ALFRED JOSEPH GUSTAFSON

Funeral services for Alfred Joseph Gustafson, 85, of Atlantic, Iowa were held on Friday, October 7, 2005 at 10 a.m. at the Roland Funeral Home with Rev. Gary DeGeest officiating. Committal was in the Adair cemetery.

A.J. was born January 9, 1920, in Griswold, Iowa. He was the son of Leonard J. Gustafson and Agnes (Nord) Gustafson. He attended rural school near Marne, Iowa. The family moved to a farm near Adair in the 1930's. A.J. graduated from the Adair High School in 1938. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943, where he served it Baltimore, Maryland, then in Hawaii, until his discharge in January, 1946, as rank of Aviation Chief as Metal Smith 1st Class.

On September 14, 1947, A.J. and Margaret Ann Iebsen were united in marriage. They were blessed with three children, Mari Gay, Sara Jane and Jon Mark. Jon passed away in April 1997.

A.J. lived life to the fullest, being strong and active up until his last day. He was an avid sportsman all his life, anticipating deer season, hunting with his son and friends, also with his father, who was just as interested in the hunt up until his late years.

A.J. and Margaret moved to Greenfield, Iowa in March 1949, where they started their own heating and sheet metal business, from this A.J. branched into the construction business, having built many new homes in Greenfield. In 1961, they moved to Montgomery County, where Alfred became a sales manager for "Page and Hill Homes". He continued working in sales up until his retirement.

Alfred was always an enthusiast of Indian lore and artifacts. It was from this love of collecting and going to shows related to this field that he became a well-known figure in Iowa as well as other states. This was his hobby as well as a business in his retirement years. Along with this, he managed his land and real estate properties, keeping him very busy. As he used to say, "You gotta hustle, it's the name of the game." And he was always ready for a good game of pinochle.

Alfred was a member of the Methodist Church, American Legion, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, National Rifle Association, Villisca Golf and Country Club.

A.J. is survived by his wife, Margaret of Atlantic, IA; daughters, Mari Gay Gustafson of Villisca, Sara Jane Gustafson of Atlantic; grandchildren, Scott Bond and friend Renee Rosch, J.J. Bond and wife Nola of Clarinda, Kent Allen and wife Jessica of Ames, Katie Hoffman and husband Ryan of Minneapolis, MN, Annie Buelow and husband Greg of Clarinda, Mindy Gustafson of Storm Lake, Jon Gustafson and Alison Gustafson of Creston; great grandchildren, Savanna Rousch, Aubrey Buelow and Britten Bond.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Agnes; son Jon Mark Gustafson; sister Goldie Johnson; and sister-in-law Darlene Gustafson.

Memorials may be made to the Methodist Church and Cass County Hospice.

Roland Funeral Services of Atlantic was in charge of arrangements.

CARL ALBERT JOHNSON

Carl Albert Johnson, the son of Carl F. and Adelia (Lantz) Johnson was born April 20, 1926 in Red Oak, IA. He died on Thursday, September 29, 2005 at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, IA at the age of 79 years, 5 months and 9 days.

Carl Albert was raised on a farm SW of Stanton and in 1943 graduated from Stanton High School. He entered the U.S. Army in l945 and was honorably discharged in l946. Carl Albert was united in marriage to Norma Patterson on August 20, 1948 in Essex, Iowa. He farmed SW of Stanton until his retirement in December of l988. They then moved into Stanton, IA. Carl Albert was a member of Mamrelund Lutheran Church, having served in many positions over the years. He was a member of Ernie Johnson Post #406 of American Legion, Stanton Chamber of Commerce, past school board member. Carl Albert was an avid golfer, a big sports fan for his grandchildren and Stanton High School. He had been active over the years with Stanton Baseball Days. He enjoyed time spent with family and friends over coffee.

Carl Albert was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Brent Johnson.

Carl Albert is survived by his wife, Norma Johnson of Stanton, Iowa; 4 children and their spouses; Barbara Johnson Frank & Alan of Lincoln, NE, Richard Johnson & Karol of Stanton, IA, Carleen Bruning & Kenny of Stanton, IA, Tim Johnson & Bonnie of Red Oak, IA; grandchildren; Rachel and Sarah Frank, Chris Johnson and wife Caleigh, Brenda Steenhoek and husband Brad, Kent Johnson and wife Stacy, Amy Sallach and husband Jeff, Kelly Bruning, Kevin Bruning, Cyndi Johnson; great-grandchildren, Brady, Drake, Carter & Marleigh Johnson, Denton Roberts and Cameron Sallach, other relatives and many friends.

