Robert Ulysses Grant

Robert Ulysses Grant, 84, of Burlington, died at 12:25 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at Great River Medical Center ICU in West Burlington.

Born June 2, 1920, in Burlington, he was the son of Frederick Jessie and Daisey Ann Doty Grant. On Nov. 5, 1939, he married Marie Elizabeth Eberle in Burlington.

Mr. Grant worked for ADM (Archer Daniels Midland Elevator) for 32 years, Midwest Biscuit for five years and was a farmer.

He was a member of Eagles, was the youngest officer of the Moose to be elected at the age of 20, First Baptist Church, he loved gardening especially roses and raised many varieties of roses, loved birds, bowling and was a die hard Cubs fan. In his younger years he played guitar and would sing his daughters to sleep at night.

Survivors include his wife Marie of Burlington; one daughter, Jo Ann (Brendan) Markey of Burlington; five grandchildren, Tracey (Dan) Sharp of Norwalk, Iowa, Julie (Sam) Miller of Bloomfield, Iowa, Rachelle Markey of Excelsior, Minnesota, Erin (Jay) Matushak of Crystal, Minnesota, Colin Markey of Chicago, Illinois; four great–grandchildren, Jordan Sharp of Norwalk, Iowa, Justyn Sharp of Norwalk, Iowa, Ally Miller of Bloomfield, Iowa, and Sammy Miller of Bloomfield, Iowa; four sisters, Mildred Foster of Burlington, Iowa, Virginia Gugeler of Burlington, Iowa, Norma Mordhurst of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Patricia Roberts of Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, James Grant and "Skippy" Richard Grant, one sister, Marian Hellenthal, and one daughter, Linda Fletcher.

Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at Prugh's Chapel with the family receiving friends Sunday evening from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Grant will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Prugh's Chapel, with the Rev. Tyrone Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for First Baptist Church.

Betty Gustafson

Betty M. Gustafson, 70, of Batavia, died at 8:15 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Born Aug. 23, 1928, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Hartzell Coleman and Myrtle Wamsley Popejoy. She married Lawrence Edwin Gustafson on Aug. 22, 1970, in Fairfield.
Mrs. Gustafson was raised and educated in Fairfield and was a 1946 graduate of Fairfield High School. She worked at the Fairfield Line, Inc. for 47 years, retiring in 1993.

She lived in Batavia since 1977. She was a member of First Christian Church of Fairfield, Jefferson County Hospital Auxiliary and the American Diabetic Association. She enjoyed needlework, reading and, most of all, her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband; two stepdaughters, Linda Gustafson of West Des Moines and Kathy Praski of Indianola; four stepsons, Joel of Batavia, Jerry of Eldon, James of Des Moines and John of Ventura, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Margie Birmingham of Coal Valley, Ill., and Edith Wright of Moline, Ill.; and one brother, Glenn Wamsley of Burlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield.

The funeral for Mrs. Gustafson will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jerry Caughron officiating. Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the American Diabetes Association.

Darrin Cale

Darrin E. Cale, 17, of Canton, Mo., died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001.

Born Nov. 22, 1983, in Burlington, he was the son of Joseph Eugene Cale and Robin Denise Keller.
Mr. Cale was a senior at Canton High School and a member of Canton Christian Church.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Joseph Eugene and Cindy of Lomax, Ill.; his mother and stepfather, Robin and Kenny Keller of Canton, Mo.; his grandparents, Wayne and Joyce Coin of Milan, Mo., Kenneth Cale of Riverbank, Calif., Carol Blodgett of Burlington and Carolyn Keller of Wayland, Mo.; his great-grandmother, Clara Fern Pierson of Pollock, Mo.; one brother, Todd Cale of Lomax, Ill.; one sister, Sharon Cale of Canton, Mo.; one stepbrother, Jesse Keller of Revere, Mo.; two half-sisters, Misty Cale and Iva Cale, both of Lomax, Ill.; one stepsister, Laura Keller of Quincy, Ill.; and one niece.

He was preceded in death by grandparents and great-grandparents.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Canton Christian Church.

The funeral for Mr. Cale will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Ron McNeill officiating. Burial will be in Forest Grove Cemetery in Canton.

A memorial has been established for the Darrin Cale Memorial Fund.

Davis Funeral Home in Canton is in charge of arrangements.

Karen Peterson

Karen Louise Peterson, 56, of Burlington, died at 3:20 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, in Burlington.

Born Oct. 14, 1944, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Lyle Haskell and Gladis Faye Arnold Perkins.
Mrs. Peterson was a homemaker.

She was of the Baptist faith and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Burlington Gym, local dart leagues and Catfish Bend Players Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Karla Tarwater and Glenda Freeman, both of Burlington; two sons, Lyle Polson and Brad Lucas, both of Burlington; two brothers, Richard Perkins of Burlington and Dean Perkins of Phoenix, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and her fiancŽ, William "Willie" Donaldson of Burlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Her body has been cremated.

