October 11, 1912 - October 24, 2005

Helen I. Miller Underwood, 93, of New London formerly of Burlington, died at 2:45 a.m. Monday, October 24, 2005, at New London Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born October 11, 1912, in Mount Union, she was the daughter of Ora and Minnie Anderson miller. On Dec 22, 1932, she married Otis F. Underwood in Burlington. He died December 8,1966.

Mrs. Underwood was a homemaker. She worked for Selby's Produce, Benner's Bakery and was a certified nurses assistant for Park manor in Burlington, Burlington Medical Center and Bugg's Nursing home in New London. She also worked for Hotel Burlington.

She was a 1930 graduate of Mount Union High School. She was a member of the former Trinity Methodist Church and former member of Royal Neighbors Club. She enjoyed quilting.

Survivors include five daughters, Loretta Bliss, Martha Morse and Sandy Parton, all of Burlington, Ruth Fischer of New London and Ramona Underwood of Bloomfield; three sons, Gerald "Pete" Underwood and George Underwood of Fort Madison; 15 Grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; numerous great-great-grandchildren; numerous stepgrandchildren; numerous stepgreat-grandchildren; and one sister, Margaret Culler of New London.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Robert Underwood, one daughter, Phyllis Moser, her parents, one brother, two sisters, on grandson and three stepgreat-grandsons.

A memorial has been established.

Barbara E. Upton
July 4, 1934 - May 2, 2007

Barbara E. Upton, 72, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 3:15 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2007, at Great River Medical in West Burlington, Iowa.

Born July 4, 1934 in Allerton, Wayne County, Iowa, she was the daughter of the Rev. Carl G. and Edith Emma Halfhill Johnson. On April 15, 1956 she married Donald Clifford Upton in Burlington. He died August 4, 1986.

Mrs. Upton was a 1952 graduate of Burlington High School and a 1955 graduate of Burlington School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse for 52 years working at Burlington Hospital and various care centers, including Burlington Care Center. She retired in January of 2007.

She was an active member of Parkside First Baptist Church where she served on several boards, sang in the church choir and was an adult Sunday school teacher. She also was active with class reunions.

Survivors include one daughter, Karen E. (Jack) Lancaster of Des Moines; one son, DeWayne (Julie) Upton of Greeneville, Tennessee; three grandchildren, Cole, Dakota and Cheynne Upton; and nieces and nephews.

Her husband, parents, two brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.

Nedra F. Utt
June 19, 1916 - January 11, 2007

-Friends May Call: Monday, January 15th from 8:00 until 8:00 PM in Lunning Chapel.
-Family Visitation: Tuesday, January 16th, 9:00 until 10:00 AM in Lunning Chapel.
-Funeral Service: Tuesday, January 16th, 10:00 AM in Lunning Chapel
The Reverend Tom Smith will officiate.
-Interment: Aspen Grove Cemetery , Burlington, Iowa

Nedra F. Utt, 90, of Burlington, Iowa died at 8:20 a.m. Thursday, January 11, 2007, at Fort Madison Health Care Center.

Born June 19, 1916 in rural Davis County, Iowa, she was the daughter of Orgie Otis and Vinnie Flo Frances Burton. On April 14, 1934 she married Murl L. Utt in Lancaster, Missouri. He died May 17, 1985.

She worked at Niesner Brothers Department Store in Burlington for 27 years and was a greeter at K-mart.

Mrs. Utt was a member of First Christian Church. Her hobbies were golfing, bowling, playing cards and taking care of her houseplants. She did volunteer work in the church office helping to prepare the newsletter for many years and baked cookies for Sunday church.

Survivors include one daughter, Jane Connors of Burlington; one son, James Dean Utt of Denver, Colorado; ten grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; two brothers, Leo Burton and Boyd Burton booth of Bloomfield, Iowa; and one sister, Helen Plotz of St. Petersburg, Florida.

Her husband; son, Donald Wayne Utt; grandson; parents; six brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

Floyd Van Carden
April 26, 1924 - April 27, 2006

-Friends May Call: Sunday, April 30th, 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM in Lunning Chapel

-Family will receive Friends: Sunday, April 30th, 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in Lunning Chapel
- Funeral Service: Monday, May 1st, 10:00 AM in Danville United Methodist Church
The Revs. Robert Patton and Richard Latta will officiate.
-Interment: Jaggar Cemetery , rural DanvilleHenry County Honor Guard will conduct military rites.

Floyd Van Carden, 82, died at 3:50 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2006, at the Danville Care Center.

He was born April 26, 1924 at Burlington, the son of Max A. and Mary L. Van Osdol Carden. He graduated from Danville High School in 1942. He attended Business College in Burlington. He married Marian D. Trevitt on September 8, 1946 in Mediapolis.

He joined the Navy in 1944. After training in the states he was sent to the Philippines, then to Japan and assigned to a Naval patrol craft. At the close of the war, his ship took the Japanese officials from the dock in Tokyo, to the battleship Missouri, out in the harbor, where the peace treaty was signed. After his discharge in 1946 he farmed with his father on the family Century Farm.

