Betty Crawford

Funeral services for Betty Crawford, age 83, of Clarinda, Iowa, who died Saturday, December 8, 2007, at the Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa, were held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 11, 2007, at the First Christian Church, Clarinda, Iowa with Reverend John Clark officiating. Visitation with the family was held 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the church with an Eastern Star service at 5:00 p.m. prior to the visitation. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery . Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church or to the Nodaway Valley Historical Society. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com. Ritchie Funeral Service, Clarinda, Iowa was in charge of the services.
Betty Blyth Shields was born August 27, 1924 near Siam, Iowa, the daughter of Frank Walter Shields and Fannie Reid Shields. Betty passed away at the Clarinda Regional Health Center on Saturday, December 8, 2007.

Betty grew up in the Siam area and graduated from New Market High School in 1941. She attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri and received her Normal Training Certificate. She taught rural school both at the Hardee School and the Nixon School (Buchanan Township) in Page County. On June 6, 1942 in Albany, Missouri she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Clark Crawford. Betty lived with her parents until Clark returned home from the Service. Betty and Clark lived their entire married life in or around Clarinda, but never forgot their Taylor County roots.

In her life, Betty most enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She reveled in cooking, baking and opened her kitchen and home to all who entered. Betty would often smile and tell wives that the best way to a man's heart was through his stomach! Clark and Betty's home was always filled with company and the family often joked that they ran a hotel and restaurant. Betty loved her home and was very proud of her role as a wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She also loved her church, the church family and gave much of her time and energy to its activities. Betty was also very proud of her community and made sure that she always supported the local merchants. Betty was an active volunteer at the Nodaway Valley Museum and was so proud of its purpose. She loved playing all games and was
quite a whiz at Scrabble, cards and crossword puzzles.

Betty was a member of the First Christian Church in Clarinda, the Siam Eastern Star, the Nodaway Valley Historical Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, the American Legion Auxiliary, Semper Fidelis Sorority, the Clarinda Hospital Auxiliary, the Humane Society and many other local civil organizations.

Betty and Clark were blessed with three children, John (1945), Gloria (1947) and George (1954). There are eleven grandchildren: Clark M. Crawford, Carrie Crawford James and husband Kevin, Corey Crawford and wife Alice, Callie Crawford Porter and husband Mick, Aaron Kline and wife Beth, Adam Kline and wife Jen, Holly Kline Gillespie and husband Doug, Mark Kline and wife Autumn, Eric Kline and wife Kelly, Holly Crawford and Hunter Crawford. There are also 13 great grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her children, John Crawford of Clarinda, Iowa, Gloria Kline and husband Richard of Villisca, Iowa, George Crawford and wife Katie of Clarinda, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sister, Wilma (Billie) Rollstin and husband Robert; sister-in-law, Waive Shields; brother-in-law, Ralph Crawford and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents and grandparents; husband, Clark Crawford; granddaughter, Heather Kline, sister, Ruth Shreck; brother, Reid Shields; brothers-in-law, C.J. Shreck, Dale Crawford and Wade Crawford; sisters-in-law, Mabel Crawford and Lucille Crawford.

Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church in Clarinda and the Nodaway Valley Historical Society in Clarinda.

Betty's kindness, love and generosity will be missed by all.

Gordon "Butch" Jones

Gordon “Butch” Jones was born December 9, 1946 at South Bend, IN to John “Jack” Jones and Louise Knoll Jones. He passed away Thursday, November 29, 2007 at Creighton Medical Center, Omaha, NE.

