Dencil Keith Brenton

Memorial services for Dencil Keith Brenton were held August 8, 2006 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Sherwood, OR.

Dencil Keith Brenton was born June 25, 1916 in Villisca to Oliver and Goldie Brenton, and died August 2, 2006 in the Veteran's Hospital, Reno, NV.

He was one of nine children. He married Vera Henry on August 5, 1941 in Marksville, LA. He served with Villisca's Company F in World War II from 1941 to 1945 in Northern Africa, Italy and Ireland. The Brentons moved to Sherwood, OR in 1953. Living on his farm for more than forty years, and also working at Pitti Bone Mercury as a welder and machinist.

Denny was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, John and Lyle Brenton; and four sisters, Darleen Hays, Agnes Mitchell, Carol Scott and Lucille King.

Survivors include his son Rennie Brenton of Jacksonville, FL; his daughter Loretta Jane Brenton of Reno, NV; two granddaughters, Abigal Brenton of Milwaukee, WI and Tyler Brenton of Titusville, PA; two sisters, Kathryn Olson of Corning, IA and Fern Gutherie of Oakdale, CA; sister-in-law Marjorie Henry Dale of Osage Beach, MO; and many nieces and nephews.

Frances Louise Gray

Frances L. Gray, 88, of Villisca died on Friday, July 28, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Center in Villisca, IA where she had been a resident for almost two years.

Frances Louise (Penwell) Gray was born May 1918 to the late Clarence (Bud) Aaron Penwell and Helen (Watt) Penwell near Hepburn, Iowa. Frances attended country schools and graduated as valedictorian from Nodaway Consolidated School. She attended Grinnell College and transferred to Aurora College in Aurora, IL, graduating in 1939. She returned to Villisca and married her hometown love, Neal A. Gray, on June 29, 1940.

They are survived by their two sons: Dr. Richard Allen Gray of Austin, TX and Douglas Kent Gray and wife Bonny; and Frances and Neal's only grandson Alexander Tice Gray also of Austin, TX. In addition, Frances is survived by sisters: Carol Penwell Eichelberger of Aurora, IL, Marjorie Penwell Rucker and husband Chuck of Burlington, IA and Patricia Penwell Lopp and husband Gary of Chapel Hill, N.C. Sisters in law: Violet Gray Taylor of Oakdale, CA, Sharon Gray Ayers of Houston, TX area, and Elizabeth Gray of Villisca, IA, plus many loving nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents and husband Neal.

Giving to the community was the hallmark of Frances' rich life. She taught elementary school in Villisca for 35 years, touching the lives of generations of children. She was a lifetime member of the Villisca Advent Christian Church, serving in many leadership capacities and playing both the piano and organ for over 60 years. She also played for many weddings, funerals and other occasions in the community. She and Neal supported and attended the community school activities and sporting events as long as they were able. Frances was a member of the Inter-Church Council for many years. She was a member of the Chapter CH of the P.E.O Sisterhood for 54 years, a long-time member of Progress Club, the Literary Club, Retired Teachers Group and Christian Women's Club.

Frances was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was proud of her sons and their achievements, but the light of her life (and of Neal's) was her grandson Alex. Frances and Neal spent the winter months for several years in New Braunfels, TX to be near their family and enjoy Alex's activities, especially soccer.

We will also remember Frances as a loving sister, aunt, friend, educator, church member and community leader. We are thankful for our many memories.

The Family would like to thank friends in the community for their thoughtfulness and support, for the loving care of the staff at the Villisca Good Samaritan Center and especially cousins Vince and Judy Else for their continued care and communication on behalf of Frances.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at the Advent Christian Church in Villisca with Pastor Chris Hall officiating. Tina Anderson, a special friend and Jeff Rucker, a nephew are soloists. Burial will be in the Villisca Cemetery . Visitation will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca. Memorials may be made to the Advent Christian Church or to the Inter-Church Scholarship Fund 407 East 1st Street, Villisca, IA 50864.

