Jeannette A. Waldstein
Graveside services for Jeannette A. Waldstein of Sioux Rapids will be held June 21, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Little Sioux Valley Cemetery in Rembrandt with Pastor Ray Miller officiating. Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.
Jeannette was born
on July 27, 1919 in Lake City, the daughter of Samuel and Frances (Hinkley) Johnston. She graduated from Lake City High School and took nurses training in Carroll. On October 22, 1948 she married
Howard Waldstein in Windom, Minn.
She was a homemaker and farm wife and belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary, Senior Regent Women of the Moose and various community organizations.
Jeannette died Friday, May 24, 2002, at St. Luke's Lutheran Home in Spencer at the age of 82. She is survived by a daughter, Pat and Wayne Mills of Mulvane, Kan.; four sons: Sam Waldstein of Indiahoma, Okla., Brian and Ann Waldstein of Sioux Rapids, Kyle Waldstein of Rembrandt and Rick and Ila Waldstein of Blue Ridge, Tex.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Josephine Millenacker of Carroll; and many relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, John O'Herron and Howard Waldstein; infant son, Eric Waldstein; and brothers Marlo and Richard.

Marvin Winters
Funeral services for Marvin D. Winters were held Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at United Methodist Church in Lake Park with Rev. Chris Ebbers officiating. Organist was Jeanine Gunderson.
Pallbearers were Pat Gillespie, Brian Goodell, Tim Heikens, Bill Heikens, Scott Mitchell and Dave Perkins. Interment was at Silver Lake Cemetery in Lake Park. Turner Funeral Home of Lake Park was in charge of arrangements.
Marvin Dale Winters was born
June 4, 1933 at Harris, the son of Harold and Frances (Miller) Winters. He was raised and educated in the area, attending Excelsior Consolidated School. Marvin served in the US Army from 1955 until he received an honorable discharge in 1957. During his time in the service, he was a member of the Honor Guard in Washington, D.C. and a member of the 124th Signal Company in Vicinsa, Italy.
On December 29, 1957, Marvin was united in marriage to Anna Mae Godfrey at Lake Park. The couple made their home in rural Lake Park, where they farmed.
Marvin was a member of United Methodist Church in Lake Park. He was a lifelong farmer who took great pride in his vehicles and Allis-Chalmers machinery.
Marvin passed away Thursday, May 23, 2002 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Spirit Lake at 68 years of age.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Mae, of Lake Park; son, Michael Winters, and his children Vanessa, Kelsey and Evan of Paducah, Ky.; daughter, Shelley Hohneke, her husband Tim, and their children Angela and Brad of Storm Lake; son, Steve Winters, his wife Kathy, and their children, Kevin, Adam and Grace of Lake Park; and daughter, Susan Klenken, her husband Bruce, and their children Allison and Jennifer of Spencer; brother, Richard Winters, and his wife Rose of Lakefield, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Elizabeth Lester
Funeral services for Elizabeth "Beth" Lester, 23, of Rembrandt, were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with Father John F. Cain officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. Sliefert Redig Funeral Home in Storm Lake was in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established.
Beth died Thursday, July 18, 2002 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
Elizabeth Frances Lester was born
on Good Friday, April 13, 1979, at Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake, the daughter of Darrell and Dixie (Pitts) Lester. She was baptized at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sioux Rapids. She was raised in Rembrandt and graduated from Sioux Central High School in 1997. Beth graduated from Iowa State University in August 2001. She was employed with Early Head Start in Spencer and lived at home with her mom and dad.
Beth loved life and loved to talk. She never knew a stranger. She enjoyed showing cattle and was a member of the Iowa Limousin Association. She especially loved playing with her nieces and all little children, and being with family and friends.
Preceding Beth in death were her brother, Joshua Lester on September 29, 1983; her grandmother, Frances Sue Dowdy; and a special great aunt, Doris Gilbert.
Survivors include her finance, Ryan Buckendahl of Alta; her parents, Darrell and Dixie Lester of Rembrandt; two sisters, Karla and her husband Brian Ahrendsen of Westside and Stacy Lester of Rembrandt; two nieces, Megan and Emma Ahrendsen of Westside. Also surviving are her grandparents, Bill and Dorothy Pitts of Bella Vista, Ark. and Eugene and Susie Dowdy of Paducah, Ky.; great-grandmother Emma Lou Hardin of Ledbetter, Ky.; several aunts and uncles; numerous cousins; and a world of friends.
