Marlin Lee Olson
Memorial services for Marlin Lee Olson were held January 13, 2004, at the Advent Christian Church in Villisca, IA. Marlin was born to Leonard and Pauline Olson on October 14, 1951, in Red Oak, IA.
Marlin spent most of his childhood in the Villisca area. He attended school in Villisca and graduated high school in 1969. Marlin married Linda Lindberg in 1971 and to this union three children were born, April, Brent and Craig. Later he married Laura Woods.
Marlin worked for the Phillips 66 station in Villisca and Des Moines. He returned to the Red Oak area and worked for Uniroyal and Parker Hannifan until he suffered a heart attack and moved to Sugarland, TX, in November 1994. Marlin received a heart transplant in August 2000.
He is survived by three children, April Olson and Brent Olson of Red Oak, and Craig Olson of Sugarland, TX; one grandson, Dylan Olson, of Villisca; a brother Bernard Olson and wife Carolyn of College Springs, IA; and a sister, Roseann Johnston and husband Dewaine of New Mexico.
Frances Shadden
A memorial service for Frances Shadden of Villisca, IA, will be held Friday, January 16, 2003, at 7:30 p.m. at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca, with visitation from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Graveside services will be held at the Cedar Lawn Cemetery
in Council Bluffs, IA, on Saturday, at 11 a.m.
Frances was born on June 11, 1911 to Allen and Bertha (Green) Talcott in Council Bluffs, IA. She died Sunday, January 11, 2004, at the Villisca Good Samaritan Center, where she had been a resident for four years.
Frances attended grade school and high school in Council Bluffs. She was united in marriage to Clay D. Shadden in Logan, IA, in 1928. To this union one son was born, Jack L. Shadden. In 1939, they moved to Nodaway to the Kernen farm. In 1941, they purchased the Howard farm north of Nodaway. They farmed many years until Clay retired.
In 1955, Frances attended Iowa Western Community College, where she earned her LPN degree. They then moved to Tabor, where she worked at the Glenwood State School until she retired.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clay; one sister, Marion Franksen; and three brothers: Eldred Talcott, John Talcott and Donald Talcott. Frances is survived by her son Jack Shadden and wife Donna of Nodaway, IA; grandsons Kelly Shadden and wife Rita of Omaha, NE, and Patrick Shadden and wife Linda of Villisca. Also great grandchildren Spencer Shadden of Omaha, NE, and Jacy and Corey Shadden of Villisca. Plus nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Memorials may be directed to the Villisca Fire and Rescue Departments. Wolfe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Thomas Akin Woodward
Graveside services for Thomas Akin Woodward of Villisca, IA, were held Monday, January 12, 2004, at the Villisca Cemetery
with the Pastor Gordon Scott officiating.
Thomas Akin Woodward as born August 29, 1916, in Villisca to Thomas Parker Woodward and Cora (Maxwell) Woodward. He died Friday, January 9, 2004, at the Villisca Good Samaritan Center, where he had been a resident since July 17, 2003.
Thomas served in the U.S. Army during WWII from September 25, 1942 until February 11, 1946. He worked for Lisle's Corporation in Clarinda for 13 years as a custodian, retiring in May of 1979. He also worked as a custodian for the Villisca Schools.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Max. He is survived by a special friend Dorothy Thomas of Villisca and nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be directed to the Nodaway Methodist Church or the Villisca Senior Citizens Center. Wolfe Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Vernon Lawrence
Visitation for Vernon Lawrence of Villisca, IA, was held Saturday, January 10, 2004, at the Coen-Beaty-Pearson Funeral Home in Corning. Internment of cremated remains will be at the Mt. Zion Cemetery
in Prescott at a later date.
Vernon Lawrence was born April 20, 1931 in Corning, IA, to John and Acta Faye (Pugh) Lawrence. He died January 7, 2004, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, IA.