THOMAS SHAPCOTT

Thomas Shapcott, age 72, of Villisca, Iowa, died Tuesday evening, July 25, 2006, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 29, 2006 at the Wolfe Funeral Home, Villisca, Iowa with Rev. Gordon Scott officiating. Visitation with the family will be 7-8 p.m., Friday evening, July 28, 2006 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery , Red Oak, Iowa with military rites by American Legion Ker-A-Vor Post 251. Memorials may be directed to American Diabetes Association or the Villisca EMT. Thomas Marion Shapcott was born at Emerson, Iowa, December 25, 1933 to Calvin and Irma (Shook) Shapcott. He went to school and was raised in Emerson, Iowa and was a big part of his Dad's farming and machinery business. In January, 1952, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served in Korea. He spent 2 years at sea and 2 years stationed in Pearl Harbor. Tom was discharged December 21, 1955 and was in the United States Navy Reserves until January 6, 1960. While he was in the service his Mom and Dad moved to Villisca and when he was discharged, he went to be with them and help his Dad in the machinery business. From 1960 on, he went into the buying and selling of farm machinery and tractors. He partnered with Cal to form Shapcott Implement Company of Villisca. The business grew to become the largest short line farm implement dealership in Southwest Iowa. In 1975, Tom bought the business from Cal. Tom was united in marriage September 2, 1956, to Phyllis Marie Anderson. To this union two children were born, Chris Allen Shapcott, October 18, 1957 and Brenda Lea Ingersoll, December 31, 1959. They raised their children in Villisca.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; Cal and Irma Shapcott.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years on September 2, Phyllis Shapcott of Villisca, Iowa; son, Chris Shapcott and his wife Juli of Underwood, Iowa; daughter, Brenda Ingersoll and husband Bill of Villisca, Iowa; four grandchildren, Skylar Winterstien, Erin Shapcott, twins, Lauren Shapcott, Kyle Shapcott; step grandchildren, Ben and Beth Ingersoll; brother, Bill Shapcott of Murfeesboro, Tennessee; sister, Madeline Burmeister of St. Petersburg, Florida; niece, Calla Acree and nephew, Ked Burmeister.

LYLE G. SEDERBURG

Lyle G. Sederburg, age 96 of Stanton, Iowa

Lyle Gustaf LeRoy Sederburg, the son of Edward W. and Hilma (Wenstrand) Sederburg, was born August 13, 1909 in Frankfort Township of Montgomery County, Iowa. He died on Monday, July 17, 2006 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 96 years, 11 months and 4 days.

Lyle was born and raised on a farm in Frankfort Township. He started working on the farm at age 10. He later worked for a time, in the construction of building roads. In the 1930's, he helped build old Highway 34.

Lyle was united in marriage to Helen Marie Crowe on August 27, 1930 in Red Oak, Iowa. He loved farming and farmed most of his life. In 1978, Lyle and Helen moved to their farm northwest of Stanton. He was a member of the Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton. Lyle was an avid story teller and jokester.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Helen on February 7, 1999, a daughter Lila Russell, grandson, Steve Downing, 3 sisters, Nora, Doris, Myrtle and 5 brothers, Edward, Hilmer, Ervin, Harry and Marion.

Lyle is survived by his children, Harold Sederburg of Stanton, Iowa, Richard Sederburg and wife Janet of Blair, Nebraska and Hilma Downing and husband Richard of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a son-in-law, Paul Russell of Corning, Iowa; 8 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild; brother, Milo Sederburg and wife Blanche of Red Oak, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

May God bless his memory and give strength to those who mourn.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, July 20, 2006 at 2:00 PM at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton, Iowa. Burial in the Mamre Cemetery , Stanton. Rev. Dr. Eric Kutzli, officiating. LILA MAY RUSSELL

Lila May Russell, age 74 of rural Adams County near Strand.

Lila May Russell, the daughter of Lyle and Helen (Crowe) Sederburg, was born December 4, 1931 at Malvern, Iowa. She died after a brief illness on Sunday, July 16, 2006 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 74 years, 7 months and 12 days.

