Edith Bell
Edith Bell, 99, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 21, at her daughter’s home in Buffalo Grove, Ill. Funeral services and interment were held Thursday, Sept. 25 in Winfield.
Laura Edith Reed was born Sept. 26, 1903 on a farm south of Winfield in Henry County, Iowa, to Mary Irene Freshour and Charles William Reed. On April 4, 1923, she married Walter Price Owens and the couple farmed near Olds, Iowa. The couple had two daughters, Mary Burnett and Alice Evelyn. Mr., Owens died in 1936 of spinal meningitis. Edith continued to farm, living with her parents, until 1941, when she and the girls moved to Ottumwa where she worked for John Morrell and Company. In 1944, she married Raymond Bruce Bell. The couple had one daughter, Ann. They moved to Webster City in 1951. Mr. Bell worked for Raven Millwork and Lumber Company, and Mrs. Bell was a homemaker. In 1999, Mrs. Bell moved to Buffalo Grove, Ill., to make her home with her daughter and son-in-law.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Frank Reed, her husbands, Price Owens and Raymond Bell, her daughter Mary Burnett Owens, and her stepdaughter, Allison Bell Raven. She is survived by two daughters, Alice Evelyn Skinner of Ottumwa, Ann Bell Brazeal (Terry) of Buffalo Grove, Ill., one step-son-in-law, Walter Raven, Webster City; five grandchildren, Cynthia Skinner Axtell (Phill), John Skinner (Linda), Nancy Skinner Johnson (Rick), Keith Skinner (Cathy), and Sara Brazeal White (Eric); two-step-grandchildren, Michael Raven (Christine) and David Raven (DeAnne); 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters.
Edith was a member of the Smoky Hall Club in Winfield. She loved gardening and was an excellent cook and seamstress. She was a woman of incredible physical strength, doing hard manual labor on the farm, and said she could work all day and dance all night. She had an amazing memory for people, dates and events. She greatly loved her family and friends, always showed her concern for them and their problems.

Linda Woodall
Linda Woodall, 68, of Kamrar, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004 at the Israel Family Hospice House at Ames. Funeral
services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Pres-
byterian Church, east of Kamrar, with Mark Petrie officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and after 11 a.m. at the church on Tuesday.
Linda Jean Fonken, daughter of Conrad and Etta Hassebrock Fonken, was born March 2, 1935 at Kamrar. She received her education in the Kamrar Public School, graduating in 1952. She also attended Waldorf College for 2 years. On July 26, 1958, she married Dick Ross Woodall at the First Presbyterian Church at Kamrar. The couple farmed east of Kamrar and continued to reside on the family farm after retirement. She had worked at the First State Bank at Webster City, a health care nursing assistant in the Webster City area and also was a homemaker. Most recently, they were caretakers for the First Presbyterian Church and Cemetery.
Mrs. Woodall is survived by her husband, Dick; sons and daughters-in-law, Tony and Renee Woodall of Kamrar; Andy and Becky RockowWoodall of Webster City; Alex and Shelley Woodall of Kamrar; grandchildren, Trey, Rylee, Jenna, Jessica and Jillian Woodall, all of Kamrar; brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Lloyd and Mildred Fonken of Fort Dodge; sister-in-law, Doris Fonken of Kamrar; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers and sister-in-law, Lester, Lee and Norma Fonken.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served as the church organist for 20 years. Linda enjoyed golfing, dancing, gardening, playing the organ and piano. She was a very caring and devoted mother and grandmother and had great pleasure in sharing in her grandchildren’s successes.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bliss
Cancer Center at Ames or the Israel Family Hospice House at Ames.

Christopher Lee Bergman
Christopher Lee Bergman, 35, Stratford, died Jan. 30, 2004 from complications resulting from injuries suffered in an auto accident in 1988. Services are Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Stratford at 10:30 a.m. with burial in Hardin Township Cemetery . Visitation is Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the Stark Welin Funeral Home, Stratford and Tuesday at the church from 9 a.m. to service time.
Fern Ione (Olson) Egenes, 84, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at her home in Ames, Iowa. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004 at the Becker Funeral Home in Jewell, Iowa. Burial will be at the Homewood Cemetery in Ellsworth, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time. A memorial fund has been established for Homeward Hospice in Ames and Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth. Becker Funeral Home in Jewell is entrusted with the arrangements.