Visitation will begin at noon Sunday in Prugh's Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

The memorial service for Mrs. Peterson will be at 8 p.m. Sunday in Prugh's Chapel, with the Rev. William Hornback officiating.

A memorial has been established.

Mildred Mesecher

Mildred Mesecher, 87, of Terre Haute, Ill., died at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst, Ill.

Born June 20, 1916, in Terre Haute, she was the daughter of Arthur and Mary Strand Olson. On March 30, 1937, she married Ross C. Mesecher. They later divorced.

Mrs. Mesecher was a graduate of Terre Haute High School.

She had worked at the Lomax Canning Factory, was a cook, drove the school bus for Terre Haute High School, and later was head cook at LaHarpe High School for 20 years.

She was a member of the Terre Haute United Methodist Church.

She loved to cook, needlework and travel with her family.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Lou Housh of Mount Pleasant; two sons, Ross Mesecher of Stronghurst and Art Mesecher of Carman, Ill.; three grandchildren; and four great–grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Mesecher will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Steven Blair officiating. Burial will be in Terre Haute Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center and the Terre Haute United Methodist Church.

Lloyd Downey

Lloyd Harper Downey, 93, of Mount Pleasant, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at his home.

Born Dec. 27, 1909, in Fayette, Mo., he was the son of John and Rena Johnson Downey. He married Shirley Craig who preceded him in death many years ago. On June 19, 1997, he married Mary Young in Mount Pleasant.

He went to school in the Fayette area and worked on the family farm.

As a young man, he moved to the Mount Pleasant area in order to work at the Army Ammunition Plant. During World War II, he served in the United States Army as a cook in Belgium. When he was discharged from the Army, he returned to the Ammunition Plant.

Mr. Downing attended a heating and cooling school in Chicago and retired using his trade several years later. He also worked for Wing's Bakery applying the skills he had learned when he was in the Army.

He was an avid gardener and loved reading and animals, and was especially fond of dogs and a pet pony. He grew up in the Baptist faith, had been an American Legion member, and was an active contributor to the Paralyzed Veterans Association.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, John Downey of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Robert Downey of Junction City, Kan., and Jeff Downey of Mount Pleasant; one daughter, JoRena Lunde of Badger, Minn.; two brothers, his twin brother, Lawrence Downey of Mount Pleasant, and John Richard Downey of New London; and two sisters, Eva Lewis of Sedalia, Mo., and Winona Howard of Euless, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and two great–grandchildren.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one son in infancy, and two sisters.

Visitation will begin after noon today at the Olson–Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Downing will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Olson–Powell Memorial Chapel. Burial, with full military rites by VFW Post No. 2561, American Legion Post No. 58 and AMVETS Post No. 44, will follow in the Burge Cemetery of New London.

Memorials have been established for Crossroads Hospice of Southeast Iowa and the Paralyzed Veterans Association.

SAMUEL ROSS

Funeral Services for Mr. Samuel Ross, 52, of Rantoul, Ill., formerly of Burlington, will be held in the First United Methodist Church this morning at 11:00 A.M. Pastor Steve Perkins will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . A memorial has been established for the Burlington Little League and Rantoul Little League.

GENEVA E. HENTHORN

Funeral Services for Mrs. Geneva E. Henthorn, 83, of Burlington will be held in Prugh's Chapel this afternoon at 2:00 P.M. Pastor Maurice Moore will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . The family will receive friends in Prugh's Chapel one hour prior to the time of service. A memorial has been established in memory of Geneva E. Henthorn.

Patricia Strandberg

Patricia "Pat" Ryan Strandberg, 67, of Byesville, Ohio, formerly of Burlington, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Born Dec. 18, 1936, in Cambridge, Ohio, she was the daughter of Hobart "Bill" and Beatrice Williams Ryan.

Mrs. Strandberg was an employee of Champion Sparkplug where she worked for 36 years at both the Cambridge and Burlington plants. She was a 1954 graduate of Buffalo Valley Rural High School. She was a member of the Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Women of the Moose and Eagles in Burlington.

Survivors include one son, Mark Strandberg of Aurora, Ill.; one foster son, Steven Strandberg of DeMott, Ind.; one daughter, Jerry Lynn Lanning; one grandson; seven foster and step–grandchildren from Indiana and Illinois; one uncle, Isaiah Williams of Byesville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother and one brother.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Black Family Funeral Service in Byesville.

The funeral for Mrs. Strandberg will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Black Family Funeral Service with the Rev. Jack Lamneck officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery.

HARLEY C. SHERWOOD

Funeral Services for Mr. Harley C. Sherwood, 81, of Burlington will be held at the Oak Street Baptist Church this morning at 10:30 A.M. Pastor Maurice Moore and Pastor Brad Sherwood will officiate. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Morning Sun, Iowa. Memorials have been established for the Salvation Army, Burlington Humane Society and Sunnyside Baptist Church.
