Arthur Assmann

Funeral services for Arthur Joseph Assmann, 69, of Alta, were held Monday, August 28, 2000 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Storm Lake, with Rev. Msgr. Gerald J. Stessman officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery in Alta. Barker Funeral Home of Alta was in charge of arrangements.

Arthur was born icon October 26, 1930 at Earling, the son of Joseph Albert and Doloris Egan Assmann. He graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic High School in Dunlap. On November 10, 1952 he married icon Junella Langenfeld at Earling.

Arthur served in the Marine Corps from January 22, 1952 to January 21, 1954. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, playing cards and going to the casino. He was loved by all. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post #224 of Dunlap.

Arthur passed away on August 25, 2000 at Buena Vista County Hospital, Storm Lake. He is survived by his wife, June Assmann; seven children: Tim and Barb Assmann of Hay Springs, Neb., Dr. Dan and Leah Wernimont, Pocahontas, Ed Assmann, Covington, La., Steve and Lynn Laski, Colorado Springs, Colo., Kyle and Lori McGowan, Crete, Neb., Sue Stevens, Alta, and Dean and Jean Assmann, Roland; 18 grandchildren; two brothers, Bob Assmann and Bernard and Rene Assmann, all of Dunlap; three sisters: Gen and Greg Schwery, Houston, Tex., Helen and Louis Stoltz, Dunlap, and Katie and Mello Langenfeld, Imperial, Neb.; six brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Melvin Schechinger, Manilla, Gladys Dolan, Palm Desert, Calif., Bob and Carol Langenfeld, Eagle Grove, Joe and Anne Langenfeld, Onawa, Marie and Francis Graeve, Earling and Delores and Joe Jacoby, Waterloo; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Machayla Marie Stevens.

Alice Peterson Matson

Funeral services for Alice Peterson Matson, 57, of Sioux City, formerly of Marathon, were Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000 at United Methodist Church in Marathon, with Rev. David Schumann officiating. Burial was in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Smith-Loterbour-Powers Funeral Home in Laurens was in charge of arrangements.

Alice M. Matson was born icon on April 13, 1943, near Marathon, the daughter of Wilbur Peterson, Sr. and Fern (Martin) Peterson. Alice was educated in the Marathon schools, graduating from Marathon High School in 1961. She also attended a lab technicians college in Minneapolis.

Alice was married icon twice and helped raise three stepchildren. She spent most of her adult life in Sioux City, where she ran a day care out of her home. Alice had been in failing health for the past several years.

Alice was a member of United Methodist Church in Marathon. She was also a volunteer for the Salvation Army, making dolls for children. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, dressing and collecting dolls.

Alice died Oct. 5, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital in Sioux City.

Survivors include her sisters: RoseBelle Andersen of Webb and Sharon (Darrell) McConkey of Storm Lake; brother: Wilbur Peterson of Maurice; three stepchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Howard Andersen.

Elaine Stoyke Pyle

Funeral Services for Elaine Stoyke Pyle were Monday, Oct. 9, 2000 at Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Interment was at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Officiating was Rev. Geneva R. Parsons. Music was provided by organist Deanna Larson. Pallbearers were David Hadden, Jim Bjorklund, Kenny Bonde, Bill Morrow, Ron Woolridge, and Dale Martin.

Elaine Phyllis Stangland was born icon Jan 1, 1925 at Alta, to the union of Edgar P. and Mildred (Moll) Stangland. Her childhood days were spent in Alta. The family moved to Storm Lake in 1939.

Elaine graduated from high school in 1943. After high school, she went to work as a telephone operator and homemaker. She was united in marriage to Fred Stoyke in 1963. He passed away in 1977. She married icon Paul Pyle in 1997.

Elaine was baptized in Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, in 1941. She joined St. John's Lutheran Church in Storm Lake in 1963. She recently transferred her membership to the Newell Methodist Church.

Elaine is survived by her husband Paul Pyle of Newell; sister, Maxine Faber of Lakewood, Colorado; nieces, Sue Grummer of Rockville, Maryland and Jan Hart of Carrollton, Texas; and many other relatives and friends.

Earl F. Wright

Funeral services for Earl F. Wright of Schaller were held Monday, Oct. 9, 2000 at the Presbyterian Church in Schaller with Rev. Ken Fells officiating. Music was provided by Karen Grieme, soloist, and Jean Hogue, organist. Honorary attendants were all the grand nieces and nephews. Active attendants were Trevor Wright, Cody Wright, Brad Wright, Brendt Wright, Joe Dungan and Jay Dungan. Burial was in Cook Center Cemetery, Schaller. Farber and Otteman Funeral Home of Schaller was in charge of arrangements.

