Kathy (Van Essen) Whittlesey

NEWTON — Kathy (Van Essen) Whittlesey, 52, of Newton died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Lt. Ronald Cook of The Salvation Army officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted in her name and may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Doyle "Joe" and Beverly F. (Wilson) Van Essen, she was born Aug. 9, 1952, in Des Moines. She graduated from Prairie City High School. On March 22, 1983, she married David E. Whittlesey, in Newton. She was a homemaker and a resident of Newton since 1986. She was baptized in the Monroe Presbyterian Church and attended The Salvation Army Church in Newton.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Tony Bishop and his fiancι, Missy Sites, both of Prairie City, and Eddie and Hope Whittlesey of Newton; two daughters, Holly Whittlesey and Heather Whittlesey, both of Newton; two grandchildren; her parents; and a brother, Tim Van Essen of Prairie City.

She was preceded in death by a son, Cory D. Whittlesey, in infancy and her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Robert F. Van Vark

PELLA — Robert F. Van Vark, 78, of Pella died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at Pella Regional Health Center in Pella.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Pella with the Rev. John McNabb officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella with military rites.

Visitation begins tonight and continues all day Wednesday at the Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella, where the family will be available from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church in Pella.

Lucille I. Manatt

GRINNELL — Lucille I. Manatt, 91, of Grinnell, mother of H. Eugene Manatt of Newton, died of a heart attack Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Burial will be at Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery in Brooklyn.

Friends may call today at the funeral home, where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m.

Edwin Jontz

MARSHALLTOWN — Edwin "Pope" Jontz, 86, of Marshalltown died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Laurel United Methodist Church. Burial will follow services at Riverside Cemetery with military rites.

A visitation will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Pursel-Davis Funeral Home & Crematory in Marshalltown, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family.

The son of Elmer and Mary (Johnston) Jontz, he was born June 17, 1918, in Lorimer. He received his early education in Rhodes, Collins and Mason City. He graduated from Van Cleve in 1938 and attended Chillicothe Business College and Iowa State. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in August of 1941. He graduated from armament school at Lowry Field in Denver, Colo., and then from gunnery school in Las Vegas. He received his pilot's wings in July, 1943. He was a flight instructor for B-25s for two years. After the war, he operated a G.J. Flight Instructor school for two years in Elkader.

On March 7, 1943, he married Carol Fitz in Laurel. From 1949 to 1993, they farmed south of Van Cleve. From 1968 to 1984, they operated the E Bar J Farm Supply in Baxter. He was a member of the Laurel Methodist Church and Laurel American Legion Harold Mc Broom Post No. 638. He enjoyed fishing in Canada with his friends and family.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters and sons-in-law, Barb and Jerry Gazaway and Julie and Steve Lang, all of Marshalltown, Janie and Rick Sherman of Deming, N.M.; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Doris Knoll of Marshalltown and Bonnie Trowbridge of Rhodes; and a sister-in-law, Edna Fitz of Marshalltown.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Maxine Davidson.

Linda Gifford

Linda Gifford, 62, of Newton died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will be available from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the American Cancer Society.

Maggie Lee Foster

KELLOGG — Maggie Lee Foster, 84, of Kellogg, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at her home.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Mike Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Our Silent City Cemetery in Kellogg.

Visitation hours will be held from noon until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Kellogg Historical Society or to Grinnell Regional Hospice.

The daughter of Aught and Mollie (Delk) Stepp, she was born March 14, 1920, in Monticello, Ky. She was raised and educated in Monticello, Ky., and rural schools in Jasper County. On July 3, 1950, she married LeRoy W. Foster in Montezuma. She enjoyed fishing, from the mountains of Wyoming to a small farm pond in Iowa. She enjoyed traveling, while her health allowed her to do so. Her most memorable trips were two trips to Hawaii and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. She enjoyed attending estate sales and auctions, looking for various antiques and treasures. She also enjoyed her flower garden and yard.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Faye Cartwright Hutchinson and her husband Larry of Gilbert, Ariz., Sue Cartwright Streeter of Ames; Cynthia Foster Brown and her husband Michael of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Mollie Foster Sumner and her husband Charles of Kellogg; her brother, Gordon Stepp of Grinnell; her sister, Flonnie Stepp Matherly of Grinnell; and her several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband LeRoy; her daughter Judith Cartwright Doane; her brother, Menvil Stepp; her sisters, Della Stepp, Pearl Stepp Clifton; and an infant sister.