He was a life-long member of the Danville United Methodist Church. He served his community on a number of boards, including church, FHA, Farm Bureau, Danville Community School, Jaggar Cemetery , Danville Telephone Company, West Burlington and F & M Banks, and Des Moines County Mutual Insurance. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 7641 in New London.

He enjoyed farming, working in his shop, traveling, reading, his friends and especially his family.

His parents, a son Steven, a sister, Kay Wilke, and two grandchildren preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of Middletown, daughter Joyce (Jack) Cross of Middletown, son Jerry (Tim) Carden of Urbana, IL. Four grandchildren, Jason (Christy) Cross, Lenexa, KS; Jana Cross, Middletown; Jessica Cross, Cedar Rapids; and Brian (Amanda) Carden, Lacon, IL. Three great-grandchildren are Max, Sam and Will Cross of Lenexa, KS.

Memorials may be made to the Danville United Methodist Church or Jaggar Cemetery.

Ralph K. Van Order
August 3, 1924 - February 24, 2006

-Graveside Memorial Funeral Service and Inurnment:

According to Mr. Van Order's wishes his body has been cremated.

Ralph K. Van Order , 81, of Burlington, died at 6:14 PM on Friday, February 24, 2006 at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born August 3, 1924, in Rushville, Ill., he was the son of William Edward and Katherine “Katie” Conrad Van Order.

Mr. Van Order was a traffic manager for General Electric for 22 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a 1942 graduate of Rushville High School. He was an army veteran serving in World War II with the rank of Pfc. He was a former member of the moose and eagles. He enjoyed bowling.

Survivors include, two sons, Kenny Van Order of Burlington; Johnny Van Order of California; his caretaker Norma L. Sink of Burlington; 5 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother Robert Van Order of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; one sister, Faye Steele of Gary, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, six sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.

A memorial has been established.

Elly Wachter
April 11, 1933 - January 7, 2006

Mrs. Elly Wachter, 72, of Burlington, died at 10:05 AM Saturday, January 7, 2006 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Born April 11, 1933 in Tübingen, Germany, she was the daughter of Karl and Suzanna Schuster Buck. She married Joseph Wachter at New Ulm, Germany on July 2, 1958. She became an American Citizen on Flag Day 1963.

She and her ancestors were traditional Lutherans. Locally she was a member of the Orchard City Questors Club. She has been an antique dealer, and an avid antique, artifact, rock collector and gardener. She traveled extensively with her husband during his military and corporate assignments.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Wachter of Burlington; one daughter, Pamela (Michael) Mace of Burlington; three sons, Rodney Wachter, and Randall (Stacey) Wachter, both of Burlington, and Victor Wachter of Norwood, Mass; five grandchildren, Christopher and Ryan Whaley, Rachel and Andrew Wachter, and Ian Mace; She was also blessed with two great grandchildren, Matthew and Rebecca Whaley; one brother, Wilhelm Buck; three sisters, Emma Roszick, Margarete Kucji and Luise Döbler all of Germany; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her mother, father, four brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

At her request, an autopsy was performed to contribute to medical research. The body of Mrs. Wachter has been cremated per her request.

A memorial for the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, The University of Iowa Foundation, One West Park Road, Iowa City, IA 52244-4550 has been established.

Elsie Bernice Wagler

November 24, 1916 - April 8, 2006

Elsie Bernice Wagler, 89 of Burlington died at 8:09 a.m. April 8, 2006, at Great River Medical Center.
Born November 24, 1916 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Fielding Benji and Pearl Adams Graham. In 1936 she married Donald Turley. He died October 2, 1954. In 1965 she married Robert Wagler. He died July 15, 1995.

Mrs. Wagler worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Orr. She also had worked at Sylvania and Burlington School District and after her retirement she volunteered at Great River Medical Center-Klein Center.

Mrs. Wagler joined First United Methodist Church on April 10, 1938. She enjoyed crocheting. Family was very important to her.

Survivors include one son, Larry (Linda) Turley of Burlington; two daughters, Becky (Ken) Witte of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Donna Prox of West Burlington; nine grandchildren, Mark (Julie) Prox, Cindy Prox, Kelly Mathis, Cristi (Richard) Brignoni, Mike (Amy) Witte, Don (Tracy) Turley, Brad (Pam) Turley, Diane Turley Schumm, and Teresa Turley Stutsman; 21 great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; 2 great-great-great grandchildren; and one brother, Robert (Angie) Graham of Burlington.

Her husbands, Donald Turley and Robert Wagler; parents; granddaughter, Debbie Prox; and son-in-law, Delbert Prox; four brothers, Ollie Durr, Clyde Graham, James Graham and Clarence Graham; and three sisters, Leola Kimmett, Goldie Lippert, and Pearl Graham preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established for First United Methodist Church.
