Dean Johnson, 64, Hawaii

Dean Johnson, 64, formerly of Fort Dodge, passed away on Monday, May 22, 2006, at Kona Community Hospital in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, following a brief illness.

Dean is survived by his wife Roma Johnson of Kailua-Kona (formerly Roma Jane Lee of Webster City); son Joel (Ayumi) of Kailua-Kona, son Matt (Sarah) Johnson of Fort Dodge, son Chris (special friend Vicki Fini) of Kailua-Kona; five grandchildren; his mother; and two sisters of Palm Desert, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Carter Johnson of Webster City, father, Joseph Johnson of Webster City, and grandparents.

Dean was born on June 22, 1941, in Webster City, Iowa. He graduated from Webster City High School, and from the University of Iowa with a BA degree in sociology. He worked as a city planner for Stanley Consultants in Muscatine and later moved to Fort Dodge to join his father and brother in the family farming operaton (Johnson Brothers Farms).

In 1998, Dean and Roma moved to Hawaii, where Dean worked as a general contractor (Johnson Enterprises) and started a small coffee farm (Johnson House Coffee). At the time of his death, Dean was an active member of the Kona Elks Club and served as chaplain.

On Thursday, May 25, the family will scatter Dean’s ashes in the Pacific Ocean, with a Celebration of Life to follow at the Johnson family home in Kona.

The family requests that memorials be left to the Kona Elks Building Fund.

Gilbert J. Griffin, 79, Webster City

Gilbert J. Griffin, 79, of Webster City died Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at the Trinity Regional Medical Center at Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m.

Friday at the Foster Chapel, with Rev. Michael Willers officiating. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post # 191. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral

and Cremation Center from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday and prior to the service on Friday.

Gilbert J. Griffin, son of Gilbert and Violet Hutchinson Griffin, was born June 16, 1926 at Webster City. He received his education at Mount Ayr. He joined the U.S.

Navy and served mainly in the Pacific Theatre for 4 years. He then joined the U.S. Air Force and served at bases throughout the world for over 20 years. He was a veteran of W.W. II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He moved to Webster City in August of 1967 following his retirement.

Gilbert is survived by his wife, Doris, daughters and son-in-law, June and Sam Caulley of Blackwood, NJ; Susan Holder of Webster City; sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Masako Griffin of Concord, CA; Kenneth and Susan Griffin of Lewis, IA; Michael and Vickie Griffin of Webster City; Alan (Tony) and Barbara Griffin of Fort Dodge; Scott and Paula Griffin of Blairsburg; Terrence Griffin of Webster City; 22 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; brother, Donald Griffin of Tucson, AZ; sister, Lola Surls of Fort Dodge; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Kenneth Holder; brother, Jack Griffin.

He was baptized in the Methodist faith and was a member of the American Legion Post # 191 of Webster City.

Diane Golden, 59, Ames

Diane Golden, age 59, of Ames, died Saturday, May 20, 2006 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 25, 2006 at Becker Funeral Home in Jewell. Friends may call Thursday morning one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.

Claude Abramson, 89, Jewell

Claude Abramson, age 89, of Jewell, died Sunday, May 21, 2006 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services are 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2006 at the United Church of Christ in Jewell. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Becker Funeral Home in Jewell.

Gladys Chapman, 86, Webster City

Gladys Chapman, 86, of Webster City, died Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at the Hamilton Hospital. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Rev. Scott Boone presiding. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery . Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center with a vigil service to be held at 6:00 p.m.

Gladys Margaret Chapman, daughter of Arthur and Mary Gleason Chapman was born May 1, 1920 at Blairsburg, Iowa. She attended rural school north of Blairsburg and graduated from Blairsburg High School in 1938. She received her B.A. in Education from Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls and a Master of Arts Degree in Administration from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. She continued her post graduate work at the University of Hawaii, University of Boulder, University of Northern Iowa and Concordia College. Ms. Chapman retired in May of 1985 following 45 years as a classroom teacher and elementary administrator. She was a member of the Webster City faculty for 39 years. She touched the hearts and minds of many young people in Webster City.

Ms. Chapman was involved in several organizations including Delta Kappa Gamma, American Association of University Women, Webster City Women’s Club, Beta Sigma Phi, Hospital Auxiliary, Catholic Daughters of America and life member of the National and State Education Association. She served as president at one time or another in most of the organizations.

Ms. Chapman is survived by her sister, Iva Flaherty of Fort Dodge; sister-in-law, Marge (Chapman) Roelfs and her husband, Walter of Mason City; brother-in-law, Owen Barry of Harlan; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Carleton A. Chapman; and sister, Mildred Barry; brother-in-law, Hugh C. Flaherty.

Ms. Chapman was a member of the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Webster City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Thomas Catholic School or Webster City Community Schools.

Sam Koehnk, 28, Jewell

Sam Koehnk, age 28, passed away Thursday, February 1, 2007 at his home in Jewell after a courageous battle with cancer. Memorial services are 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell. Visitation is Saturday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell. Memorials may be given to the Holden Cancer Center at the University of Iowa, Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell, or a Scholarship Fund at South Hamilton School.

