Elizabeth "Liz" Winston
OTTUMWA - Elizabeth "Liz" Helenna Winston, 56, of 421 N. Clay St. died at 12:15 p.m. Sept. 7, 2002, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
She was born July 11, 1946, in New York City, N.Y., to Julius and Helen Csaszar Horwath. She married Cleo "Joe" Winston Jr. June 19, 1970.
She had been a bookkeeper for Nagel Meat Factory in Queens, N.Y., and was an employee of New York City Credit Bureau before moving to Ottumwa in 1974. She had been an employee of KLEE-KOTM and had served as office manager for Dollar General in Ottumwa. She was a member of St. Mary of the Visitation; Ottumwa City Advisory Council; served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader; YWCA Preschool Board member; James School PTA officer; Midwest Little League officer; Babe Ruth League Fund Raiser; YMCA Tee Ball instructor; YWCA Softball Pee Wee, Junior, Senior coach and board member. She also served on Ottumwa High School Advisory Committee and was a member of Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, where she served as scholarship chairman.
Surviving are her husband; one daughter, Lisa-Marie Rohlf of West Des Moines; two sons, Joseph-Darren Winston of Tiffin and Chad-Everett Winston at home; one granddaughter; two brothers, Julius Horwath of Bayside, N.Y., and Frank Horwath of Glendale, N.Y.; three sisters, June Joyce of Saddlebrook, N. J., Francine Horwath of Woodside, N.Y., and Suzanne Marquez of Reseda, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of the Visitation with the Rev. Robert Striegel officiating. Burial will be at Ottumwa Cemetery . Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with the Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. and family present from 5 to 8:30 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Chad Winston, Matt Bednar, Brandon Gravett, Wes Keith, John Mottet, Shane Nestor, Bill "Hawkeye" Reece and Josh Wilson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Benedict, Arnold Berry, Wayne Billings, Cornell Bland, Denny Bryant, Richard Conley, Frank and Julius Horwath, Bernie Johnson, Richard Joyce, Ruddy Marquez, Steve and Tom Palen, Bill Rohlf, Patrick Ruddy, Larry Taylor, Brett Voss, and Ron Voss and Alan White.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for her son, Chad's education.
Ulyssis Anderson
ELDON -- Ulyssis Fred Anderson, 80, of Kansas City, Mo., died Aug. 19, 2002, at Liberty Hospital.
He was born Sept. 7, 1921, at Madison, Mo., to McCoy Leftger and Macie Ann Buffington Anderson.
He had worked for Ford Motor Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1983. He was a World War II veteran serving with the 556th Ordnance Tank Maintenance Co. in action in Normandy, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received a purple heart, Good Conduct Medal and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal. He was a mason and a member of UAW 249.
Surviving are a half brother, William Henry Anderson of Eldon and a half sister, Mary Ann Anderson Canny of Eldon.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Church Archer Pasley Chapel Funeral Home, Liberty, Mo. Burial will be at New Hope Cemetery , Liberty, Mo.
Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Marjorie Giltner
BATAVIA -- Marjorie Elene Giltner, 85, of 7495 30th Ave., Batavia, died at 12:55 a.m. Aug. 20, 2002, at Jefferson County Hospital, Fairfield.
She was born Sept. 16, 1916, in Ottumwa to Hervey Roy and Effie Long Smith. She married Max Giltner in 1948. He preceded her in death in 1986.
She was a member of Bladensburg Christian Church, Batavia TTT, Senior Citizens of Batavia, AARP and Life Goes On in Ottumwa.
Surviving are two sons, Bert of Ottumwa and Bard of Batavia; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Marilyn Morrison; two sisters, Mae Evans and Clara Carruthers; and a brother, Charles Smith.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with the Rev. David Albert officiating. Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery.
Visitation will begin after 1 p.m. today in the funeral home with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Clark Yeager, Glenn Hupp, Glen Kesselring, Dave Fenton, Ivan Peters and Kenny Black.
A memorial has been established to the Bladensburg Christian Church.
David Shipler
BATAVIA -- David R. Shipler, 68, of 1361 Highway 34, Batavia, died at 8:05 p.m. Aug. 18, 2002, at his home.