RUDOLF MEIER

Rudolf Meier, age 88, of Clarinda, Iowa, died Friday, September 9, 2005, at the Nebraska Methodist Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 13, 2005, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Clarinda, Iowa with Pastor Nathan Dudley and Pastor Jerry Wagoner officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 7-8 p.m., Monday, September 12, 2005 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Burial will be in Summit Cemetery , rural Yorktown, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Clarinda Lutheran School or to the donor's choice. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.

Rudolf John Henry Meier was born April 17, 1917, in Nodaway Township, Page County, Iowa to William Meier and Rosa (Herzberg) Meier. He was baptized April 23, 1917 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Yorktown, Iowa by Pastor W. J. Horn. Rudolf was confirmed March 29, 1931 by Pastor O. Bahr. He attended the St. Paul Lutheran School, Yorktown, Iowa. On February 9, 1939, he was united in marriage to Bernice Wagoner at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Clarinda, Iowa. Rudolf was a life long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and held various offices through the years. He was a life long farmer and his farm was recognized as a Century Farm. Rudolf thoroughly enjoyed farming and raising livestock. Rudolf also enjoyed being a member of the Plainsmen choral group. He had been a Nodaway Township Trustee for many years and was instrumental in getting a rural fire truck.

Preceding Rudolf in death were his parents; wife, Bernice; infant brother; sister, Alma Sunderman; and brother Arnold Meier.

Survivors include his sons, Elwood Meier and wife Marilyn of Pierce, Nebraska and their children and grandchildren, John Meier and wife Michelle of Jacksonville, Arkansas, and Katrina, Abigail, and Alexander; Jay Meier and wife Larell of Pierce, Nebraska and Jakob, Garret, and Larissa; Jeffrey Meier and wife Jennifer of Pierce, Nebraska, and Carter. Curtis Meier and wife Brenda of Clarinda, Iowa and their children and grandchildren, Michael Meier and wife Angela of Clarinda, Iowa and Alyson; Leah Coston and husband Kevin of Clarinda, Iowa and Blaine and Brevin. Dennis Meier and wife Lynn of Villisca, Iowa and their children Daniel Meier and David Meier. Also surviving are sister, Ester Smiley of Clarinda, Iowa; brother, Lorenz Meier of Coin, Iowa; sister-in-law, Faith Wagoner of Clarinda, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Edna Mae Everett Weaver

Edna Mae Everett Weaver, died in residence at the Villisca Good Samaritan Home, Villisca IA, September 3, 2005; 83 years and 2 months after the day she was born July 3, 1922 in Nodaway, IA. Edna was the daughter of Harold Grant Everett and Mary Edna (CeCe) Norcutt Everett.

Edna graduated in 1939 from Nodaway High School where she was captain of the basketball team, played trombone in the band and was Valedictorian of her class. She was also an active member of the United Methodist Church, Nodaway. On June 7, 1940 Edna married Harry LeRoy Weaver in Savannah, MO at the Little Brown Church in a double ceremony with Harry's sister Maxine (Mick) Weaver and Charles Stinson.

Other than residing in Hemet, CA, for several years in the 1940's, working at Edward's AFB during World War II, Edna and Harry made their home in Villisca IA where Edna was a homemaker and mother. Edna later fed all the children in the Villisca Community Schools while working 22 years as a cook and later Manager of the school lunch program; Edna retired in 1987. Edna was a member of the United Methodist Church of Villisca and her interests, in addition to her family, included crocheting, gardening and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include daughter Linda Mae Weaver Bieber, Omaha NE with grandchildren Joshua, Missoula, MT & Hallie, Omaha; son Harvey Harold Weaver and wife, Marty Morgan Weaver, Grosse Pointe, MI with grandchildren Matthew, Mountain View, CA; Benjamin, Denver, CO; Molly, Denver, CO; and Cassie, Washington, D.C.; Sister, Wilma Everett Ellis, Stanton, CA; and cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Edna was preceded in death by her husband Harry L. Weaver (5/24/79) son, Jeffrey L. (8/30/85); her parents; Brother, James Mason Everett; and, Sister, Betty Marie Everett Johnson.

Edna was cremated and her family plans to have a commemorative service with celebration of Edna's life and interment alongside Harry and Jeffrey at Noble Center on a date announced later this fall to enable as many of her family and friends to attend as possible. Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca are in charge of arrangements.

ARDIS WINIFRED BRYAN

Ardis Winifred Bryan died on August 22, 2005, in Sun City Center, Florida, from complications following a stroke.

