Harold Bowers

BETTENDORF -- Services for Harold E. Bowers, Tulsa, Okla., formerly of Bettendorf, will be 1 p.m. Monday at Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary. Mr. Bowers died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at St. John's Hospital, Tulsa. He retired in 1972 as a rural route carrier after 30 years with the U.S. Postal Service in Bettendorf. He was born Jan. 22, 1912, in Rock Island. He married Ima Hargis in 1978 in Davenport. During World War II, he served in the Army. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society. Survivors include his wife; stepdaughters, Virginia Higgs, Heber Springs, Ark., and Linda Jones, Tulsa; stepsons, Buck Hargis, Davenport, and Denny Hargis, Pargould, Ark.; a granddaughter; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Kyle, Davenport.

Al Staley

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. -- Albert Charles "Al" Staley Jr., Hendersonville, beloved husband and father, died Friday, March 10, 2000, at Laurels of Hendersonville after a very long time of ill health. Mr. Staley was a former resident of Davenport. While there, he was sales manager at National Tube Division of U.S. Steel office in Bettendorf. He was employed 30 years in sales at the company. Al was a native of Knoxville, Pa., and was a son of the late Albert Charles Staley Sr. and Verne Bonshire Staley. He had made his home in Hendersonville since 1981. As a pre-schooler, the Staley family moved to Dormont, Pa., where Al went through the school system and earn a scholarship to University Preparatory School. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Al joined the Army Air Corps. He was sent to Coral Gables, Fla., where he entered cadet school. He was graduated as a navigator and was sent to several training areas. He was assigned to the Army Air Corps Base at Alamogorda, N.M., where he married Lucy Anne Isham at the base chapel. After peace was declared, Al returned to Pittsburgh, where he finished his education at the University of Pittsburgh in 1948. Al was noted for his quick wit and his good nature. He has left many friends across the country who will miss him and his gentle humor. A memorial service will be later. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Elizabeth House, in care of Four Seasons Hospice, P.O. Box 2395, Hendersonville, N.C., 28793, or First Presbyterian Church, 699 N. Grove St., Hendersonville, N.C., 28792. Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors and Cremation Memorial Center, Hendersonville, is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lucy Anne Isham Staley; sons, Craig Staley, and his wife, Deborah Colter Staley, Greenville, and Brad Patrick Staley, Boca Raton, Fla.; daughters, attorney Valerie Verne Staley and Daphne Diane Staley, both of Puyallup, Wash.; sisters, Lorine Staley House and Villa Staley Houghton, both of Dayton, Ohio, and Miriam Staley Epstein, New York City; and several nieces and nephews.

Gladys Schwieger

DAVENPORT -- Services for Gladys O. Schwieger, a resident of Middletown, Mo., formerly of Davenport, will be 10 a.m. Monday at McGinnis, Chamber & Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is 2-6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. She died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at her home. Gladys was employed as office manager at Roger Schmidt Co., Davenport, for 30 years. She retired in 1977. Before that, she was office manager at the former Davenport Tent & Awning Co. for many years. She was born May 12, 1914, in Burlington, Iowa, to Walter H. and Mabel (Hissong) Schwieger. Gladys was the oldest living member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church and faithfully served the church for many years. She had been a Sunday school teacher, choir director, helped with a variety of youth programs and volunteered in many ways as well. In addition, she was a member of Royal Neighbors of America-Camp 1292, Opportunity Circle and King's Daughters. Memorials may be made to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Davenport. Survivors include brothers and sisters-in-law, Lloyd and Dorothy Schwieger, Middletown, Robert and Louise Kress, Davenport, and John and Genevieve Kress, Spring Hill, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by sisters, Marie Bloomquist and Dorothy Bailey; and brothers, Harold Schwieger, Don Schwieger and Harold Kress.

William McDonnell Jr.