Melvin Cleverley

BAXTER — Melvin "Casey" Cleverley, 75, formerly of Baxter, died at his residence in Indianola Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ with the Rev. Rollin Watters officiating. Burial will follow services at the Restland Cemetery in Baxter.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Boyd-Davis Funeral Home, where his family will be present to greet friends. Memorial contributions may be directed in his name to the Hospice of Jasper County or the Taylor House of Des Moines.

He was born Aug. 2, 1929, in Eldora to Charles E. and Grace B. (Barbee) Cleverley. A short time after his birth Casey's family moved to Baxter. He was raised and educated in Baxter, where he attended the Baxter schools. He was an employee of the Maytag Company, where he worked in both the machinery and the salvage departments. He retired in 1993 after 46 years of service to Maytag. He enjoyed traveling, family fishing trips, auctioneering, playing cards and shooting pool, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife Lorena of Indianola; a son and daughter-in-law, Danny Laverne and Debbie Cleverley of Corydon; a daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Byron Kern of Norwalk; two sisters, Amy Parsons of Newton and Betty Wright of Baxter; a brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Dolores Cleverley of Newton; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother in infancy and his daughter Judy.

Bertha M. McConeghay

Bertha M. McConeghay, 85, of Newton died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Park Centre Care Care Center in Newton. Services are pending at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.

James F. Henchy

STONY POINT, N.Y. — James F. Henchy, 51, of Stony Point, N.Y., formerly of Newton, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Sept. 16 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Stony Point, N.Y. Memorials will be accepted to The Make A Wish Foundation in his name.

Michael J. Higgins Funeral Services in Stony Point, N.Y. handled arrangements.

The son of Mary and Michael Henchy, he was born Jan. 17, 1952, in New York City. He lived in Pomona, N.Y., and Cornwall, N.Y., as well as in Newton and several other locations in Iowa. He served as a military policeman during the Vietnam War. He graduated from Albertus Magnus High School and was a college graduate with a degree in criminal justice. He worked as a deputy with the U.S. Marshalls office, and also worked for the North Rockland School District.

Survivors include a son, James of Newton; a brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Patricia; and four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary and Alex Jamieson, Betty and Jim Brand, Eileen and Cliff Roma and Julia Ruderman.

Elizabeth Barrickman

MELBOURNE — Elizabeth "Betty" Barrickman of Melbourne died Aug. 27 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Baxter with a luncheon served following the service.

John Newcomer

NEWBURG — John Newcomer, 65, of Newburg died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Newburg-Chester Congregational Church in Newburg with the Rev. Jeff Maskevich officiating. Burial will be held at Chester Cemetery near Newburg.

Friends may call after noon Friday at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the Newburg-Chester Congregational Church.

The son of Frank and Lucille (Thompson) Newcomer, he was born Aug. 13, 1939, in Grinnell. He was raised in the Newburg area and graduated from Newburg High School in 1957. He was a lifelong resident of the Newburg community, where he operated a grain and livestock farm. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, Newburg Farmer's Co-op and the Newburg-Chester Congregational Church.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Charles and Patricia Newcomer of Des Moines and one niece, one nephew and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Earl Klein

Earl Klein, 77, of Newton died today, Feb. 27, 2007, at Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Services are pending at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton.

Ulin E. Holder

LATHROP, Mo. — Ulin E. Holder, 79, of Lathrop, Mo., formerly of Newton, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, at Liberty Hospital in Lathrop, Mo.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be later at Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.

The family will greet friends with a coffee time following the service at the funeral home. Memorials to the donor's choice may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Lois; brother, Kenneth (Bess) Holder; three sisters, Pauline Osborn, Velma Davis and Judy (Carl) Fountain; and nieces, nephews, many other relatives, and friends.

Ulin was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jerry Holder; brother, William Holder; and sister, Elizabeth Osborn.