Carter A. Johnson
Carter A. Johnson, 58, of Webster City, died Monday, February 2, 2004, at his home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Foster Funeral Home,
with Rev. Joe Lambert officiating. Burial will be in the Washington Lutheran Cemetery , south of Duncombe at a later date. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and prior to the service on Thursday.
Carter Albert Johnson, son of Joseph and Muriel Brownfield Johnson, was born Sept.18, 1945 at Webster City. He received his education at a rural school northwest of Webster City and the Webster City School System, graduating in 1963. In August of 1965, he married Helen Marie Green at Fort Dodge. They later divorced. He started farming with his father on the family farm, then farmed with his brother, Dean as the Johnson Bros. Farm. Dean moved to Hawaii and Carter continued the farming operation until 1998. On June 8, 1985, he married Jean Scott Tarbill at Twin Lakes. They later divorced. He was co-owner of J & C Construction. In December of 2003, he retired because of failing health.
Carter is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Tim Bergman of Stratford; Julie and Chris Kudron of Bolingbrook. Il.; son, Jamie Johnson and special friend, Heather Kolacia, both of Fort Dodge; step-children, Cathy and Craig Groves of Webster City; 12 grandchildren; special companion, Carla Welch of Webster City; his parents, Joe and Patricia Johnson of Ames; Muriel and J.D. Stark of Palm Desert, Ca.; brother and sister-in-law, Dean and Roma Johnson of Kailua-Kona, Hi.; sisters, Ashley Lewis and Amber Johnson, both of Palm Desert; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lori Johnson in 2000.
He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting. His winter projects included building furniture and special items for his family.
The family prefers no flowers.

Daryl L. Hetland
Daryl L. Hetland, 61, of Downey, CA., died Sunday, January 25, 2004 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Williams with Rev. Tom Hunt officiating. Burial will be at the Rose Grove Cemetery southwest of Williams. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Foster Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
Daryl Lynn Hetland, son of Silas and Beatrice Hoffman Hetland was born December 7, 1942 at Williams. He was a graduate of North East Hamilton High School and received a B. A. in accounting from Cal State at Los Angeles. On March 17, 1968, he married Elyse Ann Schutt at Webster City. The couple resided in Downey, where he was employed as an accountant for Sweco Company for over 20 years, before retiring in the early 1990’s.
In addition to his wife, Elyse, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Charyl and Robert Edmond of Downey, CA.; two granddaughters, Nicole and Natalie Edmond, both of Downey; brothers, Boyd Hetland of Williams, Vernon and wife, Sandy Hetland of Webster City and Adrian Hetland of Ellsworth. Mr. Hetland was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister, both in infancy.

Dr. Warren E. Laneville
Dr. Warren E. Laneville, 82, Iowa Falls, passed away at his winter home in Sebring, Fla. Funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Iowa Falls, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery in Webster City. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Linn’s Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, with the family present from 2-4 p.m.

Viola “Birdie” Berven
Viola “Birdie” Berven, 87, of Webster City, died Thursday, March 18, 2004 at the Hamilton Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Revs. John Grebner and Doug Tiffany officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery . Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Foster Funeral Home and and prior to services Tuesday at the church.
Viola Smith, daughter of Lucas and Bina Klaver was born on July 31, 1916 at Kamrar. She graduated from Kamrar High School in 1933. On June 6, 1936, she married Lyle George Berven at Tarkio, Mo. The couple operated a grocery store at Kamrar. In 1949, the couple started farming south of Kamrar on the Berven family farm. They moved to Webster City in 2001. Mrs. Berven was employed as a proof reader at Hahne Printing for many years before her retirement. Mr. Berven died Dec. 20, 2003.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Kolleen Berven of Webster City; daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Joe Slauson of Alden; grandchildren, Roy and Gus Berven, Kyle Kain, Jennifer Holden, Jeannine Kuiper, Julie Gordon and Jon Slauson; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Baker of Ellsworth and Arlene McCoy of St. George, Utah.
In addition to her husband, Lyle, she was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, George, Anson, Eugene, Warren and Clifford Smith; sisters, Bina Havens, Martha Smith, Ruth Gordon, Lila Smith, Ester Duit, Ferne Armour and Lucille Walker.
Birdie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and was active in the ladies church Circles.