DAVENPORT -- Services for William J. McDonnell Jr., Davenport, will be 2 p.m. Monday at Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Mr. McDonnell died unexpectedly Thursday, March 9, 2000, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. He had worked at Oscar Mayer Foods Corp., Davenport. He was born Nov. 13, 1935, in Clinton County, Iowa, to William J. Sr. and Helen (Costello) McDonnell. He married Irene Snodgrass on March 26, 1955, in Maquoketa, Iowa. He enjoyed trucks and birds Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include his wife; children and spouses, Connie and Michael Williams, Plainfield, Ill., Brenda and Martin Townsend, Davenport, Rose McDonnell, Davenport, Joy McDonnell, Franklin, Ill., Tami McDonnell and Robert Huff, Davenport, and William J. McDonnell III, Davenport;11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Grace McLain, of Arizona, and Joan Rose, Moline; and a brother, Herbert McDonnell, Moline. He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis McDonnell, in 1986; and a daughter-in-law, Dawn McDonnell, in 1999.

Ardelle Maury

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Ardelle A. Maury, Lakeland, formerly of Bettendorf, died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at her home. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sandpiper Club House, Lakeland. Gentry-Morrison Funeral Home Northside, Lakeland, is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Maury was an oral surgical assistant for Drs. Finn and Wilkinson in Davenport. Ardelle Hird was born Aug. 13, 1932, in Iowa City. She married LaVerne Maury. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice. Survivors include her husband, LaVerne; a daughter, Teresa Stotlar, Bettendorf; sons, Steven, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Jeffrey, Sioux City, Iowa; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; stepsisters, Susan Hird, Dubuque, Iowa, and Mary Timbs, Iowa City; her mother, Sally Pauly, Dubuque; and brothers, Gerald Hird, Dubuque, Ambrose Hird, Mesquite, Nev., and Gary Hird, Wichita, Kan.

James Knobloch

EAST MOLINE -- Our beloved Father, James B. Knobloch, East Moline, died Sunday June 4, 2000, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline, with very special family members at his side. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery , East Moline. Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, with a rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. He worked in the family business and inherited Knobloch Poultry Market in downtown East Moline in 1966 after his father passed away. In 1968, he started a new chapter of his life, driving a truck for Rock Island Poultry and Davenport Produce Co. before retiring in 1986. He was born March 26, 1924, in East Moline, to Joseph and May (Nobbe) Knobloch. He married the love of his life, Dorothy Bachman, on Aug. 19, 1947, at St. John's Catholic Church, Rapids City, Ill. She died Oct. 27, 1990. He graduated from United Township High School in 1942 and served in the Army Air Force during World War II. During his retirement, he enjoyed the stock market, crossword puzzles and St. Anne Parish. He was an avid Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bears fan, logging many hours in front of the TV watching these teams. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, St. Anne Parish. In his younger years, Mr. Knobloch enjoyed tennis, playing kickball with the neighborhood children and later spending time with his wife and two children. Memorials may be made to Monsignor William J. Cleary Endowment Fund. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Kaye and Wil Sandoval, both employed by the Colorado School System; a son, Michael J. Knobloch, East Moline, who is an Illinois state engineer; his mother, May Knobloch, East Moline; brothers, Robert and Ralph, both of East Moline; a sister, Kathryn, Tucson, Ariz.; grandchildren, Cereescia and Jameson; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Jeanne, Ann and Morris; and many special nieces and nephews.

