DONALD LeROY BAKER
Donald LeRoy Baker was born Aug 4, 1946 at Clarinda, IA to Samuel Lewis and Jessie Isabel (Fail) Baker. He entered into rest Thursday, Feb 1, 2007 at Mercy Hospital, Council Bluffs, IA.
Donald worked for Waldo and Jerry Penton on the farm, Fullerton Lumber Yard, Brown Sanitation, and most recently was area maintenance supervisor for Motel 6.
Donald served from 1976 to 1997 on the Villisca Fire Department. He especially enjoyed country music, the Christmas holidays and decorations for the kids, Iowa Hawkeyes and Kansas City Chiefs. Donald was a lifelong member of the Advent Christian Church having been baptized and married there. On June 25, 1988 he was married to Donna Freshour at the church. His family was very important to him and was always there when needed. He had a special love for his daughter, Jaden Baker.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Albert Baker; sister Dorothy Hamner; brothers-in-law Lemoyne Salway, Leo Farlin, Max Hamner; and infant sisters Martha and Catherine Baker.
Donald is survived by his wife, Donna of Villisca, IA; sisters Evelyn Salway, Villisca, Sharon Farlin, Emerson; brother Willis Baker and wife Jean of Red Oak, IA; sister-in-law Rita Booher, Shenandoah, IA; stepchildren Donald Sexton and special friend Connie Gaunt, Villisca, IA, Teresa Nelson and fianc‚ Mike Farley, Onawa, IA, Stephanie Gay, Tulsa, OK; adopted daughter, Jaden Baker, Villisca, IA; step grandchildren Kyle Gay, Heather Baker, Daniel Sexton, Cheyenne Nelson, Shelby Nelson, Dominick Sexton, Olivia Sexton, Christian Sexton; nieces and nephews Joe and Darrell Farlin, Jeff Salway, Shala Scott, Mike, Brad and Jerry Baker, Bill Oetken, and Becky Myers; and many friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb 5, 2007 at Advent Christian Church, Villisca, IA, with Pastor Chris Hall officiating. Burial was at Arlington Cemetery
with processional led by the Villisca Fire Department. Memorials are suggested to Villisca Fire & Rescue. Wolfe Funeral Home of Villisca was in charge of arrangements.
TIM EUGENE GOODVIN
A memorial service for Tim "Hoot" Eugene Goodvin, age 52, of Corning, IA, were held at 2 p.m., on Monday, January 29, 2007, at Coen-Beaty-Pearson, in Corning, IA. Reverend Ken Rummer officiated.
"Hoot" was born on December 28, 1954, in Corning, IA, the son of Bryan and Edna (Lacox) Goodvin. He graduated from Corning High School in 1973 and attended SWCC for a short time. He married Joyce Figgins on March 9, 1998.
Through the years, "Hoot" worked for Burlington Northern, farmed in the Adams County area and work for D & L in Red Oak. He was also employed by Wal-mart in Atlantic in the maintenance department.
Hoot loved to play football, take walks, go camping and spent lots of time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed music and was a great singer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce, of Villisca, IA; sons, Bryan, of Zwingle, IA, and Adam of Omaha, NE; daughter, Jessi and husband, Jason Oathoudt, of Nodaway, IA; step-daughter, Jeanette and husband Vincent; brothers, Jim, of Gilbert, AZ, and Larry and wife, Bonnie, of Corning, IA; sister, Julie Henningsen, of New Bern, NC; and four grandchildren.
Memorial contribution may be directed to the family in Tim's name.
ESTHER HOWARD HEDSTROM
Esther Howard was born Feb. 6, 1917, on a farm north of Nodaway, the fourth child of Henry and Clara Hyzer Howard. She started to school at Nodaway Consolidated School in the new brick building in Nodaway. Her last two years of high school were spent in Villisca where she graduated with the VHS class of 1934.
She married Arvin Hedstrom and they were the parents of three children. Esther lived the life of a farm wife for the first 14 years of the marriage, picking corn by hand, milking 20 cows by hand, raising and dressing chickens, planting a large garden, canning, all of the work typical of the times. She then began teaching country school at Vandevender School in Page County, went on to Grant, Essex and Treynor schools and ended her teaching career spending 12 years as a reading specialist at Lewis Central Middle School in Council Bluffs. Esther loved learning; she began her teaching career with only a high school normal training certificate and ended with a Master's Degree. She encouraged her grandchildren to go on to higher education.
After retirement, she enjoyed having more time to spend with family, traveling with friends, swimming class, reading, craftwork, online shopping, collecting bears and church work. After moving to the Good Samaritan Center last year, she returned to her teaching background and created a job for herself as "Hall Monitor" keeping track of all the coming and going of the residents and visitors. She maintained her good mind and her spirit and was still "giving orders" up to her last breaths.
