuck was raised in Waterloo and was a graduate of the West High School. Following his high school education he received a Bachelors of Arts from St. Olaf's College in Minnesota. Chuck joined the US Navy and served state side during the Vietnam War. On August 3, 1968 Chuck married Connie Stroh in Council Bluffs and they later divorced. Over his lifetime Chuck worked as a salesman and owned his own businesses. Chuck passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2002 at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, he was 56 years of age. He was preceded in death by his parents. Chuck is survived by 2 daughters; Kirstin and her husband Brian Hill of Des Moines, Libby Boileau of Waterloo, 1 son; Charles (Charlie) Frederick Werner, III, of Waterloo, 1 sister and her husband; Kathryn & Tom Purdon of Tucson, AZ and 1 grand daughter; Hailey Boileau.

Hattie Hook
Hattie Hook was born June 29, 1911 in Reinbeck, Iowa the daughter of Wilhelm and Clara Arp Kroeger. She received her education in country school and on March 22, 1927 Hattie married Glen F. Hook at Waterloo, Iowa. Hattie and Glen made their home farming near Dysart and moved into Dysart in 1973. In addition to raising her family, Hattie enjoyed activities in church circle and playing bridge with her friends. Family was a very important part of her life and she enjoyed frequent visits with grandchildren. Following Glen's death on December 16, 1995 Hattie continued to make her home in Dysart. In recent months she shared time living at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer and her home. On Wednesday, July 31, 2002 Hattie was admitted to Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo where her death came that day at the age of 91 years. She is preceded in death by her husband Glen, one son Leonard in 1951, three brothers and eight sisters. She is survived by one son, Dr. Kenneth Hook and his wife Elizabeth of Albuquerque, New Mexico; two daughters, Marlys and her husband Max Bloom of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Connie and her husband Roger Sash of Omaha, Nebraska; eight grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Melissa Babinat
Melissa Jo Babinat was born on May 9, 1984, the daughter of William and Sandra (Lubbert) Babinat. Melissa received her education at North Tama School at Traer and was a member of the Class of 2003. On August of 2002, Melissa received her diploma at a special graduation ceremony at the North Tama School. Education was important part of Melissa's life and even with her battle with cancer she was an honor student and a member of the National Honor Society. Melissa always had concern for others and on many occasions expressed more concern for others than herself. She was a member of the North Tama Mixed Chorus and enjoyed listening to music. In other free moments she enjoyed spending time with family and friends and was a great fan of World Wrestling. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic church and was thankful for the support of her family, friends, classmates and community. Melissa was a patient at the Hospice Center at Waterloo when her death came on Sunday, September 29, 2002 surrounded by her family at the age of 18 years. She is survived by her parents Bill & Sandy Babinat and her sisters; Jessica, Angela, and Anna all of Clutier. She is also survived by her paternal grandmother, Audrey Babinat of Traer and maternal grandmother, Loretta Lubbert of Gladbrook as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Edith Wander
Edith Gertrude Wander was born on December 8, 1899 in Eden, Iowa; the daughter of John Edwin & Ida (Conner) Alton. Edith was raised in Eden and attended country school. On March 1, 1924 she was united in marriage to Charles Henry Wander and he preceded her in death on July 30, 1953. Over her lifetime Edith was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, taking great care in making sure her family was taken care of. She never liked idle time and had many pastimes, such as crocheting and knitting, that she was very proficient in. Edith enjoyed a long life, her time on this earth ending at the age of 102. She was a patient at the Sartori Hospital in Cedar Falls when she passed away on Saturday, September 28, 2002. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 4 sisters; Rena Mittelstadt, Ida Mittelstadt, Alba Winter, Florence Kist, 4 brothers; George, Richard, Theodore & Fenton Alton. Edith’s memory is cherished by her 2 daughters; Shirley Ann Newsom of Evansdale, Dorothy May Kleppe of Waterloo, 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Cheryl Regina Close
Cheryl Regina Close, 58, of Cedar Rapids, and formerly of Vinton, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, following a brief illness. Cheryl was born August 12, 1944, in Vinton, Iowa to Earl and Luella (Jacobsen) Biram. She married Ronald Close on December 5, 1964, in Vinton. Cheryl graduated from Washington High School in 1963 and then attended cosmetology school in Cedar Rapids. Cheryl was a very caring homemaker, taking care of foster children for many years in her home. Her family was very important to her, especially her grandchildren. She also worked for a time at the Wapsie Valley Creamery in Independence in the early 1970’s. Cheryl attended Central Assembly of God Church in Cedar Rapids. Cheryl is survived by her husband, Ronald, of Cedar Rapids; five sons, David and wife Cheryl of Independence, Dean and wife Valerie of Washington, Iowa, Kevin and wife Caroline of Independence, Steve and wife Barb of Cedar Rapids, and Andrew of Cedar Rapids; one daughter, Nerme Close of Cedar Rapids, 18 grandchildren; one sister, June Greaser and husband Ray of Vinton; and one sister-in-law, Carol Biram of Vinton. She was preceded in death by her parents; one granddaughter Vanessa Close,one brother, Richard Biram and her mother-in-law Hazel Close.

