Doris McMunn
May 10, 1925 - Oct. 21, 2002
RUSHVILLE, Ill. - Doris McMunn, 77, of Rushville, Ill., formerly a longtime resident of Hamilton, Ill., died at 7:35 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at Culbertson Long Term Care in Rushville.
She was born on May 10, 1925, in Rushville, the daughter of David V. and Etta P. Atkinson Vollmer. She married Earl McMunn on Nov. 5, 1945, at the First Christian Church in Denver, Colo. He preceded her in death on June 14, 1999.
Survivors include: a son, Richard E. (and Diane) McMunn of Hamden, Conn.; three sisters, Margie Luthy of Rushville, Louisa Cripe of Astoria, Ill., and Nancy Longwell of Mountain Grove, Mo.; and two grandchildren, Shannon McMunn of Farmington, Conn., and Meaghan McMunn of Hamden.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Erin McMunn; and a sister, Iola Icenogle.
She graduated from Rushville High School.
She worked for more than 30 years as an administrative assistant at Cosgrove Insurance Agency, Serfass Insurance Agency and Lofton Insurance Agency.
Mrs. McMunn was a member of the Montebello Floral Society.
She also served on the Hamilton Library Board and the Election Board.
Mrs. McMunn was a member of the First Christian Church in Hamilton. She served as a Sunday school teacher for many years and was a member of King's Daughters.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lamporte Funeral Home of Hamilton, with the Rev. Dr. E. Ambrose Stump officiating and Father Robert Reynolds assisting.
Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery , Hamilton.
Visitation is after 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. and from 9 a.m. until the time of services on Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials in her memory may be made to the Cass-Schuyler Area Hospice, 331 S. Main Street, Virginia, IL. 62691.
Joseph A. 'Joe' Braeden
July 10, 1930 - Dec. 20, 2002
WARSAW, Ill. - Joseph A. "Joe" Braeden, 72, a lifelong resident of Warsaw, Ill., died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Keokuk Area Hospital.
He was born on July 10, 1930, in Warsaw, Ill., the son of Albert and Cecilia Hebert Braeden. He married Sue Epperson Satterly on July 5, 1975, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Warsaw. She survives.
Additional survivors include: a son, Dennis of Warsaw; two daughters, Gayle Roskamp and her husband, Mike, of Warsaw and Rhonda Kay and her husband, Bud, of Kamiah, Idaho; two stepdaughters, Petty Officer First Class Robin Satterly of San Diego, Calif., and Pam Ragar and her husband, Mark, of Keokuk; grandchildren, Amy and Ricky Kay of Idaho and Tyler and Dustin Roskamp of Warsaw; step grandchildren, Ashley, Melinda and Jacob Ragar of Keokuk and Nathan Land of Texas; a great-grandson, Logan; a brother, Cecil Braeden and his wife, Maureen of Anacortes, Wash.; and a sister, Celine Knoche and her husband, Paul, of Warsaw.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Braeden.
He grew up on the family farm near Warsaw along with his two brothers and their sister.
After graduation from Warsaw High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He also attended Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill.
Mr. Braeden worked as a car salesman in Carthage and Nauvoo, Ill. He then owned and operated several businesses in Warsaw, all associated with service, repair and sales of automobiles.
Many local residents will remember him from having done business with him and many more will remember him as their school bus driver. He drove the school bus for 37 years.
Mr. Braeden loved softball and played on local teams for several seasons.
His grandchildren called him Papa Joe.
He lived to fish and especially enjoyed the many fishing trips he took to Canada and Washington State with his brothers and friends.
As a young man he had an interest in collecting geodes.
Mr. Braeden bowled in Keokuk on various leagues. He was an avid mushroom hunter and loved watching the St. Louis Cardinals on TV. He was also very proud of his homemade wine.
He had many friends over the years and treasured every one of them.
Mr. Braeden had great pride in the community and served as chairman for many fund-raisers, generously donating his time and finances to many community activities. He was also very active in the Hancock County Democratic Party.
Mr. Braeden was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and was past president of the Warsaw Chamber of Commerce.
Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Warsaw, with Father Michael Menner officiating.