Lila graduated from Coburg High School in l949. She was united in marriage to Paul Russell on June 19, 1951 at Red Oak, Iowa. While Paul was in the military, they lived in several different locations. After Paul's military service, they moved to a farm south of Red Oak. In l977, Lila and Paul then moved to a farm north of Stand.

Lila was confirmed at Mamrelund Lutheran Church and was a past member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School. She presently was a member of Stand Lutheran Church. Lila had a passion for music and playing the organ. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, crocheting, puzzles and fishing. Lila had a deep love for her grandchildren and treasured time spent with them.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Lila is survived by her husband, Paul Russell of rural Corning, Iowa; a daughter, Lynne Russell of rural Corning, Iowa; two sons, Miles Russell and wife Teresa of Red Oak, Iowa and Alan Russell and wife Beth of Red Oak, Iowa; 4 grandchildren, Michelle and Danielle Russell and Justin and Aaron Russell; her father, Lyle Sederburg of Stanton, Iowa who passed away on Monday, July 17, 2006; a sister, Hilma Downing and husband Richard of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 2 brothers, Harold Sederburg of Stanton, Iowa and Richard Sederburg and wife Janet of Blair, Nebraska; other relatives and a host of friends.

May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn.

RICHARD C. BECKETT

Richard Calvin Beckett, 80, of Villisca, died July 13, 2006 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, IA.

Richard C., son of Grace Pearl Ginn and George Albert Beckett, was born on September 24, 1925 in Gooding, Idaho.

The family returned to Iowa in 1928 and settled near Gravity, Iowa. Richard attended and graduated from Gravity High School. He served in the US Army during WWII as a machine gunner 1st class. In 1947 he was married to Marjorie Clark, to this union two sons were born, Gregory James and Jeffery Allen. After the war he worked for Stockstill Phillip 66 in Shenandoah, Iowa. Dick and Marge moved to Villisca after two years and he began to work at the Farmers Coop. Dick later owned and operated Beckett Oil Co. and station. After retiring from the station, Dick kept busy by working for the city of Villisca until the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife Marjorie, sons Greg and wife Brenda, and Jeff of Council Bluffs, Iowa, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Grace; sisters, Martha Mendenhall and Dorothy Walker; brothers, Robert and George Jr. Beckett.

Dick will always be remembered by his Tootsie Pops and the DX slogan ' known by the customers we keep'...

Graveside services were held Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at Villisca Cemetery with Rev. Gordon Scott and Rev. Jo Anne Johnson officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Villisca city park playground fund. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel of Clarinda was in charge of arrangements.

PHYLLIS MATILDA ANDERSON

Funeral services for Phyllis M. Anderson, age 78, of Red Oak, Iowa, were held on Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral home. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery , with Pastor Ron Fichter officiating.

Phyllis Matilda Anderson, the daughter of Clair and Ruth (Bishop) Aukland, was born September 27, 1927, at Silver City, Iowa.

Phyllis was raised southeast of Henderson, Iowa. She graduated from Henderson High School in l946, where she played basketball. Phyllis was united in marriage to Robert E. Anderson on September 24, 1947, at the Little Brown Church in the Vail at Nashua, Iowa. They made their home on a farm north of Stanton in l950. After Robert's death in 1969, Phyllis continued to live on the farm until she moved into Red Oak in l973. At different times in her life, Phyllis worked at Thos. D. Murphy Calendar Company, Red Oak; Egg Plant in Malvern; Union Carbide Battery Company, Red Oak for 29 years and as a cook for the Red Oak School District. Phyllis enjoyed sewing, playing cards and puzzles. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Eagles Lodge Auxiliary both of Red Oak.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert on November 16, 1969 and a son Danny.

Phyllis is survived by a son, Allan Anderson and wife Janette of rural Stanton, Iowa; two daughters, Judy Fichter and husband Ron of Clarksville, Tennessee and Jacquie Larson of Yukon, Oklahoma; 6 grandchildren, Zackery Anderson and wife Misty, Karey Anderson, Robbe Morris and wife Melisa, Matthew Larson and wife Lynn, Jeffrey D. Fichter and wife Jeanette, and Seth Fichter and wife Jennifer; 6 great-grandchildren, a brother, Thomas Aukland of Omaha, Nebraska, a brother-in-law Harold Anderson of Stanton, Iowa, a sister-in-law Fern Aukland of Red Oak, Iowa, other relatives and a host of friends.

