PRAIRIE CITY -- Ben Lourens, 92, of Prairie City, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the First Reformed Church in Prairie City with the Rev. Doug Dobbie officiating. Burial will be at Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City.

Elise M. (Tiedje) Wise

Elise M. (Tiedje) Wise, 94, of 500 First Street North died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003 at Park Centre in Newton.

Memorial services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Linda Butler officiating. A private family burial will be held at Newton Union Cemetery . Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

James W. Bunn
THE VILLAGES, Fla. —James W. Bunn, 70, of The Villages, Fla., died Friday, July 25, 2008, at The Villages Regional Hospital in The Villages, Fla. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 31, at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church with Father Michael Rowell officiating. The Beyers Funeral Home in Lady Lake, Fla., is in charge of arrangements. In leu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942, or to Holy Trinity Episcopal Heritage Fund, 2201 Spring Lake Road, Fruitland Park, FL 34731. James was born in Newton and had settled in The Villages, Fla., two years ago after relocating from St. Petersburg, Fla. James worked as a plant manager. In his earlier years, he was a Maytag College Scholarship recipient and was selected to attend Iowa Boy’s State and Boy’s Nation meeting President Dwight Eisenhower. As an adult, he was a former member of the Holly Tree Country Club in Simpsonville, S.C., was an avid golfer and accepted an invitation to play at Augusta National. He also enjoyed Clemson University sports. Survivors include his companion, Julie Lewis of The Villages, Fla.; two sons, Randall J. (Melissa) Bunn of Holly Springs, N.C., and Todd Bunn of Winchester, Va.; one grandson, Colin Bunn and one granddaughter, MacKenzie Bunn, both of Winchester, Va.; one brother, Ed (Myrna) Bunn of Colfax and one sister, Cheryll (Patrick) Ross of Glenwood.

Margaret Randolph
TACCOA, Ga. — Margaret A. Randolph, 86, of Taccoa, Ga., formerly of Newton, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at her son Gary’s home in Toccoa, Ga. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton. The family will greet friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service, at 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials to the First United Methodist Church or to the VFW Auxiliary may be left at the funeral home. The daughter of Edgar Lewis and Gladys Alice (Sayles) Payne, she was born on July 21, 1922, in Perry. She lived in Newton from 1925 until moving to Toccoa, Ga., in 2000. She was united in marriage to her first husband, Blyde W. Harper and she was united in marriage to her second husband, William Frank Randolph on Jan. 9, 1948, in Newton. A 1940 graduate of Newton Senior High School, she worked in the school lunch program at Emerson Hough School from 1976-1992 and was a nurse’s aide at Heritage Manor for five plus years. Margaret was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton, VFW Post 1655, VFW Post 1655 Women’s Auxiliary and other VFW organizations and the Kellogg American Legion Post. She was a pioneer in the development of the Jasper County Association for Retarded Citizens (then called Beacon Light School). She also loved camping with her friends in the Good Sam Club. Survivors include two sons, Gary (Joyce) Harper and Robert J. “Bobby” Harper, all of Toccoa, Ga.; two granddaughters, Jodi Lynn (Patrick) Spink of Auburn, Ga. and Tracy Sue (George) Burtz of Dacula, Ga.; four great-grandchildren, Nicholas Harper Spink, Abbey Spink, Alex Burtz, and Adam Burtz; and one brother, Melvin E. Payne of Newton. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Blyde W. Harper in 1945, who died while serving in World War II; and her second husband, William Frank Randolph in 1993.

Louise Warnick
Louise A. Warnick, the daughter of Albert and Ethel Anderson McGruder, was born March 1, 1944, in Sterling, Colo. Lou loved her family. She enjoyed her grandchildren’s sporting events, shopping with her daughter and granddaughter, taking car rides, girls night out with her friends and cooking and baking. Lou had retired as a manager from Capstone and worked as a receptionist at Dr. Martin’s office. Louise passed away on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. She was 64 years old. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edwin Warnick, and her special friend, Curtis Petersen. Those left to honor Louise’s memory include her daughter, Dixie (Jim) Epp of Des Moines; her grandchildren, Whitney Epp and Jake Epp; her extended family, Dan and Pat Epp, Tom Epp, Danielle Epp, Todd and Renae Epp, Sidney Epp, Macy Epp; the Curtis Petersen family; and her many friends. A very special thank you to her dearest friends, Joyce Avery, Diane Huetter, Wilma Mott, Bonnie and Glenn Jontz and Hospice of Jasper County. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Dec 1, at the funeral home. Memorials may be designated in her name.

