Rev. George H. Schermer, age 87, of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away on June 28, 2004 from complications of cancer. Services will be held at First Covenant Church, Moline, IL, on Thursday, July 1, 2004 at 11:00 AM with visitation preceding beginning at 9:30 AM at the church. Graveside services will be at 2:30 PM at Clover Chapel Cemetery, Woodhull, IL. Esterdahl Mortuary Ltd. will be in charge of arrangements. Rev. Schermer was the son of Henry and Ellen Schermer of Crookston, MN. He graduated from North Park College and Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL in 1941 and was ordained into the ministry in 1944. He earned his BA degree in Christian Education from Macalester College, St. Paul, MN, in 1962. His first pastorate was at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Kewanee, IL where he met and then married icon Maxine A. Nelson. Other Covenant Churches he served include New London, MN; Maywood near Foley, MN; Stromsburg, NE; Lanyon, IA; Ft. Dodge, IA; Aurora, NE; and Omaha, NE. He served as Youth Secretary for the Northwest (MN) Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church and as Assistant Youth Secretary for the denomination's Department of Christian Education, Chicago. Survivors include his wife, Maxine; two sons, Douglas (Shirley) of Wayland, IA; and Timothy (Martha) of Bettendorf, IA; one daughter, Kristine (Bruce) Metcalf of Hilmar, CA; eight grandchildren, Jason, Gavin, Garrick, Ian, and Ross Schermer, and Amy, Jeff, and Lisa Metcalf, and two great-grandchildren. The family would like to express its appreciation to the Oncology staff at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus, for their care, concern, and thoughtfulness. Memorials may be sent to North Park Seminary, Chicago; the Department of Christian Formation, Evangelical Covenant Church, Chicago; and Department of Christian Formation Northwest Covenant Conference, Minneapolis; First Covenant Church, Moline, or the American Cancer Society.

Ellis, Oscar William

Oscar William Ellis, Bettendorf, died at home on June 26th after a lengthy battle with a brain tumor. He was 55. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 Tuesday, June 29th at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd., 6601 – 38th Avenue, Moline. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 30th at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 417 Main Street, Davenport. Oscar Ellis will be cremated according to his wishes. Memorials may be made in memory of Oscar W. Ellis to the Putnam Museum IMAX Theatre, 1717 West 12th Street, Davenport, IA 52803. Ellis was President and CEO of RiverStone Group, Inc., formerly Moline Consumers Company. After graduating summa cum laude from the University of Arizona with a degree in mining engineering, Ellis received a Masters of Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley. There he met and married icon Anne K. Harvey. The couple had two daughters, Tealia and Crystal. In 1999 he married icon Anne Colville of West Des Moines, Iowa. After Berkeley, Ellis returned to the Quad Cities to join his family's aggregate business. He managed several mining interests in Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri before becoming President in 1987. A recognized leader and innovator in the aggregate industry, Ellis led RiverStone Group through the largest expansion of operations in company history. Ellis served on the board of directors of the National Stone Sand and Gravel Association, the Illinois Association of Aggregate Producers, and the Iowa Limestone Producers Association. Dedicated to community service, he also served on the boards of the Niabi Zoological Society, the Putnam Museum, and River Action Inc. He was a past member of the advisory board for Boys & Girls Club of the Mississippi Valley. Oscar Ellis was an avid outdoorsman – a hunter, angler, and diver whose lifelong commitment to conservation was echoed in his career and his hobbies. A serious and accomplished photographer, Ellis found beauty in the natural world and enthusiastically recorded it with his camera. He also appreciated simple pursuits such as walking in the woods on his farm in Milan, Illinois. Most important to him was being a caring husband, father, and friend. Oscar Ellis is survived by his wife Anne Colville, his daughters Tealia Ellis Ritter and her husband David Ritter and Crystal Ellis, his parents Jim and Wanda Ellis, his stepchildren Drew and Lucy Colville, his brothers and sisters and several nieces and nephews.

