Reva M. Lowry

A funeral service Reva M. Lowry of Mingo will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at the United Church of Ira in Ira.

The family will greet friends from 1 p.m. Saturday until the time of service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the United Church of Ira or to the Alzheimer’s Association. Memorials may be left at the church on the day of the service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.

Reva M. Lowry, the daughter of Loren and Gladys (Kent) Murphy, was born Jan. 16, 1926, in Newton, Iowa. She and her sister, Eva, were the first twins born at Skiff Memorial Hospital.

Reva graduated from Mingo High School in 1944 and was a lifelong resident of rural Jasper County. She was united in marriage with James D. Lowry on June 1, 1947, in Ira, Iowa.

Reva was a loving wife, mother, grandma, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend. She loved spending time with family and friends, singing and traveling. Reva and Jim ran the family farm, and she also enjoyed working at the First State Bank in Colfax. She was a member of the United Church of Ira, Federated Women’s Club, Christian Women’s Society and the National Grange.

Reva died on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, at the Trinity Center at Luther Park in Des Moines at the age of 84. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jim; sister, Eva Kling; and brother, Kenneth Murphy.

Those left to honor Reva’s memory are her three sons, Doug of Newnan of Georgia, Joe of Mingo and Bill (Joni) of Waukee; her three daughters, Jane (Gary) Thomsen of Scottsdale, Ariz., Merri Lowry (Rich Sickora) of Altoona and Gerri (Don) Heinrich of Urbandale; 14 grandchildren, Rachel, Jeremy, Jason, Calli, Lauren (Corey), Claire, Megan, Stephanie, Ross, Austen, Jessica, Kole, John and Jake; great-grandchild, Kane; her brother, Marvin (Angie) Murphy of Mesa, Ariz.; sisters-in-law, Beverly Murphy of Cedar Falls and Bobbie Killion of Kansas City, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Jean Van Brogen

Jean Van Brogen, 77, of Newton passed away Monday morning, Nov. 22, 2010, at Nelson Manor Care Center in Newton.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials are being designated in Jean’s name.

Kenneth John Lamb Sr.
Kenneth John Lamb Sr., 61, of Newton went to be with the Lord on Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at his home in Newton.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at the Newton Foursquare Church, 1510 S. Eighth Ave. E., with the Rev. Dottie Black and the Rev. Dustin Black officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be at Union Cemetery in Newton with military honors. A luncheon will follow at the Pence-Reese Tribute Center.
Memorials may be designated in his name or to the Newton Foursquare Church and may be left at the funeral home.
Ken was born on April 11, 1949, in Newton to John Thomas and Mary Laverna (Witte) Lamb. He was the third of seven children and attended country school at Mariposa #9 and later attended Newton Senior High School. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971, during which time he was stationed in Korea. After returning home to Newton, he met and was united in marriage to Deena Rae Walker on Nov. 26, 1971, in Newton. To this union, three children were born: Kenny Jr., Mandi and Tabitha. The family was completed with the adoption of Jamie and Kylie Lamb on May 4, 1998.
Ken was employed at Midwest Manufacturing in Kellogg, where he was a supervisor, for 40 years. His life changed dramatically after he accepted Jesus as his Savior and Lord in March of 1980. Ken enjoyed being with his church family; attending tractor shows; taking vacations with his family, especially to the Black Hills; watching sports, especially the Miami Dolphins; fixing things for his family; and spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He retired in 2008 and enjoyed the opportunity to spend even more time with his family. He was a member of the Newton Foursquare Church and was a lifetime member of the VFW.
Ken is survived by his wife, Deena; his sons, Kenny and Jamie; his daughters, Mandi, Tabitha and Kylie; his grandchildren, Kendi, K.J. III and Austin of Newton and Daphne and Ezekiel of Knoxville; his brothers, Etmer Lamb of Ojai, Calif., Dan Lamb of Newton, Ron Lamb of Des Moines and Jim (Linda) Lamb of Reasnor; his sisters, Vi “Pip” (Pete) Hildreth of Des Moines and Linda Massengale of Brooklyn; his mother-in-law, Ramah Walker of Newton; his sister-in-laws, Alice (Bill) Pendleton and Judy (Dave) Shedlock, all of Newton; his brother-in-law, Chuck (Linda) Walker of Newton; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and his church family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Ivan Walker.