Noah Dose
Noah Benjamin Dose, infant son of Vicar Benjamin and Rebecca (Eichenseer) Dose, was stillborn on Friday, July 19, 2002 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Green Bay, Wis.
Survivors include his parents of Shawano, Wis.; maternal grandparents Tom and Ruth Eichenseer of Ankeny; paternal grandparents Dave and Donna Dose of Storm Lake; maternal great-grandmother Christine Baldus of Jewell; paternal great-grandparents Bob and Esther Lamb of Storm Lake and Elsie Dose of Anthon; maternal aunt Angie Eichenseer and maternal uncle Tony Eichenseer, both of Ankeny; two paternal uncles, Josh Dose of Des Moines and Matthew Dose of Storm Lake; and one paternal aunt, Amanda Dose of Storm Lake.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 22, 2002, at St. James Lutheran Church of Shawano. Interment was at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Schroeder-Mickelson Funeral Service of Shawano is assisting the family.
Kathleen Miller
Funeral services for Kathleen "Kate" Miller, 92, of Aurelia, were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2002, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta, with Pastor Lilette Johnson officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Aurelia. Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia was in charge of arrangements.
Kate died Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at Sunset Knoll Retirement Home in Aurelia.
Vera Kathleen Dunn was born
June 16, 1910, the daughter of Frank and Sadie (Jamieson) Dunn at Marcus. She graduated from Marcus High School. On April 15, 1931, Kate married
John P. Miller in Marcus. Kate and John farmed. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid, and played cards with several card clubs.
Preceding Kate in death were her parents; husband John on December 29, 1981; two sons, Gaylen Miller and Robert Miller; and one sister, Phyllis Wilberding.
Survivors include one son, Loren and his wife Carolyn Miller of Tipton; two daughters-in-law, Donna Miller of Ida Grove and Gayle Brownmiller of Aurelia; 12 grandchildren: Cal and his wife Julie Miller, Carrie and her husband Doug Gulseth, Matt and his wife Staci Miller, Amy and her husband Bob Mikos, John Miller, Elizabeth and her husband Joseph DeMonico, Patrick and his wife Mary Miller, Joel and his wife Judy Miller, Megan and her husband Ken Bahl, David and his wife Cathy Miller, Kristen and her husband Chris Fleck, and Aaron Miller; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Nellie Pearson of Storm Lake; and nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Evelyn A. Eide
Evelyn A. Eide, 84, Cherokee, died April 9, 2003 in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital, Cherokee, following an extended illness.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee. Pastor James Steen will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Cherokee.
She was born
August 26, 1918 in Sioux Fall, S.D. to Ernest and Anna (Aalboe) Christensen. She was educated in Irene and Gayville, S.D., graduating in 1936. On February 25, 1939 she married
Art Eide in Yankton, S.D.
Evelyn and Art moved to Cherokee, from Yankton, S.D., in 1956. Evelyn worked for Hawley-Allison and later Hope's Fashion Farm for many years. She will be remembered for being meticulous in appearance and could paint a room and still look "neat as a pin." She enjoyed her family and traveling. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Richard Eide, and his wife, Ruby, of Primghar; one daughter, Dianna Langholdt and her husband Terry of Cherokee; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Freng of Yankton, S.D.; one brother, Vernon Christensen and his wife Jean of Vermillion, S.D.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Charles F. Pendleton
Charles Francis Pendleton, 81, a native of Sioux Rapids, died May 10, 2003, of a heart attack at his home in La Jolla, Cal. A memorial service was held at La Jolla Presbyterian Church, with internment in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma, Cal.
Charles Pendleton was born
April 6, 1922, in Sioux Rapids. He enrolled at Buena Vista
College in the fall of 1939. In 1942, following the attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Cadet. He was assigned to a dive bomber squadron of USMB-141 and sent to the South Pacific war zone.
Following the war, he came to California, where his wartime bride Janet was living. In 1946, he was accepted to the University of Southern California School of Law, where he completed his B.A. and went on to receive his J.D. degree in 1948.
After 20 years of civil trial practice in Los Angles and Helmet, Mr. Pendleton was appointed to the California bench. He spent 12 years in municipal court and nine years in the superior court.
