Hazel B. Penwell
Hazel B. Penwell, the oldest daughter of six children born to John Lyman Bryant and Jessie (Maud) Coppock Bryant, was born July 6, 1909 in Henderson, Iowa and passed away December 13, 2003 at the Villisca Good Samaritan Center.
She graduated from Villisca High School in 1927. She moved with her family in 1922 to Morton Mills, where she lived until her death. On February 11, 1932, Hazel was united in marriage to Howard Penwell in Omaha, Nebraska; three children were born to this union: David, Sandra and Donna. She was a member of the Morton Mills Church and Ladies Aid for many years as well as numerous neighborhood clubs.
Hazel enjoyed sewing, quilting and gardening (especially flowers). What brought her the most joy would be her family and faith.
Those preceding her in death were her parents, husband Howard in 1984, one brother Ralph Bryant and two sisters Pauline Cooney and Orcelia (Toots) Selders.
Hazel is survived by her son David and wife Susie of Athens, Tenn.; daughters Sandra Taylor and husband Lynn of Morton Mills, Iowa and Donna Chapman and husband Warren of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; two brothers Wayne Bryant and wife Lovina of Underwood, Iowa and John Bryant and wife Karen of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sisters-in-law Audrey Bryant of Denison, Iowa, Elizabeth Baker of Elliot, Iowa and Jean Mossman of Fort Collins, Colorado, plus many more relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 16 at the Morton Mills Church, Morton Mills, Iowa, with Chaplain Gordon Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the Morton Mills Cemetery . Visitation will be held 7 to 8 Monday evening at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca. Memorials may be directed to the Morton Mills Church.
Doris L. Schroeder
Graveside services for Doris L. Schroeder, 86, of Villisca, Iowa will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 16 at the Villisca Cemetery . Visitation will be held at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca, IA Tuesday from 10 a.m. until service time. A memorial is being established.
Doris L. Schroeder died Friday, December 12, 2003, at the Villisca Good Samaritan Center, where she had been a resident since August of 2002. She was born March 6, 1917 near Villisca, Iowa, the daughter of Frank Weil and Nellie Briggs Weil.
Doris married Edwin H. Schroeder in 1948, he preceded her in death in 1981. She had sold Kirby sewing machines for over 10 years and then spent the rest of her life as a homemaker. She enjoyed arts and crafts and spent many hours doing needlework until her sight failed.
She was survived by her son Arvid D. Garey and special friend Ellen Hendrickson of Villisca; 11 grandchildren and several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; plus a brother Richard Weil.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents, Gail Clark Garey and Edwin Henry Schroeder, two sons Urias Frank Garey and Darwin Garey and one sister Berdenia Rich.
MARTHA "LORAINE" MILLER
Funeral services for Martha "Loraine" Miller were held Friday, November 28, 2003, at the Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home in Grant City, MO. Her son-in-law Rev. Eric Mattson officiated.
Loraine was born October 9, 1924 in Corning, IA, to Earl Murren and Edith (Riggle) Murren. She died November 25, 2003 at Blue Springs, MO.
Loraine lived most of her youth in Page County, IA. She married Duane Lister on March 23, 1946 and to this union two children were born, Cheryl and Mark. Duane died on April 11, 1953. She married Claude Miller on April 7, 1956, and to this union two children were born, Kathy and Linda. Claude died January 15, 1992.
She was very active with her family and church.
Preceding her in death were her parents and both husbands, and also three brothers, Clifford, Cleo and Larry Murren.
She is survived by her four children: Cheryl (Mrs. Robert Hill) of Missouri; Mark and wife Mary of Nebraska; Kathy (Mrs. Rev. Eric Mattson); and Linda (Mrs. Steve Johnson) of Missouri. Also ten grandchildren: Michael Hill; Michelle, Megan, Martha, Mary Ann and Maddison Lister; Daniel Mattson; and Mathew, Tyler and Vannessa Johnson. Four sisters: Velma (Mrs. Glen Snodgrass) of Perry, OK; Maxine Anderson of Bellevue, NE; Rev. Charlotte (Rev. Sheridan Mellot) of Omaha, NE; and Evelyn (Mrs. Edwin Briggs) of New Market, IA. Also many nieces, nephews and friends.