Gordon graduated from Le Grand High School in Le Grand, IA in 1965. He then served in the U.S. Navy during the Viet Nam war on the U.S.S. Grapple as a radioman. Following his military service he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Sciences from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls. He taught at Mallard, IA for one year and then continued his teaching until his retirement in 1999 at the Villisca Community School District teaching junior and senior high history and social studies classes. Gordon coached all sports – basketball, football, golf and baseball.
On November 12, 1983 he and Gloria Bumsted were married at the Villisca United Methodist Church. He loved to hunt, fish, camp and ride his motorcycle from coast to coast and border to border as well as travel with his family.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Jeff Jones and mother, Louise Knoll Jones.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Gloria, of Villisca, IA; daughter, Laurie Jones and significant other Patrick Hillman and his son Lucas of Sedalia, MO; sons Justin Bumsted of Elliott, IA and Shane Bumsted and wife Molly of La Pine, OR; grandchildren Cole Bumsted of Elliott, IA and Barrett Bumsted of La Pine, OR; brother John Jones and significant other Dee Koch of Gilman, IA; sisters, Cheryl Gunderson and husband Rex of Melbourne, IA, Jerri Ann Frye of Marshalltown, IA, and Kim McCrary and husband Kendall of Le Grand, IA; father, Jack Jones and wife Julie of State Center, IA; nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec 4 at the Villisca United Methodist Church with interment at 3 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery , Marshalltown, IA. Memorials are suggested to Gordon Jones Scholarship Fund or United Parkinson Foundation. Wolfe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Fisher

Charles, a resident of Bellevue, Iowa and formerly of Bettendorf, Iowa was born in Omaha,Nebraska, the son of Frederick Francis & Icle Liken Fisher. He received his bachelor's degree in accounting from Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota.

Charles was a retired accountant. Prior to his business career he was a linguist who mastered languages in the Air Force Military Language School at Monterey & the University of Syracuse, New York. He served the armed forces in this capacity for eight years, spending five years in other parts of the world.

Over the years, Chuck was active in community clubs and the America Legion. He was a life-long Presbyterian and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Davenport, Iowa.

His passion for Dixie land music was appreciated by his immediate family as he relaxed with his private home concerts.

On Friday morning at the age of 65 years, 3 months & 7 days, Charles died at Trinity Medical Center, North Campus of the VA hospital in Davenport following an extended illness.

Those left to honor his memory include his daughters & son-in-law, Stacey & Dennis Meyer of Bellevue and Kathryn Fisher of Northfield, Minnesota, his granddaughter, Elizabeth Meyer, and his sisters: Dorothy Tucker, Omaha, Nebraska & Sharon Loutzenhiser, Villisca, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ellen Louise Holmes

Ellen Louise Holmes, the daughter of Edward and Ada (Fike) England was born March 25, 1932 in Red Oak, Iowa. She died on Thursday, December 6, 2007 at Clarkson Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 75 years, 8 months and 11 days.

Throughout Ellen's childhood she lived in Red Oak and several other communities in Iowa. Following high school, she worked different jobs in southwest Iowa and later Omaha, Nebraska. Ellen was united in marriage to Gary Holmes on September 4, 1976 in Las Vegas, Nevada. After their wedding and during Gary's military career, they made their home wherever he was stationed. In 1995, they returned to Villisca. Ellen enjoyed cooking, making crafts and quilting. She loved painting porcelain and ceramic dolls, which she would then sell. Ellen and Gary have been busy raising their great-granddaughter, Starla Bohrer.

Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; 2 children: Bobby and Catherine; 2 grandchildren; 2 sisters: Jodie and Edna; 4 half sisters: Elizabeth, Mae, Della and Christina; 4 half brothers: Herman, Joe, Lawrence and Roy.

Ellen is survived by her husband: Gary Holmes of Villisca, IA; sons: James Black of IA; Terry Larsen of Omaha, NE; William McCoy and wife Brenda of MO; Ralph McCoy of Corning, IA; daughters: Vickie Blair and husband Arnold of Omaha, NE; Debra Saxton and husband Tom of Wichita, KS; Angela Humphrey of WA; Sandy Henke of Wichita, KS; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother: Edward England of Bolivar, MO; sister: Nadine Hardeman of Hooper, NE; other relatives and a host of friends.

May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn.

Cremation has taken place and a Memorial service will be held Monday, December 10, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. At Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home, Red Oak.,Rev. Kevin Skipworth, Officiating

Betty Lois Wigg Guffey

In loving memory of Betty Lois Wigg Guffey, who was 83, lived in Springfield, and passed on Thursday, November 22, 2007 at Memorial Medical Center with her family at her side.

Mrs. Guffey was born November 2, 1924 in Villisca, Iowa, the daughter of Jacob M. and Ruth Marie Larson Wigg. They preceded her in death.