Judge Pendleton is survived by two daughters, Cyndie Pendleton of Pacific Beach, Cal., and Lisa Pendleton-Harrison of Temecula; a son, John Pendleton of Helmet, Cal.; his wife, Isabel; a stepson, Richard Miller of North Corolina; a stepdaughter, Shelly Foster of Pacific Beach, Cal.; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, Wendell Pendlton of Florida; and a sister, Donna Smith of Arizona.
Larry D. Lickiss
Larry D. Lickiss, age 61, of Storm Lake, passed away Monday, May 26, 2003 at his home in Storm Lake.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 29, 2003 at 1:30 p.m. at United Methodist Church in Storm Lake with the Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Aurelia.
Larry was born
on October 9, 1941 in Quimby, the son of Murl and Winona Fern (Jackson) Lickiss. He was baptized in the United Methodist Church.
As a child, Larry lived first in Quimby and then moved to Cherokee with his family, where he graduated from Cherokee High School. Following graduation, he received his associate degree in electronics from Iowa State University in Ames in 1963. Larry was employed by Iowa Office Supply in Storm Lake for over 25 years.
Larry served his country with honor as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force at George Air Force Base in California from 1966 through 1970, when he was honorably discharged.
On November 30, 1963, Larry married
Charlene Carole Waddell in Aurelia, a union which lasted nearly 40 years. Their marriage was blessed with two sons and one daughter.
Larry was a member of United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. He always considered the welfare of his neighbors and to that end, donated over 40 gallons of blood in the past 30 years.
Larry loved fishing and model railroading. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed traveling. However, spending time with his family was Larry's most precious pastime.
Survivors include his wife, Charlene; one daughter, Laura Anne and spouse Jon Lane of Lander, Wyo.; two sons, Stephen James Lickiss and fiance Julia Husak of Des Moines, and Anthony Paul Lickiss of Kansas City, Mo.; one brother, Neil Lickiss and wife, Anna Marie of Cherokee; two step-brothers, Chuck Driggs of LeMars and Doug Driggs and wife Diana of Cherokee; two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Waddell and Anna Waddell, both of Aurelia; family friend Lee Dobbs of Kansas City; and several nieces and nephews.
Larry was preceded in death by his father and mother, Murl and Winona Lickiss; his step-father, Clyde Driggs; one step-sister, Helen Driggs; and one brother-in-law, Robert Waddell.
Madeline Richeal
Madeline Richeal, age 96, of Storm Lake, passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake. A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 2, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at Sliefert-Asmus Funeral Home in Storm Lake with Reverend Beverly Bell officiating. Interment will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Madeline Shake Richeal was born
the daughter of Frank and Susie (Goldenshue) Shake on October 24, 1906 in Bloomfield, Ind. Her family moved to Clarion and she graduated from Clarion High School. In 1931, Madeline was united in marriage to Earl Richeal and this union was blessed with one son, James.
Madeline worked as a cashier for IPS and Selective Service and was a secretary for Storm Lake Community Chest. Faith was very important to Madeline and she was a dedicated member of Storm Lake United Methodist Church, where she was active in circle. Madeline participated in her community as well, having been a board member and past president of Wa Tan Ye, a member of the Saratoga Club, and a member of the Methodist Manor Guild. She also did mending for the Buena Vista County Hospital Auxiliary.
She enjoyed gardening, particularly roses, but most of all, she cherished spending time with her family and neighbors. She was also very patriotic.
Preceding Madeline in death were her parents, Frank and Susie Shake; her husband, Earl in 1958; her son, James in 1984; two sisters; two brothers and great-grandson, Nicolas.
She is survived by her granddaughters: Cathi Stone and her husband, Mike of Novato, Cal., and Kelly Stone of Fort Bragg, Cal.; her daughter-in-law, Mary Richeal of San Raefel, Cal.; four great-grandchildren: Jonathon, Christopher, Matt and Hailey Stone; and several nieces, nephews and cousins in Indiana.
Conrad Schafer
Conrad Louis Schafer, 82, a resident of Mount Vernon, Wash., died of cancer in his home on Thursday, May 22, 2003. He was born
on July 8, 1920 in Sac County, where he lived until joining the Air Force in 1942.
