NEWTON — Kathy (Van Essen) Whittlesey, 52, of Newton died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Lt. Ronald Cook of The Salvation Army officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted in her name and may be left at the funeral home.
Lou Ann Mettler
COLFAX — Lou Ann Mettler, 68, of Colfax died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral services were held today at Ankeny Funeral Home in Ankeny. The body was cremated following the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
Survivors include her husband, Robert E. Mettler; four daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Don "Butch" Rice of Newton, Julie and Kevin Moss of Bondurant, Michelle and Brian Mettler of Newton and Kathy and Pat Carmody of Solon; four sons and their wives, Randy and Linda Sapp of Mingo, Gary and Sue Sapp of Des Moines, Bob and Rose Mettler of Des Moines and Ed and Kim Mettler of Newton; 20 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Archie and Vera McKitrick.
Maggie L. Foster
KELLOGG — Maggie L. Foster, 84, of Kellogg died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at her home.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Burial will be at Our Silent City Cemetery
in Kellogg.
Friends may call Wednesday, beginning at 3 p.m., at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.
Delmar J. M. Doty
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Delmar J. M. Doty, 81, of Colorado Springs, Colo., formerly of Newton, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Pikes Peak Hospice.
Funeral services were held Sept. 9 at Calvary United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs, Colo. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery
with Rose Croix services.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pikes Peak Hospice, 825 East Pikes Peak Ave., Colorado Springs, Colo. 80903, or to Calvary United Methodist Church, 4210 Austin Bluffs Parkway, Colorado Springs, Colo. 80918.
The son of Ted and Audrey Doty, he was born Sept. 9, 1922, in Lovilia. He grew up in Newton and worked for the Maytag Company. He was a member of the staff that designed the automatic washer. He and his family moved to Colorado Springs in 1954. He worked for Colorado Springs Parks Department and various architectural offices before establishing his own design firm in 1980.
Mr. Doty was active in several Methodist churches in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was a certified lay speaker and local pastor. He was the minister of youth at Trinity United Methodist Church and minister of Outreach at Central United Methodist Church.
Mr. Doty was a member of the Iowa Masonic Lodge No. 59, the Colorado Springs Consistory and Al Kaly Shrine. He was a member of the Homebuilders Association of Colorado Springs and served on the board, the Code Review chairman, an honorary life member, and he was Associate of the Year.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte; two daughters and sons-in-law, Chardell and John Powell and Debi and Jerry Snodgrass; four grandsons; a great-granddaughter; a sister, Durella Meyer of Newton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dorman Doty.
Verba R. Dodd
BAXTER — Verba R. Dodd, 80, of Baxter died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Gene Bucklin of Baxter Evangelical Free Church officiating. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery
in Baxter.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials will be accepted in her name and may be left at the funeral home.
The daughter of Andrew and Maude (Williams) Nichol, she was born Sept. 26, 1923, in rural Rhodes. On Feb. 1, 1939, she married Lloyd A. Dodd in Newton. She was a homemaker and was a resident of the Baxter area for 63 years.
She is survived by her husband; a son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Sue Dodd of Colo; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Irene Bartholomew of Davenport.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Reuben, Walter, Ray and Furley Nichol; and four sisters, Mary Harre, Margaret Breese, Alice Pierce and Betty Nichol in infancy.
Bradley Stephen Cratty
COLFAX — Bradley Stephen Cratty, 21, formerly of Colfax died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Colfax First Baptist Church with the Rev. Phil Butler and the Rev. Danny DuRocher officiating. Burial will be at Colfax Cemetery
with full military rites provided by USAF Honor Guard, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb.
Visitation will be held today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the church. Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church. Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax is handling arrangements.
The son of John K. and Carmen D. (Madison) Cratty, he was born Oct. 27, 1982, in Harriman, Tenn. He graduated from Colfax-Mingo High School in 2001, where he was active in wrestling and football. As a member of the First Baptist Church, he was active in youth activities and mission trips. He also was involved with the Boy Scouts. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Following a tour of duty in Iraq and Kuwait, he returned home to marry Tracee Tewksbury on April 18 in Las Vegas, Nev. He was transferred to Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska, in early September where his wife was already stationed.
Survivors include his wife, Tracee and her family; his parents, John and Carmen of Colfax; a sister, Toni and her husband David Hostetter of Washington; and three nieces.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Tom and JoAnn Reynolds and Jack Bougher and Lee Madison, as well as two uncles and an infant cousin.
Melvin Cleverley
BAXTER — Melvin "Casey" Cleverley, 75, formerly of Baxter died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, in Indianola.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery
in Baxter.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Boyd-Davis Funeral Home in Baxter, where his family will be present to greet friends. Memorials may be directed to his family.