Her parents, her husband, her brothers, Andrew and Dr. Fredrick Howard; sister, Elizabeth Swanson and daughter Mary Lou Albertson preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter Susie Enarson and husband Tom; son Harold Hedstrom and wife Sandy, all of Villisca, and son-in-law Jim Albertson of Carroll; 8 grandchildren and spouses, 12 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren also survive her. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Memorials may be directed to the Nodaway United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 29, 2007 at the Nodaway United Methodist Church in Nodaway. Reverend Gordon Scott will officiate and burial will be in the Nodaway Cemetery . Visitation is 4 until 6 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca.
JOHN RAY STRAND
John Ray Strand was born December 9, 1957 to Charlotte and Raymond Strand in Council Bluffs, Iowa and passed away at his home in Osage Beach, Missouri, on January 18, 2007 after a lengthy illness due to cancer. John donated his body to the Genesis Research Program, which studies his type of cancer amongst other medical conditions.
John was a member of the Harper Chapel Methodist Church in Osage Beach, Mo. John was an avid reader, spending a great deal of time doing so. He as well loved doing woodwork, and spending time out on the lake with his family. John graduated from the Villisca Community High School in 1977. On July 5th, 1980 he married Connie Smith of Clarinda, Iowa. Most of their married life they lived in the Northwest Missouri area. John was employed as a truck driver for over 15 years, then at a marina in Osage Beach for the last 2 years.
He is survived by his wife Connie and 4 children, Jett, Jovi and Sean Strand at home in Osage Beach MO and Traci Strand of Pensacola, FL, and her daughter Lilli. THELMA ARLEAN THOMPSON
Thelma Arlean Thompson, 77 of Villisca died on Sunday, January 21, 2007 at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha. She was born on March 14, 1929 in Shenandoah, Iowa; a daughter to the late Clark and Pearl Irene (Jackson) Stephens.
Arlean married Kenneth Blank in 1947 and he preceded her in death in 1982. She then married Richard Thompson in 1994 in Villisca.
She worked for eight years at Villisca Good Samaritan Center and was employed at the Villisca American Legion for eleven years until her retirement in 1992. She was a member of the Villisca United Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the Eagles in Atlantic and Arlean headed up the American Red Cross Blood Drive for many years. When Arlean was a teenager, she and her sisters sang together on KMA960. Arlean enjoyed her new house for the last 3 years. She enjoyed crafts and collected TY Beanie Babies, angels and toothpick holders.
Her family members include her husband: Richard Thompson of Villisca; her daughter: Vickie (Richard) Cosaert of Logan, Iowa; three sons: Kenneth Blank of Villisca, Curtis Blank of Villisca and Robert (Teri) Blank of Red Oak; twelve grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; her beloved pet: Buddie and two sisters: Opal Maxine (William) Danielson of Desert Hot Springs, California and Iva (Howard) Connor of Salem, Oregon. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister: Hazel Darrlean Allumbaugh.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30AM on Wednesday, January, 24, 2007 at the Wolfe Funeral Home, 201 E. 4th St., Villisca. Reverend Gordon Scott will officiate and burial will follow at the Villisca Cemetery . The family will greet guests on Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00PM at the funeral home in Villisca.
Memorials may be made to the Villisca Fire and Rescue.
JAMES L. BLACK
James L. Black, 71 of Mesa, AZ passed away Wed. Jan. 17, 2007 in Mesa, AZ. He was born Nov. 25, 1935 in Braddyville, IA to Velda Shipley & Ernie Fleharty. Jim graduated from Villisca High School in 1954 then joined the Navy where he served from 1954-1958. Jim married Sandra K. Edwards in 1961. Jim and Sandy resided in Red Oak, IA until 1993 when Jim retired from AT&T/Qwest after 31 years of service and they moved to Mesa, AZ to be close to their 2 sons.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother: Velda, father: Ernie, step father: Sonny; half brothers: Leonard, Micky & Terry and a half sister Connie.
Jim is survived by his wife of 45 years Sandy; sons: Corey and his wife Brenda, Brian and his wife Josephine and grandson: Hayden; sisters: Shirley Vest of Overland Park, KS.and Mavis DiMaro of Omaha, NE ; brothers: Dennis Black of Villisca, IA and Randy Mattson of Red Oak, IA and numerous nieces and nephews.