Earl F. Wright was born icon Oct. 21, 1918 in Sac County, the son of Linus I. and Lillian I. (Hixon) Wright. Earl attended and graduated from the Cook Center Country School, rural Schaller. He farmed for many years and then became a school bus driver for the Schaller school, retiring on Oct. 1, 1983.

Earl was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Schaller and also St. Elmo Masonic Lodge in Early.

On Friday, Oct. 6, 2000 Earl passed away at Buena Vista Manor Care Center in Storm Lake at the age of 81.

Earl is survived by a half-brother, Forrest McCoy and his wife Karen of St. Cloud, Minn.; half-sister Jesse Weinkauf of Waterloo; several nieces and nephews; and several grand nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Linus and Lillian; step-father Charles McCoy; and a brother, Donald.

Floyd Adolphson

Funeral services for Floyd Basil Adolphson, 85, of Storm Lake, will be held Monday, April 16, 2001 at Barker Funeral Home in Alta with Pastor David Arulnathan officiating. Burial will be in Elk Township Cemetery, Alta, with military rites by the V.F.W. Post #6172 of Alta.

Floyd was born icon Sept. 26, 1915 at Alta to Oscar and Matilda (Vanderhoff) Adolphson. He attended and graduated from Alta High School in 1934 as class valedictorian.

On Feb. 19, 1950 Floyd married icon Fern Matzdorff at Aurelia.

Floyd served in the army during World War II as a military policeman. He worked at Hygrade in Storm Lake for 29 years and retired in 1978. He loved fishing and the family traveled out west and in Canada for fishing and camping. Floyd and Fern spent their winters in Texas and enjoyed visiting family and friends.

Floyd passed away April 9, 2001 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake. He is survived by three sons, Richard Adolphson of Storm Lake, Steve and Deb Adolphson of Gilbert and Kenneth Adolphson of Peoria, Ariz.; one sister, Eunice and Marvin Andersen of Aurelia; three grandchildren, Tayler, Nicole and Justin Adolphson of Gilbert; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Fern on Oct. 18, 1999 and his daughter Sandra on Feb. 14, 1953.

Lillian Jones

Funeral services for Lillian Emelia Jones of Linn Grove were held Friday, April 13, 2001 at Warner Chapel in Spencer, with Pastor Steve Smith officiating. Organist was Minnie McKeever and soloists were Greg Drzycimski and Linda Genson.

Casketbearers were Brian Carlson, Brent Carlson, Daniel Carlson, Shane Carlson, Brad Carlson, Neal Carlson, Jill Carlson and Steve Fruechte. Interment was at North Lawn Memorial Park, Spencer. Warner Funeral Home of Spencer was in charge of arrangements.

Lillian Emelia Jones, the daughter of Carl J. and Ida Nilsson Lorence, was born icon Jan. 23, 1914 in Meridan. At the age of one, her family moved to a farm four miles west of Marathon, where Lillian attended school and graduated from Marathon High School in 1931. Later, she attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake for one year.

Lillian married icon Carl O. Jones on July 7, 1933 in Rapid City, S.D. Following their marriage, they moved to a farm near Linn Grove, where they made their home. Lillian was an active member of Riverside Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove, sang in the choir and was a soloist for many occasions. She was also active in the Women's Club, Douglas Happy Neighbors and the TOPS Club in Royal. She enjoyed gardening and cooking.

Mrs. Jones passed away at her home in Linn Grove on Monday, April 9, 2001, at the age of 87. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Myrtle Garton and Melva Foval.

She is survived by one daughter and her husband, Marilyn and Oscar Carlson of Onalaska, Wis.; three grandchildren, Brian and his wife Jeanet Carlson of Linn Grove, Brent and his wife Debra Carlson of Watertown, Wis. and Linda and her husband Steve Fruechte of Caledonia, Minn.; five great grandchildren, Daniel Carlson of Watertown, Wis., Neal, Shane, Brad and Jill Carlson of Linn Grove; one sister, Minetta Bowman of Buena Park, Calif.; other relatives and friends.

Ellen Thomasson

Ellen Hunter Thomasson, formerly of Middlesboro, Ky., daughter of the late Case and Grace Thomasson, died unexpectedly of cardiac arrest on April 5, 2001, in Spencer at the age of 63.

A graduate of King College, Bristol, Tenn., Ellen studied one year at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va., and a year abroad in Montpelier, France. She taught French and English in several states before moving to Sparks, Nev., where she earned her master's degree in English literature from the University of Nevada. Ellen taught literature at Northwest Missouri State University. She also lived and worked in Florida and California before moving to Iowa.