JAMES A. SKIDMORE
Funeral services for James A. "Jimi" Skidmore of Hastings, IA, were held Tuesday, December 2, 2003, at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Steve McKinney officiating. Burial was at the Wesley Chapel Cemetery
in Mills County, IA.
James A. Skidmore died Saturday, November 29, 2003 in Mills County, IA, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born August 31, 1947 in Miami, FL, the son of James Aaron and Ardith (Allensworth) Skidmore.
He was raised in Florida and attended school there until serving in the United States Army as a Sky Soldier in the 173rd Airborne Division. Jim served during Vietnam and was awarded a purple heart as well as other honors.
Upon returning from the war Jim lived in Jacksonville, FL, until moving to Iowa where he has lived in Henderson, Stanton, and most recently Hastings. When he lived in Florida, he raced motorcycles and worked on a line crew for the power company. When he moved to Iowa he worked for the Eveready Battery Company for many years. After Eveready, Jim owned and operated a bar and restaurant in Hastings before going to work for Wheeler Truck Line in Omaha. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Cocoa Beach, FL, the Red Oak Elks Lodge #1304, and the Harley Davidson HOG organization.
Jim was preceded in death by his grandparents and his father.
Survivors include his step-son Trevor Scanlan of Stanton, IA; his mother, Ardith "Ardi" Winnett of Red Oak, IA; a sister, Janice McGinn of Chicago, IL; a brother, Ron Skidmore of Emerson, IA; four nieces: Erin McGinn of Chicago, IL, Bailie Skidmore, Demi Skidmore, and Paige Johnson all of Red Oak, IA; an uncle and aunt, Richard and Deloma Allensworth of Emerson, IA; step-mother, Peg Panter of Winchester, TN; and many other relatives and friends. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
EVELYN GREELEY
Funeral services for Evelyn Greeley of Burlington Junction, MO, were held Thursday, December 11, 2003 at the United Methodist Church in Burlington Junction. Burial was at the Nodaway Memorial Gardens in Maryville, MO.
Evelyn Greeley died Monday, December 8, 2003. She was born at Dalton, NE, on May 25, 1925 to George and Ruth (Shinker) Winkelman.
She graduated from the Dalton High School in 1942. Evelyn married Robert M. Greeley on August 22, 1945, at St. Francis, KS, and they moved to northwest Missouri in 1946 where they lived on the family farm until 1990. She was a homemaker.
Evelyen is survived by her three children: Wanda and Harlan Johnson of Elliott, IA; Irene Lager, Burlington Junction, MO; Kirby and Nancy Greeley, Hopkins, MO; three brothers, Harold and Lenora; Lloyd and Johnadene; and Donald and Connie Winkelman; two sisters, Darlene and Herb Fecht; and Carol and Kayo Cape, all of Dalton, NE; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

FRED DALE ERICKSON
Funeral services for Fred Erickson, Stanton, were held Saturday, November 29, 2003 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial was at the Strand Cemetery
in Adams County, IA.
Fred Dale Erickson was born April 14, 1921 on a farm north of Marne, IA, the son of Carl Arthur and Ethel (Corey) Erickson. He died Monday, November 24, 2003, at the Red Oak Rehab and Care Center in Red Oak.
Fred's family lived on the farm near where he was born for his first eight years. They then moved to Atlantic for one year and later to Van Wert, IA, where Fred graduated from high school in 1940. Fred, along with his two brothers, served in WWII in the Navy. He was trained at the Great Lakes Training Center and was stationed on the U.S.S. Chicago before it was torpedoed and sunk. He then served in New Caledonia. After the war, the three Erickson brothers bought a farm that has been most recently farmed by the late Lois Erickson. Fred later bought his own farm east of the Strand Cemetery
where Fred will be buried. He bought a house and moved into Stanton in 1995 and later to the Red Oak Rehab and Care Center in 2001. While on the farm, Fred raised cattle, hogs, some unique chickens, as well as ducks and geese.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a nephew, Roger Lee Verwers, killed in Vietnam in 1967; and a brother Ed Erickson.
