Metta Laursen

Metta Kirstine Laursen, the daughter of Niels Peder Frederick and Karen Andersen Andersen, was born icon Dec. 10, 1901 on her parents' farm in Oakfield Township, Audubon County, and died Dec. 5, 2001 at Salem Lutheran Nursing Home in Elk Horn at the age of 99 years, 11 months and 25 days.

Metta was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church west of Exira. Metta worked as a hired girl for several families. In November 1919 she attended "Winter School" at Grand View College in Des Moines until March 1920. She then was employed by a family in Des Moines for a short time.

On June 5, 1922 she was united in marriage to John Philip Laursen at St. John's Church. They started farming on John's home farm in Pymosa Township, Cass County. They lived on and operated the farm, which was recognized as a Century Farm in 1987. They retired from farming in 1961. Metta continued gardening. Metta and John enjoyed traveling and made two trips to Denmark in the 1960s.

John died Jan. 10, 1988. Metta continued to live on the farm until she moved to the Audubon Friendship Village in November 1991, where she lived until she moved to Salem Lutheran Nursing Home on May 15, 2001.

Metta was a member of Brayton Lutheran Church and Women of the ELCA. She was a charter member of the N.H. Club in Pymosa Township and a charter member of the Keenagers at Brayton Lutheran Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 73 years and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. In 1994 Metta received a distinguished alumni award from Grand View College. She was a supporter of the Danish Immigrant Museum in Elk Horn. Metta was an avid reader and letter writer.

Preceding her in death in addition to her husband were her parents; her brother, Hans C. Andersen; her sister, Lydia M. Holland; and an infant sister.

Survivors include her children, Marvin P. and his wife Ardyth Laursen of Muscatine; Verner E. and his wife Barbara Laursen of Appleton, Wis.; Vera K. Johnson of Eagle Grove; Esther M. and her husband Lowell Haahr of Newell; Paul D. and his wife Carol Laursen of Crawfordsville; 14 grandchildren: Karen Laursen of Avon, Colo.; Philip and Robin Laursen of Muscatine; John F. and Sue Laursen of Rockford, Ill.; Susan Heuer of McHenry, Ill.; Carol Novak of Grayslake, Ill.; Kenneth Laursen of Appleton, Wis.; Carl D. and Cheryl Johnson of Eagle Grove; Kristin and Doug Waugh of Earlham; Rosanne and Roger Brown of Des Moines; Julianne Haahr of Minneapolis, Minn.; Sonia and Kirk Brown of Newell; Sandra Laursen of Boulder, Colo.; Alan and Dana Laursen of Winnipeg, Canada; Annette and Peter Brickley of Hampden, Me.; 15 great-grandchildren: Dustin and Elizabeth; Angelica, Kaitlyn, Casey, Lauren and Brianna; Michelle, Diane, Linda, Allison, Andrew; Graham; Jonah and Kieran; her sisters-in-law, Florence Sand of San Diego, Calif.; Edna Laursen of Mesa, Ariz.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; special friends Carol and Duane Kropf of Kimballton.

Funeral services were conducted by Pastor Steven Frock on Monday, Dec. 10, 2001 at Brayton Lutheran Church in Brayton. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery west of Brayton. Casketbearers were Alan P. Laursen, John F. Laursen, Kenneth R. Laursen, Philip M. Laursen, Carl D. Johnson, Kirk B. Brown, Roger K. Brown, Douglas D. Waugh, Rodney Kropf and Jeff Nelson. Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon was in charge of arrangements.

Maria de Jesus Zaragoza

Maria de Jesus Zaragoza, age 79, of Storm Lake, died Friday, December 7, 2001 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 10, 2001 at 12:30 p.m. at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake with Mr. Kent Radford and Mr. Scott Richey of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints officiating.

Friends called on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home where a prayer service was held at 7 p.m. The prayer service was conducted by the Reverends Juan and Maria Garcia from the Assembly of God Church. A memorial fund has been established.

Maria de Jesus Zaragoza was born icon June 17, 1922 in Guadalajara, Mexico, the daughter of Pedro and Maria Zaragoza. Her formal schooling was in Mexico.

She was a homemaker and mother.

She is survived by seven daughters, Julia Guzman and Ramona Guzman of California, Socorro Guzman and Mercedes Guzman, Guadalajara, Mexico, Maria F. Montano and her husband, Alejandro, Chicago, Isabel Nunez and her

husband, José, Ensenada, Mexico and Adelina Sanchez and her husband, Arturo, Storm Lake, a sister, Crecenia Zaragoza, Guadalajara, Mexico.