Burial with full military honors will be in Oakland Cemetery , Warsaw.
Visitation is after 3 p.m. Thursday at Lamporte Funeral Home in Warsaw, with family meeting friends from 6 to 9 p.m. The rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Warsaw Ambulance.
John H. Boyd
Dec. 23, 1917 - Feb. 28, 2003
John H. Boyd, 85, of Keokuk, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at River Hills Village in Keokuk.
He was born Dec. 23, 1917, in Sandusky, the son of Robert and Nellie Coulter Boyd. He married Marjorie McKay on Nov. 19, 1938, in Sandusky. She preceded him in death on July 5, 1995.
Survivors include: a son, Robert Boyd of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Gretchen Petry and her husband Charles of St. Peter, Minn., Judy Schlotter and her husband Tom Reis of Gilbert; two daughters-in-law, Nancy Boyd and Vicki Boyd; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Geraldine Boyd of Keokuk; a cousin, Olive Megchelsen; two nieces, Jan Lancaster of Atlanta, Ga., and Linda Griffey of Palm Springs, Calif.
He also was preceded in death by a son, John Roger Boyd and a brother Marshall Boyd.
He graduated from Keokuk High School with the class of 1935.
Mr. Boyd was a veteran of the United States Navy and served on the USS Jerauld during World War II.
He had been employed by Union Electric Power Plant in Keokuk for 27 years, retiring in 1981.
He was a member of the Elks Club in Keokuk and VFW Post #3508.
Mr. Boyd loved to play golf, go fishing and watch the ducks and other wildlife. He enjoyed woodworking and photography. He was a loving father and grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his family.
Graveside services will be held at a later date.
There is no visitation.
Memorials may be made to the Iowa Nature Conservancy or Lee County Hospice.
Vigen Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.
Forrest L. 'Newt' Springer
Aug. 12, 1921 - April 26, 2003
KAHOKA, Mo. - Forrest L. "Newt" Springer, 81, of Kahoka, Mo., died Saturday, April 26, 2003, in the Fort Madison Community Hospital in Fort Madison.
He was born Aug. 12, 1921 in Lee County, the son of Cort and Violet Kinkeade Springer. He married Neva Jeffers on Aug. 16, 1943, in Kahoka. She survives.
Additional survivors include: four sons, Brian Springer and his wife, Pat, of Kahoka, Dan Springer and his wife, Jo, of Fayetteville, Ga., Steve Springer and his wife, Brenda, of Coulterville, Calif., and Cort Springer and his wife, Bev, of West Point; two daughters, Kathy Long and her husband, Terry, of St. Francisville, Mo., and Kim Marshall of Waterford, Calif.; a sister, Marjorie Leazer Emmitt of Montrose; three sisters-in-law, Gertrude McCarty of Fort Madison, Mary Case of Los Angeles, Calif., and Joan Evans of Letts; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Donnie Marshall.
He graduated from Argyle High School. He was a retired 33-year employee of General Mills of Keokuk.
He enjoyed his family, hunting, fishing, and volunteering at the Clark County Nutrition Center and the Clark County Food Pantry.
Mr. Springer was a member of the St. Francisville United Methodist Church and had been active in the Wayland United Methodist Church in most recent years.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with Rev. Rebecca Peak officiating.
Burial will be in Sand Cemetery
at St. Francisville.
Friends may call after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the St. Francisville or Wayland United Methodist churches or to the Clark County Nutrition Center.
Donald Arthur Byrne
Jan. 3, 1950 - July 3, 2000
WEVER - Donald Arthur Byrne, 50, of Wever, Iowa, died at 9 p.m. Monday, July 3, 2000.
He was born on Jan. 3, 1950, in Keokuk, the son of Arthur E. and Eva B. Elmore Byrne.
Survivors include: two brothers, Michael (Pam) Byrne and Patrick Byrne, both of Keokuk; his stepmother, Darlene Byrne of Keokuk; and a niece and a nephew.
Mr. Byrne was a production worker for 14 years with IAAP.
He has been cremated.
Graveside services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 12, at Keokuk National Cemetery , with the Rev. Shirley Bliven officiating.
There will be no formal visitation.