Vivian Lucille Heck
Vivian Lucille Heck, 78, passed away on Friday evening, January 7, 2011, at the Newton Health Care.
Funeral services for Vivian will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 13, 2011, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. In LIEU of flowers: Memorials in Vivian's name are being designated.
Vivian, the daughter of Joseph Ralph and Alise Alberta (Walker) Townsend, was born August 25, 1932 in Newton. A lifelong resident of the Newton area, she attended Newton Schools. Vivian was employed by the Vernon Company in Newton, as a supervisor, retiring in 1994.
On January 25, 1948, Vivian was united in marriage with Lyle E. Heck in Newton. She devoted her life to her husband and family, and was a past member of the Newton V.F.W. Auxiliary, the Ladies of the Moose, UAW Local #997 Retirees and attended the Four Square Church in Newton.
Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Lyle on March 6, 1996; her daughter-in-law Karen on November 2, 2010; a great-granddaughter Jessica Lindley and her brother Darrell Maxwell.
Those left to honor Vivian's memory include her daughters: Mary Ann (Rick) Brown of Kellogg, IA and Rhonda Rae (Tim) Saunders of Newton; her sons: Nick Joseph (Joyce) Heck of Newton, John William Heck of Newton and Edward Lee (Cindi) Heck of Grinnell, IA; her eleven grandchildren: Tracy Lindley, Troy Heck, Shelly Fitzgerald, Todd Heck, JoAnn Tratchel, Jason Heck, Kristin Titus, Kelli Brown, Kayla Brown, Joshua Saunders and Jennifer Saunders; twenty-five great-grandchildren; and her many friends.
Calling hours will be Wednesday with the family will be from 5 - 7pm at Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home, 310 N. 2nd Ave. E., Newton, IA. The funeral will be Thursday at 10:30 at Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home, Newton with Pastor Dottie Black, officiating.
Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery , Newton.

Clarence Irvin Burton
Clarence Irvin Burton, 90, of Newton, passed away Saturday evening, January 8, 2011, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Private family services for Irvin was Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011, held by the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. In LIEU of flowers: Memorials in Irvin's name are being designated to Hospice of Jasper County, the Monarch Wing.
C. Irvin Burton, the son of Albert Lee and Dora Pearl (Turner) Burton, was born May 29, 1920, in Jasper County, Iowa. A lifelong resident of the Newton area, he had attended Newton Schools. He later served his country with the US Army, during World War II. Irvin was employed by the Maytag Company in Newton.
In 1943, Irvin was united in marriage with Norma Jean Bowen in Missouri. To this union three children were born, Connie, Denny and Terri. Norma Jean preceded him in death on June 30, 1990. In 1993, Irvin was united in marriage with Hazel L. Steward Burg in Newton. He devoted his life to his wife and family, and was a member of the Newton American Legion Post #111, Newton V.F.W. Post #1655 and the Newton Moose Lodge.
Irvin was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Norma Jean; a sister Edith Findley; and his beloved pet Mindy.
Those left to honor Irvin's memory include his wife Hazel; his daughters and a son: daughter Connie (Mike) Trueman of Lake of the Woods, MN, son Denny Burton of Newton and daughter Terri (Mike) Burton-Wire of Urbandale, IA; his two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; several step-children, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; his sisters: Velma Spence of Traer, IA and Mabel Kader of Arizona; and his many friends.
Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery , on Wednesday, Jan. 12,