Survivors include his five sisters Margaret Nelson of Des Moines, IA; Betty Szyperski of Anoka, MN; Beverly Walker and husband Jim of Bellevue, WA; Jennie Swanson of Columbia Heights, MN; and Marie Harmon and husband Gordon of Springfield, MO; brother Earl Erickson and wife Betty of Adel, IA; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Albert Baker
Memorial services for Pastor Albert Allan Baker, 76, of Villisca, Iowa were held Monday, November 24th at the Advent Christian Church in Villisca. Burial was in the Arlington Cemetery
with military graveside rites by the Villisca American Legion Ker-A-Vor Post 251.
Albert died suddenly at his home in Villisca, on Wednesday, November 19, 2003. Albert was born November 30, 1926 in Villisca, IA, the son of Samuel Lewis Baker and Jessie Isabell Fail Baker.
He was a 1949 graduate of the Villisca High School. Albert had worked at Clarinda Oil for 7 years, Jane's Paper and Paint in Villisca 10 years, Hy-Vee in Villisca 10 years, Weiner Grocery Store in Villisca 4 years and was a Custodian at the Villisca High School for 12 years. He became a pastor in 1971 and had ministered at the Hickory Grove Advent Christian Church and the Morton Mills church plus filling in at the Advent Christian Church in Villisca.
Albert served in the Navy during WWII from March 9, 1945 until August 6, 1946. He then joined the National Guard and was a member of the Company "F" 168th Infantry. He was discharged on November 24, 1950. He then became a member of the Air National Guard until December 14, 1953 and then enlisted in the Air Force serving during the Korean Conflict from September 14, 1953 until September 13, 1956.
Albert was a member of the Advent Christian Church, and Head Elder of the Church, a member of the American Legion Ker-A-Vor Post 251 and was the Chaplin of the Legion since 1997 and was a past member of the Villisca Lion's Club.
He enjoyed flowers; collected swans, elephants and Santa Claus's. Albert enjoyed talking to people, spending time at the Villisca Senior Citizen's Center, visiting hospitals and nursing homes. Albert was a friend to many and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his sisters Evelyn Salway and husband Bud of Villisca, IA and Sharon Farlin and husband Leo of Emerson, IA; and brothers Willis Baker and wife Jean of Red Oak, IA and Donald Baker and wife Donna of Villisca, plus many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dorothy Hamner and infant sisters Margaret and Elizabeth Baker.
Memorials may be directed to the Advent Christian Church, the Villisca Senior Citizens Center or the Villisca Fire and Rescue.
Darle A. Lindell
Darle A. Lindell, 60, of Lincoln Nebraska died December 1, 2003.
Born in Red Oak, IA April 29, 1943 to Milton & Jeanette Lindell. He graduated from Villisca High School in Villisca, IA. He married Beverly Ankeny on August 25, 1961 and was later divorced. He worked for Magee's in Lincoln, NE and later was a sales representative for Don Moor Clothing Co. of New York City. He then owned and operated Crete Refuge Service in Crete, NE.
He is survived by his daughter Robin and her husband Chris MacKnight of Lincoln, NE; son Jeffrey & wife Reka Lindell of Ankeny, IA; grandchildren Teagan & Trey MacKnight, Savanna & Daphne Lindell; brother Don Lindell of Red Oak, IA; sister Betty & Lee Blunt of Oelwein, IA; and fiance Sharon Hartz of Lincoln, NE He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents
Services will be held Friday, December 5 at 10 a.m. at Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home, Lincoln, NE with The Rev. Michael McMurtry officiating. There will be no visitation. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Mamre Cemetery , Stanton, IA.
Memorials: in lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
John Thomas Null
Graveside services for John Thomas Null, 67, of Villisca, Iowa, were held 3 p.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at the Villisca Cemetery
with Rev. Sandra Wainwright officiating. Military rites were conducted by the American Legion Ker-A-Vor Post 251 adn V.F.W. Wesley R. Miller Post #8998 of Villisca.