Genevieve Kathryn Draves was born icon June 27, 1922 in Fennimore, Wisconsin, the daughter of Irvin and Constance Draves. She married icon Jordan C. Dralle on July 18, 1947 in Nashua, IA. He preceded her in death on January 25, 1994. Ginger graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, Madison, Wisconsin in 1943 and was a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corp, serving in World War II. After raising her family, she returned to nursing in 1968. She was very active for many years in her church and will be remembered for her friendship and kindness. Survivors include her son, Jay C. Dralle of East Moline , a brother Dr. John I. Draves and his wife Cathy of Sun City West, Arizona and many nieces and nephews. A special thank you to the nurses and staff at Genesis West Medical Center for their tender care and compassion.

He organized bible studies for those affected by cancer. He enjoyed having breakfast dates with his sons once a week. He enjoyed talking with others, reading, journaling, playing tennis and chess with his sons, and golf. He wanted to be just like Jesus because Grant and Joseph wanted to be just like him. He always had a great attitude and his faith kept him positive and upbeat even during the hardest days of his courageous five year battle with cancer. Hazel was born icon March 16, 1924 in Rugby, ND to Kenneth and Agnes Tweet Jennings. She graduated from Rugby High School in 1941. At the beginning of WWII, Jean moved to the Quad Cities and worked in the medical records department of the Rock Island Arsenal. On June 18, 1943, Jean married icon James McMeekin in Sully, IA. He preceded her in death in 1977. Following the war, the couple owned and operated a printing company. In 1956 they moved to Wheatland, IA where they published a weekly newspaper. In 1968, Jean became a travel agent with DePorter-Butterworth Tours, Moline. In 1977 she became a partner in an upholstery shop, where she worked until her retirement. Jean was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Moline. She will be remembered as a kind and happy person, always positive and appreciative of all she had. Edwin was born icon on April 2, 1920 in Pekin, IL the son of Samuel and Nellie Hammer Gotheridge. He married icon Arlene Fenton on October 4, 1941 in Unionville, MO. Edwin was an owner-operator truck driver and later worked for Miller Container, retiring in 1982. He was a dealer trade driver for Lujack’s for 12 years, retiring in 1994. Edwin was a WWII era Army veteran and a member of the Durant American Legion Post #430. He was also a member of the Bethel Assembly of God Church in Rock Island. He and his wife used to take trips with the Hawkeye Ramblers Motorcycle Club. He loved horses, Harley Davidson motorcycles and his grandchildren. Jack R. Pierson, 71, of Sherrard, died Friday, August 6, 2004 at Genesis West Medical Center, Davenport. Graveside Services will be 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 14, 2004 at the Sherrard Cemetery. According to Jack’s wishes his body will be cremated. Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd. is assisiting the family. Jack was born icon April 14, 1933 in Cambridge, Ohio, the son of Edgar Axel and Dorothy Britton Pierson. He married icon Cassie Hubbard in November of 1955 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. She preceded him in death in October of 1983. He later married icon Treva (Johnson) Schroeder on August 4, 1984 in Sherrard. Jack was employed at John Deere Plow Planter as a welder, then he was employed at the Montgomery Elevator also a welder. He later worked at Case IH as a foreman. He returned to Montgomery Elevator then later to John Deere Plow Planter as a welder. Later, he was employed by Sherrard Unit #200 School District working in maintenance. He later was a grounds keeper at Rock Island Memorial Park retiring in April of 1998. Jack was a Army veteran serving from 1953-1955. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Sherrard and volunteered on the Sherrard Fire Department for 20 years. He was a former Sherrard Village Town board member. He was a member of the Moline UAW Local. He enjoyed camping and traveling. Mark attended Blackhawk College, Moline before attending the University of Illinois, Circle Campus, Chicago. He was employed as the restaurant manager at Five in Moline. He also worked in the hotel and food industry as a trainer for “Let Us Entertain You” in Chicago. Mark loved tennis, baseball, walking, reading, music, movies, shopping and running, where he completed his first marathon, The Chicago Marathon, in 2003. He also participated in the Bix 7, three different times. He volunteered his time in many Chicago hospitals and the Aids Foundation. Mark was known for his generosity, his abililty to listen to his friends and also as the social coordinator for his many friends. SURVIVORS Parents Brother Jeff Mendoza Raleigh, NC.
