A memorial has been established for American Legion of Sumner, Missouri

Mr. Charles H. Smith, 69, of Burlington, died at 7:30 AM Saturday, August 26, 2006, at his summer home in Sumner, Missouri.

Born August 6, 1937 in Monroe City, Missouri, he was the son of Lawrence H. and Beulah Faye Wilson Bunstock Smith. On September 13, 1969, he married Irene E. Hummer in Quincy, Illinois. She died March 22, 1987.

Mr. Smith worked in production for J.I. Case Company for 29 ½ years retiring in 1992.

He was a member and past president of U.A.W. Local #807, Moose Lodge, Eagles Club, Lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed country music, bowling, gardening and spending time at his vacation home where he did goose, deer hunting, and fishing near Swan Lake National Refuge with his friends.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include one brother, Alan LeRoy Smith of Davenport; four sisters, Shirley Cleland of Oakville, Mary Ann Elliott of Wever, Mardell Rambow and Wanda Sue Fritz both of Burlington; three brothers-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, one daughter Tammy L. Andrews of Burlington, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; and special companion Ila Epperson of Sumner, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter, and two sons.

Friends may call from noon until 8:00 PM Tuesday, in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 30th, from noon until the time of service.

The funeral service for Mr. Charles H. Smith will be 1:30 PM Wednesday at Lunning Chapel with the Reverend Dean Graber officiating. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the American Legion of Sumner, Missouri.

Rita Ann Smith
December 15, 1929 - September 15, 2006

-Memorial Mass of Christian Burial: Tuesday, September 19th, 10:30 AM in SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church

According to her wishes, the body of Ms. Smith has been cremated.

Rita Ann Smith, 76, of Burlington, died at 9:23 p.m. Friday, September 15, 2006 at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

Born December 15, 1929 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Daniel A. and Marie E. Fitzgerald McLaughlin. She was previously married to Clifford Houston and he preceded her death.

Ms. Smith was assistant manager at A. Y. McDonald Company in Burlington for over 30 years, retiring in 1993. She was of the Catholic faith and enjoyed her family and friends.

Survivors include two sons, Gary Houston of Burlington, and Terry Houston of Florida; one daughter Vickie Rios of Burlington; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; four sisters, Loraine Hockett of Kansas City, Kansas, Joanne Riley of Mansfield, Texas, Rosemary (Harold) Abel and Linda (Tom) Clayton both of Burlington; three brothers, Dan (Joann) McLaughlin of Quincy, Illinois, Eugene (Chris) McLaughlin of Des, Moines, IA and Patrick (Elsie) McLaughlin of Burlington; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Janice Arlene Sporer
January 6, 1937 - May 26, 2006

- There will be no visitation or funeral service.
-According the Mrs. Sporer's wishes, her body has been cremated.

Janice Arlene Sporer, 69, of Sperry and formerly of Burlington died Friday, May 26, 2006, at Genesis Medical Center in Davenport.

Born January 6, 1937 in Ledgerwood, North Dakota, she was the daughter of Herbert and Gladys Kahoutek Kackman. On June 30, 1961 she married David M. Sporer in Mount Clemens, Michigan. He died March 2, 2002.

Mrs. Sporer was a 1955 graduate of Ledgerwood High School and was a veteran of the Air Force serving from 1955 until 1961.

She worked as a switchboard operator for the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California and Motel 6 in Lompoc, California for 20 years, retiring in 2001. She liked to knit and made comforters.

Survivors include two daughters, Lynne (Dan) Luebbers of Sperry and Julie Sporer of Burlington; three grandchildren; three brothers, Larry (Flo) Kackman and Vernon (Marge) Kackman both of Minnesota and Eugene (Carol) Kackman of North Dakota; and one sister, Darlene Arth of North Dakota.

Her husband, parents, and one sister Lois preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established.

Howard R. Stamper

August 23, 1930 - May 20, 2006

-Family will receive Friends: Tuesday, May 23rd, 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM in Lunning Chapel
- Memorial Funeral Service: Tuesday, May 23rd, 10:30 AM in Lunning Chapel

The Rev. David Mixon will officiate.
- According to his wishes, the body of Mr. Stamper has been cremated.

Howard R. Stamper, 75, of Oakville, died at his residence at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2006.

Born August 23, 1930 in Burlington, he was the son of Evert R. and Mabel Robbins Stamper. On April 18, 1954 he married Lola Jean Metcalf in Burlington.

Mr. Stamper served with the U.S. Navy. He worked as a welder for Modern Welding Co. for 20 years. He also was a farm hand.

Mr. Stamper was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed going camping, fishing and being with his friends.

Survivors include, his wife, Jean Stamper of Oakville; five sons, Doug Stamper of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Dave Stamper of Burlington, Curt Stamper and Ken Stamper both of Mediapolis, and Jesse Stamper of Gering, Nebraska; four daughters, Rebecca Stamper and Nancy Hand both of Burlington, Annette Stamper of Casa Grande, Arizona, and Cathy Burtlow of Ottumwa; 13 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; two sisters, Bessie Lipper of Hamilton, Illinois, and Clara Rayburn of Dodgeville; one stepbrother, Jim Elder of Burlington; one stepsister, Marie Sly of Fort Madison; one half sister, Twila Siner of The Village, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Scott Alan Stamper, three brothers and one stepsister.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Oakville Fire and Rescue.