Also surviving are 34 grandchildren including, Isabel, Miguel Angel and Julia Janet Nunez, Maria Pilar and Adelina Martinez, Yesenia Mendez, Gilbert, Juan, and Jesus Palomarez, Isabel M. Sanchez, all of Storm Lake, Alejandro, Ana and Esteban Montano, Chicago, Ill., and 43 great-grandchildren.

Her parents, eleven sons, one daughter and nine brothers and sisters preceded her in death.

Wilfred Launderville

Wilfred "Dude" Launderville, age 76, of Lakeside, died Sunday, December 9, 2001 at Newell Good Samaritan Center following a lengthy illness.

Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, December 12, 2001, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake with the Reverend Robert Schimmer and Reverend Dale Launderville officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends called on Tuesday afternoon at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home, where the family was present to greet friends. There was a Legion of Mary Service and a Parish Scripture Service at 7 p.m. A memorial fund has been established.

Wilfred was born icon October 3, 1925 in Vail, the son of Vincent and Marie (Rowan) Launderville. He graduated with the class of 1944 from St. Ann High School in Vail.

He served in Europe during World War II in the United States Army Infantry. He worked as a mechanic for Alta Implement Company for many years and in his spare time enjoyed rebuilding classic antique tractors.

Dude was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, he was a past governor of the Storm Lake Moose Lodge and for the last eight years enjoyed being a "snowbird" in Apache Junction, Ariz.

His family includes a sister, Joan Reed, Storm Lake; two brothers, Lee and his wife, Maxine, Carroll, and Louis and his wife, Peggy, Rogers, Minn., and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Lyle, three sisters, Mary Helen, Jean and Anita, sisters-in-law, Mary Launderville and Jean Woehler and brothers-in-law, Ray Buckingham and Jim Reed.

Evangeline Wawers

Evangeline Wawers, 84, of Fonda, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda with the Rev. Harry McAlpine officiating. Burial was at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Fonda, with military rites by Ray Murphy American Legion Post 114 of Fonda. Mahaney Funeral Home in Fonda was in charge of arrangements.

Evangeline is survived by her husband Edwin of Fonda; daughters Patricia Dueth and husband Jack of Montevideo, Minn., Joan Kurtz and husband Bruce of Storm Lake and Catherine Greenfield and husband Larry of Fonda; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Fritz of Worthington, Minn.; sisters Mary Ann Osen and husband Arlis of Mitchel, S.D. and Peggy Saxton of Garvin, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Veronica Kuemper Fritz; three brothers; one sister; and two granddaughters.

Lucy Oberreuter

Funeral services for Lucy A. Oberreuter, age 86, were held Monday, Jan. 21, 2002 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury. Rev. Bill Schreiber and Rev. Jim Tigges officiated.

Music was provided by Bonita Kane, organist, and St. Mary's Choir. Pallbearers were Mike Brenner, Gary Brouillette, Jim Boyle, Jerry McBride, Dennis Boyle and Don Flammang.

Interment was at Danbury Catholic Cemetery in Danbury. Armstrong Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Lucy Ann Oberreuter was born icon March 8, 1915 on the family farm near Mapleton, the daughter of Isadore and Margaret (Frank) Brenner. She grew up and was educated in the area and graduated from St. Patrick's Academy in Danbury. She furthered her education by attending Normal Training for teachers in Cedar Falls. She then taught classes in country school.

On June 15, 1937 Lucy was united in marriage to Al Oberreuter in Danbury. They moved onto their farm northwest of Danbury where they lived, farmed and raised their four daughters. Al died Dec. 29, 1993.

Lucy was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Rosary Society in Danbury and the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women.

Those survivors left to cherish Lucy's memory include four daughters and their husbands, Jean and Charles Neuroth of LeMars, Linda and Gerald Stauber of Newell, Carol and Jerry Ravnsborg of Bennington, Neb. and Ann and Ron Thiel of Blair, Neb.; six grandchildren: Tracy Stauber Carlson, Tony Stauber, Amy Ravnsborg Magstadt, B.J. Ravnsborg, Adam Thiel and Sally Thiel Heasty; four great-grandchildren; one sister and her husband, Ruth and Earl Martin of Green Bay, Wisc.; along with numerous other relatives, neighbors and good friends.

Along with her husband, Lucy was preceded in death by her parents; one great-granddaughter; five brothers: Raymond, Vincent, John, Norman and Lornie Brenner; and one sister, Bernice Boyle.

