James "Jim" Lee Telford
September 16, 1930 - January 3, 2007

A memorial has been established for West Avenue Baptist Church Westwood Center.

James “Jim” Lee Telford, 76, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 12:17 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2007, at New London Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born September 16, 1930 in rural Ainsworth, Iowa, he was the son of Martin and Gwendolyn Givans Telford. On January 22, 1950 he married Doris Jean Johnson at First Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. She died November 1, 1999.

Mr. Telford was a 1948 graduate of Winfield High School. He worked for 34 years as a gas superintendent for ISU and then IES Company, retiring in 1994.

He was a member of West Avenue Baptist Church where he was an elder. He and his wife Doris led a Bible Study group for many years. He also enjoyed working in the yard and fishing.

Survivors include two daughters, Jacque (Bill) Bice and Charise (Chuck) White both of Burlington; three grandchildren, Bill (Lucy) Bice, Jr., Kristin Bice and Wesley White; two great grandchildren, Matthew and Allison Bice; one sister, Ruth (Hal) Hotle of Bentonsport, Iowa; half sister, Sue (Steve) Shields of St. Paul, Minnesota; half brother, Mike (Sherry) Telford of Woodward, Iowa; and nieces and nephews.

His wife Doris; son, Terry Telford; and parents preceded him in death.

Friends may call from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Frances Sophia Thye
August 9, 1908 - December 2, 2006

Mrs. Frances Sophia Thye, 98, of Burlington died at 7:59 AM Saturday, December 2nd, 2006 at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born August 9, 1908, in Wapello, Iowa, she was the daughter of Adolph and Katherine Horn Schachel. On October 26, 1932 she married Emil Thye in Burlington. He died April 15, 1969.

She was a graduate of Burlington High School and worked as a cook in food service for James Madison and Horace Mann Middle Schools for 7 years and was also a homemaker. She was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church including the Young at Heart Group and Miriam Circle. Mrs. Thye enjoyedembroidery, yard work, gardening and loved spending time with all her family.

Survivors include two daughters, Leah (Jerry) Mattox of West Burlington,

Lois (Don) Traman of Burlington; and one son William (Sharon) Thye of Burlington; 7 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; one brother Walter Schachel of Ft. Madison; and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents, husband, one granddaughter, two sisters and one brother preceded her in death.

Martha Nelson Thye
December 4, 1916 - December 28, 2005

-Visitation: Friday, December 30th from 2:00 to 8:00 PM in Lunning Chapel
- Family will receive Friends: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday in Lunning Chapel
- Funeral Service: Saturday, December 31, 2005 11:00 AM in Lunning Chapel
- Interment: Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery

Martha C. Nelson Thye, 89 years old, died at 5:30 PM Thursday, December 28, 2005 at the Burlington Care Center after a short illness. She was born December 4, 1916, in Mediapolis, Iowa, the daughter of Victor and Matilda Anderson Nelson. On May 18, 1940 she married Elmer Albert Thye in Danville, Iowa. He died in July 1970.

Martha graduated from Chillicothe Teachers College in Chillicothe, Missouri. Martha was a teacher and a devoted homemaker, farmer in the Oakville, Iowa area and a lifelong resident of Southeast Iowa. She retired and moved to West Burlington, Iowa, in the late 1980’s. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church of rural West Burlington. After retiring, Martha was particularly happy in the company of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also discovered great enjoyment in sewing and ceramics. Martha was a caring and generous woman who was always ready to help her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by many.

Survivors include two sons, Henry Victor Thye of Oakville, Iowa and Richard Elmer Thye of Fort Madison, Iowa; five grandchildren Brian Thye, Lora Thye, Shane Thye, Kelly Thye and Shannon Thye; five great grandchildren; sister Velma Nelson of Danville, Iowa; and sister-in-law Margaret Ann Nelson of Burlington, Iowa.

Preceding her in death are her husband, parents, her daughter, Joyce Ann Thye, who was killed in an explosion at IAAP, her three brothers, Ralph Nelson, Milton Nelson and Virgil Nelson, who was killed in WWII.

A memorial has been established at the Peace Lutheran Church of rural West Burlington, Iowa.

Mary Anne Thye
March 31, 1923 - January 17, 2007

School Scholarship Fund in Red Oak, TX

Mary Anne Thye, 73, of West Burlington, Iowa, died at 10:10 a.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born March 31, 1923 in Aledo, Illinois, she was the daughter of Dale and Ruby Ashley Hyett.

On April 4, 1954 she married Richard Thye at Oak Street Baptist Church in Burlington. He died October 6, 1982.

Mrs. Thye was of the Methodist faith. She worked at various positions for Wal-mart.

Survivors include two daughters, Cathy (Richard) Rappenecker of Springfield, Illinois and Diane (Roger) Pinkert of Red Oak, Texas; five grandchildren, Elizabeth and Ben Rappenecker of Springfield and Travis, Tyler, and Kailee Pinkert of Red Oak; and four sisters, Eloise (Dick) Robinson of Burlington, Jeanne Hyett of Mountain View, California, June Boldt of Moline, Illinois, and Patti (Gary) Hastings of Redwood City, California.
Her husband and parents preceded her in death.