Survived by: One Daughter - Janell (Richard) Rankin of Rocheport, MO
One Son - Rodney (Lois) Guffey of Williamsville, IL
Three grandchildren - Randy (Teri) Tomaw of Dawson, Leah Guffey of Williamsville and Jacob (Barb) Guffey of Williamsville
Seven Great-grandchildren -
Cody & Abby Tomaw of Edinburg, Kayla & Kelsey Hurley of Williamsville and Jacob, Drexel, & Cherish Guffey all of Williamsville.

Sister-in-laws - Elizabeth & Mary Guffey, and Martha Heckert all of Red Oak, IA
Several Nieces & Nephews

She married James B. (Jack) Guffey on December 21, 1943 in San Leandro, CA. Mr. Guffey preceded her in death on April 10, 2000. She is also preceded in death by a brother Roy Wigg.
She went to California to work for Caterpillar as a part of the war effort then followed her husband to Biloxi, MS and worked at a guest house at Kessler Field taking care of GI families. They later moved to Denver, CO, then back to Iowa, and finally settling in Williamsville where she was a farm wife & child care provider. She and Jack farmed in the Williamsville area for 46 years before retiring in 1984 then later moving to Springfield.

She enjoyed many trips across country visiting friends and family. Mrs. Guffey devoted most of her life to caring for children, researching her family's genealogy, and taking care of her family.

Mrs. Guffey received her teaching certificate in 1941 and taught in a one-room school house in Iowa. She also substituted at Sherman Elementary as well as Kiddie Kollege, Sparc, Oaktree Learning Academy, as well as at home with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was an assistant 4-H leader of North Sangamon 4-H club, was active with Boy Scouts & Girls Scouts, as well as the Williamsville United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women & church choir.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the Williamsville United Methodist Church with Memorial Services following at 7:00 P.M. with Rev. Dick Piscatelli officiating. Mott & Henning Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Cremation rites were accorded with burial at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Nyman, Iowa on December 1, 2007 at 1:00 P.M.

Ben Junior Richardson

Ben Junior Richardson, 82 of Villisca, Iowa passed away Monday, November 19, 2007 at the Veteran's Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. He was born December 19, 1924 at Corning, Iowa to Ben and Mattie Bennett Richardson.

Ben attended Grant county schools. In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving his country in Australia and the Philippines.

On September 13, 1945 Ben married Irene Wright in Omaha, Nebraska. This union was blessed with five children: Caroline, Connie, James, Cleva, and Jerri.

Ben farmed in his early years. He also worked for many years as a foreman at rock quarries in Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and North Dakota. Ben was VFW Post # 8998 Commander during the 80's.

Ben is survived by his children Caroline King and husband Bob of Rockford, IA; Connie Lennie of Harvey, IA; Cleva Donohue of Hiawatha, KS; Jerri Orr of Villisca, IA; and companion Betty Reed of Villisca as well as grandchildren Sarah, Kelly, Steven, Bill, David, Laura, Brian, Jason, Brad, Chris, and April. He was preceded in death by his wife Irene in 1998, his parents, son James Richardson and his son-in-law Harvey Lennie.

Memorial services for Ben J. Richardson, 82, of Villisca were held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21, 2007 at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca, Iowa. Pastor Gordon Scott officiated. Memorials may be directed to the Villisca United Methodist Church.

Gerald Skahill

Gerald Skahill, age 83, of Villisca, Iowa passed away Thursday, November 8, 2007 at the Villisca Good Samaritan Center after an extended illness. Gerald Skahill was born July 13, 1924 in Imogene, Iowa the son of Thomas and Carmelita (Hughes) Skahill. He was raised near Imogene and started farming with his Dad at a young age. Gerald was united in marriage to Joyce Bateman on March 4, 1946 at St. Patrick's Church in Imogene. They moved to a farm near Villisca, Iowa in 1948 where they lived all of their married life before moving into Villisca in 1996. Gerald had a strong faith in God and was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church where he served on the Parish Council and also as a trustee. Over the years he was a member of the Farm Bureau and the Iowa Cattleman's Association. Gerald loved watching baseball and going to the College World Series. He was an Iowa State Cyclone fan as well as an Atlanta Braves fan. He was particularly proud of his Irish heritage and was able to travel to Ireland in 1995. Gerald was most proud of his family. He was a GREAT husband, dad, and grandpa. He will be missed by all.

Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers: Kenneth and Patrick Skahill. Survivors include his wife of 61 years: Joyce Skahill of Villisca, Iowa; children: Jerry Skahill and wife Mary of Ames, Iowa; Judy Casey and husband Duane of Villisca, Iowa; Nancy Chapman and husband Don of Lenox, Iowa; Janet Scholey and husband Fred of Villisca, Iowa; Mike Skahill of Lenox, Iowa; Susan Lindberg and husband David of Clive, Iowa; Mark Skahill and wife Alyson of West Des Moines, Iowa; David Skahill and wife Elizabeth of Villisca, Iowa; and Donna Robinson and husband Jim of Villisca, Iowa; 24 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; brothers: James Skahill and wife Marie of Glendora, California; Jack Skahill and wife Arlene of Covina, California; Thomas Skahill of Springfield, Missouri; and Francis Skahill of Pomona, California; sister: Bonnie Sturm of Shenandoah, Iowa; sister-in-law: Irene Lantz of Urbandale, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 AM Monday, November 12, 2007 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Red Oak, Iowa. Burial will be in the Arlington Cemetery near Villisca, Iowa. There will be a prayer service and recitation of rosary at 5:30 PM, Sunday, November 11, 2007 at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Sunday, November 11, 2007 at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Villisca or the Alegent Hospice of Corning, Iowa.

Timothy Lloyd Lininger

Timothy Lloyd Lininger was born May 11, 1967 in Clarinda, Iowa, the son of Gary and Margaret (Golding) Lininger. He passed away on Saturday morning, November 3, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. He attended school in New Market, Iowa and graduated from New Market High School. Timothy worked for NSK Corporation in Clarinda. He was united in marriage to Michelle Hoyt on June 11, 1994 in Villisca, Iowa. They moved to Sioux City, Iowa shortly after and Tim worked for Gateway in North Sioux City, South Dakota. In 1996, they moved to an acreage in rural Elk Point, South Dakota. After working for another year at Gateway, Timothy decided to stay home and raise their children, Kane and Nash. During that time, he also operated a hobby business Lininger SD, a Gun Restoration and Custom Leather Business.

Timothy's passion in life was collecting, repairing, studying, researching, and teaching about guns and making custom leather products. The more challenging the project presented to him, the more he enjoyed it. He loved being outdoors and shooting guns on his range. Timothy was a lifetime member of the N.R.A. He attended Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. Timothy enjoyed taking pictures of his friends and family. The times spent with his family are what he loved the most. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivor include his wife, Michelle of rural Elk Point; two sons: Kane and Nash Lininger at home; a daughter: Amber Kirsch of Burlington Junction, MO; 2 grandchildren: Isaiah Ray and Levi Ray; his parents: Gary and Margaret Lininger of New Market, IA; his paternal grandmother: Nellie Lininger of Clarinda, IA; 3 sisters: LaDinah Lininger, Anita Whited, and GayRea Williams, all of Clarinda, IA; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents: Nina and Paul Golding; his paternal grandfather: Lloyd Lininger; and a sister in infancy.

Memorial Services for Timothy Lininger, age 40 of Elk Point, South Dakota and formerly of New Market Iowa were held at 6:00 p.m. Friday, November 9, 2007 at the United Methodist Church in New Market, Iowa. Inurnment was in Memory Cemetery near New Market, Iowa at 4:00 p.m. Friday afternoon. There was visitation with the family present after the burial until service time Friday evening at the church. The Selby-Kirsch Funeral Chapel of Shenandoah is in charge of arrangements.

Alma Faye Eldridge Bewley

Alma Faye Eldridge Bewley, 70, entered into the presence of Jesus her Savior on Friday, October 26, 2007. She remained in the home of her daughter and had a long fight after being diagnosed of Muscular Dystrophy.

Alma was born May 25, 1937 in Melrose, New Mexico, the daughter of James Aubrey Eldridge and Elsie Mae Stone Eldridge. She united in marriage with James Jefferson Bewley June 12, 1955. To this union they were blessed with three children.

Alma was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Jim Bewley; sister Linda Robertson and husband Lynn, daughter Susan Petersen and husband Wade, son Russell and wife Ardyce and daught Mae Orr and husband Vince.