Kay Snyder

Funeral services for Kay Selleck Snyder, age 61, were held Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002 at Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel in Vancouver, Wash.

Kay was born icon Nov. 13, 1940 in Storm Lake. She moved to Vancouver, Wash., after spending 38 years in the Hillsboro, Ore., area. She worked alongside her husband, Tom, in their business, T-E Construction, in Vancouver. She was a member of Worldwide Church of God and enjoyed her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Tom of Vancouver, Wash.; one daughter, Dana Logan of Vancouver; two sons, Brian Snyder of Cornellius, Ore. and Daniel Snyder of Bend, Ore.; two sisters, Jan Collison of Fort Dodge and Mary Eddie of Storm Lake; two brothers, Dave Selleck of Portland, Ore. and Jim Selleck of Storm Lake; and two grandchildren.

Betty Mittelstadt

Funeral services for Betty Mittelstadt, 79, of Storm Lake, will be held at 1:30 p.m. today (Saturday, June 1, 2002) at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, with Pastor Douglas Haynes officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Sliefert Redig Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Betty died Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Betty Marie Turner was born icon December 11, 1922, the only child of Roy and Mayrene (Parsons) Turner at Walters, Okla. Betty graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1940, then attended beauty college in Sioux City. She worked as a beautician at the Turner Brothers Barber Shop in Storm Lake. She was united in marriage to Franklin Mittelstadt on February 21, 1942, in San Antonio, Tex. To this union two sons were born, Kimroi and Kyran.

Betty enjoyed golfing, bird watching, fishing and camping, cooking, knitting and crocheting, and especially spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake and active with the Altar Guild at St. John.

Preceding Betty in death were her parents.

Survivors include her husband Franky Mittelstadt of Storm Lake; two sons and their wives, Kim and Lu Mittelstadt of Storm Lake and Kyran and Nancy Mittelstadt of Spirit Lake; four grandchildren: Shani and her husband Mark Podl of Chicago, Ill., Shawn and his wife Melony Mittelstadt of Eau Claire, Wis., Elizabeth and her husband Brandon Valdez of Kansas City, Kan. and Laura Mittelstadt and her fiancé Austin Lago of Kansas City, Kan.; four great-grandchildren: Brooke Mittelstadt, Breyden Mittelstadt, Zachary Podl and Alec Podl; and nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Frank J. Movall

Frank J. Movall, age 85, of Storm Lake, a life-long Buena Vista County farmer, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City following a severe heart attack.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 1, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Lakeside Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Duane Queen officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors by Newell American Legion Post #193.

Visitation was at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Lakeside Presbyterian Church, the Storm Lake Area Hospice or Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Foundation.

Frank John Movall was born icon December 3, 1916, in Alta, the son of Per Edvard and Justina (Johnson) Movall. He graduated from Hayes Consolidated School with the class of 1934.

On September 5, 1944, he was united in marriage to Lois Elizabeth Iverson in Storm Lake. To this union two sons, Edward and Keith, were born.

Frank was inducted into the United States Army in February 1942 was commissioned as an Aviation Cadet and served for 13 months during World War II before being called home due to the death of his father. He had been an active member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, where he was an Elder and usher and served on the Food for Life and Pastor's Calling committees. He was baptized into the Christian faith at Alta on January 22, 1917, and confirmed by Reverend P.S. Nestander at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta on April 13, 1930.

He became a member of First Congregational Church in Newell in 1950 and belonged there until transferring to Lakeside Presbyterian Church in 1983.

Frank's greatest interests were his church and his family, he was always proud of his grandchildren and their achievements. He loved being with friends, farming, reading, playing cards and sports of all kinds.

He was active in many civic and agricultural circles in Buena Vista County, serving as a leader and council member of boys 4-H, as a director of the

Newell Co-op Elevator and the Buena Vista County REC, as a member of the Buena Vista County Health Board and the A.S.C.S. County Committee.

Frank also belonged to the Storm Lake Golden K Kiwanis Club and Newell American Legion Post #193.