Scott Stamper
January 21, 1963 - October 17, 2005

-Services: Friday, October 21, 2005 at 10:30 AM in Aspen Grove Cemetery for a Graveside Memorial Service.

Scott Alan Stamper, 42, of Mediapolis, died Monday afternoon, October 17, 2005 in Oakville.

Born January 21, 1963 in Keokuk, he was the son of Howard Raymond and Lola Jean Metcalf Stamper.

Mr. Stamper worked in agriculture as a farm laborer.

He attended Mediapolis High School. He was of the Christian faith. He loved to fish and be outdoors.

Survivors include his parents of Oakville; five brothers, Doug Stamper of Scotts Bluff, NE, Dave Stamper of Burlington, Curt Stamper and Ken Stamper both of Mediapolis, and Jesse Stamper of Gering, NE; four sisters, Rebecca Stamper and Nancy Hand, both of Burlington, Annette Stamper of Casa Grande, AZ, and Cathy Burtlow of Ottumwa; and 13 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

A memorial has been established for Oakville Fire and Rescue.

Lester Fredrick Starman
November 26, 1925 - October 26, 2006

Lester Fredrick Starman, age 80, passed away 5:00 a.m. Thursday, October 26, 2006, at Great River Medical Center after a six-month battle with cancer.

He was born November 26, 1925 on a farm near Sperry, Iowa the son of Roy Henry and Marie Johanna “Mary” Steffener Starman. On June 6, 1945 he married Arleen Luedemann at Concordia Lutheran Church in Burlington.

He was a 1943 graduate of Burlington High School. His employment included the Midwest Biscuit Company, Burlington Northern Railroad, J.I. Case Co. and Klein Mfg. He was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for 27 years, retiring in 1985.

He was an active and charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church. Most important in his life was his love for his Lord and Savior, his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The couple spent several winters in Weeki Wachee, Florida and attended Grace Lutheran Church in Spring Hill, Florida.

He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, NARFE, UCT, and Square-N-Aders square dance club. His hobbies included fishing, feeding and watching birds, especially cardinals and orioles. He was a life long sports fan. His favorite teams were the St. Louis Cardinals, Iowa Hawkeyes and the SCC Black Hawks dating back to the late ‘40’s. The couple loved to travel and visited Canada, Mexico and every state except Alaska.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Arleen Starman; one son, Dale Lester Starman of Weeki Wachee; three daughters, Linda (Don) Henning of Liberty, Illinois, Debbie (Bill) Dietsch of Temple, Pennsylvania and Darcie (Bob) May of Burlington; eight grandchildren, Sean Starman of Tampa, Florida, Dr. Shannan Starman of Atlanta, Georgia, Billi Jo (Adam) Baker of San Antonio, Texas, Lidonna (Stephen) Beer of Loveland, Colorado, Ian Henning of Tallahassee, Florida, and Zachary, Hillary and Kylie May of Burlington; four great-grandchildren, Avery and Alyssa Starman and Declan and Miriam Beer; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

His parents preceded him in death.

Marsha L. Steele
February 23, 1948 - September 8, 2006

Marsha L. Steele, 58, of Burlington, Iowa died at 1:42 a.m. Friday, September 8, 2006, at Genesis Medical Center in Davenport, Iowa.
Born February 23, 1948 in Burlington, she was the daughter of James and Iva Reynolds Green. On March 11, 1971 she married Charles Steele in Oquawka, Illinois. He died April 5, 1996.

Mrs. Steele was a graduate of Burlington High School and was a homemaker. She enjoyed all children and was a babysitter for many years. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her dog Blaze.

Survivors include one daughter, Judy (Tony) Jones of Burlington; six stepdaughters, Paula Stokes of Pikeville, North Carolina, Nancy DeFosse of Mediapolis, Iowa, Lucinda Miller and Karen Armstrong both of Burlington, and Christine Dorsey of Rome, Iowa; two stepsons, Charles Steele, Jr. of Morning Sun, Iowa and James Steele of Burlington; two grandsons, Chase Jones and Austin Jones; 14 step grandchildren; 15 step great grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Lamb, Mary Brown, Tonda Wilcox all of Burlington; her twin brother, Marcus Green of Burlington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gladys May Stegall
February 1, 1920 - December 17, 2006

-Friends May Call: Friday, December 29, from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM and from 8:00 AM until the time of service on Saturday, December 30
-Family Visitation: There will be no formal family visitation
-Funeral Service: Saturday, December 30, 1:00 PM in Lunning Chapel
The Reverend Dr. Frank Beaty will officiate
-Interment: Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery

Mrs. Gladys May Stegall, 86, of Burlington died at the Klein Center of Great River Medical Center at 2:40 a.m. Sunday, December 17, 2006.

Born February 1, 1920 in Illinois, she was the daughter of Percy and Pearl Norris Lipes. On July 6, 1940, she married Clifford S. Stegall in Burlington, Iowa. He died November 12, 1997.

Mrs. Stegall was a homemaker and attended West Avenue Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening and babies.

Survivors include her son, Nelson (Kim) P. Stegall of Punta Gorda, Florida; daughter, Janet S. Mantia of Peoria, Arizona; daughter-in-law, Sally Stegall of Burlington, Iowa; ten grandchildren; 27 Great grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; brother, David Lipes of Milan, Illinois; three sisters, Mary Arthur of Colorado Springs, Colorado, June Danner of Galesburg, Illinois, and Ann Hughes of Littleton, Colorado.

Her parents, husband, one son, Danny Stegall, four brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.