Ellen was a loving, caring, outspoken and endearing individual who made friends easily and was well liked and loved by all who knew her. She is survived by a brother, Alex Thomasson of Lexington, Ky.; a sister, Sally T. Sanger of Albany, Calif.; and by two nieces and three nephews. She will be buried beside her parents in Englewood Cemetery, Southgate, Ky., in a private memorial service. Sliefert Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.

Donations in memory of Ellen may be made to the Storm Lake Public Library, 609 Cayuga, Storm Lake, Ia. 50588 or the Middlesborough-Bell County Public Library, 126 South 20th Street, Middlesboro, Ky. 40965.

Jeffrey Stieneke

Jeffrey Francis Stieneke, 44, of Holstein, passed away Thursday morning, June 21, 2001, in Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City following a lengthy illness with cancer.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 25, 2001 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein. Pastor Bob Stout officiated and burial was in the Holstein Cemetery. Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee was in charge of arrangements.

Jeff was born icon on Aug. 28, 1956 in Cherokee to George and Beverly (Bunney) Stieneke. He graduated from Cherokee Washington High School in 1974, then attended vocational school in Sheldon. He was married icon to Susan Todd on May 9, 1981 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. He started in the Ford business as a wash rack technician with Bowers Ford while still in high school and worked his way to mechanic in the service area. He started Stieneke Ford in Holstein in 1986 and was very active in the business until cancer struck in 1995.

Jeff was a member of the Quimby Baptist Church. His hobbies included working on cars, watching races, especially Nascar, spending time with his family and friends. His greatest gift of all was the gift to visit with friends, relatives and customers, many of whom have become his friends. He always enjoyed meeting new people.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Beverly Stieneke, his maternal and paternal grandparents and an infant brother.

He is survived by his wife, Sue; three children, Tanya, Mike and Kyle, all at home; his father, George Stieneke of Cherokee; two brothers, John "Joel" Combes and his wife Jackie of Omaha, Neb. and Greg Stieneke and his wife Elaine of Cherokee; three sisters, Carol Walker of Omaha, Neb., Vicki Marks and her husband Tom of Norfolk, Neb. and Elizabeth Stieneke and her husband Todd Weiland of Council Bluffs; his in-laws, Darrel and Elvera Todd of Holstein; two brothers-in-law, Roger Todd and his special friend Shirley Thompson of Cherokee and Steve Todd and his wife Greta of Holstein; three sisters-in-law, Sharon Todd of Cherokee, Pauline Schoer and husband Carl of Holstein and Sheila Bender of Holstein; along with several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles and many friends.

Mildred Hollinger

Funeral services for Mildred Hollinger were held June 25, 2001 at the Methodist Church in Marathon. Rev. David Schumann officiated.

Organist was Nita McLaughlin and vocalist was Gene McLaughlin. Pallbearers were Greg Olson, Brad Olson, Rick Leth, Dan Davis, Tim Olson, Rob Leth, Ross Leth, Mark Davis and Todd Davis. Interment was at Poland Township Cemetery, Marathon. Sliefert Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mildred was born icon to the union of George and Forilla (Easton) Goodwin on July 11, 1906. She was raised in Sloan, attending Sloan Public Schools and later graduating from Whiting High School with the class of 1924. She was baptized as an infant in Sloan.

Mildred was united in marriage to George Beck on June 16, 1924. George passed away in 1934. On Sept. 9, 1946 Mildred married icon Chris Hollinger. Chris passed away in 1994.

Mildred was a long-time member of the Methodist Church in Sloan, where she served as church treasurer, church secretary and a Sunday School teacher. She worked as a bookkeeper, but most of all she was a homemaker.

Mildred passed away on June 22, 2001 in Spirit Lake at the age of 94 years, 11 months and 11 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; daughter Christine; three sisters; and five brothers.

She is survived by her daughters, Shirley Davis of Roseville, Minn., Barbara Leth of Lake Park and Lois Olson of Marathon; nine grandsons; one granddaughter; eight great grandchildren; along with other family and friends.

Dr. Victor Christenson

Graveside services for Dr. Victor J. Christenson of Bowling Green, Ky., former teacher, coach and school administrator in this area, will be held at Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, July 2, 2001. Dr. Christenson passed away June 1, 2001.

Jay R. Beekmann

Jay R. Beekmann, age 80, well-known coach and teacher, died Thursday, December 6, 2001 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake following an apparent heart attack.

Memorial services were held Sunday, December 9, 2001 at 2:30 p.m. at Lakeside Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Duane Queen officiating. Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake was in charge of the arrangements. There was no visitation, the body was cremated.

The Jay R. Beekmann Scholarship Fund has been established at Buena Vista University c/o of the Office of Institutional Advancement.