Memorials to Tabor Lutheran Church or Red Oak Fire and Rescue. Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

MARTHA MENDENHALL

Graveside memorial committal services for Martha Mendenhall, age 92 of Bedford who died Friday, June 9, 2006 at the Good Samaritan Home in Villisca were held Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Martha Ellen (Beckett) Mendenhall was born March 29, 1914, in Gooding, Idaho the daughter of George Beckett and Grace (Ginn) Beckett. The family returned to Iowa in 1928 and settled near Gravity. She grew up attending school in Bedford, because her brother went to school there. However, graduated in 1932 from the Clarinda High School. After graduation she worked in Bedford at the Hamburger Inn. In 1938, she was united in marriage to Robert Anderson. Bob was in the service and they moved to several different Army bases. After World War II they returned to Bedford where Bob worked for the lumber yard and Martha worked for 25 years in the office on Main Street of Iowa Power. In 1963, Bob passed away and Martha continued working in Bedford. In 1968, she was united in marriage to S.K. “Kelite” Mendenhall who owned the Taylor County Motor Ford Garage. Upon their marriage, Martha quit working outside the home. She and Kelite truly enjoyed their nightly trips to check out the farm and cattle operation. Martha enjoyed knitting, sewing, reading and playing bridge. She was her ‘own person’, always pretty ‘spunky’! She was known for doing things her way! The true passion in Martha life was her sister Dorothy. Over the years the two of them were so close, that they were truly inseparable.

Left to cherish Martha’s memory are her brother Richard Beckett and wife Marge of Villisca; two step-daughters, Kae Eberle of Bedford; and Jean Killam and husband Herbert of Bedford; three nephews Gary Beckett of Des Moines; Greg Beckett and wife Brenda Lee of Villisca; and Jeff Beckett of Council Bluffs; a niece Barbara Beckett-Collier of Tulsa, Oklahoma; a step-granddaughter Victoria Guilliatt and husband Dick of Bedford and their children Stefanie and Timothy; and a sister-in-law Marion Anderson of North Platte, Nebraska; along with many friends.

Preceding Martha in death were parents George and Grace Beckett; her first husband Robert Anderson; her second husband Kelite Mendenhall; two brothers, George Jr. and Robert Beckett; and a dear sister, Dorothy Walker.

May God grant comfort and strength to those who mourn Martha’s passing.

DORIS PAULINE HOGBERG

Funeral services for Doris P. Hogberg, age 74, of Red Oak, Iowa, were held on Saturday, July 15, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stanton, Iowa, with Pastor Paul Warder, officiating. Burial was in Mission Covenant Cemetery in Stanton.
Doris Pauline Hogberg, the daughter of Joseph and Edith (Bradley) Golay, was born August 29, 1931, at Pickering, Missouri.

Doris was raised near Pickering, Missouri. Later, the family moved to Clarinda, Iowa, where Doris graduated from high school. She received her teachers training and certificate at Clarinda College. After college, Doris taught 3rd grade in Stanton for a total of 5 years. She was united in marriage to Melvin Hogberg on June 6, 1954, in Stanton, Iowa. They made their home on their farm south of Red Oak. She took pride in her family and working on their farm. Doris loved her grandchildren and spending time with them. She also enjoyed reading and her garden. Doris was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church and Covenant Women in Stanton, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters and 4 brothers.

Doris is survived by her husband, Melvin Hogberg of Red Oak, Iowa; 3 sons, Greg Hogberg and wife Becky of Red Oak, Iowa, Doug Hogberg and wife Cheryl of Stanton, Iowa and Gary Hogberg of Elkhorn, Iowa; 6 grandchildren, Nicholas, Molly, Alyssa, Derick, Kelsey and Kayla; a sister, Mrs. Alice Garvin of Des Moines, Iowa, a brother, George Golay of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, other relatives and host of friends.

A memorial is being established in her name. Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