Conrad was confirmed in 1946. He was a long-time member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Storm Lake and Trinity Lutheran in Mount Vernon. He married
Gladys Dierenfeld in Wall Lake. After the war, they settled in Storm Lake, where they raised four children with much love. Connie worked at Hygrade for 33 years and semi-retired in 1981. Because he loved being on the golf course, he became a groundskeeper at the Alta Country Club, where he was a life-long member.
Schafer moved to Mount Vernon in 1993 where he enjoyed helping neighbors with lawn mowing, painting, furniture making and other handyman jobs.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys; four children: Beverly and her husband John Butterfield of Spokane, Wash., Brice and his wife Carolyn of Mount Vernon, Wash., Kenny of Denver and Kendra and her husband, Mike Rande. Schafer is also survived by five grandchildren: Jen and her husband Barry Danzig, Becky and her husband Michael Karl, Kelly and her husband Brian Leighton, Dan Range and Nikki Range. There are four great-grandchildren: Christy Swanson, Ilysah Karl, Stacy and Christopher Leighton.
Conrad was preceded in death by his parents, Conrad and Anna Schafer; three brothers: Hermon, Vernon and Leonard; five sisters: Catherine Nelson, Viola Stock, Irene Schafer, Annaville Myers and Edna Mae Wedlock; and his grandson Brandon Schaefer.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church. Rememberances are suggested to Hospics, Trinity Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
Cremation arrangements were made under the care of Kern Funeral Home.
Dorothy Smith
Dorothy E. Smith, age 86, of Alta died on May 13, 2003 at Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake.
Graveside memorial services were held on May 20, 2003, at Laurens Cemetery. Smith-Loterbour-Powers Funeral Home of Laurens was in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy Elizabeth Crouch was born
on Jan. 21, 1917 at State Line, Ill. She was the daughter of Clarence and Verdie (Shaffer) Crouch. Dorothy was educated at Danville, Ill. In 1935, she married
Wilbur Church in Storm Lake. The couple moved to Orange County, Calif., in 1942, and lived there for 38 years. Dorothy worked at different drug stores in Santa Ana and Anaheim, Calif. After Wilbur died, Dorothy moved to Alta in 1980. In 1988, she married
Warren Smith. Warren died in 1991.
Dorothy was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Alta, and had been the president of the Alta Senior Citizens. She enjoyed cooking and taking care of her house plants.
Dorothy will be remembered and missed by her many friends and family.
Vivian Koth
Graveside committal services for Vivian Koth of Des Moines will be Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery, Storm Lake with Pastor Schulz officiating. There will be no visitation.
Survivors include a sister, Lois and husband, Darwin McConkey of Alta; and a brother, Quintus and wife Kay of Hayward, Calif; also nieces and nephews, Cindy and husband Robert Iehl of Alta; and Don Koth; Mark and wife, Deanna Koth; Amy and husband, Barry Carroll; Steve and wife, Lisa Koth; and Nancy Koth all of Calif.
Louis Kelley
Louis Kelley, 90, of Cherokee passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at his home in Cherokee following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services were held on Friday, May 30, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee. Rev. Ray Hampton officiated. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee was in charge of arrangements.
Louis was born
on February 26, 1913 in Woodbury County to Charles and Margaret (Dunn) Kelley. He grew up on a farm near Hinton. He was married
to Nina Kissinger on March 30, 1937 at Elk Point, S.D. He farmed in the Washta, Quimby and Aurelia areas, retiring in 1979 when he moved to Cherokee. He had participated in cornhusking bees at the state level. Following his retirement he worked for Staver High Country Salvage for several years. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He loved to play cards and was a member of a 500 club. He liked watching rodeos, both live and on television. He enjoyed baseball, bird watching, going to the congregate meals and especially visiting with people.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Nina on January 5, 1992; two sons-in-law, Howard Fassler and Ronald Edler; six brothers: Harold, Russell, Leo, Edward, Robert and Bernard Kelley; three sisters: Lucille Haight, Helen Parkhill and Mayme Grakas.
He is survived by two daughters and one son: Jolene Deichmann and her husband Irvin of Marcus; Linda Edler of Storm Lake; Larry Kelley and his wife Margaret of Oklahoma City, Okla.; three grandsons: Mark Fassler and his wife Kathy of Cherokee, Brent Edler of Storm Lake, Landon Kelley and special friend Tara of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one sister, Leone Parsons of Sioux City; also many nieces and nephews.