LEO MILLER
Funeral Services for Leo Miller, age 74 of New Market who died Thursday, January 18, 2007 in Lincoln, Nebraska were held Monday, January 22, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Clarinda. Interment was held in the Covenanter Cemetery
in rural Page County, Iowa. Memorials can be directed to the Trinity Presbyterian Church or the New Market United Methodist Church. Leo Russell Miller was born September 24, 1932, on the family farm, three miles south of Clarinda, Page County, Iowa the sixth of seven children born to Ross Edward Miller and Cassie Felicia (Lawson) Miller. As a child, he attended the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Clarinda. He attended the Olive Branch Country School to the eighth grade, and graduated from the Clarinda High School with the Class of 1951. He then attended the Clarinda Community College for two years where he received his Associates Degree. It was during this time, while out at the skating rink in Clarinda, he met Normalee Webb. Leo answered the call to serve his country by entering the United States Army in 1953, and was honorably discharged in 1955. Leo and Normalee were united in marriage on August 17, 1955, in New Market, Iowa. The couple farmed southwest of Clarinda for a few years and in 1958, they moved to a farm north of New Market where he farmed with Normalee's grandfather. In 1974, they moved to Normalee's grandfather's farm where they have continued to live. Leo was a member of the New Market United Methodist Church, having served on various church offices and boards. He had been a member of the New Market School Board for many years; a member of the Clarinda Co-Op Board; the Taylor County Veteran's Affairs; a current member of the Farmer's Mutual Telephone Company in Stanton; the New Market Foundation and the Taylor County Cattleman's Association.
Leo enjoyed farming, but his cow herds and calving were his passion. He likened himself as 'The Good Shepherd' of his herd. He liked photography and had an extensive collection of old home movies, pictures and camcorder videos of family and community events. He enjoyed sports, not only as a spectator, but had participated in basketball and football in his younger years. Leo was a 'people person' and he has always been very close to his family, enjoying family get-togethers whenever possible. He was a good neighbor and could be counted on by others to always lend a hand. He possessed a tremendous sense of humor and could appreciate a good joke, and sometimes a bad one!
Left to cherish Leo's memory are his loving wife of 52 years, Normalee Miller of New Market; two daughters, Brenda Herzberg and husband Brian of Villisca; Margaret Brown and husband Mark of Clarinda; a brother, Dale Miller of Clarinda; three sisters, Marilyn Ives and husband Myron of Clarinda; Norma Jean Hall and husband Bob of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Joyce Warder and husband Jerry of Dallas, Texas; six grandchildren, Nathan and Anna Marlay; Kelli and Matthew Herzberg; Lexie and Gracie Brown; three step-grandchildren, Laura Brown; Mr. and Mrs. Ryan Marlay and children; and Mr. and Mrs. John Marlay, Jr.; a son-in-law, John Marlay of Selma, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Bill Stephan of Dallas, Texas; a sister-in-law, Audrey Miller Bridie of Clarinda; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and a community of friends.
Preceding Leo in death are his parents; a daughter Lora Marlay; a brother Lawson Miller; a sister, Elaine Stephan; and a sister-in-law, Gerry Miller.

RENEE J. DeBOLT
Renee J. DeBolt, age 80, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away, Monday, January 15, 2007 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Renee Juliette DeBolt was born March 22, 1926 in Castellane, France the daughter of Albert and Claire (Boyer) Dol. She was raised in France receiving her baccalaureate in 1944. During World War II she met Ardith "Dale" DeBolt and traveled back to the United States through Ellis Island and located in Gravity, Iowa with the DeBolt family. Renee and Dale were married June 13, 1947 in Sidney, Iowa. They lived in the Malvern, Emerson, Red Oak, and Stanton areas before moving to Fairfield, Iowa. They had been living in Fairfield for seven years when Dale passed away on December 22, 1985. The following year Renee moved back to Red Oak. Over the years Renee worked as an LPN in many nursing homes where they lived. While in Red Oak she worked for the Thomas D. Murphy Company as a secretary and the Red Coach Inn in the housekeeping department.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; her daughter: Sandra; son: Jerry; sisters: Helen DeFazio; Yvonne Pick; and Jeanne Barbier; and brother: Louis Dol.
Survivors include her son: Nick DeBolt and wife Jeanie of Davenport, Iowa; daughter: Sharon DeBolt of Phoenix, Arizona; daughter-in-law: Teresa DeBolt of Glenwood, Iowa; five grandchildren: Jessica Holbrook and husband Jared of Storm Lake, Iowa; Jacob DeBolt of Glenwood, Iowa; Adam DeBolt of Glenwood, Iowa; Kelly DeBolt of Davenport, Iowa; and Trisha DeBolt of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; brothers-in-law: Les DeBolt and wife Evelyn of Red Oak, Iowa; Robert DeBolt and wife Marge of Charles City, Iowa; and Herb De Bolt and wife Lorraine of Clarinda, Iowa; sisters-in-law: Vivian Hicks of Emerson, Iowa; Viola McVay of Red Oak, Iowa; Myrna DeBolt of Carson, Washington; and Lucienne Dol of France; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 1 PM Friday, January 19, 2007 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Father Ken Gross officiating. Burial will be in the Emerson, Iowa Cemetery . Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Thursday, January 18, 2007 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

DAVIS DELVER WAGAMAN
Funeral Services for Davis Wagaman, age 76 of Villisca, Iowa who died Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at Immanuel Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska were held Saturday, January 20, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Villisca, Iowa. Visitation with the family was at the Methodist Church 9:30 A.M. until service time. Interment was held in the Villisca Cemetery
in Villisca, Iowa with military rites by Detachment 2, Company B, 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry. Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Hospital. Davis Delver Wagaman was born May 14, 1930, to Cleve Austin and Ona May (Higgins) Wagaman in Clarinda, Iowa, the youngest of seven children. Davis married Sharon Draper, June 24, 1955, at the Methodist Church, Villisca, Iowa. To this union three children were born; Kurt Alan, 1957, Lori Jene, 1958 and Lisa Ann, 1962. All were born in Denver, Colorado.