Vernon married Carmelita Dee Young in Prescott on February 11, 1951. He was a Mason for 40 years, Instruction Lodge #275, Corning; a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Red Oak; and a former member and former president of the Corning Gun Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Carl, Paul and Wesley Lawrence; and one sister, Doris, who died at birth. He is survived by his wife, Carmelita Lawrence, Villisca; a son, Dennis Lawrence, Monroe, IA; and a daughter, Dee (John) Diggs, Glenwood, IA. Brother Charles Lawrence of Corning, IA. Also sis ters-in-law, Iva Lawrence, Corning, and Mary Lawrence-Jones, Missouri. And three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Coen-Beaty-Pearson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Nina Wagaman
Funeral services for Nina Belle Wagaman were held Monday, January 5, 2004, at the Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel in Clarinda with burial in the Villisca Cemetery.
Nina Belle Wagaman was born on December 24, 1930, two and one-half miles south of Eagleville, MO to Clyde and Leota (Craig) Stephens. She died on January 1, 2004, at the Clarinda Regional Health Center in Clarinda, IA.
Nina was a 1950 graduate of Mt. Moriah High School, Mt. Moriah, MO. She met her husband-to-be in Mt. Moriah while he was working there at the time. She married Charles Robert (Bob) Wagaman on May 3, 1952, in Clarinda and to this union three children were born: Orvis Lee (Dawn) Wagaman of College Springs, IA, Deona Faye (Mike Sloan) Peterson, Phoenix, AZ, and Randy Wagaman, College Springs, IA.
After their marriage, Nina and Bob moved to Newberg, OR, and worked the "fruit fields" during the early '50's. They later moved back to Villisca then to Plattsmouth, NE, and then into Glenwood, IA, where Nina worked at the Lakeview Manor Nursing Home and later the Glenwood State Hospital School. She then transferred to Mental Health Institute in Clarinda. She retired from the MHI in 1992.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, and half brother and sister-in-law Darrell and Jane Willis. Survivors include her children: Orvis Lee, Deona Faye and Randy; grandchildren: Kristi Lynn (Jerry) Davis, Brent Lee Wagaman; Ricky Dean Peterson, Stacy Renee Peterson and Mason Carney Wagaman; great grandchildren Tanner Dale Davis, Dylan Dean Peterson, and Nathan Michael Peterson; brother Wilber (Ilene) Stephens; brothers-in-law Orvis (Carolyn) Wagaman, Davis (Sharon) Wagaman, special friend Rosie Spear, and traveling, camping, fishing buddy, and very special friend, Wilbur Lininger.
Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel of Clarinda was in charge of arrangements.
Loretta M. Core Laire
Loretta Margaret Core Laire, the daughter of Lorenz R. and Clara (Unger) Baumbach, was born October 1, 1922 in Red Willow County, Nebraska near McCook. She died on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 at the Oakland Manor in Oakland, Iowa at the age of 81 years, 3 months and 6 days.
Loretta was raised near McCook, NE, moving to rural Oakland, IA in l937. The family then moved to a farm near Carson, IA. Loretta was united in marriage to Rufus Core on February 27, 1941 in Red Oak, IA. They established a home on a farm near Oakland. In 1950 they moved to a farm near Villisca, where they lived until Rufus died.
Loretta was then united in marriage to Mervin Laire on August 17, 1968 in Red Oak, IA. They moved into Red Oak in l976. After her health declined she moved to Oakland Manor in 2001. Loretta attended the First Covenant Church in Red Oak. She enjoyed her family, friends, neighbors and her coffee time.
Loretta was preceded in death by her parents, husbands: Rufus on February 5, 1965 and Mervin on April 24, 1994, a grandson, David Connell, a sister, Luella and a brother, Marvel.