Louise Hahn
NORTH ENGLISH — Louise Emma Hahn, 100, died following a short illness on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at the English Valley Care Center in North English. A celebration of life memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. The Rev. James Stout will officiate. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery . Visitation will be on Saturday from 1 p.m. until service time. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com under obituaries. A memorial fund has been established for the North English Library. Louise E. Hahn was born on Oct. 3, 1908, in Brooklyn, a daughter of Benjamin F. and Ion (Shannon) Torrance. She grew up in the Brooklyn community and graduated from Brooklyn High School in1927. She married Lloyd E. Davidson on June 22, 1936. Louise lived in Marengo, Aurora, Ill., in California, Kellogg and later in North English. She taught school and worked in retail sales. She was later united in marriage to Leland Claude Hahn on Aug. 21, 1958, in Greeley, Colo. They owned and operated a locker in Kellogg for 13 years retiring in 1970. Leland preceded her in death in January 1998. Louise enjoyed reading. She became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in June 2000. She shared the excitement of her 100th birthday with all of her closest relatives on Oct. 3, 2008, at the English Valley Care Center. She is survived by a daughter Judy (Dave) Hergesheimer of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; step-daughters Johnette (Gary) Timm of Guernsey and Linda (Lester) York of Iowa Falls; a step-son Winston (LaVonne) Hahn of Atoka, Tenn; two granddaughters, Anne Judge and Leslie Martinez; six step-grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Louise was preceded in death by her husband; an infant son, Terry Davidson; and sisters, Esther Averill and Phyllis Hall.

Danny Haney Sr.
Danny N. Haney Sr., 53, of Newton died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 17, at the First Assembly of God Church in Newton. The Rev. M. DeWayne Anderson of the First Assembly of God Church in Newton will officiate. The family will greet friends following the service at the church. Memorials in Danny’s name may be left at the church on the morning of the service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton, where service arrangements are being handled. The son of Fritz L. Haney and Mildred Johnson, Danny was born on Feb. 7, 1955, in Kermit, Texas. Danny has lived in Newton since 1993. Danny, a student at the time of his death, was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Newton and was a Chaplain in the Christian Motorcycle Association. Danny loved to be with his family and friends. He enjoyed people watching and riding motorcycles. Survivors include his two sons, Danny, Jr. (Carrie) Haney of Colfax and Michael Dewes of Jackson Hole, Wyo.; his three daughters, Carolyn (Brandon) Eastman of California, Kristen (Walter) Ponce of Newton and Mindie Woodard of Council Bluffs; 13 grandchildren, Byron, Walter, Alex, Austin, Joshua, Anthony, Jordyn, Zander, Samatha, Lucas, Brandon, Payton and Abigail; his father, Fritz L. Haney of California; ten brothers; and six sisters. Danny was preceded in death by his mother.

Wilma Creed
Wilma Kleinendorst Creed of Newton, the daughter of Neal and Elizabeth VanHemert Kleinendorst, was born June 11, 1915, near Otley. On Nov. 20, 1934, Wilma was united in marriage with DeVerne C. Creed in Pella. Wilma had worked as an accountant for Swift and Company then for the Maytag Company, retiring from the office supply department. Wilma was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was involved with DeVerne as a youth sponsor for many years.She enjoyed embroidering, making samplers for her family, cooking and baking and tending to her rose garden, her tomatoes and rhubarb. Wilma died on Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, at her home in Newton. She was 93 years old. Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, DeVerne, on Dec. 28, 2005; her brothers, Cornie, John and Lester; and her sisters, Elsie, Josephine, Leona, Lorena Faye and Beverly. Those left to honor Wilma’s memory include her daughter, Linda Beth (Jim) Tiedje of Lansing, Mich.; her grandchildren, Anne (Skip) Vendola, Garth (Lori) Tiedje and Meredith (Vince) Voisin; her great grandchildren, Kalea Creed Vendola, Finn Vendola, Ainsley Vendola and Sophia Voisin; her brother and sisters, Bernice (Frank) York of Newton, Bob (Dorothy) Kleinendorst of Newton, LaVonne (Gene) Talbott of Olathe, Kan., and Vickie (Max) Calhoon of Aurora, Ill.; her sisters-in-law, Shirley Creed, Darlene DeBolt and Betty Jacobs all of Des Moines; a special niece, Karen Klouda DeVore of Newton; special friends, Vernelle and Larry Wylie of Newton; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at the First United Methodist Church in Newton. Friends may greet the family following the service. Memorials may be designated to the church. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Lorie L. James

KELLOGG - Lorie L. James, 42, of Kellogg, died of congestive heart failure Wednesday, June 27, 2001 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith officiating. Cremation will follow the service.