Davis was a 1949 Villisca High School graduate and joined the National Guard when they were first Federally Recognized in 1947 into Company F-2nd Battalion-168th Infantry 34th Division and retired after twenty one years out of what was then, Detachment 1-Company A Battalion 1-168th Infantry as a Staff Sergeant. He enjoyed his time at Guard Camp, two weeks a year and "fighting" the floods and the "Weeny War" at the Rath Meat Packing Plant in Waterloo, Iowa. He was a Mason in Colorado, a member of the Villisca American Legion and the United Methodist Church, Villisca, Iowa. He enjoyed playing cards, gardening and yard work (until he was unable to do so), reading, traveling, telling stories, horseback riding and hunting. Davis especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He worked for Draper Produce in Villisca; Rainbow Bread Company; Puritan Pie Company and Randy's Meat Company; all in Colorado and owned and operated an A & W Restaurant in Evergreen, Colorado. He moved his family back to Villisca in 1974 and worked as a machine operator for Eaton Corporation in Shenandoah, Iowa for eighteen years before retiring.
Left to cherish Davis's memory are his wife, Sharon Wagaman of Villisca, Iowa; children, Kurt Wagaman of New Market, Iowa, Lori Wagaman of Villisca, Iowa, Lisa Sparks of Glenwood, Iowa;five grandchildren, Andrea Emery of New Market, Iowa, Jessica Kamerman and husband Tyler of Playa Del Rey, California, Kyle Wagaman of Tarkio, Missouri, Cheyenne Sparks of Villisca, Iowa, Cody Sparks of Glenwood, Iowa,; three great grandchildren, Shalori Bond of Parnell, Missouri, Zackary Bond of New Market, Iowa, Tristen Emery of Parnell, Missouri; many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Davis in death were his parents; sisters, Lucille Hazelton and Helen Lewis; brothers, Fred Wagaman, Harold Wagaman, Robert Wagaman and Orvis Wagaman; sisters-in-law, Amy Wagaman, Maxinne Wagaman, and Nina Wagaman; brothers-in-law, Glen Hazelton, Clyde Lewis, and Grant Whitney and his step mother, Ella Wagaman.

JUNE ELIZABETH PALMQUIST
June Elizabeth Palmquist, the daughter of Clement and Margaret Jones, was born June 4, 1932 at Wales, Iowa. She died on Thursday, January 11, 2007 at Select Specialty Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 74 years, 7 months and 7 days.
June was raised in the Wales community where she attended school and in 1949, graduated from Wales-Lincoln High School. She began her working career with Dr. Spicer, a dentist in Red Oak. While working for Dr Spicer, she met James. On March 2, 1952, June and James were united in marriage near Wales, Iowa. To this union, they were blessed with three children, their pride and joy. They made their home on a farm south of Stanton, Iowa. June continued to work for Dr. Spicer and Dr. Wolfe. She also worked with Studio Girl Cosmetics and enjoyed helping design the window displays for Connor's dress shop. June was an active member of Christian Women's Club of Red Oak for many years. June held many offices in the local club along with being past chairman. She also served as area representative. June treasured time spent with her family and friends. She enjoyed working with her hands, crafting, sewing and baking for loved ones. She also had a knack for interior decorating. June was an active member of Faith Community Church in Red Oak. She had a heart for children and enjoyed working with them at Awana's. June delighted in being a part of the planning committee for the Wales Alumni banquets and with her Neighborhood Club. While June loved her family and friends with all her heart, more importantly, she loved the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Lila Mae Cooper.
June is survived by her husband, James E. Palmquist of Red Oak, IA; two daughters: Janet Kahnk and husband Patrick of Omaha, NE and Jolene Goodsell and husband Doug of Watkins, IA; son: Jerald Palmquist and wife Chrissi of Stanton, IA; 9 grandchildren: Jessica, Andrea and Brandon Kahnk; Zachary, Ellie and Amanda Goodsell; Christopher, Austin and Ashley Palmquist; other relatives and a host of friends.