Esther Izora Cunningham
GRINNELL — Esther Izora Cunningham, 92, of Mayflower Care Center in Grinnell, formerly of Kellogg, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at the center.
Funeral services were held today at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Morris Hurd of the United Methodist Church in Marengo officiating. Burial was at Our Silent City Cemetery
in Kellogg.
The daughter of Thomas and Anna Myrtle (Noel) Coburn, she was born Feb. 14, 1912, in Montezuma. She attended Grinnell area schools and Rock Creek Country School No. 5. On Oct. 12, 1927, she married Charley Cunningham in Des Moines. She was a homemaker and worked for the Maytag Hotel restaurant and Midwest Metal Stamping Company in Kellogg. She was a member of Kellogg United Methodist Church, Kellogg Museum Auxiliary and United Methodist Women. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting and travel.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Myrtle and John Henning of Hartwick and Charlotte Barge of San Diego, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a great grandchild, five sisters and four brothers.
Cecelia A. Stubbe
Cecelia A. Stubbe, 69, of Newton died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Newton with the Rev. David Smiley officiating. Burial will be at Sunnyside Cemetery
in Lakes Mills at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.
Friends may call today until 8 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted in her name and may be left at the funeral home or at the church the day of the service.
The daughter of Robert G. and Ruby V. (Springer) Doran, she was born Dec. 18, 1934, in Perry. She graduated from Perry High School in 1953 and from Iowa State Teachers College in 1957. She graduated from George Peabody College and did post graduate studies at Cambridge University in Cambridge, England, Oxford University in Oxford, England, and Drake University in Des Moines. On Aug. 10, 1957, she married Jean F. Stubbe. She taught English and drama and was the media specialist for the Newton school district for 20 years. She also taught in Peetz, Colo., and Des Moines. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Tools Chapel Questers, Skiff Auxiliary, Page Turners Book Club, Arts Connection, Jasper County Historical Society, P .Buckley Moss Society, Jasper County Retired Teachers Association and U.N.I. Alumni Association. In 2003, she received the Governor's Volunteerism Award.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Kelly E. and Paul Phinney of Denton, Texas, Sarah C. Stubbe of Waterloo and Stephanie C. Williams of Newton; a son, Lowell R. Stubbe of Newton; a grandchild; and two sisters, Maryann Lund of Carrollton, Texas, and Karla Jo Benzing of Jonesboro, Ark.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Johanna Verhoef
PELLA — Johanna Verhoef, 80, of Pella died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the Covenant Reformed Church in Pella with the Rev. Patrick Eduoard officiating. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery
in Leighton. Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella handled arrangements.
Memorials will be accepted to Pella Christian School or Oskaloosa Christian Grade School.
The daughter of Gerritt and Neeltje Van Oudenallen Griffioen, she was born April 30, 1924, in Kockengen, Utrecht, The Netherlands. She graduated from Edam High School in Holland and took nurse's training for three years. On Jan. 30, 1947, she married Simon Verhoef. When they moved to the United States, they settled in Oskaloosa. She later attended Vennard College and taught kindergarten at Oskaloosa, Prairie City and Pella Christian Grade schools. She retired in 1988. She and her husband retired to Pella.
Mrs. Verhoef enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting and gardening. She also enjoyed playing the organ and singing hymns and Dutch Psalms. She was active in Pella as a Dutch interpreter and coached the Tulip Queen and Court on the use of Dutch phrases and songs. She was an active member of the Covenant Reformed Church in Pella.
Survivors include her husband; her children and their spouses, the Rev. William and Ruth Verhoef of Redlands, Calif., Gary and Corinne Verhoef of Pella, Janny and Gerald Van Dusseldorp of Denver, Colo., and Nellie Van Haaften of Knoxville; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Emma Verheul of The Netherlands; and several nieces and nephews.
Roger Bailey
GRINNELL — Roger Bailey, 71, of Grinnell, former Maytag employee, died of cancer Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.
A public visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.
A private family burial will be held at a later date in Hazelwood Cemetery . The son of Warren and Stella (Hansen) Bailey, he was born July 24, 1933, in Grinnell. He was raised in the Grinnell area and attended rural schools and Grinnell High School. During the time of the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany. On March 7, 1953, he married Bessie
Schmidt
in Grinnell. The couple lived in Grinnell and he worked for various construction companies, Ahrens Manufacturing Company and for Eddie Anderson. He also was employed at Plant 2 of the Maytag Company for 31 years. He was a member of the Grinnell American Legion and the VFW.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Cindy Asay of Eugene, Ore.; three sons, Wayne, Loren and Eric Bailey, all of Grinnell; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one sister, Donna Yancy of Mesa, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Warren "Bud" Bailey.