Samuel Wayne Koehnk was born in Ames on August 10, 1978 to Larry Dean and Kristine Marie (Simington) Koehnk. Sam attended South Hamilton Schools in Jewell where in high school he received many academic and athletic honors in basketball, track, and football. He continued his education at Waldorf Junior College in Forest City where he played basketball. Upon graduation at Waldorf, Sam transferred to the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. On July 16, 2005 Sam married Anna Donae Lemmenes in Cedar Falls. Sam and Anna moved to Jewell in 2005 where he joined his father and brother at Arko Laboratory, Ltd. as a marketing and sales representative. He was a life long member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell where he was baptized and confirmed. Sam enjoyed spending summers at Lake Okoboji with family and friends. Activities he enjoyed were boating, water skiing, snow skiing, playing basketball, and golfing. Sam was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan.

Sam is survived by his wife, Anna; parents, Larry and Kris Koehnk, brother, Hans (Darci) Koehnk; and nephew, Tyler all of Jewell; his sister, Kathryn (Rob) Fisher of Kansas City; father and mother-in-law, Jim and Kim Lemmenes of Roseland, Minnesota; and brother-in-law, Andrew (Katy Hill) Lemmenes of Iowa City.

Colleen M. Brower, 68, Webster City

Colleen M. Brower, 68, of Webster City, died Friday February 2, 2007 at the Bethany Manor Care Center in Story City. Mrs. Brower chose to be cremated and no services will be held at this time. Serving the family is the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center.

Elton “E.O.” Brill, 90, Kamrar

Elton “E. O.” Brill, 90, of Kamrar, died Sunday, February 4, 2007 at the Mary Greeley Medical Center at Ames. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the Faith United Methodist Church at Webster City, with Revs. Michael Willer and Todd Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery at Webster City. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and after 9:30 a.m. at the church.

Elton Orville Brill, son of Harry and Flora (Cormaney) Brill, was born August 24, 1916, at Kamrar. He received his education in the Kamrar Public School, graduating in 1934. He started working at Brill’s Grill, his father’s restaurant at Kamrar. He then started the Kamrar Mercantile.

On October 9, 1942, he married Hannah Ethel Hauge at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, southeast of Stanhope. The couple resided at Kamrar. From 1942 to 1945, he served with the U.S. Army – Medical Corps at Springfield, MO. He worked in the medical lab at O’Reilly General Hospital. Following his discharge, he returned to Kamrar and started

Brill’s Feed and Seed Company, he also served as the postmaster of Kamrar for 30 years. He was a certified commercial seed cleaner and had interests in farming at Kamrar, Belmond and Williams areas. It was difficult to know when Elton retired.

Elton is survived by his wife, Ethel; daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne and Larry Slauson of Belle Plaine, IA; Kristine and Leo Asaro of St. Louis, MO; grandchildren, Travis Slauson of St. Louis; Crystal and Rich Loy of Cedar Rapids; Alexandra and Vanessa Asaro, both of St. Louis; cousin, Ina Cormaney of Webster City; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Charlotte Baumann.

He was the charter president of the Kamrar Lions Club and helped spearhead the construction of the Lions Community building at Kamrar. He also helped bring a successful weekly Bingo to the Kamrar community. He was a Northrup/King seed dealer for several years. He planted blue grass along many of Iowa’s state highways. He enjoyed traveling, was the oldest resident of Kamrar and placed much importance on making Kamrar a part of his life.

James Robert Smith, 83, Williams

James Robert Smith, age 83, of Williams, died on Saturday, February 3, 2007 at his home. Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 16th, 2007 at the United Methodist Church in Williams. Surls Funeral Home of Williams is in charge of arrangements.

James Robert Smith was born January 21, 1924 at 205 2nd St. Williams, Iowa the son of George and Lillian (Sheldon) Smith. He received his education in the locals schools and graduated from Williams High School with the class of 1942. He was a life long area resident of Williams where he owned and operated Smith Radio and T.V. He was affiliated with the Methodist Church in Williams.

He is survived by cousins, Violet Bode of Nicollet, MN., Barbara Glynn and husband, Ronald of Vernon Center, MN., Roy Anderson, Jr. of Fairbault, MN., Judy Englehart of Nicollet, MN., Greg Kruse of Iowa City, IA., Wilma Adamson and her husband, Harold of Greenfield, IA., Judy Lents and her husband, Larry of Dexter, IA. and Sharon Daut and her husband, Bob of Greenfield, IA.; many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jeanne Snyder Bilyeu, Algona

Jeanne Snyder Bilyeu, Algona, died Feb. 3, 2007 at her daughter’s home in Springfield, Mo. She was the daughter of Mrs. Metta Snyder of Eagle Grove. She leaves a daughter, Traci Ellis, two sons, David Bilyeu and Doug Bilyeu; five grandchildren; a sister, Elaine Elkin of Webster City; and a brother, Harry Snyder of Granger. The funeral will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Algona on Friday.

Maris Naber, 66, Boone
Maris Naber, 66, of Boone, died Wednesday, February 2, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Memorial services are 1 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Ellsworth with Rev. Dana Williams to officiate. A memorial fund has been established, gifts may be sent to the family. Becker Funeral Home in Jewell has been entrusted with arrangements.

Rosaline Jorgensen, 84, Iowa Falls
Rosaline Jorgensen, 84, of Iowa Falls, died Tuesday, February 1, 2005, at the Mercy Medical Center at Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Evangelical Free Church at Iowa Falls, with Pastor Mike Pitkin officiating. Burial will be in the Liberty Center Township Cemetery , south of Blairsburg. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center at Webster City from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday and prior to the service at the church.

Charlotte Ann Gilday Follett, 86, of Webster City, died Tuesday February 1, 2005 at her residence. Services will be held at a later date according to her wishes.
