Bertha L. Savage, 94, of Newton died Thursday, Jan. 29, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Glen Oswalt officiating. A private family burial will be held at the Maple Hill Cemetery
in Montour.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted to Grinnell Regional Medical Center Hospice and may be left at the funeral home.
The daughter of John and Nellie (Woodman) Holmes, she was born Oct. 20, 1909, in Montour. She was a high school graduate and a rural daily newspaper carrier for several years. She also was a dishwasher and tray preparer at the Shaw's Nursing Home for 16 years. She retired in 1971 and was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She lived in Montour, Greenfield, Mt. View, Mo., Toledo and became a resident of Newton in 1942.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Leonard D. and Ella Savage of Newton, Donald L. Savage of Des Moines and Robert D. Savage of Austin, Texas; two daughters and sons-in-law, Evelyn R. Kennedy of Newton and Wilda Jennie and James Ackerman of Olivet, Mich.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Nellie Flynn of Toledo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Lois M. Woody, two infant grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters.
Teunis De Ruiter
GRINNELL — Teunis DeRuiter, 89, of Grinnell and formerly of Jasper County, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003 at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Lynnville Friends Church with Pastors Peter Schuler and Jeff Lee officiating. Burial will be at Sully Cemetery . Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell is handling arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Teunis DeRuiter Memorial Fund.
The son of Arie and Hermina Zuidema DeRuiter, he was born Feb. 21, 1914, in Jasper County. He was educated at Black Oak Country School near his home in Jasper County. On June 15, 1937, he married Jeanette Van Genderen in Sully. The couple farmed near Newton and later Searsboro, prior to purchasing his parent's farm north of Lynnville in 1948. He retired from farming in 1994 and the couple moved to Seeland Park in Grinnell in 2000.
Mr. DeRuiter attended Sully Community Church and later Lynnville Friends Church. He was a member of the Lynnville Telephone Board, Lynnville Saddle Club, Fox Hunter's Club, Richland Township Election Board and Bethel Cemetery
Board.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette of Grinnell; three children, Arnold DeRuiter of Lime Springs, Bonita Wertz of Johnston and Daryl DeRuiter of Calistoga, Calif.; one sister, Irene Moes of Sully; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Wilma Van Steenwyk and Elsie Baarda.
Dale R. Verwers
Dale R. Verwers, 65, of Newton died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Memorial services will be Friday at 7 p.m. at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith of Skiff Medical Center officiating. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
The family will greet friends immediately following the memorial service with a coffee time at the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted to the Kellogg Historical Society and may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Raymond and Helen M. (Cook) Verwers, he was born April 29, 1938, in Kellogg. He served in the United States Navy and was an independent truck driver. He enjoyed reading, cleaning and detailing cars. He lived in Kellogg and Newton and also lived in California for 10 years.
Survivors include two brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Roberta Verwers of Gladbrook and Jim and Trudy Verwers of Newton; a sister and brother-in-law, Rosemary and Don McKeever of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a niece.
Walter Ray Wing
MITCHELLVILLE — Walter Ray Wing, 84, of Mitchellville died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Colfax. Burial will be at McKeever Cemetery . Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax is handling arrangements.
Friends may call today after 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted to the First Baptist Church.
The son of Walter and Anna (Ferguson) Wing, he was born Oct. 5, 1919, in LaPlatte, Mo. On Sept. 27, 1941, he married Gladys Taylor in Missouri. He was a farmer, a member and a past deacon and trustee of First Baptist Church of Colfax. He also was a former member of Colfax Kiwanis Club and former board member of Mitchellville Co-op Elevator Co. He was a resident of Colfax for many years and a resident of Mitchellville the past three years.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Janice Wing of Colfax and Donald and Shelly Wing of Apple Valley, Calif.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sheryl and Bruce McWilliams of Altoona and Janet and Jim Gould of Apple Valley, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Loren and Mildred Wing of Colfax, Gale and Leona Wing of Prairie City and Jack and Marge Wing of Winter Park, Fla.; and one sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Stanton Metcalf of Knoxville.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Larry Lewis Stewart, 63, of Newton died of COPD Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Jim Olsen of Zoar Church in rural Newton officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery
in the Veteran's Section.
Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Jasper County.
The son of Lewis Stewart and Coral Mae Hilton, he was born Sept. 22, 1940, in Oskaloosa. He attended Oskaloosa High School. He was a construction laborer and past member of the Newton American Legion Post 111. He was a resident of Newton since 1947.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Shawn Douglas and Stephanie Stewart of Georgetown, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Billie Jo and Samuel Holland of Georgetown, Texas; three grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Hedlund, Helen Jones and Wanda Lester, all of Newton; and a brother, Bill Stewart of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald and William Eugene; and three sister, Leota McCoy, Lillian Slycord and Juanita Patten.

KELLOGG — Pamela Schuler, 38, of Kellogg died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003 at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Larry Pauley of Kellogg United Methodist Church officiating. Cremation will follow the service.
Friends may call Sunday from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will be available from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted in her name and may be left at the funeral home.
Thelma Helene (Kooistra Loupee) Hotger
Thelma Helene (Kooistra Loupee) Hotger, 92, of Park Centre died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. David Wendel of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

The daughter of John and Minnie (Brand) Kooistra, she was born Oct. 2, 1911, in Jasper County. She was a 1928 graduate of Newton Senior High School. On Oct. 15, 1932, she married Ruskin Loupee in Killduff. Later, in the fall of 1978, she married Clarence Hotger. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church and a bridge club.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Carolyn Loupee of Marion and Larry and Mary Anne Loupee of Newton; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; six brothers, Walter, Elmer, Harold, Les, Don and Merlyn; and one sister, Jane Reynolds.