Loretta is survived by four daughters and their husbands; Judy & Mervin Robison of Omaha, NE, Gloria & Warren Berglund of Red Oak, IA, Jane & Bob Husz of Council Bluffs, IA and Joan & Henry Samaniego of Tucson, AZ: 12 grandchildren; Jeff Robison and wife Jill, Jill Robison, Keri Kennon, Shay Berglund, Mike Berglund, Michelle Berglund, Loni Keat and husband Jack, Andrew Samaniego, Frances Samaniego, Jason Connell and wife Teresa, Ryan Husz and wife Shanda and Melanie Husz: 8 great-grandchildren; Kaden & Madison Robison, Bryan Berglund, Ryker & Sydney Connell, Michael Husz, Phylip & Dylin Keat: 2 brothers; Harold Baumbach and wife Grace of Villisca, IA and Lee Baumbach of Elliott, IA: a sister, Betty Smith and husband Gene of Villisca, IA, other relatives and a host of friends.

John William Zuber, Jr.
Funeral services for John William Zuber, Jr., of Mesa, AZ, were held December 27, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church in Mesa, AZ.
John was born in Hepburn, IA on July 20, 1914 to John William Zuber, Sr. and Fae Marie VanGilder. He died December 21, 2003.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith W. Case.
Survivors include his four children, Roger (Elva), Jane Cartwright (John) and Richard, all of Mesa and Lynette (Tom) of Gilbert, AZ; two brothers, Ronald of Mesa and Robert (Phyllis) of Perry, IA; and sister-in-law Velma Case of Tenville, IA. Also five granddaughters and two great-grandsons, and many nieces and nephews.
Wilma May Lewis
Funeral services for Wilma May Lewis, Villisca, were held Tuesday, January 6, 2004, at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca, IA, with the Rev. Chris Hall officiating.
Wilma May Lewis was born November 14, 1923, in Clarinda, IA, to Carl and Clara (Freeman) Sebeneicher. She died January 1, 2004, at the Red Oak Rehab and Care Center in Red Oak, IA, where she had been a resident since October 12, 2001.
Wilma married James Lewis on May 19, 1946. She had worked at the Linderman Hotel and Green Lantern in Villisca for over 14 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, an infant daughter and brother, Charles Anderson. Wilma is survived by her son Duane Lewis of Colorado Springs, CO; daughters Coleen Herren and husband John of Red Oak, IA, and Alice Bergren and husband Gary of Red Oak. Fourteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. One sister Dorothy Steinkamp and husband James of Shenandoah, IA, and brother Robert Anderson of Colorado. Also many nieces and nephews.
A memorial is being established. Wolfe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ruth E. Carmichael
Ruth E. Carmichael, age 98, passed away on December 15, 2003. She has resided at the Villisca Good Samaritan Nursing Home since December of 2000.
Ruth Elizabeth King Carmichael was born near Nodaway, IA, in Adams County on December 2, 1905 to James Herbert King and Etta May King. Ruth attended Lyons School Dist. No. 9 southeast of Villisca for 8 years. Then the King family moved to a farm north of Villisca in 1924. She taught at the Lomas/Victor country school north of Villisca for 2 years and the Findley School for 1 year. She was married to George Willard Carmichael of rural Villisca, Iowa on June 22, 1927 at the Methodist parsonage in Creston, Iow, attended by her sister, Florence and husband, Glen Jackson of Villisca. They lived in Creston, Iowa where George taught at the local high school. In 1929, they moved to the Carmichael family farm northeast of Villisca where Ken and Diane Jacobs now live. They farmed there for many years. Teaching and government work took them to Clarinda, Atlantic, Logan, Iowa and finally to Red Oak before returning to the farm in 1962. They retired and moved to the town of Villisca in 1975.
Ruth and George were blessed with three children, Dorothy Marie, J. Robert and George Leroy.
Ruth and George enjoyed an Open House on their 50th Wedding Anniversay in June of 1977 at the Villisca Methodist Church. Ruth has been a member of the church since a very early age. She belonged to the United Methodist Women and the Joy Circle. She was a member of the Villisca Progress Club and the Afternoon Literary Department. She was also a member of the Happy Hour Club N.E. of Villisca and of the Coffee Club of Villisca.