He was born Nov. 21, 1933, in Batavia to Melvin and Vera Morley Shipler. He married Roberta M. Robertson Dec. 24, 1958.
A resident of the Batavia area all of his life, he was a graduate of Batavia High School in 1951. He had served in the U.S. Army and farmed most of his life. For the last 15 years, he worked at Nelson Co. in Fairfield.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Cathy Irwin of Ottumwa, Toni McClure of Eldon and Darcy Heaton of Gresham, Ore.; a son, Todd Shipler of Batavia; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Harold "Cye" Shipler of Batavia.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John Shipler.
His body has been cremated.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Batavia Cemetery
with the Rev. David Albert officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Living Hope Bible Church in Eldon.
Reece Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Merrill Eakins
OTTUMWA - Merrill L. Eakins, 68, of 244 N. Davis St. died at 11:25 a.m. July 9, 2001, in his home.
He was born Feb. 10, 1933, in Ottumwa to Lloyd and Nancy Butler Eakins.
Surviving are two daughters, Debbie Troxel of Ottumwa and Vicky Johnson of Sac City; a son, Nick of Perry; three sisters, Shirley McCarty and Betty Yates of Globe, Ariz., and Doris Lathrop of Ottumwa; a brother, David of Ottumwa; a companion, Mary Lewis; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. today, Thursday, July 12, in Reece Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery . Military services will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post 3 American Legion. Pallbearers will be Gene, Randy and Jerry McCarty and Phillip, Johnny and Timothy Cox.
Memorials may be made to Hospice, Inc., 312 E. Alta Vista Ave., Ottumwa, Iowa, 52501.
Judy Ryken
FREMONT - Judy J. Ryken, 52, of Fremont died June 26, 2002, at Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa.
She was born in Iowa City July 20, 1949, to James E. and Lucille Reynolds Thompson of Keota. She married Jerry Ryken in Oskaloosa Feb. 18, 1967.
Surviving are her husband of Fremont; a son, Jerry "J.J." of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Renee Robison of Sigourney; three grandchildren; a brother, Toby Thompson of Des Moines; and four sisters, Velda "Sis" Visser, Shirley Petersma, and Karen McAdoo, all of Oskaloosa, and Beverly Deaver of Rochester, Minn.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery
at Oskaloosa.
The family will be at the funeral chapel from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today, Friday, to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to either Mahaska Hospice or to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
Frances Parks
OTTUMWA - Frances Elizabeth Parks, 93, of Kaysville, Utah, formerly of Ottumwa, died at 1:05 a.m. June 24, 2002, at Rocky Mountain Care Center, Clearfield, Utah.
She was born July 14, 1908, in Jefferson County, near Eldon, to Andrew Isaac and Rosia May Pearson Snook. She married Harry Jefferson Parks Nov. 19, 1924, in Ottumwa. He died Dec. 12, 1961.
Surviving are a foster son, Carl Bailey of Ottumwa; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at Reece Funeral Home, the Rev. Byron Newland officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, with family present one hour prior to the service.
Active pallbearers will be Bert Wallis, Troy Pruitt, Wade Williams, Ron Snook and Richard Knight.
Honorary pallbearer will be Larry Knight.
Mary Kapp
OTTUMWA - Mary E. Kapp, 82, formerly of Iowa City and Ottumwa, died June 26, 2002, at Solon Nursing Care Center, Solon.
She was born May 14, 1920, in Weller to Frank and Jane O'Brien Carr. She married C. Leo Kapp in 1942. He died in 1971.
Surviving are four sons, Bill of Solon, Charley of Iowa City, John of Riverview, Mich., and Steve of Lawrence, Kan.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Sheedy and Marge Bates, both of Ottumwa; and a brother, Frank Carr of Ottumwa.
The body has been cremated. Memorial Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, in St. Mary of the Visitation in Ottumwa, the Rev. Tim Sheedy officiating. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
The family will be at Reece Funeral Home from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Friday.
Memorials may be made to Liberty County Living or the Solon Nursing Care Center.