Jean E. Tietge
January 30,1925 - September 29, 2005

-Visitation: Friday, October 2, 2005 at 9:00 to 6:00 PM in Lunning Chapel
-Services: Monday, October 3, 2005 at 11:00 AM in Aspen Grove Cemetery for a Graveside Memorial Service.

Jean E. Tietge, 80 a long time resident of Burlington died at 12:40 p.m. on Thursday, September 29, 2005, at Manor Care Nursing Home in Cedar Rapids.

Born January 30, 1925 in Woodward, she was the daughter of John Cochran and Elvira Adamson Dailey. On December 21, 1941 she married Robert H. Tietge in Kahoka, Missouri. He died on June 2, 1992.

Mrs. Tietge was a graduate of Boone High School and Burlington Beauty Academy. She was of the Baptist faith.

She worked at Winegard Antenna for 17 years and J.C. Penney’s for 7 years, retiring in 1979. She was a member of VFW Post 10102 Auxiliary. She enjoyed socializing and playing cards.

Survivors include her daughter, Carol Dietz of Las Vegas, Nevada; one grandson, Timothy Bishop of Cedar Rapids; four great grandchildren, Natalee, Renee, Ashley and Thor; one brother, John Dailey of Jacksonville, Florida; one sister, Cecile Miller of Boone; and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband; one son, David Tietge; seven sisters; and two brothers preceded her in death.

Memorials have been established for the Arthritis Foundation and American Lung Foundation.

Rudd Toothacre
May 29, 1930 ~ January 16, 2009

Rudd Toothacre, 78, of Hemit, California and formerly of Burlington died Friday, January 16, 2009, in California.

Born May 29, 1930 in Burlington, he was the son of Dr. Harold A. and Soma Lucetta Pilger Toothacre. In 1955 he married Ella Marie Jenkins of Farmington.

Mr. Toothacre earned his business degree at the University of Denver. He worked for 13 years for Braniff Airways at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, Burlington and Denver.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Toothacre of Hemit; one son, Harold Allen (Lori) Toothacre of San Diego, California; one daughter, Lynnette Marie (John) Nichols of Athena, Oregon; five grandchildren, Danny, Ricky and Sarah Toothacre and Colleen and Jeannise Nichols; one brother, Rod Toothacre of San Diego; two nephews, Mark and Scott; one niece, Lisa; and two step nieces, donna and Debbie.

Dorothy "Dottie" May Tucker
August 5, 1923 - April 29, 2006

- Memorial Funeral Service: Thursday, May 4th, 1:00 PM in Lunning Chapel

According to her wishes, the body of Mrs. Tucker has been cremated

Dorothy “Dottie” May Tucker, 82, of Burlington and formerly of Farmington, Iowa and Daytona Beach, Florida died Saturday, April 29, 2006, at Rosebush Gardens Assisted Living in Burlington.

Born August 5, 1923 in Rock Island, Illinois she was the daughter of William and Beata Kopping Miller. She married Merle Tucker in on February 17, 1946 in Ft. Madison, Iowa. He died on March 27, 1970.

Dorothy worked with her husband in their family owned grocery store, Tucker’s IGA in Farmington, Iowa. She was a member of Eastern Star and was a Girl Scout leader in Farmington. She took flying lessons late in life and enjoyed traveling, especially overseas. She was able to ride on the Concord and on the Queen Elizabeth II. She and her companion, George Duvall, flew many different places including flight breakfasts and fly-ins.

She is survived by two daughters, Janis Hasenmiller of Morton Grove, Illinois and Cindy (Randy) Brackett of Burlington; five grandchildren, Jeff (Heather) Hasenmiller, Melyssa (Jordan) Mercer, Brandon Oakley, Michelle Brackett, and Melissa (Jason) Earl; three great grandchildren, Maddox, Kyle and Casey; two brothers, Richard “Dick” (Edith) Miller of Brunswick, Maine and Robert “Bob” (Mary) Miller of Cullman, Alabama; several nieces and nephews.

Her parents, husband, and companion preceded her in death.

The memorial funeral service for Dorothy will be held on Thursday, May 4th, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. in Lunning Chapel. The Reverend Carl Engstrom will officiate. There will be no visitation. According to her wishes, Mrs. Tucker has been cremated.

A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

Barry Turner
October 11, 1960 - April 6, 2006

Barry Turner, 43, of Montrose, formerly of Burlington and Fort Madison, died at his residence on Thursday, April 6, 2006.

Born October 11, 1962, in Missouri he was the son of Robert and Bertha Turner. James and Valeeta Austin adopted and raised him.

Mr. Turner worked as a welder for Gregory’s in Fort Madison. He was a high school graduate. He enjoyed horseback ridding and riding four wheelers.

Survivors include, one daughter, Megan Turner of Dunnell, Minnesota; one son, Andrew Keever of Burlington; two stepsons, Jamie Remick of Burlington, and Christopher Sipes of Oquawka; his adoptive parents James and Carol Austin of Keokuk; one grandson,Brayden Godwin; four brother, Robert Turner of Missouri, William Turner of Ohio, Bruce Turner of Burlington, and Buren Turner of Montrose; three sisters, Barbara Keller of Florida; Beverly Turner of Missouri, and Betty Smith of Louisiana; two stepbrothers; Rocky Helwig and Cody Helwig; and one stepsister, Heather Helwig.

His parents, his adopted mother Veleeta Helwig, one stepdaughter, and one stepsister preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