June Schulte
June Lucille Schulte was born on April 9, 1925, in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, the daughter of Alexander and Vivian (Matthews) Jasin. She received her education in Chagrin Falls, graduating from Orange High School. June then attended Baldin-Wallace Conservatory of Music and continued on at Defiance College, finishing her degree. She began playing the organ at age 6 with her first job as organist at age 12. She married Grover Clayton Schulte in Cleveland, Ohio. They moved around a great deal due to Grover’s funeral home business. After they divorced, June taught K-12 music for 17 years in the Fairview Schools in Ohio. In 1976, June moved to Vinton to become Christian Educator and Music Director at the Presbyterian Church. June and her daughter Sharen then moved to La Cross, WI., to minister there before returning to Vinton and June served at the First Christian Church as pre-school teacher and Christian Education Director. June retired due to poor health and has been cared for by her daughter Sharen over the past years. More recently June has been a resident at Virginia Gay Annex in Vinton where her death came on Thursday evening, October 3, 2002, at the age of 77 years. She was a member of Community Redeemer Church in Shellsburg, and also had membership in the music boosters, Future Teachers Association, Order of Eastern Star and the Parent Teachers Association. June was preceded in death by her parents and a son Grover Alexander in 1999. She is survived by her twin daughters, Karen Martin and Sharen Schulte, both of Vinton and Cheryl Gregor of Akron, OH., 7 grandchildren, Tammy, Randy, Shawn, Chad, Nicole, Michael, and Jason, several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Alice Hilda Boldt Force
Alice Hilda Boldt Force was born on October 1, 1909 in Tama County, Iowa, the daughter of Herman & Augusta (Eichmeier) Boldt. Alice was raised in Tama County and married Albert C. Nielson, they later divorced. She then married Harold Force and he preceded her in death in 1966. Alice then united in marriage to Clessie Force, Harold's brother, and he preceded her in death in 1983. In her spare time Alice enjoyed traveling, fishing, crafts, sewing and crossword puzzles. She sewed lap robes for the Veterans at the Veteran Hospital in Iowa City for 17 years. Alice loved her family, especially the grandchildren. Alice passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at the Western Home Communities ' Martin Center in Cedar Falls at the age of 93. She is survived by 3 sons and their spouses; Albert E. & Betty Nielson, Donald L. & Barbara Nielson all of Cedar Falls, Robert L. & Joan Nielson of Waterloo, 1 daughter; Darlene L. Bristow of Waterloo, 21 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, 2 brothers; Clarence & Edward Boldt, 1 grandson, 1 granddaughter, 1 great granddaughter, 1 son-in-law; Milton B. Bristow. She will be greatly missed.

Lucille Lutz
Lucille Martha Lutz was born on October 10, 1921, at Dysart, Iowa; the daughter of Albert and Minnie C. (Bahr) Lutz. Lucille grew up on the family farm and attended country school in Benton County. After completing her education, she helped on the farm and then worked at Shockley photography in Vinton. Lucille then worked at Wilson Foods in Cedar Rapids for 28 years. Lucille retired on November 1, 1983. She made her home in Vinton and more recently had been a patient at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City after complications from a fall. She passed away on Saturday, October 05, 2002, at the age of 80 years. Lucille was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Vinton for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Vernon in infancy. She is survived by her brother, Melvin (Lola) Lutz of Vinton, 2 nieces, Rebecca Lutz of Vinton and Kathleen (Dr. David) Dzewaltowski of Manhattan, KS, a great niece Chelsea Dzewaltowski, a great nephew Alex Dzewaltowski, and Lucille’s special family Rev. Dr. Dennis E. Morey and family of Oskaloosa.

Elizabeth Murray
Elizabeth Donna Murray was born on October 23, 1912 in Fayette County, Iowa, the daughter of John & Nellie (Coates) Jarchow. On July 14, 1940 Elizabeth was united in marriage to Clarence Murray in Maynard, Iowa. Clarence preceded her in death on May 23, 1973. Elizabeth was employed at Hinson Manufacturing, retiring in 1975 after 28 years with the company. Elizabeth passed away on Sunday evening, October 6, 2002 at the age of 90 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 4 brothers, Walter Jarchow, Paul Jarchow, Dale Jarchow & Raymond Jarchow, 4 sisters, Iona Schnor, Pauline King & 2 sisters in infancy. She is survived by a sister Edna (Harold) Tellin of Cedar Rapids and several nieces and nephews.