His family includes his wife Lois of Storm Lake; two sons: Edward and his wife, Chris of Milwaukee, Wis., and Keith and his wife, Nancy of Newell; five grandchildren: Jonathan Movall and his wife, Jennifer, Emily Movall, Amanda Perez and her husband, Clifford, Michael Movall and Matthew Movall and a great-granddaughter, Anna Elizabeth Schapekahm. Also surviving are two brothers: Clarence and his wife, Wanette of Alta and Verner and his wife, Arlene of Schaller; three sisters: Mildred Peterson of Aurelia, Ruby Danielson and her husband, Evert of Storm Lake and Gladys Heinecke and her husband, Don of Blaine, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Mildred Carlson of Newell and a brother-in-law, Everett Iverson of Storm Lake.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Raymond, a sister Dorothy Anderson and two brothers-in-law, Herb Anderson and Alvin Peterson.

John N. Wilson

Funeral services for John N. Wilson, 69, of Grand Rapids, Mich., formerly of Aurelia, will be held today (Saturday, June 1. 2002)) at 10:30 a.m. at First Congregational Church in Aurelia, with Lay Pastor Bruce Rapp officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Aurelia. Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia is in charge of arrangements.

John died Tuesday, May 28, 2002 in Grand Rapids after a heroic battle against cancer.

John Nelson Wilson was born icon on October 13, 1932, the son of Clifford and Clara (Williams) Wilson in Daviess County, Indiana, and moved with his parents to Aurelia soon after. He grew up in Aurelia, graduated from Aurelia High School in 1950 and had a continuing pride and interest in his school and hometown since. On May 16, 1959, John married icon Norma Jean Palmer.

John graduated from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines and Olivet Nazarene University in Kankakee, Ill. He served his country in the US Army, including a tour of duty in Korea from 1953 to 1955. His vocation in life was that of a computer systems analyst and instructor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Clara Wilson, who were longtime residents of Aurelia.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jean, of Grand Rapids; one daughter, Karen Sue and her husband Calvin Dean and children Brandon Michael and Megan Sue of Des Moines; one son, Robert John Wilson of Tamarac, Fla.; two brothers, Leibert and his wife Juanita Wilson of Fort Worth, Tex., and Ronald and his wife Judith Wilson of Olathe, Kans.; two sisters, Norma and her husband George Wood of Kankakee, Ill., and Donna Cook of Las Vegas, Nev. He is also survived by three aunts, Annabel Williams of Washington, Ind., Mrs. Thomas Williams of Daviess County, Ind., and Catherine Wilson of Aurelia, and nieces and nephews as well as a host of friends.

Bernice Harding

Funeral services for Bernice Harding, 92, of Storm Lake, were held Thursday, May 30, 2002 at United Methodist Church in Alta with Pastor David Arulnathan officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Alta. Barker Funeral Home of Alta was in charge of arrangements.

Bernice Harding was born icon on January 21, 1910 to Marenus and Annie (Hansen) Peterson in Alta. She received her education at Fairview School.

On August 31, 1940, Bernice was united in marriage to Hubert Frederickson. Hubert passed away on February 20, 1978. On November 9, 1979, she was united in marriage to Charlie Harding. Charlie passed away on May 1, 1993.

Bernice was a member of Elk Baptist Church until it closed on Sunday, November 13, 1972. She was a member of United Methodist Church in Alta at the time of her death.

Bernice passed away on May 24, 2002 in Storm Lake at the age of 92 years, four months and three days.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Hubert Frederickson and Charlie Harding; two brothers, Wesley Peterson and Rev. Virgil Peterson; one infant sister, Celeste Peterson; one sister-in-law, Pauline Peterson; and one step son, Donavon Frederickson.

Bernice is survived by two sisters, Helen Johnson of Alta and Virginia and Tom Aldrich of Sacramento, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Velma Peterson of Storm Lake; one step-son, Dewayne Frederickson of Louisville, Neb.; one step-daughter, Phyllis Frederickson of Alta; and many nephews, nieces and friends.

Carolyn Janovick

Funeral services for Carolyn Ruth Janovick, 55, of Madrid, will be held today (Saturday, June 1, 2002) at St. Paul's United Church of Christ. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Madrid. Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn was born icon in Storm Lake and was a homemaker all of her life. She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ and the Chimes Choir, was active in Lay Life Word, the Morning Circle, and at Greater Love Food Pantry. She always enjoyed helping where needed. She enjoyed family gatherings and animals. Making crafts, reading, fishing and being outdoors were her favorite activities.

She is survived by her husband, John P. Janovick of Madrid; two sisters, Helen and Dennis Holliday of Storm Lake and Ardelle R. and Don Staver of Aurelia; two brothers, Leon R. and Carol Otto of Centennial, Col. and Paul B. Otto and Kathryn Tillo of Green Bay, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Stanley and Wendell Otto.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