Ardis was born in Villisca, Iowa, July 14, 1922, to Emma and Gustav Froyd. She attended school in Villisca, graduating from high school in 1939. She then attended the University of Iowa, leaving after marrying Ensign C. Russell Bryan, of Red Oak, Iowa on December 26, 1944. Over the next 36 years she and her husband followed the path the Navy laid out for them, over many states and duty stations.

Ardis was a leader in caring for enlisted people and their families. In 1978 she christened the Destroyer Tender, USS Acadia (AD 42) and became a member of the United States Navy Society of Sponsors.

She was preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law and several brothers and sisters.

Ardis is survived by her husband, Vice Admiral C Russell Bryan, her daughter, Sidra VanNorden, her son Captain C.R. Bryan (ret.), her brothers, Russ Froyd and wife Gene, Frand Froyd and wife Katie; sisters Lillian Day, Alica Ashin, Shirley Shafton and Jini Westerlund and husband Ken; seven granddaughters: Kerry, Wendy, Holly Marie, Mersine, Clarine and Noel; and numerous nieces and nephews.

FERN LUCILLE MITCHELL

Funeral services for Fern Lucille Mitchell were held Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at the Sheridan Christian Church in Sheridan, MO, with Rev. Howard McPeak officiating. Interment was in the Sheridan Cemetery , Vanskyock Addition. Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home in Grant City was in charge of arrangements.

Fern Lucille Mitchell was born on January 21, 1921 in Adams County, IA to Thomas and Florence (Ridnour) Haley; and died August 7, 2005 at her home.
Fern was united in marriage to Edwin Mitchell on March 26, 1950. To this union four children were born.

Fern was a homemaker and was a dairy farmer for over 30 years. She was a member of the Sheridan Christian Church where she taught nursery for three generations. Fern loved children and was known as grandma to more than just her own grandchildren. She also loved to garden.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Thomas and Florence; her husband, Edwin, in 2001; four brothers: Delmar, Calvin, Jim and Clyde Haley; and two sisters, Esther Travis and Leota Ambrose.

Survivors include her children: Madeline and husband Stanley Waldeier of Norwalk, IA; Carolyn and husband Larry Beggs of Tonganoxie, KS; Vern Mitchell and wife Elaine of Parnell, MO; Beverly and husband Herb VanVactor of Stanberry, MO; nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

JIRD MALVIN FIDLER

Celebration of Life Services for Jird Malvin Fidler 74 of Villisca will be held 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 11th at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca, IA. At a later date Jird's ashes will be scattered at sea with full military honors, by an active duty naval vessel. Memorials may be directed to Aid Military Families.

Jird Malvin Fidler was born in Taylor County, Iowa, on April 13, 1932, the son of Charlie Bluford and Permelia (Mauderly) Fidler. After a long and valiant fight with cancer Jird passed away at his home in Villisca on August 5, 2006.

During his early childhood he lived in Iowa, Colorado and Nebraska. His family returned to Villisca where he completed high school in 1952.

Jird joined the U.S. Navy as a Seaman Recruit after graduation, and went to live in San Diego, California. He married Shirley Guss there in the Navy Chapel, at the Naval Air Station, North Island, on October 28, 1954. Four beloved daughters were born to this union. Whenever he was teased about having all girls, Jird was fond of saying "If the Lord thought I needed another man in the house, he'd have sent us one."

During his early service years in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jird received official recognition for designing specialized camera pods and nuclear protection shields for pilots in Special Weapons Aircraft. While serving with the Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron 2, aboard the U.S.S. Hornet, Jird invented seven different modifications on Sikorky Helicopters. These inventions were patented by the Navy and have been implemented on all SH-3A helicopters. During the course of his naval career, Jird advanced to the rank of Chief Warrant officer II and made four cruises on various aircraft carriers to the Far East, Korea and North Vietnam.

Naval retirement came in 1973 after 20 years of active duty. During his last year of naval service he was approached by the United States Treasury Department, Bureau of Customs to lead the maintenance division of the Narcotics Air Interdiction Unit. He was in charge of procuring all their aircraft and the implementation of maintenance sites along the Mexican border. Jird was very proud of being on the front lines of our nation's War on Drugs for 10 years.

Jird and his wife Shirley returned to their hometown of Villisca in 1084. Where he owned and operated Fidler's Small Engine Clinic for the next 15 years. In 2000, Jird finally retired permanently, enjoying the free time to go fishing, travel and spend time with family and close friends.

Jird was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Junior and Joe Fidler, sisters; Deo Marie and Cleo.