Blanche Johnson
Blanche Johnson, 91, Story City, died March 19, 2004 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. Burial will be in the Story City Cemetery.
Blanche Orvella (Hanson) Johnson was born Dec. 2, 1912, south of Stratford to David and Bertha (Enderson) Hanson. She married Leslie S. Johnson on Oct. 12, 1932 at her parents home. To this union, three sons were born. Blanche was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and Immanuel Lutheran Church. She will be remembered by her friends and family for her acts of kindness. She spent 3 1/2 years at Stratford Rehabilitation and Care Center in Stratford.
She is survived by three sons, Marvin and wife Mary Jo of Stratford; Darrell and wife Linda of Omaha, Neb., and Rodney and wife Judy of Cedar falls; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; three sisters, Gladys Williams of Jewell, Irene Alvestad of Gladbrook, and Illa Mae Barrington of Muscatine; a brother, Donald Hanson of Roland.
Blanche was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Aug. 4, 1992,; and three sisters, Elaine Olson, Betty Jane Tegland and Bernice Hove.
Visitation will be Monday after 3 p.m. with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Soderstrum-Larson Funeral Home in Story City.

Ruth M. Paschal
Ruth M. Paschal, 95, of Webster City, died Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at Crestview Manor. Memorial Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at the
Foster Funeral Home with Rev. Howard Hunt to officiate. Burial will be at a later date at Bedford, Iowa. There will be no visitation.
Ruth Maxine Williams, daughter of James E. and Alice Fisk Williams was born November 25, 1908 at Emmetsburg. She received her education from the Mason City Community Schools. Ruth graduated from the University of Iowa in 1931, with a Bachelors Degree in elementary education. On June 22, 1931, she married Dr. George Albert Paschal. The couple moved to Hamilton county in 1932, when Dr. Paschal began practicing medicine at Stratford. They lived in Williams for nine years before moving to Webster City in 1946. Ruth’s main vocation was as a homemaker. She had worked as a receptionist at Dr. Paschal’s office during the later years of his practice. Dr. Paschal died on December 18, 1984. Ruth had resided at Crestview since May of 2001.
Mrs. Paschal is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Bill Wahlers of Apache Junction, AZ.; daughter-in-law, Donna Paschal of Rochester, MN.; grandchildren, Matt Paschal of Rochester, MN., Philip Paschal of Oro Valley, AZ., David and wife, Sue Wahlers of Gilbert, AZ., Diana and husband Bill Howes of Globe, AZ., Jim Wahlers of Mesa, AZ.; six great grandchildren and one sister, Jane Davidson of Clarion.
In addition to her husband, George, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Ann Paschal; son, George Paschal and her parents.
Mrs. Paschal was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, where she was active in several church circles. She was a former Iowa State P.E.O. President in 1964 and was also active with Chapter E.L.P.E.O. of Webster City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Congregational UCC at 1000 Willson Avenue, Webster City, Iowa 50595.

Rev. Floyd Fonken
Rev. Floyd Fonken, 86, Fort Dodge, died March 20, 2004 at Tompkins Memorial Health Center. Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church of Kamrar with Rev. John Wilson officiating. Interment is in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery . Arrangements were entrusted to Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred; daughter Barbara Fonken of Fort Dodge, an aunt Norma Van Langen, Alden; sisters-in-law, Doris Fonken, Kamrar, and Shirley Engstrom, Gowrie; and a brother-in-law, Dick Woodall, Kamrar. He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant children, his brothers, Lester Fonken and Lee Fonken, and his sister, Linda Woodall.
Lloyd John Fonken, son of Conrad and Etta Hassbrock Fonken, was born March 4, 1918 in Kamrar. He graduated from Kamrar High School in 1935, the University of Dubuque in 1940, and the Dubuque Theological Seminary in 1943. On May 26, 1942, he married Mildred Adele Sinning at Kamrar. They held pastorates in Illinois, Iowa, Oklahoma, Missouri and Nebraska, and he served as Associate Superintendent of the Presbyterian Home for Children in Farmington, Mo. They retired in May, 1983, while at Presbyterian Churches in Pawnee City and Humboldt, Neb. Upon retirement, they moved to Rogers, Ark. and they served the Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church in Farmington, Ark. Lloyd was a member of the Lions and Kiwanis Clubs.
