Kenneth R. Williams
Feb. 9, 1914 - April 15, 2001
Kenneth R. Williams, 87, of Keokuk, died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Keokuk Area Hospital.
He was born on Feb. 9, 1914, in Sutter, Ill., the son of John Preston and Iona Fryer Williams. He married Margaret Ellenberg on Nov. 19, 1938, in Kahoka, Mo. She preceded him in death on April 19, 1998.
Survivors include: a daughter, Linda Sisk and her husband, Gene, of Keokuk; a son, Kenneth Williams Jr. of Ellisville, Mo.; two granddaughters, Lori Miller and her husband, Frank, of Pulaski and Gina Sisk of Mount Pleasant; a grandson, Jeffrey Sisk of Creston; four great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Dustin, Dakota and Nathan; and a brother, John Preston Williams of Branson, Mo.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Hamilton and Gwendolyn Neptune.
Mr. Williams started his employment with the Hubinger Company of Keokuk in 1943.
His service was interrupted as he joined the United States Navy in 1943 and served on the USS Jenkins until his discharge in 1945.
He then returned to Hubingers and was promoted to starch supervisor in 1955. He retired in 1976 with 33 years of service. After his retirement he enjoyed time with his family, fishing, camping and most of all gardening.
Mr. Williams was affectionately known as "The Tomato Man".
He was a member of the American Legion Post #41, the Eagles, the Moose and a past member of the Isaac Walton Club.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with the Rev. Bill Hartman officiating.
Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Park in Keokuk.
Visitation is after 1 p.m. Tuesday with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Southeastern Community College Nurses Scholarship Fund.
Violet Elizabeth Nelson
Nov. 14, 1915 - June 14, 2001
Violet Elizabeth Nelson, 85, of Keokuk, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at River Hills Village in Keokuk.
She was born on Nov. 14, 1915, in rural Argyle, the daughter of James and Violet Scovern McCarty. After the death of her parents, she was raised by her aunts, Frances and Mahala Scovern. She married Laurence E. Nelson on May 29, 1940, in rural Argyle. He preceded her in death on Sept. 5, 1997.
Survivors include: a daughter, Kristin Whitaker and her husband, Bruce, of Keokuk; a son, Alan Nelson and his wife, Denise, of Keokuk; a granddaughter, Kelsey Whitaker of Keokuk; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by the aunts who raised her and four brothers, Gerald McCarty, Robert McCarty, Gilbert "Giggs" McCarty and Harold "Tim" McCarty.
She graduated from Argyle High School and attended Iowa Wesleyan College where she earned her teaching degree. She had taught at Columbia, Eagle and Nashville Township schools in Lee County for eight years and then taught at Wells-Carey elementary school in Keokuk for 17 years, retiring in 1982.
Mrs. Nelson was a member of the Retired Teacher's Association and had served on the Jackson Township election board for 10 years.
Mrs. Nelson was also a member of the Melrose United Methodist Church and was active in the Women's Circle of the church.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Monday, June 18, at the Melrose United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Abraham officiating.
Burial will be in the Scandinavian Cemetery , rural Keokuk.
Visitation is after 1 p.m. Sunday, June 17, at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with family meeting friends from 7 to 9 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Melrose United Methodist Church.
John E. Monnier
March 29, 1920 - Aug. 4, 2001
BASCO, Ill. - John E. Monnier, 81, a lifelong resident and farmer from the Basco, Ill., area died at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Montebello HealthCare Center, Hamilton, Ill.
He was born on March 29, 1920, in Warsaw, Ill., the son of Francis and Marie LeMaire Monnier. He married Bonnye Gayle Steimer on Oct. 4, 1944, in Little Rock, Ark. She preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 2000.
Survivors include: three daughters, Mary E. Reed and her husband, Gary P., of Quincy, Ill., Lou Ann Metternich and her husband, David, of Nauvoo, Ill. and Nancy J. Halpin of Easton, Pa.; six sons, Daniel W. and his wife, Kathy, of Arlington, Texas, John Robert and his wife, Pam, of Kingsport, Pa., Stephen F. of Wausau, Wis., David E. of Dallas City, Ill., Paul A. and his wife, Theresa, of Warsaw, Ill., and Mark G. and his wife, Becky, of Niota, Ill.; 21 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was also preceded in death by his parents.
He was a lifelong resident of the Basco community. He was educated in Warsaw schools and graduated with a degree in agriculture from the University of Illinois.
During World War II he was stationed at Fort Knox, Ky., where he met his wife, who was serving in the Army nurses corp. After the war, he taught ag classes in night school to veterans returning home.
He served as Bear Creek Road Commissioner from 1981 to 1989 and for many years was an announcer for the Basco 4th of July celebration.
He always enjoyed and found time for his neighbors and friends and loved to fish.
Mr. Monnier was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Point, Ill.
Funeral prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Lamporte Funeral Home in Carthage, Ill., with funeral mass at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Carthage, with Father J.A. Small officiating.
Burial will be in the Graham Cemetery , near Denver, Ill.
Friends may call the funeral home after 2 p.m. Thursday with family meeting friends from 5 to 8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the St. Mary's Catholic Church, West Point or the charity of the donor's choice.
Carol Elberta Faeth
March 11, 1919 - Oct. 14, 2001
FORT MADISON - Carol Elberta Faeth, 82, of Fort Madison, died at 5:50 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at Keokuk Area Hospital.
She was born on March 11, 1919, in Danville, the daughter of Elbert E. and Zoie Gibson Moore. She married Marvin A. Faeth on June 15, 1941, in Burlington. He survives.
Additional survivors include: two sons, Loren Faeth and his wife, Arleen, of Ames and Lynn Faeth and his wife, Heather, of Fort Madison; a daughter, Mrs. Vince (Marva) McCarty of Urbandale; six grandchildren; a brother, William Moore of Danville; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
She had owned and operated Faeth Orchard along with her husband for the past 60 years.
She was a member of the Iowa Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, Illinois Specialty Growers Association and the Donnellson Saddle Club.
Mrs. Faeth was a member of the Santa Fe United Methodist Church and a member of the Fellowship Circle of the Church.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Thursday at Santa Fe United Methodist Church, Fort Madison, with the Rev. Consorcia Sanchez officiating.
Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery , Fort Madison.
Visitation is after 1 p.m. Wednesday at King-Lynk Funeral Home, Fort Madison, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. A memorial prayer service will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Long Creek United Methodist Church in Danville.
A memorial fund has been established.
Dennis Michael Stehl
May 28, 1948 - Dec. 20, 2001
MONTROSE - Dennis Michael Stehl, 53, of Montrose, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at Keokuk Area Hospital.
He was born on May 28, 1948, in Keokuk, the son of Harold and Louise Hagmeier Stehl.
Survivors include: two sons, Cory Stehl and his wife, Stephanie, of Tulsa, Okla., and Philip Stehl of Keokuk; a gradndaughter; a grandson; his mother, Louise Bergman of Keokuk; and a sister, Marilyn York of Pryor, Okla.
He was preceded in death by his father and his stepfather, Walter Bergman.
He enjoyed riding around in his van.
Mr. Stehl had quite a sense of humor and liked to tease and agitate his family and friends.
Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Saturday at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with the Rev. John Abraham and Paul Mays officiating.
Burial will be in the Sandusky Cemetery , rural Keokuk.
Visitation is after 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