John Null died Tuesday morning at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa. He was born May 27, 1936 in Guthrie County, Iowa, the son of Arthur Monroe Null and Ora Ellen Vaughn Null.
John had owned and operated his own plumbing business in Dodge City, Kansas, where he lived most of his life. He moved to Villisca in May of 2002, from Kansis City, Kansas where he had lived for around one year. He had also served in the Army.
He is survived by his wife Charlotte; his son John T. Null of Whatcheer, IA and daughter Debra Morton and husband John of Mulvane, Kansas; three grandchildren; and one brother Duane Null of Villisca, IA.
John was preceeded in death by his parents; one daughter Linda Oterstein; brothers Melvin, Claire, Kenneth, Floyd, Keith and Richard; and sisters Marguerite Gander, Juanita Smith, Ina Mae Johnson and Lora Ellen Stock.
ARTHUR "ART" JACOBSON
Arthur "Art" Jacobson, age 83, of Stanton, Iowa passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at the Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Arthur Carl Edward Jacobson was born October 23, 1920 in Page County, Iowa the son of Andrew and Anna (Carlson) Jacobson.
He was raised on the Century Family Farm and attended country school in Page County and high school in Red Oak. Art was united in marriage to Marcella Hill on September 16, 1944 at the Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton, Iowa. Over the years Art worked at the Stanton REC, Davis-Mannasmith-Herbold Veterinarians, was a regional manager for McCurdy Seed Company, as well as farming all of his life. Marcella and Art lived on the family farm not far from where Art was born. He was a member of the Mamrelund Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday School for 25 years and served on the Church Board. Art was also a former member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Art loved God and was a devoted husband and family man. Art and Marcella danced every Saturday night to the music of Guy Lombardo in their living room and did so for the past 59 years. He loved to tell stories and was proud of his Swedish Heritage. Art often told these stories in his fluent Swedish style. Art never knew a stranger and would often give family and friends rings and bow ties that were crafted from dollar bills. He was known for his firm hand shake and often enjoyed pulling a finger or two to show his strength. He was always up for the challenge.
Proceeding him in death were his parents; his sister: Alice Jacobson on March 5, 1998; and a great grandson: Connor.
Survivors include his wife: Marcella Jacobson of Stanton, Iowa; son: Gary Jacobson and his wife Madonna of Griswold, Iowa; 3 daughters: Ann Johnson and her husband Dick of Red Oak, Iowa; Becky Bruning and her husband Steve of Stanton, Iowa; and Sandy Wilson and her husband Dave of Stanton, Iowa; one daughter-in-law: Rosemary Jacobson of Stanton, Iowa; 11 grandchildren: Todd Jacobson and his wife Paula of Shenandoah, Iowa; Kristen Jacobson and her fiancÈ Antonio Thoms of Omaha, Nebraska; Missy Jacobson and friend Matt Weichman of Corning, Iowa; Danee Redd and friend Rick Heidleberger of Omaha, Nebraska; Heather Huddle and husband Josh of Stanton, Iowa; Brandi Blackman and husband Bret of Glenwood, Iowa; Lindsay Paulsen and husband Craig of Mitchell, South Dakota; Troy Bruning and wife Rebecca of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Jodi Bruning of Ames, Iowa and friend Cody Allen of Ames, Iowa; Drew Wilson of Maryville, Missouri; and Brett Wilson of Stanton, Iowa; 2 step-grandchildren: Creighton Nelson and wife Sarah of Griswold, Iowa; and Eve Kwiatkowski of Griswold, Iowa; 4 great grandchildren: Evan, Isaac, Haylie, and Britney; and many other relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held 10:30 AM Monday, November 17, 2003 at the Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton with the Rev. Dr. Eric Kutzli officiating. Burial will be in the Mamre Cemetery . Visitation with the family will be held from 2-4 PM Sunday, November 16, 2003 at the Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton.
Memorials are suggested in lieu of flowers to the Mamrelund Lutheran Church, the Stanton Rescue Unit, or the Swedish Heritage and Cultural Center. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak is in charge of arrangements.