Ruth was chosen Montgomery County Homemaker in 1953. She held many offices in Montgomery County Farm Bureau Women and the Extension Service. She was Villisca's Progress Club Mother-of-the-Year in 1984. She was active in her church, with the United Methodist Woman and with Circles for many years. She loved 'doing' for others. She liked people. She loved her family and her many friends. She loved flowers, tatting and other handwork. She loved to read until failing eyesight made reading impossible. She wrote many poems over the years until she could no longer see to write.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; her daughter, Dorothy Marie; her son, George Leroy; her brothers, Frank King and Emmet King; her sister Florence and brother-in-law, Glen Jackson; and her sister, Mary and brother-in-law, Wil Hethcote; and by her daughter-in-law, Betty J. Carmichael. Surviving is her son, J. Robert and his three children, Cristie Carmichael of North Fort Myers, Florida, Jeff Carmichael of Fort Myers, Florida and Dr. Joel and his wife Cheryl and their three daughters, Kelsey, McKenzie and Whitney of Littleton, Colorado. Last, but most definitely not least, she leaves many loving nieces and nephews who she deeply cherished.
Funeral services will be held at the United Methodist Church in Villisca at 10:30 a. m. on Friday, December 19, 2003 with the Rev. Sandra Wainwright officiating.
Lunch will be served by the United Methodist Women at the church after graveside services. Visitation will be the night before at the Wolfe Funeral Home from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on December 18th. Ruth will be buried in the Villisca Cemetery
next to George, Dorothy Marie and George Leroy. An Angel has returned Home.
Melvin P. Nilles
Melvin P. Nilles, 66, of Red Oak, Iowa, formerly of the Grant area, died Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Red Oak, IA, where he had been a resident since July 23, 1997. Melvin was born December 26, 1936, in Hamilton County, Iowa, the son of Charles J. Nilles and M. Lucy Mariga Nilles.
Melvin grew up in the Gilmore City area and went to school at the St. John's Catholic School in Gilmore City. He had served in the United States armyas a military police officer, after the Korean War.
He married Donnavieve E. Krug on December 27, 1958, in Fort Dodge, IA, to this union six children were born: Wayne, Larry, Holly, Julie, Janet and Cheryl. Melvin had farmed in the Gilmore City and Humboldt area, before moving to Grant in 1974, where he farmed with his son Larry. Melvin married Susan (Osmun) Gaiser on July 23, 1982, in rural Grant, IA. He was known for his woodworking and welding. One of his hobbies was hunting.
Melvin is survived by his two sons, Wayne Nilles of Fort Dodge, IA and Larry Nilles and wife Vicki of Corning, IA; four daughters, Holly Forslund and husband Roger of Sioux City, IA, Julie Strickland and husband, Lyle, of Stanton, IA, Janet Hilbert and husband, Scott, of Fort Dodge, IA, and Cheryl Campe and husband Kevin of Cherokee, IA. Ten grandchildren; Roger Haley of Ames, IA, Jason Haley and wife Erin of Gretna, NE, Jackie, Ethan, and Collin Strickland of Stanton, IA, Anthony and Jessica Hilbert of Fort Dodge, IA, Kelvin, Konrad and Kyla Campe of Cherokee, IA. Two great grandchildren; Coy and Jayden Haley of Gretna, NE. Five brothers; Don Nilles and wife Barbara of Waynesville, NC, Jack Nilles and wife Verna of Gilmore City, IA, Harold Nilles and wife Bobbe of Gilmore City, IA, Joe Nilles of West Palm Beach, FL and Jim Nilles. Seven sisters; Dorothy Meier and husband, Ott, of La Porte City, IA, Mary Buckner and husband, Chet of Reeds Springs, MO, Barb Sawyer and husband Marvin of Humboldt, IA Marcie Ortner and husband, Gene, of Dunkerton, IA, Clarine Abeita and husband, Frank, of Los Lunas, NM, Lucille Ortner and husband Ron of Spencer, WI and Eva Cafferty and husband Jack of Mauston, WI. Plus many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 22, 2003, at the Wolfe Funeral Home inVillisca, IA, with Rev. Harold Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Grant Cemetery , Grant, IA. Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 6:30 until 8 at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca, IA. Memorials may be directed to the Grant Fire Department or the Morton Mills Church.