Sally Bashaw

DAVENPORT -- Memorial services for Sally JoAnn Bashaw, Casa Grande, Ariz., will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Davenport. Burial will be Thursday in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Sally died Friday, May 26, 2000, in Casa Grande. She was a homemaker. Sally Swartz was born Dec. 16, 1929, in Davenport, to Kenneth E. Sr. and Dorothy L. (Chockley) Swartz. She married Marvin L. Bashaw on July 24, 1948, in Kansas City, Mo. Sally graduated in 1947 in Davenport High School. She formerly was active at Luther Manor and Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed showing pugs at AKC dog shows, finishing with two champions. Sally also was a volunteer fund-raiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Association. She was a former member of the Altar Guild at St. James Lutheran Church, Bettendorf. Memorials may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Foundation of America, 8776 E. Shea Blvd., Box 490, Scottsdale, Ariz., 85260, or RTA Hospice Foundation, 177 W. Cottonwood Lane, Suite 10, Casa Grande, Ariz., 85222. Survivors include her husband, Marvin; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca S. and Ted Berenyi, Davenport; daughter, Pamela S. Smith, Davenport; son and daughter-in-law, Timothy D. and Karen Bashaw, Bettendorf; son, Douglas B. Bashaw, Naples, Fla.; grandchildren, Scott Canfield, Thomas King, Amy Canfield and Gregory Farber; great-grandchildren, Catherine and Alexis King; and brother, Kenneth E. Swartz Jr., Davenport.

Arline Kenney

MOLINE -- Private funeral services for Arline M. Kenney, Moline, will be Wednesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Mrs. Kenney died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline. Arline worked at Fannie May Candy, Moline, until 1972 when she and her soon-to-be husband founded Kenney's Pest Control, Moline. They owned and operated the company until 1983 when the two of them retired and sold the business to their son, Richard Rohm, who still owns the family business. Arline Johnson was born March 11, 1922, in Cambridge, Ill., to Oscar and Alma (Gustafson) Johnson. She married James E. Kenney on Aug. 4, 1973, in Moline. He died May 2, 1991. Memorials may be made to Les Turner ALS Foundation, 8142 N. Lawndale Ave., Skokie, Ill., 60076-3322. Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Manhard, Denver; a son, Richard Rohm, Moline; stepchildren, James Kenney Jr., Colona, Ill., and Cathy Minteer, Rock Island; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Ann Mart

BETTENDORF -- Ann Rene Mart, passed away Thursday, June 1, 2000, in Bettendorf. Ann was born April 22, 1961, to Patsy and Albert Mart. She is sister to Kellene, Kae, Eric, Jeanne, David and Mollie, and aunt of Kylie and Alexandria. Ann lived the deeper questions of life and recognized the spiritual being that she was on this human path. She enjoyed friendship with those from many places and walks of life. She revered nature and loved the outdoors. Her creative, loving and spirited soul will be missed by many. Visitation will be 5:30-7 p.m. today at McGinnis, Chambers & Sass Funeral Home, Bettendorf, where memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorials may be made to the family.

Dave Wehrley

DAVENPORT -- Mr. David R. Wehrley, Davenport, passed away Friday, June 2, 2000, in Davenport. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Heritage Wesleyan Church, 4801 44th St., Rock Island. Burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. Visitation is 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. today at Runge Mortuary. Memorials may be made to the family. Mr. Wehrley was born May 27, 1958, in Milwaukee, Wis., the son of John and Lois (Laird) Wehrley. He married Jude Kelley on Aug. 3, 1985, in Davenport. Dave graduated from Nathan Hale High School, West Allis, Wis., in 1976. He went on to graduate with his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in December 1980. He then went on to earn his master of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1989. He was a registered professional engineer in the state of Iowa since 1987. Dave was project engineer for his 19-year career with the Rock Island District of the Corps of Engineers, where he was selected Engineer of the Year in 1997. Dave was promoted to supervisory civil engineer, Cost Engineering Branch, Engineering Division, in October 1998. He was a member of Toastmasters International, Promise Keepers International, American Society of Civil Engineers and Society of American Military Engineers. Dave enjoyed many hobbies, including running, walking, biking, roller blading, snow skiing and fishing, as well as many other activities. Dave and his family have been members of Heritage Wesleyan Church since 1992. Dave was a devout Christian with a strong faith in Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. Survivors include his wife, Jude; children, Jennifer and Michael; his parents, John and Lois Wehrley; brothers, Gary and Jim Wehrley; and his grandmother, Eileen Laird. A number of aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
