Merle Noel

EAST MOLINE -- Services for Merle G. Noel, East Moline, will be 1 p.m. Friday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Burial will be in National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation is 11 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Noel died Friday, July 27, 2001, at Charity Hospital, New Orleans. She had worked as a nurse's aide in the Quad-City area. She enjoyed sewing, needlework and gardening. She also enjoyed Bible studies. Merle Managh was born Sept. 29, 1921, in New Zealand, to Sandy N. and Gladys F. (Pike) Managh. She married Verle J. Noel on Feb. 14, 1947, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. He died April 24, 1996. Memorials may be made to the Billy Graham Ministries. Survivors include daughters, Cheryl Geiken, Davenport, and Janice Desmand of New Zealand; a son, Graham Fletcher of New Zealand; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Nita Diprose and Nancy Roberts, both of New Zealand; and brothers, Bruce Managh, Donald Managh and Ian Managh, all of New Zealand. She was preceded in death by her husband; a grandson, Andrew Geiken; three sisters; and a brother.

Ember Metz

EAST MOLINE -- Services for Ember K. Metz, Rochester, Minn., formerly of Moline, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Mr. Metz died July 26, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester. He began work in 1943 at IBM and retired from there in 1979 as a senior parts analyst. He was born June 11, 1917, in Moline. He married Rowena Sands in Moline. Memorials may be made to Mayo Foundation for Cardiac Research. Survivors include his wife, Rowena; daughters, Patricia Pruden, LeClaire, Iowa, and Betsy Larson, St. Paul, Minn.; a son, Robert L., Spencer, Ind.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Inez Laurine.

Bruce Petty

MILAN, Ill. -- Services for Bruce R. Petty, of 1209 W. 5th St., will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milan, where he was a member. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery , Rock Island. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, with a rosary recited at 8 p.m. Bruce died Monday, July 30, 2001, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. His lifetime career was automobile sales. Mr. Petty was born July 20, 1928, in Kewanee, Ill., to Riley and Velma (Webster) Petty. He married Madelein D'Haeze on Aug. 24, 1946, in Kewanee. Bruce loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include his wife, Madelein; daughters and son-in-law, Connie and Ron Aust, Davenport, and Vickie and Jim Dolk, Silvis; a son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Sheila Petty, Colona; grandchildren, Tiffany and Adam Dolk, Bruce R. Petty II and Kimberlyn and Greg Aust; great-grandchildren, Samuel Dolk and Jessica, Brianna and David Aust; and a sister, Naida (Mrs. Robert) Vanden Dooren, Kewanee. His parents preceded him in death.

Pearl Barnes

PREEMPTION, Ill. -- Pearl E. Barnes, Preemption, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at her home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at her home, 1456 U.S. 67, Preemption. Burial will be in Preemption Cemetery . Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Thursday at her home. Trimble Funeral Home, Aledo, is in charge of arrangements. Miss Barnes taught school in Viola, New Boston, Matherville, Preemption, Berwick and Sherrard schools. She retired in 1965 from Sherrard schools. She and her sister, Leona, operated the Barnes Family Farm. She was born Feb. 12, 1900, at the family home in Preemption Township, Mercer County. Memorials may be made to the Pearl Barnes Memorial Fund. Survivors include a cousin, Jo Anne Barnes and her family of Preemption.

Christine Gentry

DAVENPORT -- Services for Christine Gentry, Hardy, Ark., formerly of Davenport, will be 10 a.m. Friday at Runge Mortuary. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Christine died Sunday, July 29, 2001, in Hardy, Ark. Christine was born Aug. 29, 1918, in Chapin, Ill. She was the daughter of Thomas and Ruth (Hutchison) Spires. She marred Ira Richard Gentry on Sept. 7, 1935, in Virginia, Ill. He died Feb. 28, 1983. She had been a dietitian at the former Mercy Hospital in Davenport. She was most recently a member of First Baptist Church, Hardy, Ark., where she was involved with the ladies Bible study, and a member of the Lioness Club. Memorials may be made to Arthritis Foundation. She is survived by sons, Bill, Hardy, Ark., Bob and Ralph, both of Bettendorf, Don, Cherokee Village, Ark., and Ray, and wife, Lori, Cherokee Village, Ark.; daughters, Clara, Mary and Ruth Gentry, all of Cherokee Village, Ark., and Wanda Leamon, Davenport; a daughter-in-law, Maureen Gentry, Bettendorf; brothers, Thurston, and wife, Dee Spires, Moline, and Eldon, and wife, Shirley Spires, Murryville, Ill.; sisters, Alice, and husband, Ray Findley, Rock Island, and Audrey Scholes, Jacksonville, Ill.; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sons, Jerry and Timmy; and a daughter, Kathie Gentry.

Thomas Vickroy

TAYLOR RIDGE, Ill. -- Thomas E. Vickroy, Taylor Ridge, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Esterdahl Mortuary Ltd., 1216 5th Ave., Moline. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery , East Moline. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Mr. Vickroy was employed as a certified small engine repairman and had worked in the roofing industry. He was born July 6, 1967, in Moline. Survivors include a son, Thomas Lerch, Illinois City; his parents, Theodore and Carol Vickroy; a sister, Lisa Gray, Moline; a half sister, Candi, Davenport; and a half brother, Theodore Vickroy Jr., serving in the Air Force.

William Vickroy

MOLINE -- William R. Vickroy, Moline, formerly of Port Byron, Ill., died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Illini Hospital, Silvis, Ill. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Countryside Christian Church, Port Byron. Burial will be in Zuma Township Cemetery . Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Mr. Vickroy worked until 1983 at Rock Island Arsenal. He was born Sept. 11, 1923, in Knoxville, Iowa. He married Lois Wells in 1946 in Wheatland, Iowa. During World War II, he served with the Navy as a petty officer 2nd class aboard the USS Chennango. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include his wife, Lois; daughters, Gail Horst, East Moline, Pamela Banowetz, Charlotte, Iowa, and Roschelle Wachter, Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Donald, East Moline; 10 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and brothers, Charles, Skokie, Ill., Roger, Sherrard, Ill., Lloyd, Crawford, Mo., Ted, Moline, and George, Rock Island.

Evelyn Beard

MOLINE -- Services for Evelyn B. Beard, Moline, will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at National Cemetery , Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation is 10-11 a.m. Friday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. Mrs. Beard died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at her home. She was employed 20 years as a bookkeeper at First National Bank of Moline. She retired in 1979. Evelyn Day was born May 22, 1917, in Charles City, Iowa. She married Harry Beard in 1936 in Mason City, Iowa. He died in 1997. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association. Survivors include a son, Edward, Chama, N.M.; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Carline Billick, Mason City.