James Joseph Horn
James Joseph Horn, 94, of Newton, passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 11, 2011, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral services for Joe will be 11:00 am, Monday, January 17, 2011, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the services, at the funeral home. In LIEU of flowers: Memorials in Joe's name are being designated to Hospice of Jasper County, Monarch Wing and First Lutheran Church.
Joe, the son of Walter Lacey and Fern (Stephensen) Horn, was born February 29, 1916, in Newton. Joe was a graduate of the Newton Senior High, and had served his country with the US Army as a Captain in the Medical Corps, during World War II. Joe was employed in retail management in the lumber business.
On February 26, 1944, Joe was united in marriage with Genevieve Anderson in Topeka, Kansas. To this union two daughters were born, Janet and Judy. He devoted his life to his wife and family, and was a member of the Newton V.F.W. Post #1655 and the First Lutheran Church.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Genevieve; a sister Lois Walker and a brother David Frederick Horn.
Those left to honor Joe's memory include his two daughters: Janet I. (Gene) Nelson of Minneapolis, MN and Judy Ann Kussmaul of St. Croix,Virgin Islands; his two grandchildren: Angela Marie (Berent) Larson and Joel Brandon (Wendy) Nelson; two great-grandchildren; a brother Walter Herbert Horn of Newton; and his many friends.
Visitation with the family will be 9:30 - 11am at Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home, 310 N. 2nd Ave. E., with Rev. Harold Vrankin officiating.
Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery , Newton.

James Laverne Myrick
James Laverne Myrick, 62, passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown. Memorial services for Jim will be Saturday, February 19, 2011, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Newton, Rev. Merle Smith, Chaplain at Skiff Medical Center in Newton, will officiate. Pence~Reese Funeral Home in Newton, have been entrusted with the arrangements. In LIEU of flowers, memorials in Jim's name are being designated.
Jim was born Aug. 25, 1948 in Newton, the son of Charles L. and Mildred I. (Hobbs) Myrick. He graduated from Newton Senior High, and attended college at U.N.I. and Iowa State. He served his country with the US Air Force, during the Vietnam era. A longtime resident of Newton, he had lived in Las Vegas, as well as Marshalltown.
Jim was employed as a kitchen storekeeper at the Nevada Test Site, North of Las Vegas. He enjoyed his family and friends, his photography, and a longtime member of AA.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a brother John E. Myrick.
Those left to honor Jim's memory include his brother Charles LeRoy Myrick of Newton; two nephews and a niece; and many friends.
The funeral will be at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 223 E. 4th Street N., Newton, at a later date.
Burial will be in Palo Alto Cemetery , Newton.

Kathy Croce loved Jesus. She lived her life to serve Him, in her family, at church, and in the community, volunteering at Hephzibah House in Newton, and at the Women's Correctional Facility in Mitchellville. Her joy in the Lord was seen throughout her many social circles, spanning contacts worldwide, and through the strength and peace she showed during her three year battle with breast cancer. Her zest for life was shared daily with her family- her husband of 28 years, Jon Croce, her five children; Dawn (Mitch) Day of Clayton, NC, Debbie (John) Wilson of Albion, IA, Jonathan Croce of Ankeny, IA, Jennifer (Mike) Traub of Howell, MI, and Jackie Nichols of Clayton, NC, her 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Kathy's life will be held at Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton on Wednesday January 19 at 10:00AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Jasper County or Hephzibah House in Newton.

Clarence Goodsell, 78, of Newton, died of cancer, Friday, April 13, at USA Healthcare in Newton.
Memorial services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Local 997 Union Hall in Newton. Pence Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Lawrence "Buck" Nearmyer, 78, of 1630 S. 50th Ave. E., died of cancer Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. John Zieman, pastor of United Presbyterian Church and Chaplain Merle Smith of Skiff Medical Center, officiating. Burial will be at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton.
Visitation will be Wednesday after 4 p.m. at the funeral home where family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