Jird is survived by his wife Shirley and their four daughters: Cheryl and special companion, Ronald Classen; Pamela Cass, Trina Johnson and husband Tracy and Janeen Hall and husband Vernon, all of Villisca, IA. Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Kristine Benton of Cleveland, OH, Abigail Cass of Richlands, VA, Benjamin Jird Cass of Warrenton, VA, Sonja Govig and husband Travis of Clarinda, IA, Katie Wagaman and husband Kaleb of Red Oak, IA, Nichole Wesbrook and husband George of Villisca, Jesse O'Briant and wife Crystal of Villisca, IA, Jeremiah Burton of Maryville, MO and Kirstin Hall of Villisca, IA. Five great grandchildren; Annie, Drake, Dakota Jird, Maxamas and Piper. He is also survived by one sister Ida Auxier of Auburn, NE, an Uncle Kenneth Fidler and wife Annabell of Villisca, IA and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

VERNA NELSON

Verna Nelson, age 93, of Clarinda, Iowa, died Wednesday, August 09, 2006, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 12, 2006 at the Bethesda Lutheran Church, Bethesda, Iowa with Pastor Julius Peterson officiating. Visitation with the family will be 7-8 p.m., Friday, August 11, 2006 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Burial will be in the Bethesda Lutheran Church Cemetery , Bethesda, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Verna Nelson Memorial Fund which will support the Bethesda Lutheran Church and the Stanton Care Center. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Verna Beatrice Schantz Nelson was born May 31, 1913 to Theodore and Amanda (Nelson) Schantz. She grew up on a farm near North Page which she cherished all of her life. Verna was a member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church where she was baptized, confirmed and later married. As a young child and throughout her adult life, Verna was very active in the church. Later in life she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and sang in the church choir for many years. She was very active in the ELCA women's organization, serving in various leadership capacities. Verna was a teacher at Johnson, Cramer and North Page country schools for several years.

On August 27, 1941, she was united in marriage to Carroll Vincent Nelson. Shortly after their marriage they moved to a farm near Bethesda where they lived for 58 years. During this time, God blessed them with two children, a son, Vincent and a daughter, Miriam. After the death of her husband, Carroll, Verna remained on the farm for three years, later moving to Clarinda, then most recently residing at the Stanton Care Center.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carroll; and a brother, LaVon Schantz.

Verna's remaining family includes a son, Vince Nelson and daughter-in-law, Pam of Iowa City, Iowa; a daughter, Miriam Nehe and son-in-law, Bob of Omaha, Nebraska; three grandchildren, Jeffrey, Alissa and Lauren Nehe of Omaha, Nebraska. In addition, her brother, Gerald Schantz of Baltimore, Maryland also survives.

Hallene Farlin Mattson

Graveside memorial services for Hallene Farlin Mattson 96, of Camarillo, California will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 24, 2006, at the Villisca Cemetery , with lunch following at the United Methodist Church in Villisca. Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca are in charge of arrangements.

Hallene Farlin Mattson was born in Villisca, Iowa, May 7, 1910, the daughter of Thomas Claude Farlin and Marguerite (Maggie) Almira Wainwright. She died June 3, 2006, at her home in Camarillo, California, with her son by her side. She lived most of her life in Iowa and helped her Dad with the farming where she learned to love gardening and did so all her life. She played the ukulele and sang as a young girl. Hallene raised Gerald and was a loving mother. She was a wonderful dancer and attended dances from her teens until her death.

She married Edward (Pete) Mattson also of Villisca in 1936. They had a loving marriage for 68 years. They had many hobbies together: they bowled, grew beautiful flowers, canned and traveled together. Hallene was a beautiful seamstress and made many dresses and dance costumes for her granddaughters. She quilted and made exquisite quilts. Her dream was to go to Hawaii. They finally went with their son and family, which was her first airplane flight. She was a Methodist all her life and belonged to the Methodist Federated Women's Club and Pacific Junction Iowa Bridge Club. She worked at the Iowa State Institution in Glenwood, IA.

Hallene is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Pete who died in 2002.

She is survived by her son Gerald Hollis and wife Dawn of Camarillo, CA five grandchildren: Starr Hollis Gotzen of Alice Springs, Australia, Cathy Hollis Wandell of Somis, CA, Kelli Hollis Maki of Agoura, CA, Michelle Hollis McCarty of Camarillo, CA and Mark Hollis of Gilchrist, OR. Nine great grandchildren and two great great grandsons in Australia. Two sisters: Mabel Mings of Grove, OK and Evie Ellis of Clarinda, IA. She leaves many nephews, nieces other relatives and friends. She was loved and will remain in our hearts forever.