Friends may call after noon Sunday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton where family will be available from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorials will be accepted at the funeral home in her name.

The daughter of Rodger K. and Rose Ruple James, she was born Aug. 11, 1958, in rural Newton. She was a 1976 graduate of Newton Senior High School. She lived in Long Beach, Calif., from 1963 to 1969, and also lived in Newton and Kellogg. She married Rick LaRose in 1995 in Newton. Ms. James was a member of Eagles Lodge in Grinnell and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Josh Woodard of Woodward; her parents of Newton; maternal grandfather, Kenneth Ruple; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, paternal grandparents, a niece and a nephew in infancy.

Jean P. Von Seggern

Jean P. Von Seggern, 73, of 304 W. 14th St. S. died of cancer Monday, Aug. 20, 2001 at Heritage Manor Care Center in Newton.

Memorial services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Matthew Martens, pastor of the First Lutheran Church of Newton officiating. The body was cremated.

The family will visit with friends following the memorial service with a coffee time at the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted to First Lutheran Church, Hospice of Jasper County or to the American Cancer Society, and may be left at the funeral home.

Fern H. Whittlesey

Fern H. Whittlesey, 83, of 1201 S. 8th Ave. E. died of a heart attack Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001 at her home.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith of Skiff Medical Center officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery . Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call today at the funeral home where family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m.

Winston Wood

Winston Wood, 75, of 604 E. 3rd St. S. Apt. 1, died of a heart attack Friday, Dec. 21, 2001 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola with Pastor Brian Hardee and Pastor Kenneth Van Loon officiating. Burial will be at Smyma Cemetery in Clarke County.

Visitation will be Wednesday after 9 a.m. at the funeral home and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with the family prior to services.

William M. Schafer

William M. "Bill" Schafer, 78, of 503 E. 19th St. S. died of heart failure Friday, Feb. 8, 2002 at his home. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

COLFAX -- Harold "Red" Rogers, 82, of Colfax died Friday, April 12, 2003 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax is handling arrangements.

PRAIRIE CITY -- Vera A. White, 72, of Prairie City died Friday, Aug. 9, 2003 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

CEDAR FALLS -- Carol Rae Biehl, 43, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Newton, died from complications of multiple sclerosis Friday, Feb. 8, 2002 at her home. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Stella Wade

COLFAX -- Stella Wade, 89, of Colfax died of heart failure Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002 at Baxter Health Care Center in Baxter.

Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax is handling arrangements.

Maxine Wood

Maxine Wood, 78, of 420 E. 6th St. N. died of a heart attack Thursday, June 27, 2002 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Wallace Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

John F. Cannon

PACE, Fla. - John F. Cannon, 78, of Pace, Fla., formerly of Newton, died June 17, 2002 in a local hospital in Pace, Fla.

Funeral services were held June 21 at the Lewis Funeral Home Chapel in Milton, Fla., with the Rev. John Webb officiating. Burial was at Milton Cemetery.

A native of Newton, he graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1940. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, was a member of the Elks Lodge #2377 and Moose Lodge #557, and attended Pace United Methodist Church. He had been a resident of Pace for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Katherine; a son, Kevin of Dalton, Ga.; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Kevin Avery of Pace, Fla.; three grandchildren; four brothers, Dolar of Ames, Harlan of Colfax, Floyd of Oceanside, Calif., and Bruce of Cottonwood, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Junior "Jay' Karsten

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Junior "Jay" Karsten, 80, of Bowling Green, Ky., formerly of Colfax, died of cancer Friday, Dec. 21, 2002 at his home.

The body was cremated and memorial services will be held Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. at the Kimberly Funeral Home in Bowling Green.

Mary Roseburrough

MARSHALLTOWN -- Mary Roseburrough, 84, of Marshalltown, formerly of Newton, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001 at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center.

Funeral services were held today at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Bernard Grady officiating. Burial was at the Sacred Heart Cemetery near Newton.