Jay R. Beekmann was born icon September 2, 1921 in Pisgah, the son of Frederick William and Margaret Ann (Dunkle) Beekmann. He graduated from Pisgah High School in 1938, received a bachelor's degree from Buena Vista College in 1942 and a master's degree from Drake University in 1956.

Jay enlisted in the United States Army on May 16, 1943 at Camp Dodge and was discharged from Brooke Army Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, on December 21, 1945.

He was united in marriage to C. Jean Haarup on June 3, 1944 at Alexandria, Virginia. The couple moved to Storm Lake in 1946.

Jay taught and coached at Hayes Consolidated Schools from 1946-1954, at Lake City in 1955 and then came to Buena Vista College in 1955 where he was a professor of education, director of athletics and head baseball coach until retiring in 1986.

He was an active member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and a deacon, he was a member of Hy-Noon Kiwanis, Jewel Masonic Lodge #309, Pride and the American Association of College Baseball Coaches. He also was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife Jean, Storm Lake; a daughter, Trudy and her husband, Gary Lane, Castle Rock, Col.; two sons, Barry and his wife, Kris, Sioux City and Lonnie and his wife, Jane, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; eight grandchildren: Matthew and his wife, Lara Lane, Michael and Mitchell Lane, Brock and Blake Beekmann, and Joshua, Jennifer and Zackary Beekmann, also two great-granddaughters, Allison and Courtney Lane.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Frederick and four sisters, Marie McDonald, Cecelia Elder, Alma Holladay and Ella Stokes.

Emma Kreft

Funeral services for Emma Kreft, 103, of Storm Lake, were held Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001 at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake with Pastor Douglas Haynes officiating. Burial was in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. Sliefert Redig Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Emma died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001 at Methodist Manor, where she had been a resident since Jan. 30, 1996.

Emma was born icon Aug. 20, 1898, the daughter of Hans O. and Louise (Schug) Mohr, northwest of Auburn in Sac County. She was baptized and confirmed in Coon Valley Lutheran Church in rural Sac County. On Dec. 20, 1919 Emma married icon Martin Kreft. The couple farmed in the Lytton area until his death in 1945. Emma moved to Storm Lake in 1948 and was employed as a waitress at Ella's Cafe and in her later years she baby-sat with small children. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and enjoyed working with her flowers and gardening, crocheting, reading and walking.

Preceding Emma in death were her parents; her husband; son Lester; daughter Marlys Lalone; son-in-law Wayne Thompson; four bothers, Otto, George, Albert and Frank Mohr; and two sisters, Anna Lussman and Sophia Mohr.

Survivors include her daughter, Connie Thomson of Ida Grove, son-in-law Devon Lalone of Storm Lake; five grandchildren, Gary and Mishelle Lalone, Diane (DeeDee) and husband Cary Uttech, Terry and wife Carol Thomson, JoDee and husband Jeff Hewitt and Tammi and husband Jamie Hewitt; 14 grandchildren; one sister, Lucille and husband Leo Morenz of Storm Lake; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Margaret M. Eckerman

Margaret M. Eckerman, age 94, of Storm Lake, died Tuesday, December 4, 2001 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake following a lengthy illness.

Funeral Mass was held Friday, December 7, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early with Reverend Patrick O'Kane officiating. Burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Homes of Storm Lake was in charge of arrangements.

There was a Catholic Daughters of America Rosary at 7 p.m. and a Parish Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Margaret Mary Eckerman was born icon June 4, 1907 in Toluca, Ill., the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Schwiderski) Otis. She graduated from high school in Wesley and attended Mankato Business College.

On June 4, 1934 she was married icon to Joseph R. Nickey at Wesley. Joseph died in 1938. Margaret then married icon Edward J. Eckerman on April 21, 1941 at Wesley. He died in 1947.

In addition to being a homemaker and mother to her children, Margaret worked

for many years as a medical secretary to Dr. Gauger in Early.

She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Early, where she participated in the Guild and Rosary Society. She was a Past Grand Regent of the Catholic Daughters of America, a member of the Federated Woman's Club of Early and she loved crocheting, knitting, craft-making and quilting. Margaret also enjoyed cooking and baking for her family.

Her family includes three daughters: Joan N. Zubradt and her husband Larry, Early, Arlene M. Hayler, Asheboro, NC and Mary K. Veraldi and her husband, Bob, Goodyear, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Cecelia Hauptman, Tucson, Ariz., Sister Gertrude Ann Otis, Notre Dame, Ind., and Sister Mary Otis, St. Paul, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; two brothers, Raymond and Edmund and by a grandson, E.J. Veraldi.
